Honest Discussion About Windows v. MacOS Machines In The Studio Environment Posted: 17 Jan 2019 01:42 AM PST I'm posting this in multiple treads to get as much info as possible before a large purchase. I understand this is an Apple based subreddit and I probably won't be able to get some answers to my Windows questions, but perhaps I could get some of you guys to explain why you stay on MacOS for professional work. So I'm gearing up to invest in a new computer, my MacBook 2012 is obviously getting a bit older. I'm starting to have battery issues, and the grey screen of death happens periodically. In my research for a new machine I've been peeking over at the Windows side and I've been really impressed with some of what I'm seeing from Dell most of all, Razor, MSI, Lenovo. No matter what side I go with I'd like an i9 laptop. My main question is would I have a negative experience switching from a Mac to a Windows computer in the near future? I've built my studio around my Mac, I have an Apollo Mk 3, use Pro Tools Ultimate, Slate Digital, NI Komplete and a suite of other plugins. I know my Apollo would need an adapter to work, but how would anything else work switching from Mac to Windows? A few other questions I have are:
A few other notes, I have a producer friend who is a PC advocate and he's been pushing the Windows side in favor of power and user control, and I have a friend/mentor who actually works for Avid on the Pro Tools audio team who's been pushing the Mac side in favor of stability. I'm not sure what to go with because I trust both of them 😅 I'd appreciate any input from people who switched from either side or have some kind of in depth technical knowledge about either side. Sorry if a lot of this is pointless information or if the decision really doesn't matter, no matter what I get it's gonna be about $3k and I'm scared to make a mistake at that price. List all installed software with version and date via terminal? Posted: 16 Jan 2019 11:04 PM PST I need to get all of the installed software with their corresponding version and date of installation via terminal. Is this possible with a single command line? [link] [comments]
i desperately need help with this partition Posted: 16 Jan 2019 08:13 PM PST okay, so i have a 500gb hdd. i created a 200-ish gb boot camp partition to install windows onto, but booting into windows didn't work, so i booted back into macOS and used boot camp assistant to remove the 200gb partition i created for windows. but the storage space was not given back to my macOS partition. in disk utility, there is something called "APPLE HDD HTS545050A7E362 Media" with an arrow next to it, that when clicked displays the macOS partition named "Macintosh HD", but nothing else. the apple hdd part says that the disk has 500gb, and the macintosh hd part says that i've used 208 of 300gb. i really dont understand anything in the screenshots i took, i'm just really wondering how i can get my 200 extra gb back. here are the screenshots of the disk utility, first one is the apple hdd, second is the macintosh hd, third is the partition map that i opened with apple hdd highlighted, and fourth is the partition map that i opened with macintosh hd highlighted. can anyone make sense of this for me? Posted: 16 Jan 2019 06:27 PM PST So I've been backing up to two different external drives on my MB PRO 2016 for two years with no issues. I plugged in the external drive and now it says "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup". It gets about 90% done then it fails. Same error message using both drives. Apple support did not give me much assistance and they are escalating my case. Plenty of available space on both of my drives. When I backup I also backup an attached external drive that stores all of my photos. Weird thing is when I go to Time Machine and exclude the Macintosh HD and only backup the pictures it successfully completes the backup. Any thoughts? I'm not too good with interpreting files, paths, etc so if you have an answer don't be afraid to dumb it down for me. [link] [comments]
How to install Windows 10 on external disk in MacOS Mojave? Posted: 16 Jan 2019 07:28 AM PST Hello, I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) and I have Mojave installed into it. I am trying to install windows 10 into it but do not have space as its only 128 GB, so instead I want to install it into an external hard drive. I don't know how to do it or see any options in the bootcamp. I have seen guides but they are for older MacOS. Can anyone advise? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Kernal_task using very high (>500%) CPU Posted: 16 Jan 2019 04:15 PM PST Hi, Been having this issue with my MacBook Pro this past week that I can't figure out. The kernel_task issue seems to be common but none of the threads I've found reveal a proper solution. Basically my laptop is extremely slow and the fan is going crazy but it's freezing cold. I have tried resetting the SMC and formatting the disk to no avail. When it first started playing up I did the most recent update which fixed it for a day or 2 then back again. I took it to Apple a few days ago and they couldn't find anything when they ran diagnostics, they took it in for a day and opened it up, found the fans were clogged with dust and cleared it out. The laptop went back to working fine for a day and today it's playing up again. Anyone know any other possible solutions to this problem? Can anyone who has experienced this reveal what they found to be the cause and solution? Thanks [link] [comments]

Open YouTube links with Chrome but any other with Safari Posted: 16 Jan 2019 10:19 AM PST Hi, I have macOS Mojave. Is there a way to set macOS to open any link that is a youtube video with Google Chrome, and any other link to open it with Safari? Because as you may know, YouTube is not optimized well for Safari and not even plays resolution above 1440p, so I'm using Chrome for YouTube but Safari for everything else and it's annoying when someone sends me a link in iMessage or Facebook and then having to copy it, open chrome and paste it. I want youtube video links to open automatically with chrome but any other link to open with Safari, is there a way to do that?? [link] [comments]
Accessing a HDD pulled from my WD My Cloud Mirror NAS Posted: 16 Jan 2019 05:11 AM PST I have one of the HDDs from my My Cloud Mirror NAS - it was set up as a RAID 1. The NAS and the other drive are in storage, as I am moving. I figured having the drives separate was better odds, and having one with me would make data recovery possible. I need some files off of it, so I picked up a cheep dock (Korean company "With&All", Model WNA-600Dock), and plugged in the drive, but I get a message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. Initialize.../Ignore/Eject" Initialize opens disk utility, which shows external drives grayed out, not mounted, and connected by USB: disk2s1 Linux Swap 2.15 GB disk2S4 USB External Physical Volume - MSDos (FAT) 1.07 GB disk2S2 USB External Physical Volume - MSDos (FAT) 4 TB disk2S3 USB External Physical Volume - MSDos (FAT) 1.07 GB I cannot mount any of these volumes. Any ideas, other than getting a WD enclosure? [link] [comments]
iMac (late 2009) upgrade to Mojave? Posted: 16 Jan 2019 02:22 AM PST I've got an old 21.5 inch iMac, late 2009 model. It's running High Sierra without issue but should I upgrade this iMac to MacOS 10.14 Mojave? I know that iOS 12 does speed up older iPhones, does MacOS 10.14 the same for older Mac's? Thanks!
