FaceTime: someone else picked up Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:40 AM PDT My wife and daughter were FaceTiming me from upstairs. I saw my phone ring but before I picked up, someone else (totally random) picked up and both she and my wife were very confused. I have 2FA on my account and have checked to see all devices associates with my account. Everything checks out. I've also looked at the FaceTime settings and the numbers / email addresses by which I can be reached are all as they should be. Is this just a random "wires crossing" kind of thing, or should I be looking elsewhere? [link] [comments] |

Best adhesive tape for imac late 2015 27in 5k. My screen shattered OWC Kit! Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:49 PM PDT I purchased an SSD OWC Kit for my imac 27in 5K and everything in the Kit worked perfect and I got my SSD installed and everything was working fine. 2 days later my screen falls out... I have my replacement screen coming in 2 days and I ordered some 3M VHB (link below) that I plan to cut in strips. I'm actually thinking of adding gorilla epoxy on parts of the edge. I don't want to spend another 400 for another screen and don't have a need to renter the case. Please help. What are your thoughts on what I plan to do and what would you recommend? What I plan to get 3M Scotch 5952 VHB Tape: 1 in. x 15 ft. (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BU7038A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7EzOCb1YZZES2 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:30 PM PDT Trying to connect our 2017 MacBook Pro to our mid 2011 iMac to use as a secondary monitor. The MacBook is equipped with two Thunderbolt 3's (USB-C); we have a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, connected to the MacBook with a Thunderbolt cable from the adapter to the iMac. I hope that makes sense? We've tried all the F Key combinations to no avail. Maybe these two machines are not compatible? Are we missing a setting? All the videos and help from the internet makes this seem so easy. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
[Rant/Question] Will Apple ever fix their bluetooth stack? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:29 PM PDT For nearly a decade Apple has been having issues with their bluetooth stack. Most common are disconnecting keyboard and mouse and repeating clicks or keys. I and many I know have ran into this issue and currently with the latest macOS 10.14.3 is seems worse than ever before. I measured the signal strength using Apple bluetooth toolkit and as soon as the keyboard and mouse are 20-30cm away form the laptop (which is clamshell mode) the signal drops over 60% and they become laggy and stroppy. I've disabled the internal bluetooth and used an external bluetooth stick but the same problems occur as it probably uses the same bluetooth stack. I'm having these issues on both iMac and macbooks from 2010 till current machines. It is totally nuts that these issues still pop up every now and then. Thats the annoying part, sometimes its fine for a few days and something I want to throw my keyboard and mouse trough the room. If only Logitech would make a nice compact Mac keyboard/mosue set using their unified receiver but they don't. There is pretty much nothing out there that uses dongles rather than bluetooth that has Mac keys on the keyboard. And ideally Apple sorts out these issues. This issue is what's stopping me from buying a new macbook too. I can't be sure they have fixed this and it is totally crazy that my mouse and keyboard simply start to lag when the distance is only 30-4cm. I seriously can not phantom how the richest company in the world can not sort out their bluetooth. And yes, I did the normal thing of calling support and opening tickets, also tried resetting nvram and smc so many times I can do it with a blindfold. The problem is the bluetooth stack/macOS. When I boot into Linux or Windows on the same machines everything works fine. Also in clamshell mode. Heck, my bluetooth keyboard still works from 5 metres distance, but in macOS it stops working at a meter or so. It boggles my mind. Even bluetooth 2.0 support 10 meters. The machines I tested on all had at leats bluetooth 4.0 and I used a variety of bluetooth devices including Apple's own. They *all exhibit the same issues sooner or later. It doesn't matter what machine, it doesn't matter which macOS version. It is just crazy. I've found posts dating back almost 10 years all describing the same vague issues with bluetooth. I'm a big Apple fan but the way they implemented bluetooth is just laughable. When other OS's on the same machines don't have any issues the problem surely is in macOS. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:05 PM PDT I know I have to go to settings>do not disturb > activate> change automatically to manually However, when I try to click on activate, it's completely gray, I can't click it. I checked on my dad's phone, the word activate is black, you can actually click it and select manually. I don't know why my phone doesn't give me the option of setting it manually [link] [comments] |
