Why doesn’t Apple allow you to exit the incoming call screen when you have an incoming call?

It drives me absolutely nuts, I can't use my phone for 20-30 seconds!

Front and Rear Portrait Mode is NUTS on the iPhone XS Max.

I took this picture of one of our cats in semi-low light. I didn't use a light meter to measure, unfortunately. If you zoom in, you can see how accurately the camera detected her facial edges relative to the background. You can also see how little grain and noise there is.

Front Portrait Mode is WAY better than the X, IMO. This isn't SLR quality, but it's up there.

Returned iPhone XS - Some thoughts

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 05:05 PM PDT

Hey all, I got an iPhone XS on 9/21 and just returned it. I thought some people would be interested in some thoughts.

First off, a bit of background: I'm a bit into tech and I like to try everything. I interact with almost every desktop operating system--at work I have a 2017 Macbook Pro, some Thinkpad for Windows 10, and a Linux desktop. At home, I have a 2015 Macbook Pro, an Intel NUC with Windows 10, and a Pixelbook (current favorite). In terms of mobile, I've had Android phones and tablets, the Nokia N9, a Pre 3 and Touchpad, a Blackberry Q10, and iPhones. I used to do custom roms and jailbreaking and all that, but gave up on all that in the last couple years as it's getting less necessary. Generally, I lean toward Android and my most recent devices have been the Nexus 5X, iPhone 7, Pixel 1, Pixel 2, and now the iPhone XS.

With that, let's dive into the iPhone XS.

    Positive notes

    • The hardware is fantastic in general. The polished steel frame felt nice to hold and the gold is a really nice color. I wasn't a big fan of the back glass color, but pairing the phone with a "forest green" leather case from Apple led to a pretty great color scheme.

    • Speaking of cases, the case selection is great and the first-party leather cases feel so nice (I had one for the iPhone 7 too and miss it)

    • The screen is great. True Tone is a great feature. No complaints about anything here, though I didn't pull up a grey image and look at the screen at low brightness or anything like that.

    • The battery was great. It was fantastic the first day or two but once I got settled in, it was just slightly better than the Pixel 2 when I got that new. No complaints here, though.

    • FaceID is better than I expected. It worked at further distances and wider angles than I expected. Sitting on a table was still impossible for me, but I didn't expect that to work.

    • Everything is very smooth. There were some graphical glitches once in a while but for the most part, animations were smooth and fluid.

    • Grouped notifications make notifications so much more usable. Back when I had the iPhone 7, I couldn't use notifications at all because the notification center would get so flooded.

    • Tapping the top status bar to scroll all the way up. Maybe less necessary on Android since there's not as much scrolling friction, but it was nice to have.

    Negative notes

    • The hardware still felt a bit unfinished. The camera bump protruded more than I expected and seemed like a case was required to "finish" it. The side buttons were also a little edgy--a little sharper than I expected in use, and the sim card tray didn't seem to sit flush (I could feel the edges there too).

    • The physical size was slightly too wide for my hands. The 1.2mm it has over the Pixel 2 felt amplified by the gestures starting from the very opposite ends of the screen (back gesture from the far left, and notifications from the top left). Adding a case made it slightly easier to handle with grip, but everything was still a reach.

    • It's heavy. This was a good first impression with the heft making the device feel solid and premium, but it got cumbersome to hold, especially with the slipperiness. Everything felt so much lighter and easier to handle with the Pixel 2.

    • Notifications still aren't as powerful. Old notifications stay around without getting dismissed, there are no "persistent" notifications for constant things, notification center and lock screen show different notifications, even though they look exactly the same, dismissing takes two steps (someone mentioned one long swipe, but I tried and couldn't get it to work reliably), and getting to the notification center is incredibly difficult because it's in the top left corner.

    • Gestures start from the edges of the screen. The back gesture is nice, but I found that I needed to start at the very edge and swipe almost perfectly horizontal. Maybe this gets easier with practice, but it was annoying. The gesture to unlock the phone starts from the very bottom, and is hard to reach when holding the phone in certain positions.

