Preordered iPad pro and new Apple Pencil on October 31st, shipped on November 10th. Out of luck for return?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:25 PM PST

    Hello,

I preordered the new iPad Pro and the new Apple Pencil for my mom as soon as the preorder was available. Both were given as a christmas gift and she has since found out she cannot use the pencil the way she intended to (not much so for drawing or taking notes but instead to navigate as a finger replacement). I figured I was still in the holiday return policy and could simply return the pencil but it seems I am out of luck as the order was shipped 4 days before the start of the holiday policy?

Would it be worth contacting apple over this? It kinda penalizes people who preordered the new iPads as soon as they were available...

    thanks!

kernel panics, can anyone interpret this crash report?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:40 PM PST

I've been experiencing kernel panics on my 2012 15" rMBP. I installed the beta of Mojave a month or 2 ago but this has only been occurring in the past 2 weeks. Any help would be appreciated!

Ipod touch has been permanently disabled for years and the home button is broken

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:06 PM PST

So I recently found my old ipod touch and I've been itching to see the cringe photos and messages from my childhood, the only problem is the ipod is disabled and has to connect to iTunes. So I do as it says and connect the ipod to iTunes and then iTunes says I have to put in the passcode to unlock the ipod but in order to put in the passcode I need connect to iTunes and it's a neverending cycle. The home button also doesnt work and I have to use touch assist. I'm hoping I can get into the ipod without wiping it. Thanks

Got a receipt for something I didn’t pay for through my email, how do I get my money back.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:10 PM PST

Apple sent me an email and the receipt states that I bought PES 2019 coins for $10 and that I live in Australia (I live in the uk).

There's a link to in the receipt but it looks kinda dodgy, here's the link

I just want to be careful as there are a lot of internet scams these days.

    FaceTime not working

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:19 PM PST

So I recently bought an iPhone X and unnoticed that when someone tries to FaceTime me, on the screen it'll have an option for end call or end accept, as if I was on another call, which I'm not. My phone could be off, I'll receive the ring for a FaceTime call, but can't answer. I have to end the call and call the person back to FaceTime with them. I am currently running iOS 12.1.2

How to prevent the MacBook battery from draining too much?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:06 PM PST

I frequently turn on my MacBook and find that the battery is at 5% or less. I know that running the battery all the way down is really bad for it so on Windows I always set it to automatically hibernate if the battery goes until 15%-20% or so. (It's also nice to always have at least some battery left for emergencies.)

Is there a way to configure macOS to go into hibernation mode when the battery reaches a certain level so that the battery never drains completely?

I've been told that I need to replace my perfectly functional mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:39 PM PST

I'm broke and don't want to. The hinge is a little broken but I think that's fixable and definitely not a reason to buy a completely new device, IMO. How can I find a third party who can fix this so-called "dinosaur?"

Fix/Upgrade iMac or buy new Mac Mini?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:22 PM PST

I have a late 2012 iMac (1 TB Fusion drive) that has hard drive issues. It had been extremely slow leading up to a point where it was pretty much non-functional. I tried to re-install the OS in hopes that might fix the issues and the reinstall failed. After that point, I was unable to get past the reinstall screens and the system hard drive didn't come up in disk utility. After having my Mac saavy FIL look at it, he thinks the hard drive was somehow corrupted and possibly is going bad. He was able to get the machine to run off an external drive, so he thinks the problem is limited to the internal drive. (My stuff is backed up on Backblaze, so I'm not too concerned about being able to pull stuff off the drive.

My primary use for this computer is iTunes, my Silhouette machine, and decently intense photo editing--I use Lightroom & Photoshop, but I'm not running a photography business. No gaming or video editing.

I have a trusted repair guy who can install a new drive for $150 + the drive cost. ~$100 for a 1 TB disc drive or 1 TB SDD for ~$240. The machine is otherwise in good shape and I was happy enough with its performance before the drive issues started. I have been expecting that an almost 6 year old machine was going to go sooner or later and I've been eyeing the new Mac Minis. Due to cost constraints, I would purchase the 3.6GHz model with a 256 GB SSD for ~$1000 + the cost of a new monitor. This is the route I would go, but the limited drive space on the SSD is giving me a little pause as I'm used to have a terabyte at my disposable. I know I can make do with external drives, but I'm somewhat (perhaps needlessly) concerned about slowness where Lightroom+photos on an external drive are involved. I usually edit them while stored on my drive and archive them to an external (and Backblaze) after.

