| Need help with recovering data from this. Posted: 26 Jun 2019 07:40 PM PDT So here is an issue I have, I backed up my Catalina beta over the last backup that I had in March. Now I don't see anything other than 2 folders in there (TM tried to backup this morning twice and that's all the folders I have). I had my file vault on (fortunately took a picture of the key) when I decided that I need to remove everything. Installed older version of Mac OSX and then downloaded Mojave and installed it from USB. As I can't access the TM backup I was hoping to just boot into encrypted partition (shows me this how do I get data out of this or try to boot into this. Any ideas how to proceed. | Posted: 26 Jun 2019 10:47 PM PDT I tried upgrading from El Capitan to Mojave tonight, and it got stuck about 40% of the way through, saying "Installation is in progress. Calculating time remaining..." for about an hour. I was reading that others had waited 16-20 hours with no progress, so I decided to force a shutdown. Bad idea. Now when I try to login, I am able to enter my password and the progress bar goes for a little bit, but then eventually I get a message like this: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/331130/mac-book-12-early-2016-kernel-panic-ionvmecontroller-cpp4949 It only flashes on screen momentarily so I haven't seen the whole thing exactly, but I definitely saw "Mac OS Version: not yet set". What are my options? I don't have a back up (stupid I know). I know that part of the upgrade is converting the file system - am I screwed for getting my data back? I was able to boot into recovery (I think) and I see utilities such as "Reinstall MacOS" and "Disk Utility". When I try Disk Utility, it says my main disk (SSD) is not mounted, so I can't even run first aid. If I choose "Reinstall MacOS", will this install Mac OS from scratch, overwriting everything from before? Is that my only option? [link] [comments]  | ||

I had a lot of problem on my mac (shared folders moving after my mac sleep, finder crashes). Then we disabled AFP to keep only SMB sharing. It's now stable and also faster. [link] [comments]  | ||

| Sidecar frustrations with the Dock Posted: 26 Jun 2019 12:49 PM PDT Mac Catalina's new Sidecar is wonderful and I personally think its better than Duet for the most part but I am having one big frustration that I am sure others are feeling. I am making this post in hopes someone has found the answer but I have not yet. My biggest complaint about Sidecar is really more about the Dock and how I can't lock it to my main screen. So I use my Macbook Pro 15" w/Touchbar and an external Dell monitor as the main display which is the screen I want the Dock locked to. The issue is when using my iPad Air as another display, I am putting it below my Dell monitor and the Dock automatically drops down to my iPad screen that is being used in Sidecar. Has anyone found a way to lock the Dock to a specific screen or location? Whether is changing settings or using another piece of software? I know I could move the Dock to the side of my screen or over to my MacBook Pro's screen but I am hoping to find a way to accomplish what I'm wanting. Thanks, everyone! [link] [comments]  | ||
| Turn MacBook on/off with lid closed and outputting to an external monitor Posted: 26 Jun 2019 02:43 PM PDT I use a MacBook Pro in my studio as a desktop machine outputting to an external monitor. The lid is almost always closed, so the power button isn't accessible. I've been unplugging the power cable which puts the computer to sleep, but I've noticed this messes with the system processes such a kernel_task nuking the CPU requiring an SMC reset for excessive thermal throttling. I was wondering if there's a way to fully power the machine down and back up again without the use of the actual power button so I can keep the MacBook in a fixed location without having to open the lid everytime I need to work. I have a 2009 cMP (flashed to 5,1) that I've been gradually upgrading, and my latest goal is to set up an internal fusion drive using a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. At first I assumed this was something I could do in Disk Utility and then simply move all of my stuff to the new drive, but every guide I've found has you go into Recovery Mode and use the terminal. I've never been great with Terminal and anything beyond simple commands - I have a persistent fear of mistyping a letter or adding an extra space and seriously messing something up (lingering concern from my high school Windows XP days where I turned my computer into a clusterfuck). Previously installed applications are all shown in the launchpad. However, Applications that I installed after installing Catalina are not showing up in the Launchpad. They can be found in Applications folder and searchable via Spotlight. I tried to install Firefox and Visual Studio for Mac. Both applications were blocked due to being from "unidentified developer". I had to unblock them from Security setting just like before. But App icons are missing in the launchpad. N.B: I tried to crosspost my post from r/MacOSBeta but it didn't got approved. I transferred them regularly to iMac using Photos app. I want to keep photos under favorite album, also some other photos kept their duplicates in my iPhone. Is it possible? Also, is there anyway to sync my favorite pictures (that I flagged them in iPhones) to favorite folder in Photos App? | Posted: 26 Jun 2019 06:29 AM PDT This is proving to be an oddly annoying issue, but apps I have uninstalled (or wish to re-install using another Apple ID) keep showing up in the 'updates' section of the Mac App Store (i.e. are treated as if they are still installed). I already uninstalled the apps completely using AppCleaner + cleared the Mac App Store Cache + rebooted multiple times. I am unable to access the debug menu (which has apparently been removed since Mojave). Any solutions/ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments]  |
