Facebook is doing something fishy with the Messenger app

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:33 AM PST

Recently I've noticed that even when the Messenger app has been closed and the phone locked - it still produces sounds. For example, I text someone, close the app, lock the phone and continue the conversation on my Mac. Then if I send a heart emoji it produces that annoying bubbly sound - it can be heard from my phone's speakers. It's not just that heart emoji sound - the sound for "seen" can also be heard from the speakers. And yes, I've disabled Background App Refresh for both Facebook and Messenger apps. I've also recently wiped the phone and "reinstalled" iOS and the issue still occurs, so it's not related to a bug in iOS. IMO, Facebook is doing something fishy again with the apps. It makes no sense to continue hearing app sounds when it's closed, BAR is disabled and the phone is locked. This isn't a video/audio player app. And the issue is really annoying!

Also I know that a lot of people keep their phones on silent and might not even notice this. Anybody else with the same issue?

Which iPhone has been Apple's best release yet?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:05 PM PST

So a little context. Obviously, each iPhone Apple releases is their 'best release'. However, what I'm asking is; what iPhone has stood the test of time? When you look back at all of the launches, which one still makes an impact today? Which iPhone innovated the most?

In my opinion, it's the iPhone 5S. Not only did it have probably the best iPhone design to date, but it definitely shaped what the iPhone is today. The introduction of biometrics with Touch ID was an industry first and changed the way we unlock and use our phones as a whole. It also led the way for Apple Pay and Face ID today. The introduction of the A7 chip with its 64-bit architecture also unlocked a whole new world of power for iOS. Without it, we wouldn't have devices like the iPad beating Macbooks in benchmarks. And finally, the 5S's camera made huge leaps and definitely cemented Apple as one of the great smartphone camera manufactures. Coming back to design, it's clear that Apple also agreed that it was great. Apple only abandoned the iPhone 5 series design this year when they discontinued the SE. That's 6 years of selling the same design language, so clearly, Apple saw its greatness. Overall, the iPhone 5S is definitely one of Apple's greatest releases. I loved my time with that phone, and I hope we see something of its caliber in the future.

    What are your thoughts?

Miss "Free app of the week" so much! You?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:04 PM PST

It was so nice to discover something every week that usually cost some $... Was really nice move from Apple. Then they just got greedy I guess and decided it's too much to giveaway and dropped it. They could at least change it to "Free app of the month". Still would be nice from them.

New Mac mini users with a 4k/5k display, how smoothly does it run with your workloads?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:01 AM PST

Without an eGPU, of course. I wonder if the performance remains buttery smooth or starts choking when you run some somewhat heavier stuff on a high-res display with intel's iGPU
