    Here’s what Apple isn’t

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 05:23 AM PST

    • Doomed
    • Over
    • Dead in the water
    • No longer able to innovate
    • Creator of a phone that nobody loves
    • A company that nobody likes any more

The above words and phrases have been adapted from some of the fantastically shite opinion pieces from mainstream media posted on this sub this week.

Are the results bad? Sure. But why does a single lost target mean that, overnight, the iPhone became crap, Apple lost its ability to innovate, and is now doomed? How can you possibly declare that overnight? Especially when so much was attributed to China's economy?

Do you know what happens to your Macbook when you send it in for repair?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:54 PM PST

I work at an Apple repair depot, a company called CSAT Solutions.

There is no schedule at this company. You show up for work at 7am and you could be there twelve hours. It's impossible to make plans because you don't know when you'll leave. Overtime is not mandatory but you wouldn't know it by the way they push you to have all the work done every day. Something they'll say when hiring is "7am to finish" Recently, they have begun to hire more people because their retention rate is horrible. The problem is that most of the people they hire are incredibly incompetent. You could have never worked on a computer before and as long as you can read and write English you're in. The result is you have a bunch of people that don't know even the basics of troubleshooting computers repairing $2000+ machines. These people also can't handle the workload so it puts incredible pressure on veteran techs that not only have to worry about their work but other's work as well. To add insult to injury, these new technicians are being given a $750 bonus for staying with the company for 3 months. All the while technicians that have been at the company for a decade haven't seen another penny.

The air quality is terrible. There's a thick layer of dust that's probably been there since Nixon, covering the walls and pipes and AC ducts. It's a warehouse environment that is climate controlled but it's hot most of the time and even then it's just circulating dirty air. Still, management will get on you for having a dirty/dusty workstation but wont do anything about the air quality.

In the end you'll get a refurbished motherboard that will most likely fail again because the company that repairs them does a shitty job. Sometimes the "new" board we're gonna use looks worse than the one you sent your unit in with. I have received boards with corrosion and we are told to use them and cannot change it unless it fails for something.

Every aspect of this company is a joke. Their shopfloor system is always crashing. And they still expect us to finish the work. We get the units in the morning and they're supposed to ship out at night.

If anyone has any questions about anything I will answer. I know this seemed like more of a rant and frustration with my job but I'm finally getting fed up. Hopefully something good comes out of this. There are a lot of good people there that can't afford to find another job.

I have worked as; Genius/Specialist, Business Team Lead & Creative Team, and the Machine Learning team.

I was hired in through the Apple Store Leader Program, did a stint in each section of the store and because of previous experience did a stint with the ML Team.

I officially quit yesterday after the All Call with Tim Cook, as I can no longer support the future vision. I'm willing to answer any question that isn't behind an NDA(most ML items)

edit: verification gone. Good point was made to me.

Unpopular opinion: The 2018 MacBook Air is a terrible value for money

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:30 PM PST

This post is meant to be educational to those shopping for a laptop and don't speak computer. I'm posting this as a PSA that spending the same amount of money to get a laptop in 2015 and 2018 will actually get you less performance

Lets rewind to 2015: one could purchase a 13" MacBook Pro mid tier model with an i5, 8gb of ram, and 256gb storage for a retail price of $1500. This processor would score about a 320 on a cinebench r15 multicore score per notebookcheck, which is pretty good for a dual core machine.

Three years later, one can walk into an apple store with $1400 and buy a mid tier Macbook Air with the same storage and ram specifications, and get an insultingly slower processor, scoring about 285 on the same test per notebookcheck. The leftover $100 will probably be spent on dongles. Not only that, but magsafe, ports, and reliable keyboard are lost from the 2015 model.

