Apple Newton PDA keeps randomly shutting off and restarting Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:38 AM PDT I absolutely love this thing, it has worked without fail for years but now it keeps shutting off and restarting. When in use it's about hourly but I happened to wake up in the middle of the night last night and saw it restarting whilst being charged at my bedside table, so even when not in use it does that apparently. I have the floppy discs with the NewtonOS software, but if I reprogram the software then I will lose everything on there and I would rather not! What to do? If I bring it to the Apple store will they be able to do anything for me? The model is MessagePad 2100. [link] [comments] |
My iPhone X is randomly typing and swiping at random locations when I am not touching the phone Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:32 PM PDT As the title said, my iPhone X is just randomly swiping and tapping without me touching it. I took a screen cap of it when the calculator app was open and it was hitting 7, 8 and X the most. It's also horizontally swiping through my home screen changing the page in a frantic matter. It's like a ghost is touching all over my phone (sorry had to add that since it's Halloween). Is there a solution to this? I'd rather not take my phone to the Apple store to get this fixed since I'm at college and don't have a car, meaning it would take almost an hour to bike to the store. Thanks ya'll [link] [comments] |
Iphone X records a lot of static only when using imessage Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:43 PM PDT I had this exact problem with my 7plus. When i record voice memos through the voice memo app directly, the recording is clear and pretty much perfect. But when i use the voice message function within imessage, the static is so bad that you cant understand what i am saying. Has anyone else had this issue? Its odd that this only happens in Imessage but not with phone calls or other voice recordings. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:01 PM PDT So I was to work on my laptop and upgrade some things. I'd like to do it myself. Where can I get the right tool set to do so? Help? [link] [comments] |
MacBook Pro, High Sierra, grey screen of death after chime and progress bar Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:09 PM PDT Disclaimer: I'm a repair tech of some years, this has stumped me. I've posted this to /r/computertechs and /r/techsupport (https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/9t1b6w/macbook_pro_high_sierra_grey_screen_of_death/) -- trying here because, y'know, Mac folks. Overview: MacBook Pro 15" (Early 2011). Client attempted an in-place upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra, got most of the way, and it puked with a grey screen of death. It will power on, chime, Apple logo, and most of the progress bar completes…then a grey screen of death appears. Nothing further, even after hours of waiting. The hard drive he was using is long gone, and the EFI partition with it, so I'm trying to resurrect this sucker with a fresh (blank) SSD. I am getting nowhere, and I would really appreciate a fresh pair of eyes on this, if you're able to offer up any input. Details: Machine powers on fine, startup chime, Apple logo, progress bar, so far so good…then when it's about to start the graphical part of macOS (i.e. login screen), it goes to a grey screen instead. Keyboard not responsive (i.e. caps lock light not toggling), no trackpad cursor, nothing. There's nothing connected bar the power supply.
