    Computer Science Student

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 10:41 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I am currently mulling over which MacBook to get for school this fall and I wanted a second opinion.

So I am trying to decide between these two:

    • 13in MBP w/o TB -- 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 w/ 512GB storage | $1,649
    • 13in MBP w/ TB -- 2.4GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i5 w/ 512GB storage | $1,899

and I was just wondering is the 2.4GHz quad-core 8th‑gen worth that extra $250 over the 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-gen one? I'm not going to be doing anything extensive on the computer like Final Cut or rendering anything. It'll just be basically school work, web browsing, watching movies, etc. What do you guys think?

Replacing a battery 2015 macbook pro that is out of warranty?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 07:23 PM PDT

    Hello!

As the title states; I am looking for a straightforward price if anyone knows.

    I have a 2015 Macbook Pro 13'

For a little while, I thought my charger was going out, because it would randomly not charge my macbook. But today I went to an Apple store, and checked the charger they have with their display models.

Not only did the charger work, but when I turned on my macbook, I noticed that the battery was at 0% (it was at 20% before I turned it off), and a "Service battery" notification was set.

The moment I pulled the plug from the macbook; it shut down.

In the spirit of not wanting to be "that guy" I have already attempted a search with r/apple and came up with three posts that comes close to an answer to the question, but not definitive. And, in a not-so-strange quirk of irony; the apple store will not answer....

"How much will replacing a battery in a 2015 Macbook Pro that is out of warranty cost?"

    The reason(s) the representative gave were as follows;

"We may not be able to replace it because it may not be safe to remove the battery."

"The computer here does not say."

"The service guys in the back that do it are all busy, and don't like to answer that question."

    Thanks in advance!

Examples below. I could have sworn there was a post that detailed $500 but could not find it again.

    Example 1 $199

    Example 2 $129

    Example 3 (unkown)

    Help: Macbook for students

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 09:20 PM PDT

I'm going to college this fall, to be convenient for work and study, I decide to buy my first Macbook. I don't know anything about Macbook before, totally a newbie, have just comeback from Apple website. I'm used to windows, macOS is something different but I want to try because of good reviews from others.

I will only use for assignments, surf webs, watch movie. Sometimes, I do some photoshop, but not professionally. I'm going to use it for 4-year college or maybe longer.

Which macbook should I buy? I'm thinking of buying Macbook Pro 2019 13" because it's a newest version, so for a long time, is it worth?

One more question, how about adapters? Is it gonna cost a lot?

    Help shift key acting weird

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 09:03 PM PDT

My girlfriend's MacBook retina non touchbar got a little water on the outside shell. We dried it out as best as we could and as far as we know no water got inside. Now whenever the shift keys are pressed phantom keys also get pressed. The left shift activates the left option key and the right shift activates the left shift key. Can I change something or is this water damage?

2018 MacBook Air logic board - free replacement (apparently not phishing scam)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 08:11 PM PDT

Hopefully my experience over the last 24 hours saves owners of the 2018 MacBook Air the stress I went through:

I received the email at the bottom of this post and initially believed it because it had my serial number and all the links went to Apple domains. I even clicked on a link that went to the Authorised Service Providers in my area.

Then I felt suspicious and tried googling the issue - no official announcement by Apple, and a lot of people asking "is an email from [AppleSupport@insideapple.apple.com](mailto:AppleSupport@insideapple.apple.com) fake?" And a lot of people replying yes.

So I freaked out, ran a virus/ware scan, changed a whole lot of passwords and disconnected from the network overnight.

Then this article popped up: https://www.macrumors.com/2019/06/29/2018-macbook-air-logic-board-issue-free-repairs/ and a call to my local ASP confirmed that this all seemed legit.

    Aargh.

    Dear MacBook Air owner,

Apple has identified an issue with the main logic board in a very small number of MacBook Air 13-inch 2018 systems.

Our records show that you have an affected MacBook Air. Apple will replace your main logic board, free of charge.

To ensure that we can get your MacBook Air repaired as quickly as possible, please contact Apple. An Advisor can answer questions and assist you with making an appointment. Alternatively, you can make your own appointment with an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store.

To prepare your MacBook Air for service, please backup your data.

Note: If your MacBook Air has any damage which impairs the service, that issue will need to be repaired first. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.

    We apologize for any inconvenience.

    MacBook Air serial number: XXX

    Sincerely,

    Apple Inc.

    Missing MacBook Air 1TB option

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 11:00 AM PDT

Anyone have any idea why Apple skipped a 1TB option for the MacBook Air? I would like 1TB but 1.5TB is more than I need and at the price difference going from 512GB to 1.5TB is more than I would like to pay. 1TB is offered in the pros so just seems odd that on the Air you have to choose between 512 GB and 1.5TB with nothing in between.

    Macbook Air Battery Percentage

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 10:50 AM PDT

When I opened up my MacBook Air from Shut down the battery was 53%. But when I got into my actual account the battery percentage changed to 55%. I have Mojave installed and my MacBook is 2014. Is anyone experiencing this and is this a problem?

macbook has 2 hard drives how can I use time machine to copy to both drives?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 07:04 AM PDT

I have a old 2012 macbook pro that has 2 hard drives installed (1 instead of the disc drive)

one of the drives corrupted but I managed to get a time machine backup and reformatted the corrupt drive to work again

I've reformatted both drives and want to use the time machine back up to restore the macbook

My time machine drive has of course as it should created 2 backups - one for each drive

How can I use time machine to copy the content of both drives to the 2 drives in the macbook?

When i choose restore using time machine it is only giving me the option to restore the one drive

    I hope this makes sense

Have a chance to grab it for very good price, but not sure if it is still good enough in 2019 - what do you think? Main usage: mail, office apps, some light development(.NET Core, react, react native)

    What is crashpad_handler?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 05:12 AM PDT

Hi, I just got a brand new MBP 2019 a few weeks ago, and I've had issues with it instantly running hot and the fan always being on, even when I was just using safari or something. I checked in activity monitor and noticed I had something called "crashed_handler" using 99-100 of the CPU, so I forced it to quit, and now my Macbook is nice and quiet like it should but.

But I tried googling around to see what exactly that was, and I couldn't really find an answer. I saw something about Chromium, but I don't have Chromium installed so it wouldn't be that I don't think.

How far back to buy a Macbook?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 05:11 AM PDT

Hello, I'm really interested in getting a laptop for college and didn't want to go all out with the price (max budget $1000) and saw that there are plenty of deals on Marketplace and Craigslist. Most Macs (Air or Pro) seem to be from the 2013-2015 range. Will these be able to get me through four years of college with general use? How should I go about this?
