So, I finally went to see the "jokingly low resolution" iPhone XR

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:26 PM PDT

And it's god damn beautiful. My favorite color is red but god damn, all the colors (except yellow, more or less) are amazing.
Also, they got the XS on display and I got my Z2 Play (1080p 5.5" Super Amoled for reference) and well I really really tried, squeezing my eyes and getting as close as possible to the screens, and even tho I saw a tiiiiiiny bit of less sharpness, overall the screen is as good as have ever been in an iPhone.
Really debating about either renovate my contract and get a red XR 128 GB or a S9...

[Guide] Making the most of Mojave: Compatible feature apps with LINKS

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:43 PM PDT

Making the most out of MacOS Mojave

    .

Since friends and family have been asking me about setting up their new Macs, I figured I'd compile some of the stuff that I do/like/use for anybody wandering in from a Google search, or just from /r/all. I spend a lot of time using my Mac, so I hunt down lots of little things.

    .

    1. Browsing: The bulk of my peers spend their computer time browsing the web and consuming media. It's great that we have lots of options in terms of maximizing battery life, performance, and functionality.

    .

    .

    Safari:

    PROS
    • Best for battery life, RAM consumption

    • New Mojave privacy and anti-tracking features

    • New, efficient safari extensions update

    • Apple ID 'keychain' password management

    .

    EXTENSIONS

    uBlock Origin

    • Extremely reliable ad-blocking service, per-element blocking
    • Must be compiled and installed manually via GitHub
    • Requires page-redraws

    .

    Wipr Ad-block

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wipr/id1320666476?mt=12

    • Ad-blocking service that does not require a page redraw for every interaction/request
    • Easy to install, very lightweight
    • Uses new Safari extensible framework

    .

    OverPicture

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/overpicture-for-safari/id1188020834?mt=12

    • Youtube/video PiP mode

    .

    Dark Mode 1.9.0

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dark-mode-for-safari/id1397180934?mt=12

    • Inverts bright website colors, does not invert image colors or videos
    • Per website whitelist/blacklist
    • Easy toggle

    .

    Chrome: https://www.google.com/chrome/

    PROS
    • Fast, compatible, and ubiquitous
    • Drag 'n' drop Google Drive folder compatibility
    • Google account password management
    • Google tracking services

    Firefox

    PROS
    • Open Source and transparent, courtesy of Mozilla Foundation

    .

    .

*Personal Anecdotes: * * I keep all of these browsers available, and use Safari primarily * Using Firefox shreds my battery * Chrome uses lots of RAM in my use case *If you encounter web errors, always try disabling ad-block and other extensions before trying other troubleshooting

    .

    .

    2. Antivirus:

    "Macs don't get viruses, right?"

    .

    General Info:

Macs do have built-in XProtect that is silently monitoring and updated in the background for exploits and vulnerabilities.

Macs have a built-in firewall that monitors TCP and UDP ports associated with your Wi-Fi and ethernet ports.

Macs handle userland privilege elevation differently than Windows does, and Gatekeeper checks developer signatures.

Macs are not the most commonly targeted platform, as the MacOS user base is much smaller than the Windows userbase.

Smart browsing and careful online activity is a very effective deterrent to most infection vectors.

Adblockers do prevent malicious banner-ad network based connections.

    .

*My family and I still use paid antivirus software. *

    .

    • 600,000 Macs were compromised with the Flashback virus
    • Backdoor Trojan "Pintsized" was able to bypass GateKeeper and XProtect
    • Multi-platform virus Clapzok was demonstrated in a proof-of-concept as able to infect 32bit executable files
    • Crossrider exploits fake signatures to install adware
    • MaMi malware was discovered to route traffic through malicious servers and capture credentials and sensitive identifying information, and is able to execute commands and generate mouse movements
    • Meltdown and Spectre exploited a flaw in Intel chips to read privileged information, including credentials

    .

Much of this exploited functionality resembles what a typical end user has to fear from the blanket term of "viruses".

    .

My rationale has always been protection using depth and breadth; layering additional detection algorithms against known process patterns has been a good way to shield my less-tech savvy family and friends from issues. Nothing can shield from a completely unique 0-day exploit from a compromised but legitimate service, but it is peace of mind for me because I too am fallible.

    Completely up to you!

There are plenty of good paid options. I use Webroot for its lightweight heuristic scanning and web filter, and keep Malwarebytes installed. I have also seen ESET and others recommended here on the sysadmin subreddit.

On Bootcamp I use the same Webroot license, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, and keep RKill handy.

    .

    .

    .

    .

    . 3. Feature apps:

Sometimes there are things missing that are either convenient or borderline necessary for your computing needs.