    • Everything feels slower in general. I think it's the gratuitous animations, but I noticed when switching between the iPhone XS and Pixel 2, I could move around a lot quicker on the Pixel. Recent apps takes an extra second to trigger and I almost never used it. Swiping across the bottom bar was good, but I'd get lost in which app was on the right (the current app goes to the right after a couple seconds, it seems).

    • Scrolling is annoying. The best example I have is going from the widget screen back to the home screen. If there's any bit of up/down scrolling inertia on the widget screen, any horizontal swipe I tried wouldn't register--and sometimes it would lock to vertical scrolling until I waited for the screen to stop completely. This was super frustrating.

    • The home screen is archaic at this point. This is beating a dead horse, but it's still true.

    • Touch sensitivity seemed off. I think this is more likely some accidental touch rejection feature, but I'd randomly have to press harder to get touches to register. I never had issues with this on the Pixels.

    • iMessage lock-in is horrible. I'm surprised this isn't a bigger deal. I deliberately disabled iMessage after setting up the phone and before putting my sim card in because I didn't want my messages hijacked. After inserting my sim card, I texted someone and, to my surprise, it sent via iMessage. The setting turned itself back on for some reason. I switched it back off and texted the person with normal SMS, but from his end, he was still sending iMessages so I couldn't see his messages. I also couldn't see the messages he was sending on my Macbook Messages app for some reason. The only way to get this working, it seemed, was to have him delete the iMessage thread and text me again. How is this still acceptable at all?

    • 3D Touch is useless. I know many people here seem to love it and I tried to give it a shot. It's hard to do one-handed and there's a huge learning curve--remembering what elements could be pressed, and controlling the touch to differentiate between touch, light pressure (peek), and hard pressure (pop). The most compelling case was keyboard cursor movement, but long-press on the space bar was much more reliable.

    • The "Edit" paradigm is such a weird thing. In Messages, Notes, Alarms, and other bundled apps, there's an "Edit" button to switch to a different mode to either delete things or do some sort of modification. Why is this a different mode?

    • There was one time where plugging in my phone didn't start charging. I thought it was an issue with my cable, since I've had it for a couple years since the iPhone 7, but it looks like it's a bigger issue.

    • USB type-C is not included. Almost everything else I own uses USB type-C for power, but it's an extra $20 for that luxury on top of the $1000 iPhone.

Things I miss (from the Pixel 2)

    • Ambient music recognition. I thought this was a gimmick but it's actually really nice to pull up the phone and it already knows what's playing.

    • Always-on display. Being able to glance over and see time/notifications/upcoming events is super handy.

    • Google Clock. At two hours before an alarm, a notification comes up letting you turn off the alarm for the day, in case you wake up early and want to turn off the alarm. Also, squeezing the Pixel to snooze is great.

    • Incoming call lookup. When an incoming call from an unknown number comes in, Google searches its business databases and shows the name of the business calling if possible. I generally don't pick up numbers I don't recognize and this keeps me from missing things.

    • Selecting text in overview. This was a recent addition in Pie, but being able to select text easily from any app is convenient.

    • Fingerprint gestures. Swiping down on the fingerprint sensor on the back makes one-handed usage so much easier.

    • Google Assistant. Siri doesn't really match up.

    Conclusion

Now, many of these things are quirks of iOS and you can probably come up with list of gripes from switching from iOS to Android too. Despite all the things I listed above, the overall experience was still good and I would have kept it, but there was a deal-breaker:

    • Network drops randomly on cellular and Wi-Fi. Reception seems a little weaker in general but I didn't realize this was an issue at first--I spent a lot of time in Apollo and sometimes comments wouldn't load, which I chalked up to Reddit's servers (network indicators didn't show any disconnecting or anything). Then I noticed webpages would stop loading mid-way and saw other people talking about reception issues so I started really paying attention. It happened intermittently and I'd just have to keep reloading. The final straw was when I was watching a video and it just stopped. It took a minute of reloading to finally get the video playing again, and I wondered there, why did I pay more than $1000 just to put up with this? I'm fine with bugs--everything has bugs--but this is such a fundamental thing that totally breaks the user experience...

I returned the iPhone that night. They were busy with customers and didn't bother asking if anything was wrong.

