Is there a way to determine the "mileage" of an iOS device? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:25 PM PST I'm getting an iPad Pro - open box (good price), the store claims that the box is open but the device wasn't used. Not a demo device, a device a customer returned the day after. Is there a way to confirm this in device? Usage hours? Battery cycle counter? Some counter that can't be reset? Anything? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 09:27 PM PST Apologies if this question is vague, but I'm asking for a friend who has a mild phobia of dealing with computer issues, and I'm not very good at helping her because I've never used Apple products. However, a network problem cropped up for her that has me concerned. If someone here could give us some advice it would be much appreciated. She connects to the internet by physically tethering her iPhone to her 2013 MacBook Pro. From what I gathered in talking to her, there is apparently some network in the area that she was connecting to automatically upon booting up each morning. She would have to disconnect from it and then connect to her phone. This has been happening for a couple years (I was unaware) so I told her that she really shouldn't connect to an unsecured, unknown network and should set up her network manager (or whatever it is called in OS X) such that it doesn't do so automatically. She said she did - and that's when she started having other connection problems, like not being able to connect at all for a time. From my understanding, the unknown network is no longer being listed as something she can connect to, but neither of us know how to prevent it from happening again, if she should consider her privacy compromised or what to do about it if so. And I don't know what to tell her. After deleting the network, she wasn't able to connect to the net at all, even via tethering her phone. That's when she asked for my help. I didn't do anything aside from try to get her to a network troubleshooting wizard, but somewhere in the process, she was able to connect with her phone, which is where we're at now. I'm a little concerned about the fact that she was connecting to a strange, unsecured network every day, even more so because she has been infected with malware in the recent past. She is also now repeatedly getting a pop-up (from the OS, not her browser) that is blank - no content, just an empty grey window but is titled Join "NETGEAR_EXT". "NETGEAR" was also the name of the unknown network she had been connecting to (yes, I know that's a company that produces routers). Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? If that's way too broad, can anyone suggest a resource, even as just a starting place, for understanding and addressing these issues? Here are her basic specs: OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 MacBook Pro (Retina, 2013) 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Nov 2018 09:22 PM PST So I did my laundry and found my EarPods in the heap of clothes, and I plugged them in and did some tests on the quality. The left ear pod was fairly quieter and faint, compared to the right one, which had virtually no harm whatsoever. However, when I clicked on another test, I heard some sort of static in the left ear pod. I paused the audio, and still heard the static/crackling. I even unplugged them and still heard the crackling. Any help? EDIT: grammar [link] [comments] |
OSX 10.8.5 + Firefox = No Reddit! Nooooo! Posted: 19 Nov 2018 05:51 PM PST Ok, I've got a Macbook Pro, OS X 10.8.5, and it's no longer loading Reddit. I get about 30 posts, then it's blank. None of the drop down menus work, so i can't log out either. Firefox will no longer update due to my old version, and Safari won't display it properly either. Everything else is working fine. I never upgraded because i use the computer primarily for recording music and i didn't want to have to keep updating two programs, as it works exactly as i need it now. Is there a way to fix this in Firefox, or is there another browser i can use? Or am i just going to have to do real, healthier things instead of look at Reddit? (NOOOOO!) Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Why is my iPhone randomly asking for my Apple ID password? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 07:21 PM PST Recently my iPhone (iOS 12.1) will randomly ask me for my Apple ID password when I open an app. I can literally close the app and then open it a little while later and it asks for my password. It never used to do this and it's getting quite annoying. Did they change something that would cause this behavior in iOS 12.1? [link] [comments] |