I've also tried three live Linux CDs for further diagnostics, no luck there. There is one more thing. I can install, boot and run Windows 10 natively without issue. The irony is not lost on me. Windows runs better than macOS on my MacBook Pro. Silver lining: the GPU isn't cooked, at least. The High Sierra installer didn't work. The Sierra installer didn't work. El Capitan also didn't work. I will try previous macOS versions to see if they bite, but I'm not hopeful. I have a gut feeling it's a firmware issue. I know firmware is bundled with macOS these days, but I can't get anything macOS to boot to even try manually fixing the firmware. I've tried a donor hard drive from another MacBook of the same vintage with a known-good macOS 10.12.6 on it, but even that won't boot. Rather than bash my head into a wall, I wanted to ask you folks for a second opinion. Anything else you would do? Thank you in advance for any clues. And thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |
Logged out of iCloud, now all my files are out of sync Posted: 31 Oct 2018 07:47 PM PDT Hi guys! I recently had a problem (read: was super impatient) with my iCloud keychain because I tried to rely on it as a password manager, and it wasn't syncing a password that Safari suggested for me from my phone to my MacBook. To solve the problem, I attempted to log out of iCloud on my MacBook, and then log back in. This, of course, brought up the warning that all of my stuff would be gone, so I chose the option of saving all my files locally. When I logged back into my iCloud account, it split all of my files into two separate sets of folders: "Desktop", "Documents", "Keynote", etc. under iCloud Drive in the Finder sidebar; "Desktop — Local", "Documents — Local", etc. under Favorites in the Finder sidebar. How do I go about syncing these back together? When I save things to my desktop, it saves it to "Desktop — Local". In the end, I just want it back to how it was before, i.e. how things save to my computer and sync to iCloud by default. Specs:

Force External Video on TBT3 MacBook Pros? Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:55 AM PDT Hey there, I have recently been having issues forcing video to an external monitor on any TBT3 MacBook Pros (2016 and later, post-redesign). I primarily need this when the built-in display is broken or does not work. On older Macs, I could press CMD+F1 to force display mirroring to a monitor. Other times, I could force external video by closing the clamshell itself. Thus far, I have not had any luck doing this with modern MacBooks. The only way I can get an external display to turn on is to boot into the recovery partition, at which point I can see the cursor on a gray screen, but none of the utilities are visible (they are on the built-in display which doesn't work). I am not doing this on just one MacBook, I need a technique to reliably force external video in a variety of scenarios. Any help is very much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Broken 2015 MacBook Pro Retina Screen. What can I do? Posted: 31 Oct 2018 07:39 PM PDT I dropped my MacBook (Pro, 13 in. retina, early 2015) and most of the screen is now broken. What are my options for fixing this? Do I need to get it replaced from Apple, and how much would that cost? Is there a cheaper option, would I be able to repair this myself? The computer still functions normally and I can use it when I plug it in to a monitor. [link] [comments] |
macbook pro 2017 13" showing error message when updating to macOS 14.1 Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:28 PM PDT i was running the public beta of mojave for most of the summer, but stopped receiving new updates either on or shortly before the GM build (intentionally). i am now on 14.0, build 18A389, and i tried updating to 14.1 using the method described here of downloading the installer from the app store. when i try using that method on my university wi-fi network, i get an error that says "a server with the specified hostname could not be found." i've tried rebooting my computer and disconnecting from and then reconnecting to the wi-fi, but i'm still seeing this error. does anyone have any tips? Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:23 PM PDT There's some data i still would like to get off there. Now my phone doesn't turn on at all it's just a black screen. When I click the touch button however it's not hard when a phone is actually off, I'm able to click it. Also I called my phone with a different one and it was vibrating and ringing. It stopped working after I dropped it an hour ago (turning on). But it still rings. So I assume fixing the screen will fix this issue? I still have data I need off there. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:17 AM PDT Awhile ago my Macbook pro, 2016 edition's display started acting up. Every time I open it i can only open it around 30-45 degrees without the entire screen going black. If i put the screen at around 90 degrees my display will go black however the computer itself will stay on. I know this because sound will keep running and my keyboard will still have its light on. Looked all over online and havent found really anything on this issue. Hoping I dont have to take it into Apple and there may be a fix on here. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:04 PM PDT I have recently gotten an iPhone 8 that would only use a few KB of data before failing. I'm now typing this on my replacement iPhone 8, which is also doing the same thing. Before you say it's carrier, my mom and I bought phones at the same time and her bottom end Samsung J7 works perfectly fine, only with others on this provider in my area. Any ideas? Best way to recover old, deleted text messages on iPhone 6? Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:07 AM PDT I would like to retrieve a special message that my late boyfriend sent me last summer. My last iCloud backup was only from a month ago, but according to some google sources, there is software I can buy to recover older texts. Do you have any recommendations for a specific program, or other suggestions for recovering that I haven't heard of yet? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
