One year in with my iPhone X

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:28 AM PDT

I've pretty much had my iPhone X since launch day, a little over a year with it, I see no need to upgrade. It's still very responsive (running iOS12) battery life isn't bad, definitely not what it was, but I don't feel tethered to an outlet. I've never had a phone I felt compelled to keep like I do to this phone. The XS, Max and Xr don't seem like an upgrade for the first time since I've had an iPhone. (I've had one since the 4) I still genuinely love this phone. Any of my iPhone X users feel the same?

iPhone 6S+ to XR: 72-hour review

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:16 AM PDT

Just wanted to share some thoughts after using the XR for 3 days. I use my phone heavily for business & personal use. I upgraded from my trusty 6S Plus which served me well and is still working fine; I hesitated on upgrading earlier since the features didn't seem to be significantly better for the higher price and I didn't want to lose the headphone jack. I finally convinced myself that the XR has enough new features and low enough price to justify the upgrade (and losing the headphone jack). Side note: I've got a car with only 3.5mm aux audio (no fancy Bluetooth or CarPlay) so I liked having the headphone jack. With the XR I am now using a bluetooth 3.5mm adapter from Amazon that works well, and the longer battery life of the phone offsets the extra battery consumption of bluetooth.

-First of all since everyone is hating on this, I honestly don't notice the lower resolution screen at all. If I hold it up to my eye and force my eye to focus that closely then I can see the lower quality text, but in normal usage I don't notice any difference. What I can notice is that the XR screen is much brighter than the 6S+ screen.

-FaceID is incredible, absolute game-changer for me. I had 2 previous iPhones with TouchID and it was never reliable. I was constantly wiping off the sensor with my shirt to get it to work. I eventually stopped using it and just unlocked with a 4-digit passcode since that was always reliable. FaceID unlocks the phone before I can even swipe up on the screen, it is so fast. It makes the phone so much more usable in everyday use, it's the first time I've felt really excited about a new feature on my phone since probably Multi-Touch. I am actually using Apple Pay much more often since it's fast and reliable to unlock the phone at the register.

-The battery life is great. I had recently replaced the battery in my 6S+ and it was back to basically new duration, but the XR lasts significantly longer. I'm glad Apple finally put a bigger battery making the device thicker instead of trying to keep it as thin as possible.

-This is my first phone with "wireless" charging and it's very convenient. I've found myself using it much more often than I expected to. I got a $20 "Yootech" 7.5w fast charger on Amazon and it works great, pop the phone on there and it starts charging immediately and charges just as fast as the 5w wired brick (maybe faster). It's wonderful to not have to plug/unplug a cord every time I want to grab the phone and walk away, then return & continue charging. Also, it solves the issue of using headphones and charging the phone at the same time (without a double dongle).

-The speakers are a massive upgrade from the speaker on the 6S+. The stereo sound makes a big difference, much louder and higher quality audio. On the 6S+ if I was watching a video and was in a somewhat loud place, I would have to hold the speaker up to my ear to hear it on full volume. Not with the XR! I've been having to keep the volume around 50% in normal usage since it's so loud.

Overall I am very pleased with the XR. I never really used 3D Touch so it's not something I miss. Even if it was something I missed, I feel that the other new features definitely outweigh the loss of 3D Touch or reduction in screen resolution. It has made the iPhone much easier and less frustrating to use on a daily basis, and that is most important to me. The $50 upgrade to 128GB is also a great option on Apple's part. I almost regret not getting an iPhone X since I could have had these great features with that phone, but I'm glad I waited. The XR is the right price point for what you get, and doesn't have the extra features that I don't need (dual cameras, fancy OLED screen). The only thing I wish the XR had is the Gigabit LTE found on the XS and XS Max, but the standard LTE is already pretty fast.

iPhone X to iPhone XR mini review

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:24 AM PDT

Ok not so mini anymore but hope it helps. Summary at the bottom

I've seen the question pop up on here a lot and I thought I'd do a little review to help people decide what they want to do and answer a few questions.

First off I loved my iPhone X. The size was great, the oled screen was amazing but for most of the time I had it I got headaches and bad eye strain a lot of the time. Research on Google revealed that around 10% of people have had these same symptoms due to Pwm(pulse width modulation) which is the screen flickering but you can't see it. It's the way the screen technology works with brightness etc and at the time I never realised the phone was causing this which was a revelation. But I stuck with it because the phone cost £1000 until iOS 12 came along.

