FYI, if upgrading your iPhone 8 running the latest 12.3.2 to an iPhone Xs running the latest 12.3.1, you're going to have problems

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 07:25 PM PDT

My wife has an iPhone 8 Plus, and I've upgraded her to an iPhone Xs Max. Her old one was running 12.3.2, while the latest available for the Xs is 12.3.1. Because of this, the Xs wouldn't restore from her latest iCloud backup. I had to downgrade her 8 Plus to 12.3.1 and then perform a backup to my Mac using iTunes (iCloud wireless backup wouldn't work because it said the last backup was from a new version of iOS) before I could do a proper full restore to her new Xs Max. Here's a guide I found: http://osxdaily.com/2019/06/12/how-downgrade-ios-13-beta-back-ios-12/

I contacted Apple Support and gave them a hard time because they really shouldn't be putting customers in the position that punishes them for upgrading their phones. Not only that, but they either were unaware of or couldn't walk me through the downgrade process. Seems like their technical support people should have been able to at least guide me through how to get this working, to say nothing of the fact that I should never have been in this position to begin with. I'm annoyed because Apple should be better than this. What happened to the "it just works" motto they used to run with?

When is Apple Making its own PC Silicon?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 09:18 AM PDT

I know Apple has been working on this for a few years for its Macs to have in-house silicon (much like the iphone does already). Considering the fact that the iphone is by far and a way the most powerful phone you can get (since the silicon is solely developed to run on that device with ios; making it very efficient), I have been waiting to switch from pc to mac when they officially are using their own chips. I'm sorry if this has come up recently in discussions. Just wanting to figure out what the timeline is on this rn, 2020, 2021?

Pro users of r/Apple, what do you need on iPad OS to replace it with your PC?

Anyone else here hoping for an updated 12" MacBook soon?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2019 01:54 PM PDT

Besides an updated processor, my only wish includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports, although it's very unlikely, knowing like Apple behaves. Oh, and maybe rename it also to MacBook Air, so we have two different sizes of each line. Working for an authorised reseller it would save so much confusion.

Dear Apple, Let us upgrade our Macbook Pros.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 11:39 PM PDT

If we break our keyboard, we don't have Applecare a few years later and with the 2016 + Macbooks*, if something happens to them.. really anything, nothing is fixable by human hands. I feel like the world's trillion dollar company is forgetting about the average person in the field.

We get upgradeability in the new Mac Pro; modularity. Perhaps Apple's Mac profits would grow more if people knew their investment was repairable. I just can't imagine a non-repairable Toyota. And these computers are a staple of one's life just like transportation.

Currently any Mac user has to resort to external boot drives taped to the back of screens if you want to a realistic "upgrade." The alternative recommendation is to create more e-waste by always getting a new product.

And this drives away third party creativity, and innovative conversations. This drives away repair shops and the groups of people associated with those. This lowers the portability of Macbook's. It's ugly.

Imagine a world with Macbooks with 4 NVMe Drives stuck to the back of the screen. Well hey, at least it would be fruitfully spacious. But the internal 128GB of storage would be just sitting there. Pros no longer have the graphics, nor the upgradeability, nor repairability. We need a respectable change to match what the Mac Pro has always been in the past and present.

*2016-2017 Macbook Pros do have a removable "ssd," however its ultra-proprietary and very rare to find. 1TB usually goes for $750. A 1TB Crucial NVMe drive goes for 169 at the time of this writing.

My Mac History (all ext family included--I work on them) -- And never stopped using them: Macintosh LC, Mac Classic II, Mac LC III, Mac 6500/250, Powerbook G3/233 14.1c, Power Mac B/W 350 w/ matching 17" CRT, Powermac Mirror G4 w/ matching 17" CRT (still working/upgradeable), Powermac G5 (died--motherboard wasn't really serviceable)/ 17" LCD, Macbook Pro 2006 Intel (still working/upgradeable--topcase replaced/bad keyboard/IDE 2 SD boot drive/battery replaced), 2011 Macbook Pro 17" (added SSD, RAM, Battery), 2016 Macbook Pro 13", 2015 iMac 5K.

A personal perspective on the notch

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 04:13 PM PDT

I know that the notch on the ten series has been talked about to ad nauseam levels at this point, but I wanted to kind of share my own personal experience with it after having owned an XS Max for a good two months.

So, before buying into the X line due to mainly financial reasons, I would constantly hear a ton of people state that the notch would be something that would, "disappear", in day-to-day usage. However, for me personally, that hasn't necessarily been the case, but I honestly don't mean that in a negative way, and I'll explain why in a second.

The notch for me so far has always been an ever present entity that makes itself known the instant I turn on my phone. It and its, "horns", are there and flaunt themselves proudly with no shame. When watching media in full screen or browsing the web, I still find myself occasionally glancing up at the notch before refocusing on whatever I was doing. Though, I can definitely say that Apple's implementation of it is one of the most elegant in the smartphone industry, and I don't really mind its presence. Why?

The reason why I personally don't care nor am bothered by the notch on the X iPhones, is because unlike many other phones with their own notches, the one of the iPhones has a truly genuine reason for being there. I recognize and appreciate the sheer amount of tech that's packed inside of that space, and am fully aware that the notch just like the pinhole, are merely stop gaps that these companies have to take right now as a means to bridge the gap towards a future where phones really are these uninterrupted slabs of glass and metal. Plus, the near full screen effect that I now have is worth it.

That being said, I would absolutely love to see Apple either shrink said notch considerably next year as the sensors needed for Face ID possibly become more compact, or find a way of nixing it whilst still keeping Face ID in place. But, for now, I personally don't mind the notch's inclusion. And, apologies for this ultimately being a long post about a freaking display cutout, lol.
