Can we talk about how bad the Yelp integration is in Apple Maps?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:18 AM PDT

In my opinion, it's a woefully outdated and poorly implemented integration. You can't view photos, more than a few reviews, or read the reviews fully, without downloading the Yelp app, and it feels like it contradicts so much of Apple's standards for their proprietary apps.

Why haven't they implemented their own review system for locations? Why do you think they have kept it around for so long?

Edit: Wow, thank you all for the responses (and critiques of my post title). It seems most people hate the yelp integration - what ideas do you have for a solution? What would you like to see done (other than Yelp removed altogether)?

On a similar note, I hate being forced to download an app. It's something Twitter has not received enough backlash for. Their mobile browser site is unusable.

Not usually fussed with in app purchases but Draw It actually shook me with a monthly sub for £13.49

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 06:36 PM PDT

£13.49 for a month! Or £4.99 a week! For a drawing game! That's more than Netflix. That's quadruple my current student membership for Apple Music. That's £161 a year for coins, removing ads and word packs.

This to me is a really bad example of a monthly subscription and why the whole model is turning people way off. A one time purchase to unlock the unique character and turn off ads would make way more sense to me. Usually I don't care about iAPs but this just felt crazy.

What's your opinion? (Also the game has a lot of ads, some unskippable ones too).

Edit: turns out they have a remove ads option for £3 but that makes the subscription even less appealing if that's even possible

Edit 2: also turns out they're using a free, open source library on GitHub for the machine learning and such (Google's drawing stuff)

A Bridge Through Time: A 2016 MacBook Pro serving files via FTP to a 1998 "Wallstreet" PowerBook, which is serving the files to a 1987 Mac Plus over a serial cable. A little goofy, but now I've got games and software from the Internet on a Mac made in 1987!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 09:09 AM PDT

I love tinkering with old computers. My favorite local cafe is hosting a "retro computing get-together" tomorrow night, and I thought it would be fun to bring my Mac Plus over to share some sweet vintage games and apps, but getting those files from the Internet onto the Plus was a bit of a challenge. I was able to figure out this goofy solution, learned a bunch along the way, and I'm all set for the nerd party tomorrow :-)