Strange autocorrect? Being hacked? Keylogger? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:56 PM PST Hello, recently I've had some security issues. One of those issues was that a throwaway email got hacked. That didn't irk me too much but what did was that when I went to enter an email field on my iPhone 7, it came up in the suggestion for what email to use in a form despite never using it and never seeing it come up before, I had some other alarms so I system reset everything that I could. However, today I was typing and got some weird auto corrects to words that are strange and I don't use and they're not dictionary words (and it red underlines) but it still accepts it as if I've typed them multiple times but never have even once. Can this be a sign of an infection on my iDevices still occurring? I've also had keyboard issues where I simply can't type without hitting a key multiple times on my iMac. Thanks so much. Posted: 19 Nov 2018 06:52 PM PST I was going to backup my iPhone 6s on my PC, but I wanted to update iTunes to the current version (12.9, currently at 12.8). However, I click the update button and nothing happens. Is it safe to back up my iPhone via iTunes without having the current version? I'm worried it will either wipe my phone or update it to a newer iOS before I can back it up. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to group 2 songs together when shuffling iTunes, iOS? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 06:49 PM PST When I'm in my car I always shuffle my entire music library from my iPhone. I would like to link certain tracks together so that whenever one of them plays in the shuffle, the next song will be the one that "belongs" after that song. We'll use Queen's We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions as an example. They always play those two songs on the radio together and it just seems unnatural to have them torn apart while shuffling. Thanks in advance for any insight. EDIT: I'm specifically using Windows 10 64-Bit with iTunes version 12.9.1.4 and an iPhone 8 Plus with iOS 12.1 EDIT 2: I know that I could just re-encode the two songs together, but I'm using ALAC instead of MP3 to preserve my CDs completely and I don't want to alter the track separations. If there isn't a way to do this within iTunes then I'll just do without the feature until hopefully they add it in the future :) [link] [comments] |

Macbook Pro freezing repeatedly, having start up issues. Posted: 19 Nov 2018 06:12 AM PST At random, my macbook has been hard freezing (no beachball/load) and shutting down after about ten seconds. This is also seems to happen frequently when waking from sleep mode. When starting it up again, sometimes it will boot much slower than usual, and not do anything after the progress bar fills completely. I'm on a 13-inch mid 2012 model, using Mojave. Issues with External Display on MacBook Air Posted: 19 Nov 2018 07:40 PM PST SORRY FOR THE WALL OF TEXT Backstory: I broke the screen on my 2015 MacBook Air some time ago and instead of repairing the screen, I just attached a spare monitor to it for the time being. The monitor is nothing fancy, but did the trick. I'm connecting my Air via mini-DP to HDMI with some random 3rd party adapter from Amazon. It has been functioning just fine for about a year. Usage: I just started a new job and to supplement my issued workstation, I brought in my Air and external monitor. I asked management if there was a chance of getting a second monitor for my issued workstation (as most other employees have one) and he agreed. When they arrived, he actually gave me two brand new HP 24ea monitors to use. Now, the monitors aren't anything to get excited about, but they have a great picture for the price and I'm just happy for the free workstation upgrades. I decided that since I do so much work on my docked Air, that I'm going to use one monitor for my WIN10 workstation and one for my Air (I'd love to dual screen the air, but that's outside its capabilities). Problem: With the display hooked up to the Air, it seemingly switches settings for no reason and dims the entire screen. If I'm continuosly using the computer it seems to put the issue at bay, but that's not even a guarantee either sometimes. I have two of the same brand new monitors, I've tried both monitors on different computers (both worked flawlessly), I've tried both monitors on the Air (both had the dimming flaw), and I've tried to mess around with the monitor's menu settings. At the moment the only thing I can't change is the video cable from the Air to the monitor as it's the only one I have, but it worked fine with my original personal monitor. What's also weird is that if I go into the monitor's settings and factory reset it, it goes right back to being a bright and clear picture. Then given a bit of time, it goes right back to a dimmed image. I'm willing to buy a mini-DP to VGA or maybe I just need to buy a better mini-DP to HDMI, but the real puzzling thing for me in all of this is the fact that I can temporarily fix the issue by just factory resetting the monitor. I feel like if it was a cabling/hardware issue, no amount of monitor settings should be able to correct it. Or the fact that if I'm using the computer to work, it delays the dimming. Any thoughts? How do I update the Messages app on my Macbook Pro to use Tapback and other new features? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 07:34 PM PST Hi all, I'm using a Macbook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with El Capitan version 10.11.6, yet my Messages app has stayed pretty much exactly the same since probably two years ago (i.e. all tapbacks reactions are spelled out, looks dated, etc.). Earlier today, I saw someone else's app was able to use the tapback bubbles and other features, so I was wondering if there was a way in which I could update my Messages app to use those features too. I'm fairly good with computers, but this one thing is bugging me and I can't figure it out. Just looked and saw that I'm running Messages version 9.2. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

