PSA: The iOS App Store is Back to Listing All In-App Purchases

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:05 PM PDT

I don't know if you guys remember our hullabaloo over Apple removing the list of IAPs from the App Stores a few days ago, but I wanted to pass along that the full lists of IAPs are back to properly showing up in the drop down list in the App Stores. yay

Here's an example list of a $5 game available for preorder that is riddled with micro-transactions.

The new mosquito emoji in iOS 12.1 seems to be missing a leg

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:04 AM PDT

The mosquito emoji seems to be missing its left-middle leg. Is this an error or a design choice?

There should be another leg in the middle, right?

How the hell do you reasonably choose between a Macbook Pro and an Air?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:59 PM PDT

The reveal of the new Air got me thinking about trying out the apple ecosystem for the first time, but upon digging into this lineup further Apple have crowded the same price point way too much and in doing so have created some really unconventional scenarios.

As an example, the 256GB 8GB Macbook Air with student pricing is £1,258.80; whereas the 256GB 8GB Macbook Pro is £1,304.40. There's an incredibly odd dynamic going on here where I can pay an extra £45 for a better processor, but lose out on Touch ID and the 3rd gen keyboard, or I stick with an air and get fairly significantly weaker CPU and integrated graphics, but gain Touch ID and the new keyboard (plus slightly longer battery life because of the underclocked CPU). Why is this decision even a thing when the price difference is $60 between the two models? There is no easy answer to this question and I find it incredibly odd that it even exists with a company like Apple, where the difference between a 'budget' and a 'pro' model is just $60 dollars, but the budget option has things the pro doesn't have and vice versa!

This is not necessarily a call for Apple to drop the price of the Air, but why create this dilemma in the first place?

Edit: For people asking about what I'd personally use the laptop for, the dilemma I have is that while the Air processor will handle most of the activity, there will be individual times where the power of the pro would be nice, but does that outstrip regular use of Touch ID, the better keyboard etc? Even with specifying my use case the decision is still hard.

The new iPad pro is the second thinnest Apple device ever released

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:53 AM PDT

Compared it to the rest of the lineup and the new iPad pro is even thinner than the iPod Touch 6th gen Here is a list i made :

    iPod Nano 7th gen - 5.4mm thick

    iPad pro 2018 - 5.9 mm

    iPod Touch 5/6th gen - 6.1 mm

    iPad Air 2 - 6.1 mm

    iPad Pro 10.5inch 2017 - 6.1 mm

So i cant wait to get my hands on it 😋

Usually, this year's A(n)X chips predict multi core performance gains for next year's A(n+1) iPhone chips, so the next iPhone might also score ~18000 in multi-core. What do you think?

Apple Should Make an Official First Party Controller

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:22 PM PDT

    For a few reasons:

    1. I'd be very interested to see Apples take on good controller design
    2. If there was an official first party controller developers would include physical controls for every major iOS game and it would change gaming on iOS/iPad
    3. It could have its own w series chip that gave it seamless pairing

They really showed the potential of the iPad pro as a gaming device with the demo of NBA 2k yesterday, if they made an official wireless controller with the same level of care as AirPods and the Apple pencil I think it would be a game changer

The irony of touch interaction on the iPad Pro

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:11 AM PDT

Apple has historically claimed that touch is a bad idea for laptops because nobody wants to do touch on a vertical surface. Yet, Apple provides no horizontal input options (trackpad, mouse) for interacting with the UI when the iPad is docked with its keyboard.

I personally think that if Apple wants the iPad Pro to be seriously considered for creative workflows they need to provide a cursor based input (this would be trivial to implement) option based on any number of horizontal input options like trackpad or mouse.

iOS also needs a real file system (Files isn't there yet) but that's another story.

The iPhone SE is an excellent phone

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 07:32 AM PDT

I have used most iPhone models over the years, beginning with the original iPhone back in the day. My newest was an iPhone 7, which apart from the lack of headphone jack I really liked as well. However, recently I switched back to an iPhone SE and I gotta say, it is now my main phone again. So much so that I do not miss my newer 7 at all.

The SE's form factor is amazing, the size is just fine for me, and it is very fast. In fact it has everything I need in a phone. I know a lot of people who would still buy this form factor, not offering it any longer seems like a mistake to me. It is, in my view, one of the best iPhones that has ever been produced. I am convinced that a low-cost SE would be a popular option and satisfy a lot of people, perhaps especially those who love to use smaller devices, and those who are not much interested in $1k phone prices. So, what is your personal opinion on the SE? Fellow SE enthusiasts: cheers! say hello :)

It established and broadened the idea of automatic device sync, and I don't think people give it the credit it deserves. Steve Jobs explains it really well in his very last keynote at WWDC 2011. It's worth a watch!

    Comparison: 2018 MacBook Air (13-inch, 256 GB, $1400) vs 2018 MacBook Pro (13-inch, 256 GB, $1800)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:31 AM PDT

Only the MacBook Air offers 128 GB of storage for a $200 discount, but I wanted to compare the models with the same 256 GB of storage.

Here is everything about the two computers that is actually different:

    Price

    Air: $1400 (winner)

    Pro: $1800

    Weight

    Air: 2.75 pounds (winner)

    Pro: 3.02 pounds

    Colors

Air: Gold color available (winner... I guess)

    Pro: Gold color not available

    Battery

    Air: 12 hours (winner)

    Pro: 10 hours

    Display

Air: 300 nits brightness, standard color

Pro: 500 nits brightness, wide color gamut (P3) (winner)

    True Tone

Air: Not equipped with True Tone

Pro: Equipped with True Tone (winner)

    Processor

    Air: 8th Gen 1.6-GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 2 cores, 7W TDB

    Pro: 8th Gen 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 4 cores, 28W TDB (winner)

    Graphics

    Air: Intel UHD Graphics 617

Pro: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 (winner)

    Bluetooth

    Air: Bluetooth 4.2

    Pro: Bluetooth 5.0 (winner)

    Ports

    Air: 2 Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports

    Pro: 4 Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports (winner)

    Function Row

    Air: Physical function keys

    Pro: Touch Bar

    Summary

    • The main advantages of the MacBook Air are saving $400 and having 2 extra hours of battery life.

    • The main advantages of the MacBook Pro are additional power under the hood, 2 additional Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, and True Tone.

    • What is up for debate is whether the physical function keys or the touch bar are more desirable.

    My Opinion

    • I would recommend the MacBook Air to the vast majority of people because the $400 and the 2 extra hours of battery life are what will matter most for them. Additionally, most people will appreciate the simplicity of having the physical function keys instead of the Touch Bar.

    • On the physical function keys vs Touch Bar question: If you can't be bothered to learn about how to use the application BetterTouchTool then the physical function keys are more desirable. However, if you are willing to take some time to learn about how you can use BetterTouchTool then the Touch Bar is more desirable than the physical function keys.

    • Most people will overlook it, but I absolutely love having True Tone on a MacBook. It's far more useful to me than having True Tone on an iPhone because of the size of the screen and the fact that a MacBook is a machine that will often be used for many hours at a time. I find that it makes long sessions on the computer far easier on my eyes. I view this as a significant point in favor in the MacBook Pro, but not everyone will agree.

    • There will be some people who find that the better display, True Tone display feature, Touch Bar (with BetterTouchTool customization), 2 extra ports, Bluetooth 5.0, and more power under the hood is worth paying an additional $400 while losing 2 hours of battery life.

Which model is more desirable to you? And if neither appeals to you, what changes are you hoping to see from Apple in future MacBooks?
