| Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:33 PM PDT I recently bought this external DVD-RW drive (that link goes to Dell's website) for use with my 2016 MacBook. But I need a cable to connect it. I was going to buy an off-brand USB-C to USB 2.0 (or USB A) adapter. But then I'm reading about complaints about these cables melting in certain cases because some manufacturers don't know how to properly handle USB-C? Basically, I'm wondering if I have to buy the Apple version of the adapter, or if I can avoid it entirely for a cheaper version, and if so, which cheaper version might be safest? I don't really understand completely what I need to look out for in terms of voltage limitations and whatnot. [link] [comments]  |
| Closing MBP lid immediately stops WiFi printing Posted: 05 Jul 2019 10:06 PM PDT I'm pretty new to Mac OS - but if I print something to my canon WiFi printer and shut my lid, it will cancel the print almost instantly leaving me with half printed pages. I have tried adjusting sleep settings to no avail. Can anyone help me understand how to resolve this? Leaving the laptop open isn't an option unfortunately since my lovely kitty seems to have a 6th sense for an unattended keyboard. [link] [comments]  |

| MBP Crashing to black screen before promptly shutting down. Posted: 05 Jul 2019 05:20 PM PDT Doesn't matter what I'm doing. I can just have only a web browser open and it will crash. No kernel panic screen, it just shuts down. I can be using it for 2 hours before a crash, or 10 minutes. I've done every conceivable thing including ram reset, SMC, the on computer diagnostics (returned fine) and the Apple store test (also fine). Even with all this done it was still crashing so I erased the entire disk and reinstalled MacOS. Right as I start downloading Chrome through safari it crashes again. I want to say it happens more frequently when it is warmer but it's hard to tell. I'm have a Mid 2014 15-inch MBP on MacOS Mojave 10.14.5. Any help would be greatly appreciated right now as I have no idea how to move forward [link] [comments]  |
| Posted: 05 Jul 2019 08:56 PM PDT This has happened to my old iPhone 7 on YouTube and current iPad Air 2 with Minecraft. A few weeks ago whenever I opened YouTube on my phone a white screen with a black box in the middle showed up before it loaded. When I deleted and reinstalled it, it went away. I got a new phone for separate reasons, but for about a week the same screen showed up on my iPad whenever I opened Minecraft. But today while I was playing, I could here someone coughing and eating chips in my headphones and it stopped when I closed the app. I then deleted and reinstalled the app and the beginning screen went away when I now reopen it. Was I hacked? If so how do I keep it from happening again? [link] [comments]  |

| Different iCloud and iTunes account - can’t use iTunes credit on both Posted: 05 Jul 2019 04:42 PM PDT I have an iTunes account (Gmail) that I've had forever Then I got an iCloud account (me) when then was released. I use them both as you can setup individual iCloud and iTunes accounts. iTunes credit is loaded onto iTunes account - this pays for any subscriptions (Netflix) and other iTunes purchases iCloud has my credit card attached and the monthly iCloud subscription gets paid off here. - the credit card is also shared with family and the iTunes account Q - how do I get iCloud account to use the iTunes credit to pay for the subscription? OR - is there are way to load iTunes credit as a payment method on the iCloud account? I spent several hours with Apple support already and got nowhere. I've run out of space and need to upgrade my iCloud account ASAP but want to set it up to pay with (discounted) iTunes credit if it's something I'm paying every month. Help is greatly appreciated. Coming back home my wifi isn't being recognized by chrome cast or google home mini. Google home could reboot, etc. but never get the wifi working for either despite having worked fine for a year prior. Went to reinstall Google home and noticed that nothing from the App Store will download or update. Signed in and out of Google store. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]  |

