Let's be realistic. Apple laptops are great - I've used them for years - but right now their performance per dollar value is... questionable. I play games (less important) and run lots of VMs (more important) on my laptop, so I need it to be semi-competent in that department. And unless I want to drop three grand on the top-of-the-line 15 inch MBP (which isn't in the budget at the moment), I can't get the power I need. So what keeps me considering a mac laptop? The trackpad. The trackpad. Nowhere is there anything like it. It's just absurd. I have looked and looked and no other laptop has a nice big ol' trackpad with the perfect friction coefficient. Seriously, does anyone know if anyone else has it?

I dislike standard laptop trackpads so much that I have seriously considered buying a cheap Macbook air and setting up an a VM hosting server I can just VNC into.

Anyways, I'm here looking for your suggestions. Does any non-apple laptop trackpad compare? Should I buy a secondhand MacBook for its trackpad? Or should I just suffer a normal one. The new X1 Carbon ThinkPad's are really nice - except for their trackpad.

Service Battery on 2015 Macbook Pro 13 inch (Base Model) Would it be a good idea to get my battery replaced? I usually have it charged and plugged into a monitor, but the battery does not last more than 2 hours when using it on its own without a power source.

    New Purchase - MBP 15 2018 vs. 2019

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 03:47 PM PDT

I am very close to pulling the trigger on a new MBP 15. I can get a 2018 for $2049 vs. a 2019 at $2199. I could save $150 on the 2018, but if there are serious improvements with the CPU throttling I think a $150 saving is negligible. Any thought or feedback would be appreciated from those with real world experience with these models!

    Thanks!!

Will it be possible to swap out the keyboard of a new 2018 MacBook Air after the new Air is being sold?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 12:53 PM PDT

I think there are some poor yahoos like me that need to purchase a laptop just BEFORE the new 2019 MacBook Airs are released by Apple. The reasons for not waiting until after the release to purchase an Air are varied, but, for myself, I'll be going overseas for school at the end of September. It appears that Apple won't release the new 2019 Air (with the scissors keyboard) until October. So the question I haven't yet seen on this sub so far is: If I purchase a 2018 Air now, will I be able to return to an Apple store at the end of this year and swap out the butterfly keyboard for a scissors keyboard? Even if I haven't yet experienced any problems with the butterfly keyboard? Thank you.

    First time migrating a mac

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 12:54 PM PDT

What's the best way to migrate from one macbook to another? It's the first time I've done it and I'm afraid the migration assistant will take many hours.

Digital Output sound for MacBookPro macOS Mojave

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 10:03 AM PDT

An hour ago I went to use my MacBook to watch a video online and I had no sound. I tinkered around with my sound settings in system preferences and the option to adjust Digital Out - internal speakers - does not select/black icon, instead it remains gray/deselected. I plugged in my headphones to check for sound and those work so I know it's the internal speakers not activating. I tried contacting apple support, providing them my phone number to get an email response that they tried contacting me, I provided the +1 country code Incase just area code didn't work and still they can't reach me for some reason. Has anyone with a Mac experienced this or know how to fix the problem?

Should I keep the 2018 air?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 09:49 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

Laat week I picked up the 2018 macbook air on sale at bestbuy in Canada. I am within my return window and don't know if I should return it for the pro 2017 non touch bar.

I'm a photographer and I plan to lean into more video work. I was able to edit high quality photos just fine on the air however then fan does come on when I'm editing pictures or 4k videos. That is my main concern. It handles the tasks pretty well, the fan is just on when I'm doing heavy tasks. If the fan wasn't on, I'd assume it was chugging away just fine.

I plan to hook up an external display to use it on my desk so the display difference doesn't really bother me. The difference would be about $129 in Canada with the sale.

My concern is, the keyboard on the macbook pros are faulty and will most likely break on me. I really enjoy the touch ID on the air and the pro does not have it. And the pro has less battery life and the macbook air is newer.

So should I do the exchange? On the fence. Thanks guys.

    Should I sell my 2018 15”?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:44 AM PDT

So one user a few days ago kinda opened my eyes ,he said: " these news MacBooks are a ticking bomb, might explode tomorrow or in 5 years". There were some issues with the keyboard and the logic bord and Apple is doing what any company should do a is replacing these things but from what i understand the design is flawed and no matter how many times you "fix it" you can't really fix it. I had my previous MacBook 13 inches retina for 4 years no problems at all, had everything I wanted yet i wanted something shinier and I sold it got the 15" a few months ago. I love it and I haven't had any troubles with it besides the fact that it has become incredibly time Consuming to try and find a decent usb c monitor. Now I have a costum pc build on the way and I honestly won't be using the MacBook that much. Should I sell it now and hope next years machines don't come With the same problems? Or is the problem blown out of proportion and the issues aren't that big ? I really do love macOS and Mac ecosystem but the laptop was a hefty investment and I can't really deal with the thought on the back of my mind that any day the keyboard my crap out on me

Which OS to upgrade to (MacBook Pro Late 2011)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 07:02 AM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro (Late 2011) that I upgraded RAM on to 16 and updated to El Capitan in 2015. It still works, but I want security updates. Reading some stuff out there, I'm a bit confused over which system might be best to try and would like to hear from anyone, but especially someone who has made this move.

Originally, my laptop did overheat in 2015 with the changes, but a Macsfan app fixed that, and even when that stopped working a year later, I never had any further overheating. But I'm concerned with that in any kind of upgrade. I'm quite a novice at this and needed YouTube tutorials to get me through the RAM upgrade. So, I need the easiest path for someone who is very modestly savvy on these things. Thanks!

Should I pay the premium for a MacBook?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 04:10 AM PDT

I need a new computer. A few years back my one and only laptop/pc got to old to use and I got a chrome book because it was so cheap, but I can't even start to count the amount of times it wouldn't do some normal everyday computer thing I needed to do. I have never owned a Mac before but I'm an iPhone guy and I loved my iPad so I was looking at the new MacBook Air. Looks great, super slim, what looks like a smooth operating system, would work great with my phone and I don't play games. Buuuuutttt the price. I'm not living check to check but $1,200ish is still a good chunk as I'm not rich so it makes me wonder if the Mac would be enough nicer and worth it in the long run or if after a few uses I'll feel like "eh" and could of saved like half the amount by just getting a HP or something in the pc world. I'm sure this subreddit is a bit biased but who isn't lol, I'm open for any advice you got.... thanks!
