Well alright then! Same time tomorrow, lads? (patching to PB 3)

V4 Betas (MacOS 19A512f & iPadOS 17A5534f) working better: Sidecar, Context Menu, iCloud. But, Music app is a dumpster fire & OTA updates not working.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 11:41 PM PDT

I went ahead and did what everyone recommends: installing Catalina / iPadOS betas on my production machines. Here's 2 things I think are semi-important that I've learned.

    1. Don't update MacOS (or iPadOS) unless both versions have been released. If you do, Sidecar won't work. (i.e. MacOS Catalina Beta 4 + iPadOS Beta 3 = Bad)
    2. OTA software updates don't seem to work (for me). While I was able to install iPadOS Beta 3 version 2 by OTA, all other Beta versions, including 4, I've had to download profiles from developer.apple.com. I mention this because every other place tells me OTA should be working.

    Other thoughts:

    • Party tomorrow for the death of jiggly mode.
    • The Apple Music app (screenshot) on MacOS is likely the worst and most underdeveloped App on the Mac at this point. In Beta 3, it was OK, I could search for music but I couldn't view "All Songs" or "Top Songs" by an artist. I'd get an error. Now, I can't do anything but play music that's already in my library. Since Apple is killing off iTunes, I hope they invest some significant time and effort into the Music app.
    • iCloud seems fixed for the most part. In the 1st 3 Betas, my files wouldn't sync between all my Mac computers. I would have to manually go to iCloud.com on my Catalina laptop to do so. Beta 4 has opened the floodgate again and everything is syncing as it should.
    • iPadOS gestures are much better (the App 'swipe over' and split-view mode). Before I'd always trigger jiggly mode. I wanted to scream.

Sidecar not working in the latest betas for me: macOS Catalina (19A512f) and iPadOS (17A5522g) -- at least my iCloud File Storage is syncing again.

    USB device issues in Catalina

    Posted: 18 Jul 2019 02:19 AM PDT

I have a Caldigit USB hub with a Microsoft Lifecam Cinema and a Lacie HDD attached, both of which stopped working with the beta. Has anyone else had the same or similar issues, or any suggestions for a work-around please?

    External Display Issues on MacBook

    Posted: 18 Jul 2019 01:07 AM PDT

I've had the same issue as someone beforehand but I don't have a iPad to use to fix the display. I set the monitor to 75hz when in clamshell mode and that then lead to the monitor going black nothing changed. The display works when the laptop is open just not when I put it in clamshell mode.

MacBook Pro 2013 with 750M i7 if it matters.

that's what the other person had - tbh not sure if I post this here or else where

Turned on my Mac today to find my Dock preferences and contents completely reset to factory defaults, Hot Corners disabled, and that several third-party apps reenabled themselves to start up at login. What happened? (Running latest Mojave version).

    iCloud vs iCloud Drive

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 02:02 PM PDT

Hope somone has the knowledge and time to reply.

I have just watched several professional-level YouTube videos on iCloud and one on iCloud settings in Sys Prefs, but remain unclear on what different settings do.

To take a very simple one:

Click on Sys Prefs / iCloud and you are presented with a window titled iCloud, a window populated by a number of Apps. At the top of the window is iCloud Drive/Options and Photos/Options.

Click on iCloud Drive/Options and once again you are presented with a window with many of the exact same Apps as appear in the iCloud window.

Keeping this to a very simple question:

What if one clicks the box for Pages.app in the first window and not in the iCloud Drive Window?

What if one clicks the box for Pages.app in the iCloud Drive Window, but not in the iCloud window?

Finally what if one clicks the boxes for Pages.app in both the iCloud window and the iCloud Drive window?

Thanks for your patience and for any clarifications.

Beta 4 Killed my MacBook Pro

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 06:28 PM PDT

Been running Catalina since Dev Beta 1, no issues besides regular beta quirks. Installed Beta 4 this AM and about 5 mins in my 2018 15" MacBook Pro (maxed out) just died. I tried everything I could, Apple Store spent two-hours, they have to ship it to Cupertino 😢

$50 Dollars for a Notepad ++ equivalent on Apple?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 06:14 PM PDT

I will be looking through some articles for the obvious however, which one of you has the real scoop that I may not catch right away? I get the drift I should only be installing applications in the App Store and there does not appear to be that large of a selection when it comes to utilities that were free on Windows and/or previously paid for. I sort of have been spoiled with my premium Chocolatey membership and library of utilities to tinker with.

Does a decent script editor or compiler really cost 50 dollars for it to be high quality and safe? Currently I am playing with BBEdit however which is very similar to Notepad++ but it is only a 30 day trial then fifty dollars. What do you guys recommend if I only really care about being able to read html, java, c++, powershell, python, Autoit, Autohotkey, perl, sql variants, xml, vbscript, plus ability to open basic text file types such as .ini/config and whatnot? (compiler if time permits) Till this point I have used Notepad++ as an all around editor and Scientilla/Sublime compiler wise. I have tinkered with VSCode but never really took the time to learn how to make it any more useful than what I already had on hand so because I see office equivalents on here I am willing to bet that would be a usable item on here. Kind of would like to avoid using Microsoft products on this PC of mine if possible though.

Any advise or recommendations would be helpful. I have only been using MacOS for like 4 nights now and am running into all the simple growing pains that happens with using something different. When I get home from work sometimes it is nice to just have something that works but then I get curios.

