    Where are all the good real games, not all these free phone style modern games?

    I grew up with consoles, I have an iPhone X. Ive been trying games out and they are all either free to play or quasi-mmo games. Where are the games that once you buy it you have it all, with stories that you play offline whenever you want, that don't require dozens of hours or mindless grinding. I really want something like ps1 era final fantasy games (7-9 or 10 which was awesome) but the only games I've found are indies or rockstar games I played as a kid. It's so frustrating, I feel like games just aren't made for me anymore.

    Deadspace

    I fired it up on my iPad 2 this morning and it still works ok. Was a little laggy during the first cut scene/intro but fine during gameplay.

    Does anyone know if it'll work with a Steelseries Nimbus? Should be getting one next week.

    [Discussion] N.O.V.A Legacy - a long-time fan's opinions, and how I would change it

    Background

    First, let me start this post off by saying that I love Gameloft's N.O.V.A series. I don't often have the time to sit down and play console games, and I'm on the go a lot, so for the most part, I have to rely on my phone for entertainment. And for the longest time, the N.O.V.A series has filled that role amazingly well. I remember the original N.O.V.A game shaking up the App Store in December 2009, in an era where the only iOS games were Doodle Jump and Angry Birds. It had graphics that were unrivaled at the time, relatively fun and action-packed gameplay, and a decent (if somewhat derivative) story. The multiplayer was a simple four-player free-for-all, with no progression or unlocks at all. It was barebones by today's standards, but still fun.

    N.O.V.A 2, released in 2010, brought nothing but improvements upon improvements to an already great game. The graphics were improved, new weapons, enemies and abilities were added, enemy AI was improved, and the plot was driven forwards, introducing a new alien race called the Volterites. While N.O.V.A 2 brought modest but still notable improvements to the graphics, gameplay and story of its predecessor, the main area of improvement was the multiplayer. A massive leap forward from the original game, N.O.V.A 2 brought us 10-player matches with new gamemodes such as Capture The Flag, Team Deathmatch, InstaGib, etc. We got new maps, and also revamped versions of old fan-favorite maps (Jungle, anyone?)!

    In addition to these amazing changes and additions, N.O.V.A 2 also brought a multiplayer progression system based on levels, to incentivize time investments on one account. You gained experience points from killing enemies, and as you gained more experience, your character leveled up. Leveling up granted you the ability to unlock new weapons and perks. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO WAY TO PAY FOR EXPERIENCE; meaning, the only way to level up and unlock the cool guns was by honest multiplayer grinding, the hard way. Character level was the only restricting feature; once you were the right level, you automatically had all the weapons available to you. And if you were low-level, there were various weapon pickups across the map, so you wouldn't ever be at a severe disadvantage. There were also map packs you could buy with IAPs, but this did not affect gameplay and you could totally have fun without them. N.O.V.A 2 handled progression and IAPs perfectly in my opinion; the only way to unlock stuff was by playing the game, and the only IAPs gave you a handful of cool new maps.

    N.O.V.A 3, released in 2012, blew the first two games out of the water. The graphics were overhauled, and the game looks absolutely spectacular to this day; this is especially impressive considering the game is over six years old as of now. The particle effects, lighting, and shadows were done beautifully, and weapon/character sprites were incredibly detailed; for example, if you fired an assault rifle for a few seconds, small heat waves would rise from your barrel, which is a level of detail that I've seldom seen in mobile games. A flamethrower was added, though it's not very popular or powerful. The voice acting in N.O.V.A 3's campaign is stellar compared to the past two games, and I loved the cast (Rufus was awesome!). I especially liked Wardin's character development; by the end of the game, I felt like he was more of a human being, and less of a faceless war machine. N.O.V.A 3 also shook up its gameplay with sprinting, ADS, etc.

    N.O.V.A 3's Multiplayer was also a huge improvement over N.O.V.A 2's multiplayer, adding amazing new maps, new perks, kill signatures, killstreaks, jetpacks, and even PLAYER-DRIVABLE VEHICLES! Even to this day, there are very few FPS games on mobile that feature vehicles in multiplayer. Admittedly, there were a few things I wasn't a fan of. For one thing, N.O.V.A 3's MP introduced a currency system in addition to a leveling system; now, you had to earn credits as well as experience to unlock weapons. However, you earned both XP and credits from killing enemies, so this wasn't too intrusive, and credits aren't terribly hard to come by. I had most weapons and perks unlocked after just a couple of weeks of multiplayer. And once you had a weapon unlocked, you had it for good; there were no "upgrades", aside from up to two attachments that gave very minor boosts.

    The first three games had a few things in common; you couldn't "level up" a weapon, there were no "rarities", there were no energy bar system or timers, and there were absolutely no lootboxes. N.O.V.A 1-3 were all amazing, complete games that could be enjoyed without IAPs. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about N.O.V.A Legacy.

    N.O.V.A Legacy - artificially stifled progression, excessive monetization

    Being a huge fan of the original trilogy, I was pleasantly surprised to hear about Legacy; I knew that it was only a remaster of the original game, but I was excited to see how they would handle it given the latest hardware and software. I was especially excited to experience the first game again, because the game had lost support and hadn't been updated in years by that point. When Legacy launched on iOS in early 2018, I downloaded it as soon as I could; unfortunately, I was bitterly disappointed at what I saw.