What would you do? (all are options $$ wise, but we also have a laptop I use for daily browsing, so I don't consider this computer a "need")

--Spend ~$400 fixing/upgrading the machine to a SSD with the expectation of getting 2 or more good years out of it before abandoning it to the kids (we'll need a "kid computer" for school work about then). If I do this, would adding another 8GB of RAM (currently has 8) to bring it to 16 be worth it?

--Get the Mac Mini (expecting to get 4-5 good years out of it)

--Get the Mac Mini and keep the iMac around to fix in a few months for kid use--in this case I probably wouldn't bother with a SSD and the total fix would be about $250.

    Thanks in advance!

Why am I constantly having to use YouTube or Genius to listen to music because iTunes likes to get stuck on 0:00?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:02 PM PST

I've been an Apple Music subscriber the past year, the iPhone version runs great, and is integrated well. But using iTunes on my pc is rage inducing. I can be listening to a song fine one minute, close iTunes and open it up an hour later and it's a 50/50 shot it'll play again or not. Then after 50 attempts of opening it sometimes I get lucky and it plays as if nothing happened. Other times I have to reboot my computer just to listen to a song.

I've tried reinstalling, running as admin, killing Apple processes, signing out of my account, reauthorizing. I've tried contacting Apple for support and they just want to run me around all the general troubleshooting bullshit with no actual solution. I've googled this issue and it's not super widespread, and every thread I've seen has no actual fixes.

I'm paying for this service that barely works. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this issue, or do I need to call up Apple support every hour for the next month before something actually gets fixed?

    How to delete photos?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:12 PM PST

I have a lot of photos on my iPhone. I have only 5GB iCloud memory. My iPhone keeps telling me that my iCloud storage is used up so I'm trying to clear up space. I just bought my first iMac and I'm trying to figure out how this app works. I have deleted what I could on my phone. When I go to iCloud on my iMac some of those photos I deleted are still there. I tried to delete a whole bunch of photos in the iCloud of my iMac. After I delete those I see they are still on my iPhone. I want to delete the photos off the iCloud of both devices. I am downloading the photos to my hard drive storage that's why. I really don't need the photos in my iCloud and on one or another device they are still there. I am getting pretty frustrated because it feels like I have to delete the same photos twice or three times. What's going on?

Sent too many pictures through messages and now my messages app won’t open on my MacBook Air

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:54 PM PST

I've done this before. I'm an idiot.

Is there any way to fix this myself (instead of another Genius Bar appointment)?

I sent a friend 28 pictures and in my messages app trying to open and update with my current texts, it crashes and gives me the spinny wheel of death.

    Thanks! Happy New Year!

My IPod went “Live” soon as I started music.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:31 PM PST

I'm just curious as to why my IPod showed "Live" as soon as I started my music, I've never seen this before my Bluetooth is shut off and I'm just wondering if it is a glitch or not.

I wish i could fix that title.

    AirPod issues

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:24 PM PST

I've had my AirPods for some time now and have just recently start having issues with them. For the past month or so, one of my AirPods will quit working and I have to take them out and put them back in the case then put them back in for it to begin working again. Just recently they have started "cracking, missing, or popping" when watching videos and listening to music. It makes it hard to focus and even harder to watch because of the missing audio.

As I'm writing this, my right AirPod isn't working while listening to music.

Post writing that sentence the left one just quit and I have no idea why because they are both still in my ear haha.

Are they on their way out? I'm not sure what is happening. The battery shouldn't be low, I charge them every night and they rarely get to be below 75% charge.

    Thank you :)

Edit: I should also mention that since the first day I got them, I have had these weird (almost burn like) marks that will not go away where the magnets are that snap the case together. My sister has a pair of AirPods that do not have this problem and I really feel like there is something completely wrong with my AirPods.

Huge number of unknown folders added to trash

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:38 PM PST

I just checked my trash to empty it, and I realized that I have a huge number of 2-character file folders that were added in droves between October 18th and November 7th. I have NO idea where these came from. The folders contain a string of characters with a .file extension. Has anyone seen this before?

iPad Air Stuck on low battery & Wont power on

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:39 PM PST

    Device : iPad Air

    Model : A1474

Problem : No matter how long it's plugged into the outlet it stay a the low battery screen & will not power on. Current Screen

    Attempts to fix:

1)Cleaned power port with small anti-static brush, & used multiple lighting cables.

2)DFU reset, When I tried this it looked as if it was going to work, (here & here) but it didn't right after the finish screen the iPad would disconnect and bring back this screen on the iPad.

Plea : What if anything is there I can do? It is my grandmothers she said when she brought it to the Apple store they basically told her to buy a new one. This iPad is my grandmother's main connection to her family. Thank you in advance.