How can I perform multiple hardware diagnostics on fresh iOS devices? Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:39 PM PDT Hey everyone; Currently my diagnostic process is slow. Very slow. Each device is set up as a new device, and the below functions are tested. I know there has to be a better way, I found one app on the App Store, but I'd rather avoid app store downloads if possible, these devices don't have iCloud accounts and I'd rather not have to create one and individually sign into it. Sideloading the app works, but after trusting the profile it closes immediately upon opening. These are the functions my diagnostic needs to check:
If it can read serial, identifier, storage, battery cycles, and and mAh capacity, I'd jump for joy; But if not it's extremely easy to grab that. Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Adding someone to group FaceTime calls them via Audio AND Video Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:37 PM PDT I tried calling my parents. I first called my Dad and he picked up. I noticed when it was ringing there were two tiles for him. He connected on his iPhone (I could only hear him) and I could hear his iPad ringing in the background. He picked up on his iPad too and it displayed video. He was now in the call on two devices - which caused TERRIBLE feedback. I then added my Mom to the call. Basically, same thing happened to her. It appears to have dialed her via Audio AND Video. She picked up on her iPhone and there was video but she complained her iPad was ringing. So she picked up on her iPad as well and it was an Audio call. Again, terrible feedback because she was on the call... twice. We've tried about half a dozen times and each time it calls BOTH via Audio and Video. Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong? [link] [comments] |
2016 MBP Won't Boot after Fall Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:28 PM PDT I dropped my 2016 15" MBP on to the back left base corner and the screen/touchbar immediately went black. The only visible damage is that the hinge is slightly askew (<1mm). I've tried rebooting with/without power and the only thing that happens is the fan briefly spins then stops (no screen backlight, no key backlight, no noises, no touchbar backlight). I tried resetting the smc. It's out of warranty and both the official and 3rd party repair places wanted $800 pre-authorized for work. Anything I can diagnose or fix the issue before then? I have a bit of PC building experience and have already opened it up to check for obvious damage/missing connectors. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:32 AM PDT Hi everyone! Writing this fron my XR (my first iPhone, very happy with it). I'm experiencing very slow downloads from the AppStore. I have 25mbps down where i live and it always worked fine, never had a problen with the speed when downloading apps on Mac or anywhere else, but for some reason they're very slow on my iPhone now, even for small apps. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:18 AM PDT I got my battery replaced on my iPhone 6 and did a factory reset. In the General>About section it still says Carrier: Sprint and NAI: a string of random ass numbers followed by @hmc.sprint.com What is this random jazz? I thought factory reset removed all history of past use? Is this connected to my old account still? Lol [link] [comments] |
New iPhone syncing with wrong contacts? Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:15 AM PDT I'm going to try and keep this short but keep all the important details. Broke my phone Saturday, didn't know what I was going to do about fixing it quite yet (on Sunday-was at the time far from an apple store and was not going to be able to get to them by Sunday) so my gf lets me borrow old ipad 2 to try and get the messaging and everything set up so I can still communicate. Ended up being super slow and never let me actually sign in-every time I tried in the messages app, it would process for a couple minutes then give an error message with no solutions. Fast forward to Monday, go and get new phone (same model-iPhone 7plus, still has warranty) get it activated and sign in to my Apple ID. Then it downloads all of my gfs contacts and old pictures instead of the ones I wanted from my iPhone? Is there any way to get my contacts from my old phone, now that it is completely gone? Like I said, it never even worked/connected on the iPad, so I don't understand. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:57 PM PDT Everything was working fine until I restarted my computer, then every time I tried to open pages it would bounce for a sec then get the dot underneath, and then nothing. When I right click on the icon I have to force quit. I tried deleting the app and then re-installing from the app store. Is anyone else having issues? Is there a good way to fix this? I'm on the latest Mojave OS. [link] [comments] |
How can i rotate a pdf degreewise? (e.g. 1%) Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:54 PM PDT So my Scanner isn't working properly, so all my scanned documents are skew. Is there any program, that can compensate for that error and rotate it, so that it isn't skew anymore? Or a program, where i can do that manually? (preferable a free program or not expensive one) Checked the whole internet for half an hour and couldn't find any programs or solution to my problem. Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