I want to return my iPhone XS. What is the best way to go about this? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 06:55 PM PST After being an android user for several years, I decided to give the XS a try. With the exception of a better screen and camera, there is barely a noticeable difference between the XS and my old galaxy s7. Nonetheless, it is still a better device. The dealbreakers for me are: The battery losing 3% health over the course of about 35 days. (I use my phone for about 4 hours a day, most of which is listening to music and browsing Reddit.) The included lightning apple airbuds or my bose wired earbuds will stop playing audio while connected and the only way to fix this is unplug and plug again. Sometimes after pausing a song will play through the phone speakers even though earbuds are connected. Replugging also fixes this issue. Finally, sometimes the phone just crashes (usually while browsing Reddit). My greatest concern with attempting a return is that I have very little proof of any of these things happening. They only occur 1 or 2 times over the course of a day. I would prefer not to have to sell my device. Am I obsessing over minute details? Does Apple have software updates lined up to fix my woes? Do iPhone 8 users experience these same issues? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Nov 2018 12:12 PM PST A user is trying to rename attachments when saving them from outlook 365. The save as dialog has the file extension in the rename box, if the user deletes the name+extension and renames the file it is saved as a file without an extension. In finder the "Hide Extension" option is checked. Running a 2018 Macbook Pro using Mojave and the latest version of office 365. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to create a full backup of my hdd using dd? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 06:04 PM PST i'm not super familiar with the dd utility, but my understanding is that if I use dd to copy my entire drive to an external disk I can restore that same disk (with partitions and everything) using that disk image. is this correct? can I also mount said image to browse and retrieve files from it? my situation is that I want to move over to linux, but I'm not sure if I will stay there so I'd like to have an option to easily restore my system to the way it is now. my understanding is that dd would copy bit-for-bit it with a single command and restore it with another. is this accurate? Google Maps sending street view rather than map when sharing location in Messages Posted: 19 Nov 2018 05:48 PM PST Not sure when or why this changed. It used to send the map view that popped up in the Messages GM app, and it still shows the map in the preview, but it changes to showing street view when the message is sent. Did I miss a setting "update" somewhere with iOS 12.1? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Found my old Apple iPhone 3. How can I resurrect it? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 05:33 PM PST I found my old iPhone 3. It starts up and, when plugging it into iTunes, iTunes tells me it cannot connect until it is unlocked using the passcode. The phone itself tells em "waiting for activation". I cannot access the passcode on it, only dial 911. Is there a way to get this thing working so I can play around with it a bit? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Macbook Pro startup issues after failed Mojave Update Posted: 19 Nov 2018 05:17 PM PST I attempted to update to Mojave the other day, but encountered an error where I had no options to select from when prompted to choose a startup disk. I restarted my computer to try and back out of the update, but it didn't help. Now, I'm having startup problems on two different fronts. If I try to try to startup normally, I get as far as putting in my password before getting an error that says "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." If I startup into macOS Utilities and try to a clean Reinstall of OS X, I always end with an error that says "Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X". Any ideas of what to try? Is there a way to reinstall OS X from a flash drive or something, to avoid having to download the "additional components"? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Nov 2018 07:28 AM PST This isn't just isolated to Netflix and opening credits. The AMC app will switch audio to the television during advertisements, and will get stuck there and I have to reselect my HomePod for audio to play there. I think this only started happening after airplay 2 came out. I've power cycled my HomePod, erased and set my HomePod up as new, changed its name, changed the network name. Reset settings with my Apple TV restarted my Apple TV multiple times. Does this happen for anyone else? [link] [comments] |