Someone on this thread helped out on a simple copy paste complaint I had before reading the noobs manual and having a little time to get used to all the settings. Note: I sort of want to avoid installing untrusted apps until I am More familiar with handling sketch software.. Thanks for your help in advance.

I will also go look through the forum for similar stuff.

If this has been asked like a thousand times I will remove it myself. Part of this might have been venting because I already paid 10 dollars for software that was not even able to share my screen to my Roku device which is a native feature in Windows for the last several years. I really do appreciate your guys time and am surprising still enjoying this OS spite the growing pains.

    MacOS quirks

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 10:15 AM PDT

I've been using my MacBook Air 2018 (Retina) for about 5 months now and have noticed some fundamental bugs in MacOS that I figured I would share. I listen to music a lot and randomly iTunes will stop playing audio, songs start playing but no audio is present unless you quit and reopen it. Another issue I have is the App Store will intermittently decide to force quit itself within seconds after opening it, sometimes it doesn't but other times, the error pops up, saying it quit unexpectedly and do I want to reopen it. The final gripe I have is "automatic brightness" and how it's tied to the SMC unlike iOS where you can simply toggle it on off to give control back to the system. All of these issues persist after internet recoveries as well, hoping Mojave 10.14.6 can squash at least the two bugs I have encountered. Auto Brightness is just annoying more than an issue.

    Accent colors Catalina Apple apps

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 12:12 PM PDT

hi, are the default Apple apps in Catalina respecting the accent colors?

I mean, I picked orange as accent color in Mojave, but for instance GarageBand still uses the standard blue in it's progress indicators. Same for iTunes for instance.

I would expect at least the Apple apps to properly use the accent colors.

    What is com.apple.coresymbolicationd folder?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 03:23 PM PDT

    What is com.apple.coresymbolicationd folder?

    Hey guys,

Does anyone happen to know what this com.apple.coresymbolicationd is?

I've noticed that it recently is taking a lot of space and it does that every time I clear it.

I mean nonetheless it's size continues to grow even if I don't do nothing to it.

It's not that big as I cleaned the folder with CleanMyMac X but before this one it was almost 3GB!

[Logitech MX Master 2S] Software + Scrolling + Mapping

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 06:35 AM PDT

Finally decided to get the Logitech MX Master 2S to use together with the Magic Trackpad - just a few questions:

    (1) Is the Logitech Software really necessary? Are there alternative options that are less "heavy"/bloated?

    (2) Does the Logitech Software offer support for smooth scrolling, device-specific scrolling direction (reverse vs natural) without affecting my Magic Trackpad?

    (3) Can I use BetterTouchTool and/or Karabiner-Elements to configure the mouse (to avoid installing the Logitech Software + also set-up my external keyboard)?

[Question] Snow Leopard era Scrollbars on High Sierra — Java applications show them

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 02:46 PM PDT

Some old Java applications show the blue aqua scrollbars on the latest versions of MacOS. I'd like to know how this is possible. I've personally themed my MacOS installation to look as much as Snow Leopard/Mavericks as possible, but the scrollbars are missing.

Do Java applications store their own assets? Does Apple store legacy assets somewhere? All assets I've come across (.car files now) do not contain any legacy assets.

If Java applications contain their own system assets, how do I extract them?

The image linked above is my Macbook Pro running High Sierra which I themed to look like Snow Leopard.

[Question] DMG Files - Are they safe?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 01:13 PM PDT

    Hi there,

Sorry for the noob question, but I'm a. bit new to macOS and I'd really appreciate some help.

The better part was growing around the web a bit earlier today and managed to download a shady 500kb .dmg file. She tried cancelling the "opening" process (not actually installing it) but it was too quick and loaded up the "move this file to your applications screen" window.

The file was never moved or clicked again. Closed the window and deleted the .dmg. The application it had inside was simply called "Installer" and it was never actually opened/installed. She was not prompted by a security prompt at any point, nor was she asked to type in her password. I was actually able to run the .dmg though VirusTotal and it came up with quite a bit of red flags 14/25 detected it as malware (then permanently deleted the file).

My understanding is that .dmg's are only containers and that mounting them can't do any harm. The only possible way for anything to go wrong is if the app is actually installed and executed. I've done some Google searching on the subject and I've found contradicting responses - majority of which were quite old.

I've ran a Sophos scan and it's all clear there.

My question is - under the conditions above could there be anything fishy going on? If yes, does this only affect the user account under which the events occurred or is the entire system possibly compromised?

ps: I understand I'm being extremely paranoid at this point, but I'm thinking better safe than sorry?

    Old model iMac OS update

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 05:55 AM PDT

    Hi guys!

First of all, I am completely new to the Apple world. Two weeks ago, out of curiosity and cheap price, I got myself an iMac 27 inch late 2009 model with 8gb Ram and i7 processor for 150 euro. As it's currently running El Captain 10.11, is there any possibility to update the running OS to a newer one? Cheers!

MacOS Mojave doesn't find Apple Keyboard at start up

    Posted: 17 Jul 2019 11:13 AM PDT

Since i installed bootcamp/win10, Mojave does not find Apple Keyboard (new white version) when starting up into MacOS.

At the login screen, the bluetooth window is seeking for it for about 2 minutes before i can type & login.

My Apple mouse works immediately duo.

Even weirder is once my keyboard is found, it sometimes shows the black keyboard, and sometimes the white keyboard.

    Any ideas?
