    macOS Hello friends! I want to a buy new pro model upgrading from my 2014 air. But can’t decide, if I should go with the Touch Bar or non-touch version. Can you describe how useful/often you use the Touch Bar in your day to day activities?

    Why does my mid 2009 13" 2.53GHz MacBook Pro with a 250GB SSD and w/ El Capitan start up faster than my 2018 13" 2.3GHz MacBook Pro w/ Mojave?

    Both systems have 8GB of ram and start up with Dropbox and nothing else.

    Organizing Files in Multiple Disks?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 06:02 PM PST

    I'm using multiple disks right now, and running into trouble.

    Owing to limited disk space, I need an external ssd for the system, applications, and ongoing work, another larger but slower external ssd for additional files, older work, and so on, and of course an even larger ssd for Time Machine. I was unable to install on the internal ssd.

    Owing to compatibility problems with newer pdfs, I have to convert pdfs to either an older version or to mobis to read on my Kindle. I use Willus's k2pdfopt -mode copy -dev dx to convert scanned pdfs such as from the internet archive, ocrmypdf -f --output-type pdfa-1 to sort out text when needed, and Pdf to Epub+ to convert pdf-born-pdfs. I use Calibre to organize a library of these files on my system disk, and to set up transfers, epub to mobi conversion, etc.

    Calibre can only keep 1 file per format per book. So it can't keep the original of a pdf and the processed version. For some purposes, such as readily-available internet archive books, I can toss the original. But for many others, I need to keep the original, or even keep track of which files I've converted and which I've imported into Calibre.

    ... I've tried to organize these in Finder, and to tag them in Finder. So the normal conversion-and-import process would involve alternating converted, original, converted, original, and the color tags would make this visible, with exceptions equally visible. I tried to use Red for files I'd imported, orange for files I'd logged in Calibre but not imported, green for files I'd skipped because they rely on graphics and aren't suitable for the Kindle Dx, and gray for files I'd skipped with no intention to import.

    I can use Mass Rename to verbally tag files before import. But that's not so visible.

    I can't use Finder to color tag the files on my additional files disk. I keep getting error code -36 when I try. I posted another thread about this.

    Does anyone know a better tool to organize files and to highlight original files and processed files and when original files lack processed matches? I've looked at Forklift 2, but it doesn't let me search specific folders-- only to search the main disk. And Forklift 3, which is a lot more expensive. And Devonthink which doesn't seem to support Finder operations but is supposed to be good at its own thing. Any other ideas? Any tricks I've missed?

    3 locations for sshd config

    Posted: 16 Jan 2019 12:30 AM PST

    So I want to harden my SSH daemon when Remote Login is enabled.

    So far I've found:

    ```
    /private/etc/ssh/sshd_config
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh.plist -> protected by SIP
    /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    ```

    Why are there 3 locations, and what is the difference?

    How does backing up a Photos Library File work with iCloud

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 10:53 PM PST

    Back in the iPhoto days this was a bit more straightforward. I'd like to backup my current photos library as is before overhauling it, in case I make some mistakes.

    I've already made a copy of my Photos Library file on my external hard drive. But I'm wondering what this file actually is able to do, or what's its purpose/limitations are, considering that I'm using iCloud to store the originals of the photos.

    For reference the library file is about 6GB and the photos take up about 139GB in iCloud

    [HELP] Multi-Function printer scanner not recognized

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 01:13 PM PST

    Hi! I have downloaded the drivers for my Canon MF217w, and only the printer portion of the printer is being detected by MacOS, and not the other function such as scanning. Anyone have any ideas on things I can try and tricks I can use to see if I can get it to work. Thanks

    Can’t open some Word files

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 04:26 PM PST

    Hi, I have a lot of Microsoft's Word documents on my MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.2 in a path of folders (folders inside folders), created on a windows laptop about two years ago. A vary strange thing happens: every time I'm trying to open those documents with Word (I have Office for Mac 2016 installed and updated), the Word opens but the page is blank, like it can't open the document. If I drag the document in the desktop and open it from there, it opens fine! If I have the document inside the folder that doesn't open with a double click, but try to open it from inside the Word by clicking File —> Open (and then browse files and find it), it opens just fine again! So, why it can't open the documents with a double click from this particular folder??

    Can anyone help me??

    Is there a way to transfer music from my iphone to new mac without a cable? (never been previously synced on that computer)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 08:33 AM PST

    Just snagged a used 2017 mbp this morning because my old one got water damaged yesterday. I just want to copy a couple of albums from my iphone to the new computer, but they forgot to put a usb port on it lol. I don't even want to copy most of my stuff onto the computer or use it to sync my phone because its only 120gb. Or maybe you can just partially sync the stuff you want? But I don't think that's an option going iphone to mac, only the other way around. Obviously i'll have to buy an adapter eventually, but until then can this be done... like through icloud files or something? I'm a bit dumb when it comes to apple stuff, it seems all the easy stuff is really intuitive, but anything beyond the norm you have to do in really specific ways if they even let you at all.

    Oh also if anyone knows a way to get some old files off of my dead 2015 mbp I'm all ears. Otherwise I guess I'm stuck buying a torx screwdriver set and an adapter for the ssd if it doesn't turn on after a week of drying. Tried after 24 hours of drying because I'm impatient and would need to know if I had to buy a new laptop anyway. It boots to the apple logo and shuts itself off after about a second. Not all hope is lost but I'm not really counting on it to work even after a week more of drying.

    Bought a 2007 MacBook Pro (a1226) with only Windows 10 installed. I can't get Mac OS Snow Leopard to install.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 09:26 AM PST

    I've downloaded several Snow Leopard images and used both PowerIso and Transmac make usb drive images and a DVD. Nothing works. I just get the Apple logo at first and then a circle with a slash through it. The firmware is updated. I have never worked on Macs and I have exhausted everything I can google or think of. Can you guys think of anything I'm not doing right?

    Jumping/Skipping Mouse Scroll on Mojave

    Posted: 15 Jan 2019 03:21 AM PST

    Hi all,

    I'm having an issue with the scroll on my cordless mouse - since I upgraded to Mojave it is skipping and jumping (i.e. I'll scroll down and it will jump up).

    Initially thought this was due to the mouse itself but I've tried another mouse and have the same issue. Has anyone else had this issue or know of any fix?

    Have checked online and can't find much useful. Thanks in advance