Phone broke how to retrieve apple id

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:03 PM PST

My iPhone 6 broke yesterday, and I got a new iPhone XR. It is completely kaput, and will no longer work again.

My question is, what will happen to my APPLE ID? I still know the password and all, I just can't get a verification code due to the number being on my old phone. Can, and if so how do I retrieve it? How long will it take?

My account still works on a computer, though.

macOS install failed yet I wasn’t installing macOS.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:24 AM PST

First: it is a 2011 11" MacBook Air with i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD. Bought it early 2012. Always just upgraded macOS, never fresh install. Only upgraded to High Sierra a few months ago, don't think it'll run the newest OS without tweaks. Was my primary computer until late 2017 when I bought a used ThinkPad (great deal). Been using my MacBook for bill paying and downloading media (onto an external drive).

Second: problem is on boot up it says macOS can't install yet worked fine last week and been months since I upgraded macOS.

Details: Been using it 2-3 times a month for paying bills and recording my finances in Numbers. Just a good bill pay setup and I feel good about security with it. Zero problems but it did seem slightly sluggish the last month. No noticeable battery swelling but given its age, battery isn't that good. Usually I just leave it asleep but sometimes if I know it'll be over a week I'll shut it down. It had been shutdown last time.

Today I went to turn it on to pay a bill. macOS announces it had problems installing, shows a log file, and then wants to shutdown. WTF, I haven't messed with the OS for at least a month, and that was just standard updates. In all these years, minimal problems from this MacBook. And now suddenly it seems totally bonked. But at least it seems to be software.

Eventually got my bill paid with my iPad. Pulled up my Numbers spreadsheet on the ThinkPad. Might continue doing that and don't really need the MacBook... but would like to understand what happened and fix it, just because.

Did the 2011 models have internet recovery? Option & R on startup? First Mac I bought that didn't come with an install DVD. Fortunately I don't have anything on the MacBook so not worried about losing any data. I do have all the macOS install files saved on an external drive, but only other Mac I have is my old 12" 2002 PowerBook, not sure if I can make a usb installer with it. Do have a Win10 ThinkPad, but again, not sure if I can make a usb installer with that (for a Mac).

I would be more understanding of some type of hardware failure over this macOS gone crazy deal.

Obviously I'll be trying to wipe it and reinstall any macOS on it and then up it to High Sierra. But very curious if anyone else has seen this. Had Macs since 2002 and never seen anything like this before. I've seen a HHD slowly die and then actually die. I've seen a logic board go bad slowly and then suddenly 100% give out. But I've never seen any OSX or macOS just crap out before without reason.

How to turn off a water damaged phone when the touch screen/power button stops working?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:39 PM PST

The other week my girlfriend dropped her iPhone into water. We immediately tried turning it off to prevent damage but the touch screen stopped working so we couldn't slide the power switch on screen to power off.

Isn't there any hardware button combo that will power off the device? I know holding the power and home buttons resets it but then it just reboots and starts up again. Then the handset started to get really hot. Stupid non-removable battery!!

If this ever happens to mine, any way to save it/power down??

iTunes only syncs podcasts one way

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:03 PM PST

I'm having an odd problem with iTunes, my iPhone and podcasts. I listen to podcasts only on my iphone, and everything works perfectly as long as I do not sync with my Mac using iTunes. However, if I do sync my phone there's a problem. The played state of podcasts I've listened to does not sync to iTunes. Instead iTunes updated my iPhone, marking played podcasts as unplayed. It will also mark podcasts as inactive, as now my iPhone thinks I haven't listened to a podcast in months. The only way I've found to avoid this is to manually go into iTunes and mark podcasts as played and clicking resume downloads in each podcast to get them downloading again. Any ideas on how to fix this?

iPhone unable to update for weeks. Restoring iCloud backup.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:01 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/1uEElZZ

The screenshots above suggest an iCloud restore is progress. I don't understand why? My Mac and iPhone are both on the same page.

All I can think of is that I have uploaded 10,000 photos to Apple Photos on my Mac, but those are all uploaded now (have been for several days) and I can view them all on my iPhone, too.

I've left my phone on charge over night connected to wi-fi as well. Every day, it says the update will try again later.

    What do?

    iPod touch 5 iCloud lock

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:57 PM PST

I received an iPod touch 5th generation from one of my friends at school. It had belonged to a girl who had recently left but had left her iPod behind. It is iCloud locked and stuck with the original Apple ID. Contact with the girl has been lost, and the iPod remains locked. I don't want to waste tech. Any help??