The iPhone X was always a beast but iOS 12 made it smooth as anything but with one nasty surprise. The battery life took a massive hit, it was terrible, from going to bed with 40% left on iOS 11 to now being on 5% and that's with managing how I used the phone all day not having the freedom to watch a video here and there in fear of using to much battery. To note the X was a replacement with 100% capacity.

Then comes along the iPhone xr. Cool colours, an Lcd screen that wouldn't cause me headaches and a massive battery claiming more than an 8 plus! I was half sold, I saw loads of YouTube videos about how bad the screen would be etc which put me off but then I thought apple wouldn't put one that was bad in a new phone so I took the plunge. Ordered a blue 64gb and with my work discount off I got it for £674 plus I arranged to recycle my x for £585 making the XR cost £89.

Launch day came and the parcel arrived and I opened it to find the following. This phone looks great, the blue colour looks very nice with the bright back glass that looks different in different lights and the blue aluminium sides which is a more subtle shade feeling great. I prefer the look and feel of the aluminium to the stainless steel and it will scratch a lot less also but bare in mind it is more slippery.

The XR is notably wider than the X and a little harder in one hand but not too much of a trouble but it feels a little weighty but also very solid and like the YouTube videos show is capable of taking a beating.

The Display, well the size is very nice in the sweet spot between X and XS Max but like many at first I was not happy with the wider bezels. At this point I still had my X in hand and the bezels were big at the side of those and although the screen looked great it lacked that pop of the X. But in no way does it look pixelated or cheap. I have great eyesight and I can't see any jagged text unless I put the phone 5 inches from my face and that's still a struggle and who does that? It's bright and clear and impressive. You don't get the deep blacks like the Oled and it doesn't quite pop as much but I knew this going in and expected it but still wasn't sure.

But I made a decision and I posted the X to be recycled and got my cash sent the next day and immediately wondered if I'd made the right move.

3 days after that I no longer have this feeling. The bezels have shrunk as I have nothing to compare it to now. The screen is awesome, bright, colourful and clear. It's great to type on a bigger keyboard. Photos look amazing to view on etc it's great.

(I must point out while some apps are great a lot need updating to support the bigger screen and some look bad with blurry text etc but will be fine with an update from the apps developers)

I love the colour of this phone and the size. Blue is great at hiding finger prints btw.

The camera is amazing! I thought the X was good but this is amazing and I've taken some portrait mode photos today and they look very very good and the wide lens does a great job of capturing detail and giving a great background blur with smooth edges. I don't really miss the zoom of the 2nd lens and their is a third party app that works with portrait mode and pets so I'm sure apple will add this feature later on via an update. The video camera is fantastic as you'd expect.

I didn't use 3D Touch much before and I don't miss it now I'm used to not having it but to you it may be an issue? Also you can still use the trackpad cursor and lock screen buttons with a press and hold with haptic feedback.

The battery, my lord what a difference. On iOS 11 on the X I went to bed with 30% left using the phone quite hard apart from video playback, I watched some YouTube but was always conscious about the battery getting low but apart from video I could get through a solid day with 30-40% to spare. On iOS 12 it made it about 5% to spare or needing a top up and also being careful what I used the phone for just in case it used too much.

The iPhone Xr is a revelation. I can watch YouTube all I want and use this phone without thought, without managing what I do to save juice and it just keeps going. Most days I go to bed on the same type of day with 50% left. Yesterday I went to London and used it a fair bit, social media, took some photos etc and went to bed with 65% left. Even the heaviest of users will see great returns on battery life with this phone. You don't have to worry about this on the XR. Just to note I don't have auto brightness on background app refresh on or location on unless I need it for nav etc.

So from all those thinking about switching from an X for any reason at all this is just my opinion and a guide to my experience.

The screen is not as good- but it's also great and and not low quality at all.

The phone has bigger bezels but after a day with no side by side you won't notice or care.

The phone is bigger but you get used to it fast and it's not too big a jump.

    The colours are fantastic

I prefer the look, feel and scratch resistance of aluminium over the X stainless steel.

Battery life is much much better, you can throw anything at it and you've still got some in reserve.

