installing OS into late 2006 macbook

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:05 AM PST

    hello everyone

so i have a late 2006 macbook, and its hdd died a couple years ago.

this was a computer i used mostly for entertainment, and because it was so old i didn't think it was worth fixing it, until now.

i bought a Crucial 120Gb BX500 SSD that i planned on installing into it, but i'm not sure how to go about installing the OS.

with the old HDD, the computer "clicks" repeatedly when i turn it on, and then shows me a flashing folder with a question mark on it.

When i install the new SSD, same thing happens but without the "clicking" noise - this is to be expected, the computer can't find anywhere to boot from, but i can't seem to be able to start internet recovery to install a new OS into it.

    I think i tried everything:

all the combinations to start internet recovery - none of them do anything at all

    cleared the NVRAM

there's no point in pressing the option key to search for places to boot from, because there aren't any, but when i do it with the old HDD in it just shows me the pointer in a grey screen

i did all these steps both with the old HDD and the new SSD

could anyone point me in the right directiong? i think it's worth noting that this is the only mac i have available at the moment, so i can't create a bootable media device from another mac.

i read some guides on how to do it from a windows PC, but the thing is, if i do it, will i be able to boot from it? the computer just doesn't respond to anything at all.

the computer has 2Gb of RAM, so i think it can run the Lion os.

i appreciate any help you can give me :)

Has anyone tried returning phone that’s been purchased with a trade in?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 02:42 PM PST

I recently bought a XR 64gb as a gift by trading in my iPhone 6 Plus for $200. My SO doesn't agree with the unnecessary spending while her iPhone 6s Plus is in good condition and wants me to return it. The box is unopened. Would I get back my old phone if I return the current one or would it be a gift card? If so will it be $200 or $100(this seems to be the trade in value if I trade in without buying a phone)?

What’s the charge for replacing missing pieces (screws) for a MacBook I disassembled?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:44 PM PST

I wasn't being very smart and I took apart my MacBook Pro, lost a few of the washers that go to the trackpad and a screw on the bottom frame. I know I'm stupid, but will AppleCare+ help? Will they fix it and what kinda $$$ am I looking at? I wouldn't be bothered except the trackpad is kinda uneven now and doesn't click quite right.

Late 2016 MBP airplay / HDMI audio issue

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 08:35 PM PST

Hi all, when I connect my laptop to my TV through the HDMI cable, or to my Apple TV through airplay, the audio is of very poor quality. It crackles and pops. Has anyone else had a similar issue? If so, did anything help fix this?

Can you remove photos off of icloud and onto your phone only?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 08:25 PM PST

Hello. I have a family member who is running low on space for her phone and keeps getting messages on her phone to that effect. Looking at her storage, the phone itself has a ton of free space, but the icloud is basically at capacity. I have been trying to find a way to basically move some photos off the icloud and onto the phone, to essentially split them 50/50 so there's space available on both. But for the life of me I cannot find any way to do this, or even if you can do this. I cannot seem to find a straight answer. I don't want to delete the photos off of everything, just even out the storage usage between the phone and the icloud. Can someone explain to me simply if this can be done and how to do it, and if not if there exist any workarounds or alternatives?

2017 13” MacBook Pro vs. 2 LG UltraFine 4K Displays

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 07:52 PM PST

    Howdy all!

So I've got a fun one for you. I currently have a non touch bar 13 inch MacBook Pro that I have been dying to get an external display for. My prayers were answered when I found a great deal for them. ($269 each)

Here's the question, will my machine be able to drive both of those displays at the same time? If so, I understand that I will need to connect it to both ports on the MacBook.

    Shortcuts help?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 07:11 PM PST

I have been trying to make a Shortcut that will check my battery level on its own and send an alert that will notify me even if I am not currently looking at/ using my phone. Is it even possible to get the shortcut to constantly run a battery check? Because as close as I got was it checking when I pressed it but thats useless since I could just look in the corner.

iMac won't read DVDs (but does read CDs)

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 07:06 PM PST

I have a mid-2010 iMac running High Sierra. For some reason the built-in DVD drive won't read any DVD. It tries to spin-up and then after about 10 seconds ejects the disk. However, it seems to read CDs just fine. Any ideas?

FYI several years back I added an internal SSD to the iMac. I suppose it is possible I messed something up there but I don't recall if the problem existed before the SSD was added or not. The fact that it reads CDs though would seem to indicate that the cables are all connected I would think. I am not sure I want to open the iMac again unless you think it might be helpful.

    MacBook Pro Issues

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 06:52 PM PST

My brother has a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro and has been having issues the last two days. I know its an old Mac, but unlike me, as long as it works he doesn't care about having the latest device. The last two days, sometimes when he starts it, it beeps a couple times, then other times it starts normally. It also restarts from time to time while he is using it and occasionally green lines/bars show up on the screen. I'm most likely going to buy him a new one, but I was wondering if there is any solution to the issues he is currently having?

