[Discussion] Description and short clip of changes to 3D Touch

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 07:09 AM PDT

(CAUTION: This post is (too) long)

I have noticed changes to 3D Touch on the home screen, which you might have noticed as well, which provide a possible explanation as to why 3D Touch feels weird to me (and maybe to you) on the current iOS 13 beta.

In iOS 12, the light padding surrounding the app icon increases in size at a rate depending on the amount of pressure currently applied to the screen, as a visual indicator of amount of pressure, until the required pressure is applied to open the Quick Actions menu. You can see similar behavior still being used within third-party apps you have installed on iOS 13, for example if you 3D Touch a post in Reddit with a small amount of pressure, but not enough pressure to open the post, you can see the post has only slightly expanded and background is blurred, though the post has not opened. However, on the current iOS 13 beta, the app icon actually decreases in size before expanding again, and the padding has gone, so there is no visual indicator of pressure.

On iOS 13 there is also a delay between the haptic feedback vibration after a 3D Touch and the Quick Actions menu opening, which makes it feel sluggish. (If you move your finger after the vibration you can actually activate wiggle mode) The only way to make the menu open faster is to lift your finger as soon as you can after the vibration, but to me this feels like being subjected to a reaction test every time I want to open a menu. I feel it would be better to activate the haptic feedback vibration when the menu opens.

If you turn off 3D Touch and only use haptic touch, it works more consistently and naturally, but for me this only emphasized the looooonnng press activation method. Furthermore, because the only visual indicator of the long touch is the app icon shrinking instead of expanding, if your finger covers the app icon there is no way of knowing that the phone is starting to recognize a long press until the haptic feedback is felt. Therefore, if for your finger moved slightly and the press is no longer being recognized, you will be waiting for eternity for a vibration that will never be felt.

In summary some of these changes would have probably been made for the "unified experience" of 3D Touch and Haptic touch. These changes are probably intentional, and Apple developers would have most likely experimented with many options to see what works best for haptic touch, before coming to what we have on the beta. However, it does feel that 3D Touch has been somewhat abandoned, at least on the home screen and within Apple apps, and trying to use haptic touch in conjunction with 3D Touch feels quite messy. On the other hand, suggesting feedback, such as having the icon expand instead of contract and changing the delays along with the haptic feedback timing, won't hurt I guess.

It may just be a matter of getting used to it, but to be honest I am starting to think it might feel strange for a while (such as going from a high to low resolution when watching video).

Do the changes feel OK to you, or what reasonable modifications do you feel could be made?

Video comparison On the left is iOS 12, on the right is iOS 13 developer beta 4

    tl;dr

Visual pressure indicator has been removed, there is a longer delay between the press and the menu opening, having to lift my finger off for a shorter delay is annoying, using haptic touch instead takes much longer, most changes are likely to stay, I am now sad :(

[Discussion] iOS 13 Music App Redesign Unintuitive Design Decisions

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 10:36 AM PDT

While the mild redesign to the music app in iOS 13 seems good looking, I feel that it is much worse in usability as compared to iOS 12. If you all agree, I'd love for all to submit these suggestions to Apple (I will) through the Feedback app. The only reason I post here is so that we could get our voices heard.

So, here go my points -

    • Why do I have to tap on the "Up Next" button just to be able to shuffle/repeat my songs? Shouldn't this be the primary functionality right at the front of any half decent music app?
    • Why do I have to press buttons to toggle between "Up Next" and "Lyrics" view? In iOS 12, it was so much easier to see the lyrics and still be able to see the next song without tapping any buttons.
    • Why is it so hard to add songs to library now? The + button to add the currently playing song to library has been removed from the current interface (in the playing screen) and this seems to be a counter intuitive, if not downright stupid, decision
    • Also, what's with the iPad Music app? Why is the playing window in a weird place without being aligned towards anything? It's not how Apple designs things for sure. It's asymmetrical, non uniform and aesthetically unpleasant
    • Once you 3D Touch a playlist/song, it used to have a play button on the artwork and an arrow with which you could see the album. Why has this been removed from the current music player?

It seems to be a clusterfuck of stupid minimalist design that offers no functional benefits. In fact, it goes a step backwards in functionality for a marginal gain in look (tbh, it doesn't look that much better). What do you guys think?

    [BUG] Apple stock Books App

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 09:47 AM PDT

Sorry if this has been addressed, I've just not found it. Anyone having issues with audiobook playback ?

In the current and previous ios 13 public betas I have been unable to play an audiobook longer for than a few seconds. Additionally, the "play" icon never engages, several times even after force closing the app the audio continues to play until the "few seconds" are up.

[BUG] I kinda wish this was how the reddit app was laid out in landscape. (I know, I know, the vanilla reddit app) Although as soon as you scroll it snaps back to 1 column. Only appears when coming back to the app via app switcher.

[Bug] Music app share/function sheet a mess. Has this been annoying anyone else? I hope this is a bug. You can’t even remove entries and they’re all irrelevant apps and shortcuts and this happens in all apps I think not just Music.

Just wondering if you use it all the time, scheduled, never or every now and then. Personally, I set Dark mode to turn on from 10pm to 8am.

[Feature] “Hey Siri” works for external mics with CarPlay now

    Posted: 22 Jul 2019 07:54 PM PDT

Back then, external mics wouldn't work for my aftermarket CarPlay device... I had to yellow at my iPhone for it to work.

Now I'm surprised to have noticed that the external mic near my steering wheel works with "Hey Siri"!!!

iOS 13 has been improving my 'quality of life' lately. Excellent to use when changing music, getting directions, and activating HomeKit stuff.