The X is a fantastic phone, but it no longer worked for me for the reasons listed and the XR is a fantastic replacement and I'm very happy.

Hope this helps anyone on the fence.

Upgraded to XS Max, really miss convenience of Touch ID

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:17 PM PDT

    Hi all.

I recently upgraded to a XS Max from an iPhone 7 and want to share my experience adjusting to the new iPhone. I was a unsure the size would work for me but after a week of use, now I don't notice the size; in fact, the iPhone 7 feels too small. The screen real estate is so good.

The only thing that's really bothering me is the lack of Touch ID. I don't have an issue with Face ID, it works fine, but I miss Touch ID because it worked without having to actually look at the phone.

    Three specific examples:

    1) I have soft token apps for work (RSA, Mi-Token, etc). When I need to use them, I used to be able to just reach over to my iPhone, rest a finger on the Home button, tap the token app and glance at the iPhone to get the code. I didn't need to look away from my computer until the app was open on the iPhone, so no loss of focus on my work, it was all very seamless and really easy. But now with Face ID I have to either pick up the iPhone and point it towards me, or move my head over to it. This really pulls me out of my zone, it's distracting, and requires more effort.

    2) Using Face ID for Apply Pay is annoying. With Touch ID it was so much easier: get to the checkout, as I'm pulling my iPhone out of my pocket, rest a finger on the Home button to double-click it, it reads the finger print, I tap the phone on the reader and all done. I didn't have to break eye contact with the checkout chick, could keep putting my moves on her. But now with Face ID there's an awkward moment where I pull my iPhone out, hold the phone with two hands to double-press the Power button, then hold it towards my face to get Face ID to work before tapping the phone on the reader.

    3) Using your mobile phone while driving is illegal in Australia. Like a lot of people, I use my iPhone to play music in the car via Bluetooth, and to change plylists I have to actually use iTunes. With Touch ID, it was really easy to do the sneaky and have my phone in my lap, unlock it with Touch ID, tap the iTunes app, and start scrolling for the playlist - all out of my peripheral vision. Not so much with Face ID, now I have to raise the phone up to get a good view of my face which definitely requires more attention.

This is absolutely a First World Problem and I'm sure I'll adapt in the long-term. I'm at a point in my life where devices should integrate seamlessly into my life, they shouldn't add any kind of burden, and for optimal usability, I shouldn't have to change too much to use them. Face ID doesn't do this for me - it constantly requires me to divert my attention to the iPhone. A 4-digit passcode would be more seamless but that's just heresy. I can only hope Apple find some way to bring Touch ID back without a Home button.

    Cheers.

Edit: why is this downvoted? At least comment why you're downvoting.

Is it possible to transfer phone number from physical SIM to eSIM?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:34 AM PDT

Perhaps this is dependent on the carrier, but is it possible to have a phone number ported from a physical SIM card to an eSIM? Or can you only sign up for a new service line with eSIM? I'm asking because it would be cool if I could transfer my work phone's number to an eSIM and use it on my iPhone XS.

Does the XR have the better camera over the X?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:44 AM PDT

Still undecided... I can get a 128 GB XR for a good price. For a 64 GB X I would have to pay 30€ more (Both new). I feel like the better camera and battery size of the XR could make up for the worse display. What do you think? How does the front and back camera of the XR compare to the X?

iPhone XR "Scaling" Difference - 8+/XS

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:01 AM PDT

    Hi folks.

Yesterday I received my iPhone XR and compared the screen to my 8+ and gf's XS.

It seems that some Apps definitely look extremely blurred while others are just fine. Also the whole font size looks smaller compared to the other devices.

for example: Instagram text is smaller but okay, Reddit text is the same size but blurred af, same for YouTube, iMessage text is smaller but fine, ...

So I was wondering if this differences occurs due the fact that it displays content like an XS Max/Plus device but the screen is slightly smaller or if the whole UI needs to be upgraded (same for Apps).

Setting a bigger font size actually doesn't work, because the text get's even more aliasing artifacts.

Besides the difference in text quality, which somehow depends on used Apps, I really like the screen. The colors seem way more accurate than on the 8+ compared to my calibrated screen for picture editing. Also viewing photos isn't any downgrade from the 8+ ... It's just the App stuff which bugs me.

Any idea if this will be fixed or updated?