    The graphics were a massive downgrade from N.O.V.A 2 and 3's, being dumbed down and much less detailed. I get that it's a remake of the original, but that's the point; remakes are supposed to give an old game amazing new graphics. Why didn't they just use N.O.V.A 3's engine to remaster it? Legacy barely looks better than the original 2009 game, and it's actually worse than the 2009 game in certain ways (lighting, particles and shadows are worse than N.O.V.A 1's). Also, there wasn't even any voice acting at all! At the very least, they couldn't even re-use N.O.V.A 1's recorded lines? And finally, the soundtrack only uses one generic, looping battle track for the entire game, whereas the original three had multiple different tracks that were actually decent to listen to. Sound effects were also pretty bland; certain guns used basically the same firing sound, like the Pistol and Assault Rifle.

    In addition to those problems, the actual gameplay is bland and repetitive. In the first three games, the campaign had vehicle/mech segments, turret stations, "jumping" obstacle courses, environment-based hazards (lava, shield-draining radiation, etc), and even some puzzles; there's absolutely none of that in Legacy, except for a handful of turret stations in the first few levels. Also, for some reason, Legacy removed the "Spider" enemies that were present in N.O.V.A 1, so there are literally only two enemy types in the entire game (four if you count automated drones in the beginning section, and variants of the brute enemies in the last few missions). Somehow, they even screwed up the final boss; in N1, the final boss was a flying UFO, but in Legacy, it's just a large version of the default brute-type enemy. They removed the ability to jump, they removed the "paralyze" ability from the first game, they even removed the shooting button in favor of an auto-shoot function (that can't be disabled), all of which severely dumb down the gameplay. In the campaign, you don't even have a constantly regenerating shield! You have to pay premium credits for a (one-mission use) power-up that heals you over time. If you die, you have to start the entire mission over, unless of course you pay for a revive or watch a 30-second ad video.

    Not only are the graphics and gameplay boring, but progression in both the campaign and multiplayer is suffocated by the ridiculous "upgrade" system. Upgrades basically give you a flat upgrade to a gun's basic stats; as you can imagine, having a maxed-out gun gives you a huge advantage over others. Unfortunately, the only way to upgrade a gun is through "cards"; you can only earn cards from lootboxes, which are extremely expensive. You generally don't earn many cards from a lootbox, and there's a low chance of actually pulling the cards you need. Additionally, the amount of cards needed to upgrade a gun increases exponentially with each level. Finally got enough cards to upgrade your gun? Good, now you have ANOTHER credit system to worry about! If you actually get enough cards to upgrade, you also need to pay a large sum of another in-game currency, which again is hard to come by. Oh, also, there are three different "rarities" for each type of weapon; again, a higher-rarity shotgun is pretty much a direct upgrade over a lower-rarity shotgun. The entire leveling/upgrade system makes multiplayer fundamentally unbalanced and frustrating. To add insult to injury, they reduced multiplayer to only 8 people maximum, and they removed several fan-favorite maps from the first game.

    The upgrade system plagues the campaign, too. The enemies in the campaign get exponentially harder with each level, so after a while it becomes pretty much impossible to progress without upgrading your guns. No, the AI doesn't get smarter or anything, the enemies simply gain huge amounts of extra damage and health, leading to a feeling of artificial difficulty.

    Oh, did I mention there's a "stamina" system in the campaign? You have a meter with 10 energy points, and you lose 3 each time you start a mission. If you run out of points, you need to wait an hour for it to replenish. Unless of course, you watch an ad video or you pay credits. It doesn't help that each "mission" only lasts for two or three minutes, either; each level from the original game has been broken up into 3 or four smaller levels, so you run out of energy much faster. Oh, if you die (and you will, due to the enemy upgrade scaling), you still lost the points. There was nothing even resembling this in the first few games.

    What I would change

    • Remove the leveling/upgrade system and the lootboxes entirely. For multiplayer, go back to N.O.V.A 2's level unlock system, or even N.O.V.A 3's level/credits system. For the campaign, there shouldn't even be any unlocks. Remove the rarity system, too.

    • Remove all ads, and if you have to keep a credit system, use only one. We don't need both coins and trilithium.

    • Remove enemy levels, the enemies should stay consistent throughout the game. Also, add Spiders back.

    • Shield should regenerate automatically in the campaign, and merge the bite-sized "missions" so they last longer than a few minutes. There needs to be checkpoints, so you don't need to pay to try again.

    • Add the jump button back, add abilities back (in campaign, not MP), add vehicle segments, add puzzles.

    • Improve the graphics. Even if you have to re-use N.O.V.A 3's graphics and sprites, I'm fine with that.

    • Why exactly can't we have 12-player games and all the original maps from the first game? Fix this.

    • Add any voice acting. Even if you copy it from the original 2009 game, I'm fine with that. While you're at it, maybe try some original sound effects, and add more than one track.

    • Remove the energy system entirely. Thanks.

    I'm honestly sad to see my favorite iOS franchise stoop this low. Legacy honestly feels like a re-skin of Modern Combat 5, packed full of microtransactions and ads. This is outrageous, but Legacy is objectively worse than N.O.V.A 1 in nearly every way except for a slight improvement in graphics; we have less enemies, zero abilities, zero voice acting, much less level diversity, almost no soundtrack, artificially-limited gameplay and excessive paywalls/ads.
