Posted: 17 Jan 2019 07:33 PM PST I recently inherited a MacBook Air with a clean install of Yosemite. This is, as you can probably tell, my first Mac. If I install the High Sierra update, what would be the end result of a factory reset after doing that? Would I end up with a clean install of Yosemite or High Sierra? I am unclear how the MacOS reset process works. Are there install files for the machine's original OS sitting on another partition like many PCs or is the reset process just clearing the excess files from whatever version of MacOS is currently installed? Thanks for helping out this Mac newbie! [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Jan 2019 07:49 PM PST Hi all, so I was wondering if there's any way for me to write journals every day and save them on to a folder that is password protected. I have made a few password protected folders, but I can't seem to add to them and if I want to add I'm forced to make a new one. Any tips or general knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Posted: 17 Jan 2019 06:00 PM PST When i work i open a fuck ton of finder windows and i intend to come back to them. However, even with the newest macbook pro upper 15" base model, it can slow stuff down considering im usually running vm's and other stuff too. Theres an app for chrome called session buddy which does pretty much the same thing for chrome tabs. It simply saves the session as a list of links and has them separated even by which window they were on and it makes life easier. is there a way to do any of the following (solutions i theorized that would satisfy me for the time being)
I will give you an amazon gift card if you solve my issue as this would be life changing. steve, if you can hear me, i need your help. ps right now what i am doing is creating a new tag and using the touch bar and hitting cmd+w *tap* cmd+w *tap* etc... [link] [comments]

Problem regarding Ethernet speed Posted: 17 Jan 2019 09:27 AM PST Hello, I'm having a peculiar problem with MacOS and Ethernet. Sometimes when my Macbook wakes, it will not give me the full 240Mpbs connection that i have at home. I will only get between 10-90. A Windows desktop/laptop is not suffering from this and i used it with the exact same switch/cable. The problem usually goes away after a reboot, which leads me to believe that this is a Software issue rather than a hardware issue. It's also noticeable that everything that is Youtube related content at that point is really slow, my Macbook has loads of issues trying to play 4K footage. The procedures i already tried: - Rebooting (Ofcourse) - Removing the ethernet adapter from the mac, network settings and re-adding it, this will fix the issue untill the next sleep - Trying another Ethernet adapter, the issue remains - My 3440x1440p screen is connected on the same end as the ethernet, i've tried connecting the screen on the other end, makes no difference. I have no idea what to do anymore, maybe a clean install of Mojave. I didn't recall having these problems in High Sierra. [link] [comments]
Help deleting something please! Posted: 17 Jan 2019 03:25 PM PST Hi all. First time posting on this sub & I'm seeking a bit of help please. I would like to securely delete (7 or 35 pass erase) a folder from my external HDD (not SSD) that I use with my mac running High Sierra. I know secure delete is gone, which is what I would have previously used & appreciate why. So any suggestions? Would prefer not to have to install any new software to do this but if it's the only way, okay. I've done a bit of light reading online so I roughly know what I'm talking about (I think!) but assume I'm not too tech savvy please. Thanks a bunch :) [link] [comments]
Why can't I create new pages in launchpad like I can on my iPhone? Posted: 17 Jan 2019 02:50 PM PST Makes no sense. I tried to make a new page by making the apps overflow and then organizing them, and this worked until I restarted my computer and it completely randomized them and condensed them. Posted: 17 Jan 2019 02:51 AM PST Howdy. I have a MacBook Air 2013. I keep running into a myriad of issues, but everything seems to stem from no disk space available? I'm even stuck on macOS Sierra still, with the old Safari format and all. Apparently I don't have enough room to download the new OS. I have the incessant "Your disk is almost full" notification. I have next to nothing on my MacBook (maybe?? fuck if I know) and a backup hard drive to plug into/store all of my files that I migrated over. I don't know what to do anymore, and I don't wanna give up on Nakuru (thats his/my MacBooks name) I'm sorry if this info seems kind of all over the place. My dad was my go-to IT (and the person who gifted me my MacBook so many years ago) but, he moved away and now I am on my own and a little stupid. I can provide more info as needed, but I was wondering if maybe just transferring whatever meager files I have left? and then a full on hard reset/wipe? Just start fresh and hope he pulls through? Sorry if this sounds overly dramatic or anything, I just wanna play the sims and have my old boy back and running. Thank you!!! [link] [comments]

Suddenly I can't ssh to any system Posted: 17 Jan 2019 10:57 AM PST My MacBook Pro (2017) has suddenly stopped being able to connect to any other system using SSH. The connection attempts just timeout. Bad since this is my work computer and I am a system admin. I have tried wired, wireless, VPN, and a system on the same segment. Nothing works. I reboot the system using bootcamp and putty under windows is fine. I have a reserved IP so with either OS I have the same IP when wired. The system is running 10.14.2. I am a Unix/Linux admin and not up on the idiosyncrasies of MacOS and any pointers are appreciated. Sample connection attempt: MacBook-Pro:~ xxxxxx$ ssh -v 192.168.202.1 OpenSSH_7.9p1, LibreSSL 2.7.3 debug1: Reading configuration data /Users/xxxxxx/.ssh/config debug1: /Users/xxxxxx/.ssh/config line 1: Applying options for * debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 48: Applying options for * debug1: Connecting to 192.168.202.1 [192.168.202.1] port 22. debug1: connect to address 192.168.202.1 port 22: Operation timed out ssh: connect to host 192.168.202.1 port 22: Operation timed out MacBook-Pro:~ xxxxxx$ [link] [comments]
Icons Not Appearing on Desktop Posted: 17 Jan 2019 06:19 AM PST Firstly apologies if this is frequently asked. I've searched around the net and can't seem to find anyone with the same issue as me though. Basically every now and then (around once a week) files I save to desktop do not appear on the desktop as icons. (Photos, screenshots etc). If I search for the file name I can find the file and if I restart my Mac they will then turn up on the desktop but until I do that they aren't there. Does anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it? I was hoping it was just a little initial bug with Mojave but months later and it still persists. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Really specific question about workflow/automator Posted: 17 Jan 2019 04:13 AM PST I didn't post this in r/shortcuts since that doesn't seem to cover MacOS Automator stuff anymore. So I have a folder-action automation set up that is supposed to add the extension .jpeg to files dropped into the folder. It works! The problem is it keeps working . . . and working . . . and working. It adds the extension over and over and over again and it wont stop! Is there some kind of additional command I need to make it run only once on each file? [link] [comments]
Does anyone have an appleID with an old version of MacOS registered on it I could use for 2 minutes? Posted: 17 Jan 2019 07:27 AM PST I'm trying to reset my Mac mini. Basically I can't reinstall the factory software because I don't have a version of macOS registered on to my account from back when you still had to pay for macOS. This means it won't let me install any software on it, so it's just bricked. Can anyone help me out with this? I'm just trying to get it to where I can install Sierra on it. [link] [comments] |