Finally went full screen after three SE's.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 06:55 PM PDT

I'm one of those never-bigger people, but bad luck with SE this year convinced me to get the XS since its now the smallest phone Apple makes.

First reaction: this thing is too slippery for its own good. Won't even stay on my lap. I hate cases but this one needs some grip.

Second reaction: So THIS is what a premium phone feels like. it's sturdy, much more that SE by a wide margin. New SE phones still had a little give when pressing hard on the screen. XS feels like a single thought. It feels like a thousand dollar phone made of space age materials that also produce a blacker black on screen. This is going to last 5 years. Also it loads Fortnite twice as fast as the latest iPad Pro. But why does a premium phone not come with an equally fantastic charger nor a headphone adapter?

Third reaction: my thumb hurts from stretching all over the too-big screen. Make all the controls accessible from bottom corners/middle swiping and save my thumb. Or just make an SE size all-screen phone. I'd gladly sacrifice an hour of battery life for a lifetime of comfortably thumb.

Slightly Urgent. How would one remove individual websites from Screen Time? There’s safari at the top of the list at 7hrs and an another safari entry at the bottom at 2hrs. Yes. It’s exactly what you think it is.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 06:15 AM PDT

My wife and I are trying to set goals for device usage and I'm fine with having the details left out. I don't use private tabs because I don't care and she doesn't care, but 2hrs is a bit much.

Does it track private tabs like this?

    Thanks.

**edit- to clarify, we are older and have kids. She would much prefer that I carry on when I need to scratch an itch rather than harass her. You will all understand one day. I just prefer not to have this be a running joke for the next week. Her calling me Spanky and what not.

**edit 2 - she saw the "hub" and she says- "two hours? Productive. You sore?" And that was that. For the future though- there seems to be conflicting reports as to private tabs being enumerated or not.

    2 HomePods Stereo Story/Review

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 09:26 PM PDT

I bought 2 HomePods to try them out and with the COMPLETE intention of returning them. No way was I going to spend a 1000 CAD on 2 speakers. That's just insane.

Opened the HomePods, plugged them in, seamlessly connected to my iPhone and asked if I wanted to pair them as a stereo. Sweet. I said sure. Got the confirmation that they are connected. Great, easy and smooth.

Excitingly opened my Music app and played the first song and holy shit. I couldn't believe what I was listening to. My jaws opened. My eyes grew bigger. I asked `Is this even real?`. It was pure 360 degree music. I couldn't identify where the sound was coming from. It was as if my living room turned into a huge speaker and I didn't know where that speaker was. It was unbelievable. I read and watched so many HomePod reviews before trying them out and some of them I initially thought were extremely exaggerated but after actually trying them out, I can safely say these reviews aren't exaggerated at all. It really sounds as if you're in paradise. I just don't know how to describe it verbally.

Please don't compare the experience of having HomePods in your actual home to listening to them in an Apple Store. It's not the same. At an Apple Store, HomePods really sound just like any other speaker. But at your home, when they adjust to your walls or whatever, it's a completely different experience.

So, yes Apple, you won in taking my money. I am keeping my HomePods. I tried to return them but I just couldn't. They are too good.

Note to self: Never `try` an Apple product, you will eventually keep it.

shower thought, with the last 5 versions of iOS, apple has opened it up more than anyone could have predicted.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 12:51 PM PDT

First came the keyboards. Then came proactive suggestions. After that, we got Siri kit. then they opened iMessage and the phone app.

    after that, the files app.

After that came shortcuts, which was the most surprising thing to me. Scripting on iOS? Had you told me 4 years ago, I'd have told you to get off the drugs.

They still have a long way to go, mind, but if they continue going in this direction, I could easily see myself replacing my Mac with an iPad in another 5 years.

OPINION: Siri needs to talk to law enforcement.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 01:13 PM PDT

Apple Watch is cool and it can call the police for you.

Sometimes Apple Watch calls the police by accident.

Officers show up to your house and everyone is clueless as to who called the police.

Awkward exchange of "nothing is wrong officer", "are you sure ?"

Maybe Siri should tell the operator that this is an Apple Watch call/emergency before allowing the user to speak.

After the officers and I figured out it was the brand new watch on my mothers wrist then they started telling me that they get false Apple Watch calls all the time.