| Transferring photos from iPhone 7 to Windows PC Posted: 05 Jul 2019 03:34 PM PDT Hi all, I have an iPhone 7 with latest OS updates, and a Dell XPS PC running Windows 10, also with the latest OS updates (including the latest iTunes updates). Very regularly, I need to be able to take photos on my phone, and then access those photos on my PC for basic editing and labeling. When I plug my iPhone into my PC via USB, it SOMETIMES works fine and allows me to access the photos on the iPhone via Windows File Explorer just like any other storage device. But 95% of the time, it gives me an error message tells me to make sure the trusted device is unlocked (it is) and no matter what I do, I can't get the PC to access the iPhone as a storage device. I have tried everything to figure out why this happens sometimes and not others, including everything listed on this Apple support page, and even tried many other suggestions I found via Google search, but I can't seem to figure out what the difference is between the times it works and the times it doesn't. I know the alternative is using iCloud, so that's what I've started doing, however there's a hiccup there too: for my work, I will go out in the field and take, say, 150 photos. I need to have those photos accessible on my PC within an hour or so, and for whatever reason, it seems to take at least half a day to a day for the photos to appear in my iCloud. I know the images may pop up quicker if I reduce the image quality on my iPhone (it's on standard factory settings), but for a small percentage of the ~150 images I take in the field, I end up really using the higher quality (and I never know which photos those might be). My co-worker has an iPhone 8 Plus, and his photos pop up on his iCloud way faster than mine do, and neither of us have any idea why. Is there a way to force my PC to recognize and accept my iPhone 7 as a regular storage device 100% of the time? Or am I doomed to the fate of just buying an actual point-and-shoot digital camera with SD card? I really just didn't want the headache of lugging it around, making sure it stays charged, etc. when I have my phone in my pocket all the time. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me! It should NOT store or backup any photos off the phone. (The encrypted container should be backed up with the native iOS backup methods). It should NOT work with or share photos with the native iOS photos app. It should store the photos in an encrypted container. I would like the app to support Touch/Face ID but that is not required. Have a very old apple wirless keyboard that within the last few month has started going through batteries at a crazy rate. It's to the point I'm switching batteries weekly. I'll gladly give Reddit gold to anyone who makes a suggestion or comment that is slightly helpful. That seems a little tacky, but there it is. Bear with me, this is a little complicated. I've got a Mac Mini, a Wii U, a Nintendo Switch and a DVD player. I want to use them with one display and one audio output device - a "sound bar." I want my family to be able to use this setup with minimal fuss and confusion. I can make it work by switching inputs, or audio and video cables. None of the family can remember how to do this. So, I want it to be as simple as possible. For a display, I have two choices, unless I buy more gear: -- A generic monitor, with no speakers and no audio output jack, several years old. -- A nondescript older flat screen TV, 720 P. -- A sound bar for audio. What I want to do is use an HDMI switch (four inputs, one output) to connect various HDMI inputs to the TV or monitor. I've got a device that splits the audio from the HDMI, so I can use the sound bar with the monitor. (As I said, the monitor doesn't have audio capabilities). If I use the TV, I can connect the TV's audio output jack to the sound bar. In theory, all I have to do is change the input on the HDMI switch. In theory, either of these methods should work. Nice theory. I've run into two problems. 1-If I use the monitor, the Mac Mini won't send sound over the HDMI. Apparently, it senses the device connected to the HDMI doesn't have audio capability. I can work around this by using the audio output jack from the Mac Mini and then use various methods to switch the audio input on the sound bar. Too complicated for family. 2-The Mac Mini is fussy about sending video over HDMI. At one point, I got everything working, so it seemed. But then I discovered that the only way to get the Mac Mini to send video over the HDMI was to turn on one of the other devices connected to the HDMI switch. Presumably, when the HDMI switch detected a video signal from another device, that forced an HDMI handshake between the monitor or TV and the Mac Mini. I've tried a couple of things: If I plug the Mac Mini into the HDMI 1 input on the TV and plug the HDMI switch (connected to the other three HDMI input devices) into the HDMI 2 input on the TV, the Mac Mini works normally, with no video problems. That seems to suggest that the HDMI switch is interfering with proper handshake between the display and the Mac Mini. I tried a different HDMI switch, newer and more expensive, with good reviews on Amazon. Same problems as with the old HDMI switch. I got an EDID emulator. Amazon had several, so I chose this one because it was cheap. That seemed promising. The Mac Mini sent video normally on some of the settings, but none of the settings matched the screen resolution on the TV. (It's an older 720P flat screen TV). This seems to be an EDID handshaking issue. I'm not sure how to proceed. I'm considering the following possibilities: -- Buy a new TV with four HDMI inputs. (Most TVs come with only three HDMI inputs, unless they are really big and expensive. I don't want a big and expensive TV.) -- Buy a newer monitor that has build in speakers and an audio output jack. Maybe it will handshake correctly with the Mac Mini. --Try a third HDMI switch. Maybe an expensive one. Maybe they are not all the same. -- Try installing an EDID utility on the Mac Mini. (There aren't many available. I don't know if they are any good, and I don't know which one to try.) If you have gotten this I appreciate your persistence. | 32bit EFI 64bit Mac Mini - trying to install SangomaOS Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:58 PM PDT I'm on a quest to install SangomaOS/FreePBX on an old Mac Mini. The Mac Mini has 32bit EFI but is a Core 2 Duo as it's been upgraded. I'm currently fearing this quest will be the end of me. I've burned about ten discs and flashed about thirty USB sticks (the same one obvs!) I have successfully installed Ubuntu desktop on this machine and it booted and ran like it was designed to run that OS. No option keys, no visible questions about what OS to load, just a slight delay, then fine. HOWEVER, on first attempt at installing SangomaOS, I got as far as the installer beginning to write to the drive, then it suddenly pipes up: "the package grub2-efi-ia32 is required does not exist" and quits. So then I modified the ISO with help from this page and used the isomacprog to modify the SangomaOS ISO. This time when I tried running the DVD, the whole thing was carried off without a hitch. All seemed well. But then when I go to boot the new system, I just get a flashing question mark. Anybody have any idea how I can remedy this?! I've tried to boot from various different linux live burned DVDs and USB sticks - none have loaded successfully. A couple have lead me to GRUB > but whenever I do 'ls' on a hd, I just get "unknown file system". My latest idea (which I've just had now while typing) is to try to run the Ubuntu DVD which I managed to successfully install and see if that wil run as a live DVD instead of installing itself. But even if it does, I then don't know what the plan is if I get a GUI. | Getting the old version of an app? Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:41 PM PDT I have this app for video editing called 'Splice' which I really liked using, the only problem is that since the update it has not been the same. The layout is completely different and I am unable to edit as easy and well as I used to. I have a backup of my iPhone on my computer from a couple of months ago, would I get the old version of the app back if I would load this backup onto my phone? Are there any other ways to 'downgrade' the app or return to a previous version? [link] [comments]  |