2013 rMBP: Blank screen on boot, no key combos work. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:47 PM PDT I've got a 2013 rMBP that I was just using, surfing the web while charging and it suddenly just went blank. I restarted the laptop and now it plays the boot chime, followed by a blank, black screen and does nothing. I've tried resetting SMC, NVRAM, booting to recovery, and running hardware test. Any key combination results in: continued blank screen, and then a distorted, short, and looping Mac startup chime that repeats every 3 seconds (audio recording of it here: https://f.ipv7.sh/aqayu.m4a). It's not a POST error code. It's just really creepy. It will not boot from USB. It will basically not do anything but startup chime, and then play a distorted chime for infinity if I press any important key combination. I'm completely dumbfounded as to how this could've occurred and what the issue is. I'm assuming it's hardware related. I don't have tools to open the laptop, but I've kept it in perfect condition and it was never exposed to dirty/damp/extreme environments. Has anyone seen this before? And if so, what's the issue & fix? [link] [comments] |
How to make Apple Pencil 2 automatically turn off? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:30 PM PDT I just got an iPad Pro 11 inch and an Apple Pencil 2, and I bout the Zugu Muse case to put them in. The muse has a spot on the side of the iPad where the pencil fits in perfectly and continues to charge as usual, but it also has a slot on the back that more securely holds the pencil in place. I prefer to keep it on the back where I don't have to worry about it falling off but I realized today that it stays on the entire time it sits in the back pocket and by the time I want to use it it is dead. Is there any way to manually turn off the pencil or have it automatically go to sleep after a certain amount of time unused? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:06 PM PDT To begin this is my friends phone so I can't produce extra details right now. She can't figure it out and I also couldn't get anything to work. So pretty much, multiple AppStore apps such as Instagram and also stock apps such as the settings app will crash. The settings app cannot make it to certain sub categories after the app launches. iTunes will recognize the device but has the backup option grayed out. If we press restore it will attempt to make a backup and then say failed to connect to device or something similar during the backup process. Tried on 2 different computers, multiple cables, and on current iTunes version. I will be trying iMazing tomorrow but is there any other suggestions? She has no backups for some reason so it would be nice to get a backup. Also is it possible that if we get a back up on iMazing and a restore with iMazing that this problem will persist? I put the device through an OTA update to 12.2 from 11.3.1 this morning and the problems still exist. [link] [comments] |
Having trouble with my iPod Classic... Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:19 PM PDT I don't typically use Apple products, but I bought an iPod Classic in 2012 (160 GB) and it served me well for years. About a month ago it began playing, pausing, and changing tracks on its own (even when the lock button is on!) I understand that I've gotten a lot of mileage out of it, but do you guys know of any ways to fix it? [link] [comments] |
External monitor not recognized in Boot Camp under USB-C. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:37 PM PDT I have a 4k external monitor I connect to my Mac using the USB-C cable. I'm on it right now actually in Mojave. However, I installed Windows 10 using Boot Camp and if I plug it in, nothing shows up on it. I've looked all over to find out if it's even being recognized and I can't find it. In Display settings, I did the "detect" button and even that did not see it. Any idea how to get it to work? Thanks!!! [link] [comments] |

How to permanently get rid of virus search engine Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:49 PM PDT I'm not a very tech-savvy person at all, but I seem to have picked up some kind of virus or something a while ago. In short something called Aristotle Search Engine keeps popping up randomly every week or so, even after I delete it from my settings and remove the profile in system preferences. Is there any way to get rid of this for good? [link] [comments] |
Experiences with sending Macbook in for repair? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:55 PM PDT Hi all, I have a 2018 MBP and my spacebar has started acting up (either not responding properly or double-spacing), and I'm thinking about mailing it in for repair. I know it's my only option since I was told the stores generally don't do repairs themselves, but I'd just like to put my mind at ease by hearing other peoples' experiences with mailing it in. Namely, was your Macbook returned in the same exact condition? I'm paranoid that somewhere along the way (e.g. during mailing, during the repair process) that some cosmetic flaws like dents or scratches will happen, and then I read this AMA which makes me feel kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place (I also wouldn't want dust getting into my computer and all that). I do not plan on going third party since the repair would be free for me (either due to the keyboard replacement program, or due to the fact I have AppleCare), and