Leaving the walled garden and coming back - a chronicle

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:35 PM PDT

Just wanted to share my experience as rebel, wanting to go agaisnt what apple wants us to have and enjoy, I craved free will.

2016, iPhone 6s launch. There I was, with my iPhone 6 Plus in hand and wondering what should I do next? Already had a history with Apple, an iPod nano, iPhone 4 and a Mac mini; but started to get that itch, the itch to get something "brand new" to taste freedom and excitement, the iPhone was getting stale design wise and iOS seemed to get nowhere compared to Android of yore.

I pull the plug and buy a Moto X Play and you would be wondering: why such a mid range phone?

Well, I did not want to plunge a ton of money for what I considered an experiment at the time. For the record, I've been a long time windows power user and PC master race enthusiast, so android seemed so, well, "smart"; from how to give access to apps to how to customize everything and how it all worked with computer like logic amazed me, was thrilled to use a mobile device again.

But oh boy I was so freaking wrong, it all started with simple things. Notifications never activating for certain apps, no matter how much I thinkered with the phone, nothing worked. All those steps emulating computer logic and processes? turns out they pile up when trying to do the simplest of tasks... in a hurry... for work... with your boss peeking behind your shoulder.

Then came the time for my main phone contract (that iPhone 6 Plus), and there I was, standing in front of the sales girl and choosing between an iPhone 7 Plus or a Galaxy S8+ for the very same monthly fee. And my though "bet it's all in the hardware". And at first it all went smoothly... except the notifications thing even went worse with the whole edge display the galaxy phone have, and it all happened again.

The phone become noticeable slower, not enough to call it unusuable but enough to bother me with such a high price tag. Even the fast charge pad (Samsung's) took the phone a good 2 to 3 seconds to know it was supposed to charge (yeah even with the case off) and the battery drained like crazy even when left on my desk untouched (no rogue apps).

And now finally, after finding a killer deal at Best Buy got myself an iPhone Xs (kinda tired of the big phones).

The walled garden has received a sinner like myself with open arms and a forgiving heart. Notifications? I've got them all. Speed? Damn I might get pulled over for it. Battery? I reached 2pm at work with around 75% batter left. Oh and that Samsung fast charging pad? the iphone recognizes it as fast that I had to double check if it was not some trickery.

The icing on the apple pie? (weird I know). Today I received a call on me phone, had it across the room, me laying in bed with my macbook air about to get up when suddenly the call goes right to my macbook and it all goes smoothly. Yes, that is an old feature but so much time outside our beloved garden can make one forget the blessings we give for granted.

Heed my words little kids, never leave the garden. It's walled for a reason.

My iPhone X to iPhone XS Max (24 hours later) Review:

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:51 AM PDT

For those in doubt, about whether to upgrade or not, just do it.

I've had my XS Max for about 24 hours. I'll list out why I prefer it to my X.

    1) Having switched from 7+ to the X, my fingers again love all the real estate the XS Max has for the keyboard.

    2) Speakers keep getting better. Blasted some Kendrick while I brushed my teeth this morning. While water was running, still sounded pristine.

    3) Camera is just too good now. Yes, I did drink this weekend. I also indulged in pizza. And yep. Portrait selfie totally makes me feel bad with this breakout. Will stick to my dog in the garden photos for now.

    4) While I can't use the phone single handed, before the X I had the 6+ and 7+. I have no problem using it with 2 hands most of the time. See #5.

    5) Best display in the world. So clean. Just writing this on Evernote is a joy to see. So if Evernote looks amazing, prepare to get lost on YouTube. In less than 24 hours I've had 3 YouTube sessions. Again. Best display in the world.

For those of you that upgraded from an X to an XS Max, what are you liking so far?

How likely is an iPad refresh?

Any other college students getting antsy? I need a portable note taking device and I keep eyeing the old Pros but if I miss out on the design overhaul I'll be so sad.

If it's not announced mid-late Oct I'm going to bite the bullet.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 04:07 PM PDT

Sure you can find them in "recently played" in the radio tab, but it looks like an easy way to lose the stations you want to keep under the stations you started compulsively.
