Note taking and iPad Air 1

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 10:42 AM PST

Hey all! So im headed back to school and what-have-you, and was looking into digital note-taking. I have my old iPad Air 1 and was wondering what stylus I should be looking at? From what I've seen neither Apple Pencil works, but I happened across the Adonit Pixel stylus which seems like it might be a perfect fit! However I'm unsure of compatability. If anyone could help me out with some reassurance/review that'd be stellar!

Ty for any replies in advance

Taking Notes with the iPad - Knowledge Retention

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 12:35 PM PST

I'm thinking about using the iPad Pro 12.9" to take notes for classes. I like the idea of having all my notes in one place as well as having them be searchable. My only hesitation is if there is a difference in knowledge retention with a tablet vs pencil and paper. I know there have been studies about how handwriting your notes is more beneficial then typing them up digitally, but I'm not sure about tablet vs paper. Has anyone who has taken notes with the iPad noticed any differences in how much you remember vs paper?

    iPad Games that Support 11”?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:39 AM PST

I'm having trouble finding iPad games that support the new size of the 11" iPad Pro (Really wish this was listed on the App Store!). Which games do you have that fit?

    • Rebel Inc

    • Kingdom Rush Vengeance

    • Civ 6

Got an iPad Pro 10.5" for my birthday - can anyone verify if I got a good deal on it?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:46 AM PST

My family tends to bring me to a place where I can buy my devices rather than surprise me. At best buy I was opting for the 2018 iPad, but they persuaded me to get the 10.5" and I even found a price match.

The iPad 64GB model was 499.99 + Tax with the pencil at msrp totaling around 650 out the door. Aside from building computers this is one of my first premium purchases and I don't quite know if I got a good deal on it.

As far as use goes I love it. Wanted the 12.9" Pro for over a year now, but since I purchased a drawing display at 16" the 10.5" is a lot more convenient.

How do i edit videos recorded on my iPad in the original aspect ratio/resolution?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 05:01 AM PST

Recorded 3 videos i'd like to merge together. iMovie only offers the max resolution of the video to 1080p, which adds black bars on the side.

    iPad Pro Charging

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 03:26 AM PST

    Hey guys!

Had my iPad Pro 12.9 Gen 3 (2018) since launch day and I am slightly perplexed by the charging behaviour of this iPad.

It only charges from 18W and up. I plugged in my 12W iPad charger with a USB-C cable and the battery did not charge (the charging symbol stated the same).

However, power is supplied to the iPad as the iPad boots up if I plug in the cable in when it is turned off.

Has anyone tried seeing if the iPad charges with anything other than the 18W charger if it is plugged in even though the battery charging symbol isn't on?

Are there any handwriting apps that allow inserting hyperlinks to websites?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 11:58 PM PST

I'd like to hand write notes on my iPad with the Apple pencil and I often want to add links to content online. Are there any apps that allow this? I don't think any of the big ones such as GoodNotes are able to.

iPad Pro video editing workflow with LumaFusion Abroad

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 03:12 PM PST

I posted a similar post on /r/gopro but I will be traveling abroad for a semester with a GoPro, G7X Mark II, and my iPad Pro 10.5. I have a 15" laptop but didn't want to bring since its bulky. Wondering others workflows and if this was possible? I wanted to create short little vlog time videos to publish to YouTube to capture all my experiences.

As for storage, I was thinking of getting wireless hard drive but they are a bit pricy for a college student, would Google Drive be good? Is that do able if I upgrade the storage they give you.. I will probably be shooting mostly in 1080 maybe 2.7K.

Generic iPad Pro 11” keyboard folio mini review

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 04:04 PM PST

I ordered this from Aliexpress and received it yesterday:

    https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/xnfLn8d

I got the navy version with the black keyboard and paid around $35 AUD for it (~$25 USD). I am writing this mini-review using the keyboard and case on a bed tray on the floor (https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/10289086/ - I recommend this for people looking for a cheap bed tray or very cheap coffee table). Please excuse any mistakes, I'm not in the most comfortable position although the folio is holding up fairly well.

    General comments:

    • The folio with the keyboard is bulkier than the official iPad Pro folio, and more difficult to attach and remove (but not overly so). The upshot of this is that it gves some protection to the corners (slightly cheap plastic, so beware of the corners snapping when attaching and removing). It also holds the Apple Pencil securely inside the part that folds over the case (protecting the camera as well, which I appreciate). They claim to put the iPad to sleep when closing, but I don't think it does it, or at least not well. The case material is thin plastic with the outer folio being faux leather, and should be hardy enough to weather normal conditions inside a bag, and slight drops.
    • The keyboard is full size. Thicker than the official one but still quite thin and light, and is removable from the folio. Connected easily by bluetooth and has an on/off switch, and a connect button. Charges using micro USB type B. Apparently lasts very long on a single charge. Apparently can connect to multiple devices, though I haven't tried.
    • The generic keyboard has more key travel than the official case. Another listing for the same item claimed to be using butterfly keys, and this does seem to be the case. I am no expert but the keys were responsive and registered key presses even when I pressed on the corners of the keys with the tip of my nail.
    • The keyboard attaches magnetically to the inside of the case, so it is easily adjustable, but it can still be a bit fiddly to arrange. To use it, you have to unfold the folio, shift the keyboard down, then prop up the iPad in one of the 3 grooves (only two of them are practically useful).
    • Has a function key row specifically for iOS functions, and shortcuts appear to work well.
    • The folio does not fold backwards, but with the keyboard removed it does not take up much more space than a regular folio or front cover would.
    • You can use it on your lap but it is not particularly comfortable (but I don't like having things on my lap in general).
    • During storage, the keyboard is held between the screen of the iPad and the front cover of the folio. It's snug and the keys are recessed such that they don't touch the screen, but I worry regardless about the possibility of scratching the screen and would have liked it if there were rubber feet on the corners of the keybaord to hold the plastic parts away from the iPad. I have a screen protector on the screen just in case, but I hate using a screen protector for my iPad.

Overall, I think it works fine, and is extremely cheap for what it provides. I'm still looking at the Brydge keyboard that is supposed to come out next year, but I think that this is geat value for what I got and I think I might keep using it even as more expensive options are released since I don't type every day. I feel that the official keyboard folio has some shortcomings that I'm not willing to put up with for the price, but the sheer cost effectiveness of this setup makes me overlook the issues I have with this keyboard and folio. Definitely great bang for the buck, and a great way to travel with the iPad while keeping everything tucked in a folio.

iPad Pro as a secondary monitor?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2018 10:58 PM PST

Hey all, I just got the large iPad Pro and I'd love to utilize it as a secondary monitor.

I've seen some options but all have mixed reviews.

Anyone doing this yet; any recommendations?