I'm not sure if AASPs fall under the same rules with regards to AppleCare, or if they would fix it same-day? Also, how long did it take? Did it match up with the timeframe quoted? (I was quoted 3-5 business days, and as a student...that's kind of long to be without my laptop.) Anyway, your experiences would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Disable the home button on iPad Mini Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:49 PM PDT Hey everyone, I have a bit of an issue. I repaired my iPad mini and replaced the digitizer. The product I used was sub-par because some exposed circuitry now makes the home button go crazy. Is there a way that I can completely disable the home button for good / long periods of time? I can use it perfectly without the home thanks to gestures. Any help would be appreciated! (I really don't want to open it up again) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:49 AM PDT Hi! So I have an Apple TV in an apartment building and random people who live near me keep trying to project their shows on to it. It gives the 4 digit pin prompt, and then I hit menu and it goes away. Is there a way I can stop this? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Youtube won't play on Safari when connected to bluetooth speakers Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:51 AM PDT I've had weird playback issues with Youtube for 2 days and have tried restarting Safari, restarting the Mac, clearing cache, etc. nothing seems to have fixed the issue permanently. Chrome works fine. Then suddenly I happened to switch from my bluetooth connected speakers to internal (MBP 13" 2016 TB) and it worked. I've then tried this a dozen times and every time my bluetooth speakers are connected, the video will keep on spinning to load until it gives up and youtube asks to restart device. The only way to get it work is by switching audio to internal and then back to bluetooth. Even in the middle of a video if it is paused for a few seconds or longer, it will not resume back until I switch back. Anybody has had similar issues or knows of something I can try to fix it? Any help is appreciated. I'm running the latest version of macOS and Safari. [link] [comments] |
iCloud Shared Calendar URL for Magic Mirror (non-ios user needs help) Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:25 PM PDT Ok, so I'm a Windows user and know nothing about ios let alone iCloud, but your help would be much appreciated. My end goal is to add my daughters iCloud calendar to a MagicMirror I've made for her. I've been able to add a public calendar of my wife's using the public URL as the link to her calendar, but I'm having trouble with my Daughters. In her case, (which I see when I log into her iCloud Calendar), I see her husband's and her daughter's calendars which are shared with her. I also see a "Family" calendar she created in which hers, her husband's and her daughter's calendars are shared. However, as this is a shared calendar it does not have the option of private or public available to it (I want to grab the public URL to use with the MagicMirror). I can live with the fact that I can't get a URL from the "Family" shared calendar, but I don't see where I can get to her 'private' calendar to get it's public URL. In other words, I see the "Family", "Husband" and "her Daughter", but I don't see my daughter's calendar. Can anyone help me? [link] [comments] |
Safari keeps closing and telling me that it's "up to date"? Is this some malware? Or virus? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:17 PM PDT Whenever I'm using Safari, it just automatically quits, then a pop up comes up and says "Congratulations, Safari is up to date". It's annoying because even after I open safari it automatically quits again. I wish I could post an image of this message but apparently the mods don't like that. How do I stop this from happening? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:14 PM PDT Hey all, I noticed that one my programs was opened but I wasn't able to interact with it. I opened up Activity Monitor and I could see it open, but I was unable to interact with it and I was greeted with a dialog box saying that it can't be opened. I tried to open up terminal to try and force those programs to close, but that too was met with an error message. I'm hesitant to reboot because this has happened before and I'm worried it will mess something up internally. Any help is appreciated! Here is what I am seeing [link] [comments] |

Permanently disable Photos icloud message? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:29 AM PDT The ""icloud is enabled in iphoto. would you like to use icloud with photos instead?" regularly shows up, and I have no intention ever to use it. I find that is keeps asking rather annoying. My bigger concern is that my dad isn't very computer literate, and he also won't want to enable this option. If I buy 16GB RAM with the iMac 2019, does it come with 2 free DIMM slots or zero? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:11 AM PDT Question is the title: how many DIMM slots are free if one purchases the top-end iMac 2019 27" 5k, and chooses 16GB of RAM? I am hoping that Apple ships this config as 2 x 8GB but it might be 4 x 4GB. Anyone know for sure? [link] [comments] |