This kind of performance out of a machine costing about 1.5k is disgusting and preying on those who do not understand how computers work. To add insult to injury, a few year old Thinkpad X1 carbon or Dell XPS 13 will hit about the same benchmark scores and usually run about $250-350 on the used market. I'm adding that note not to say that one should run out and buy a used Windows laptop, but just to give some reference to how comically under powered the new MacBook Air is.

tl;dr : unless you 'need' a 2.7 lb MacBook and don't care that it performs worse than a three year old MacBook Pro that retailed for the same price at the time, avoid the 2018 Macbook Air

Anyone else as annoyed by google AMP viewer as much as I am? Hear my case...

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 11:42 PM PST

    1. It restricts the search bar from being fully dissolved into the top of the screen, making the view smaller.

    2. I really enjoy using Apples automatic reader view, and it stops that from loading.

    3. Without the auto reader, I have to see the whole website, when I just want to read the article. With most websites UI showing there banner, taking even more space.

    4. Because the screen is so much smaller now, I have to force the actual website to load because it's in usable (IMO), and that's another couple taps.

It really seems like google is just trying to punish Apple users for the inclusion of the auto reader.

If you know a way to turn it off, please tell me, I hate that terrible google feature.

TLDR; google AMP makes websites unbearable almost unusable.

    iMessage Features.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 01:15 PM PST

Am I the only one who things iMessage is lacking some very useful features in group messaging that other platforms are using?

    • Typing Notification (Bubble) like it currently has for normal iMessage conversation
    • Read Receipts for users in group
    • "@" feature to notify just one user and give them a mention. (Essintially a tag feature)

Those are just some features I can think of that I would like to see in iMessage group messaging that are currently missing. It may be dumb but I am sure there are features out there that iMessage is lacking that other users would be glad to have.

I figure it's just the glue or whatever inside has given up after four years of use. Might try to glue it back together tonight because the screen is still active and responsive.

Not ready to buy the S4 as much as I liked the S0.

Has anyone had a similar thing happen to them?

PSA: When you trade in 2 iPhones for a new iPhone, only on counts to the boosted trade in value. The other one will go for normal trade in.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 11:18 AM PST

There's ways around this that the apple employees will try to help you with, but just know that you could be out $100 of what you expected.

    2018 MacBook Air Defects?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:58 PM PST

We've tried two of the new 2018 MacBoom Airs, I'm wondering if our experience is unique or if others have experienced similar issues.

    • The battery life is not what we expected. Using nothing but Chrome and Word the battery seems to last only 4-5 hours. It seems the laptop battery should come closer to the advertised 8-10 hour 'all day' battery life. We exchanged the first laptop for a replacement even though Apple was unable to find any defects "just in case."

    • Now, the bottom of the laptop sometimes buckles and makes an audible clicking sound when we pick up the laptop on the right side. It seems like the laptop's housing should not buckle under normal use. We've had this laptop for less than a month.

Anyone else experience these things? I'm wondering if my expectations are unreasonable. Thanks!

Is anyone else frustrated by the lack of EQ controls built into the music app?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 05:31 AM PST

It makes no sense that I have to go into Settings > Music > EQ and change it there. Maybe it's just me, but this is something thats bugged me for years.

What is the replacement for the Time Capsule?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 07:49 PM PST

I've had a Time Capsule for several years now and it works seamlessly with all my iMacs and MacBook Pros. Since I have four computers connected I determined I needed to buy a second one because my 2TB wasn't enough backup space.

I went to go get one online today and to my horror I discovered I was severely behind the times and they discontinued the devices early last year. Wow is me. These worked perfectly.

It also appears Apple didn't decide to replace them either which is bad news for me because the ease of the Time Capsule just working was great. Replacing it with something that is going to be 3rd party and require setup is worrisome. It was pretty nice having the features already built into my macs to just know what the Time Capsule is and how to connect/backup. I'm worried I'm not going to get an all-in-one solution as easy to use.

What are the options you are using as a replacement? What are some product recommendations and resources to help set up a home WiFi environment and backup solution you use? Thanks.