    My iMac i5 2015 27" has insane edge-pixel bleeding - Why?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 06:43 PM PST

As the title says, its particularly noticable in lock screen because I have a plain background - whatever was under the screen was burnt into it (ie. the internet browser etc). But note that it does eventually go away, or at least shift to show newer windows underneath, making me think it's not permanent.

This is about 1" from the edge, sometimes up to 2", all the way round and has been getting worse each time this year.

Any thoughts on this? It seems functionally fine otherwise.

Got a new iPad, synced to iCloud, lost password remembering function on phone.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 06:42 PM PST

So I have a MacBook and iPhone X on one iCloud account. I just got an iPad for Christmas and synced it to my iCloud also. Password remembering function wasn't working on iPad at first but somehow I managed to make it work. It still works on my computer but now my phone doesn't remember passwords and the key isn't popping up either.

I checked and keychain is turned on, on all the devices. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Thanks!

MacBook only playing certain things through Bluetooth headphones

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 06:34 PM PST

Hello! I own a MacBook Pro retina 13" 2015 running 10.14. My issue is: When I connect bluetooth devices (I have tested with my AirPods and with Bose QC35s), most programs will still play their audio through the speakers of the MacBook. For some reason iTunes uses the headphones for output, but if I try Spotify, Logic Pro, Safari etc. they will use the built in speakers. I have verified that the headphones are selected as the output under System Preferences, and in the case of Logic Pro I have specifically tried forcing it to output to the headphones but no dice. Anyone who might have an idea as to why it is doing this would be greatly appreciated :)

    Apple Watch Battery Question

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 06:27 PM PST

I just received an Apple Watch Series 4 for Christmas yesterday- these past 2 nights my battery has been at 70% when I go to charge it at night, so I was just wondering if it will damage my battery if I charge it overnight when the battery is still at such a high percentage or should I wait for it to get lower? (The past two days I have had little to low use of the watch due to the holidays so I'm not expecting this to be a daily dilemma).

Iphone 8 keeps crashing when opening any app from App Store

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 06:13 PM PST

Hello, I have a brand new Iphone 8 and every time I try to open an App the phone just crashes then restarts. I have done everything from restoring phone as new. Erasing all content and resetting the phone. Apple support is just useless telling me the same thing, on one instance I had over 45 Panic-full logs on the analytics log. iOS being used is 12.1.2.

Handwritten Notes to Text iPad Pro

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 04:14 AM PST

So, I'm considering getting a iPad Pro but I'm currently on the fence seeing as because it runs iOS, it's really just a large iPhone without the phone... but then I was wondering if with the pencil I could potentially take hand written notes that I take when I'm out of my office and convert them to text. This would save me the hassle of having to type up my hand written notes for reports.

So my question is, is there an app that allows you to convert hand written notes made with the Apple Pencil and convert it to text?

Managing a non-iPod mp3 player from my Macbook.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 02:22 PM PST

Can anyone provide some insight on how I can manage the playlist for a third party mp3 player using my MacBook pro?

I received a Dansrue mp3 player and can easily copy music to it. But I'd like the option to create and alter playlists. I'd like to avoid bootcamp and windows.

I'd get an iPod shuffle, but I'd rather not expose an ~$200 mp3 player to the abuse and environment this unit will experience.

Issues with Apple Pencil when iPad is charging.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 02:19 PM PST

Hi guys, first time posting here but I can't seem to find a work around this issue. I use my iPad pro 12.5 for digital art, and I can maybe get a few hours out of it using the program I use/recording for speedpaints with it unplugged.

If I plug it in to charge as I use it, trying to draw a straight line with the pencil is...challenging. It skips around, making multiple strokes for one line. It really is impossible to use when the iPad is charging. Is there a fix for this? It really makes long hours of art binging difficult when I have to stop to charge my iPad.

    Thanks for your help!

    Cannot find ipod_control folder

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 05:53 PM PST

    Hi all,

I cannot seem to find the iPod_control folder in internal storage after unhinding hidden folders and unticking hide protected operating system files. I've also gone into regedit and changed HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden to group, however the file still isn't showing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Macbook air, touchpad won't work once logged in.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2018 01:35 PM PST

    Reset pram

    Reset smc

    Battery is unplugged

    Drive removed

Tried 2 different drives, 1 from the m.2 and 1 through USB

Tried el capitan, Sierra and high Sierra

Tried a fresh install on a brand new sata drive, through USB, using Apple's internet recovery.

So, what happens is outside of the desktop, whether it's at the boot menu, the recovery menu, disk utility, or login screen, the touchpad works just fine, but if I log into osx, it immediately stops working and is in the top left of the screen and the click still works. If I plug in an external mouse, that external mouse will work for about 5 minutes before it stops working. I am going to try linux and windows next, but was curious if anyone had ever seen anything this crazy?