    4. Bootcamp:

"This program is for WINDOWS only."

    .

Macs are neat because if you configure it correctly, you can have a Mac and a Windows machine at the same time, without restarts!

    .

This is done through a regular install of Windows 10 Pro through Bootcamp, and then using a virtualization program to manage your Bootcamp volume.

Files needed: Windows 10 Pro ISO, and activation key.

    .

    Virtualization software: Parallels/VMware Fusion

    .

    BOOTCAMP SOFTWARE:

    • Adrenalin AMD drivers: If you have an AMD GPU, these will drastically improve Performance

       https://www.bootcampdrivers.com
    • Antivirus software: Supplement Windows Defender (Webroot, ESET, etc.)

    • VPN: Protect your traffic

    • uBlock Origin for Edge: Edge has excellent battery life, and great speed. Keep chrome and Firefox on the backburner for when Edge decides to not work

Run through the Bootcamp Assistant instructions, fully update Windows from the Windows side, install and activate the software you want, and reboot to Mojave. Once your Windows partition is all spec'd out run VMware fusion or Parallels from the Mac side.

    .

You can also improve your battery life and thermals on the Windows side by disabling Turbo Boost through the Power options menu by setting maximum CPU usage to 98% or lower when unplugged.

    .

You're all set to enjoy that shiny new laptop with all the bells and whistles :)

    .

    .

    KNOWN BOOTCAMP ISSUES:

    • Bootcamp Bluetooth drivers are bonkers. Differing levels of working/not working based on your hardware. If you depend on Bootcamp Bluetooth functionality, stay on High Sierra.

    • Bootcamp internal speakers have no bass frequencies. This is likely due to a drastic overcorrection from a couple years ago when Bootcamp speakers would destroy themselves due to a driver issue.

    • Bootcamp issues are not present when using virtualization software :)

Macs, iPads and Maybe More. What to Expect From Apple's Late-October Event

Why is everything in iPhone Xs Max large?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:57 PM PDT

So I went to my carrier to try the large iPhone and I was confused, I was expecting the Xs Max to display more details rather than just zooming in everything. I checked the settings and the display scale is set to normal not zoomed.

I was ready to buy it yesterday but that scaling turned me off.

I'm currently using Note 8 and I always set the DPI larger than normal.

Low Light Portrait Mode is better on the XR than on the XS/XS Max

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:00 AM PDT

According to this low light Portrait Mode in the XS is unusable which makes sense as it uses the inferior telephoto lens which has smaller aperture hence poor lighting.

Do you think Apple should push a software update to let XS/XS Max users choose which lens to use for Portrait Mode?

More of an OS-level question, but I’m curious: how did Apple obtain substantial performance gains in iOS 12?

Annoying 'do not disturb' notification @apple

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:53 PM PDT

I love iOS 12, my only gripe with it is the persistent 'do not disturb' notification that is always present on the lock screen when do not disturb is enabled. I know the half moon crescent is no longer present in the corners but making an option to turn off this notification would be nice considering my phone is always on do not disturb and I don't need to be constantly reminded lol.

PSA: If you have a release day iPhone Xs/Max, check for uneven brightness levels at low light conditions and dark backgrounds.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:29 PM PDT

Hey! So I just contacted apple with regards of this issue and they are sending a replacement. I saw a post in this subreddit a while back (second picture on the album) showing issues with their phones at low light and dark gray backgrounds.

I've noticed in certain apps which don't use true black, but a dark gray, my screen will be brighter on certain areas more than others.

Do you have this issue? I'll attach a picture with the gray I used for the test. The second picture is taken from this sub to show what the issue looks like.

    iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Theory

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:16 AM PDT

As we've all seen, it's pretty much confirmed by now that the new iPad Pro will use an iPhone 5-style straight edged, dual-chamfered design, at around 6 mm thick. I think this, along with the new Smart Connector placement, give some clues about what a new Smart Keyboard might look like.

I'm sure it has been given straight edges for functional reasons. Not only would the thicker USB-C port likely not fit on a curved 5.9 mm edge, but the new positioning of the Smart Connector suggests the Smart Keyboard will attach with a piece that sticks magnetically to the entire back of the iPad. This would not work if the edges were curved, as the sides of the cover would not be flush and would hang off the edge.

So how might the rest of the Smart Keyboard look? I've created a couple of quick mockups to visualise this. I'm expecting to see the second one. Note that the first one would require a significantly heavy cover to prevent it from falling backwards. It would, however, allow you to position the display at any angle, and it to sit better on your lap. It would also make room for a trackpad, which I would like to see for text cursor repositioning only – the Smart Keyboard should only be used when you're typing. Both designs would result in a sleeker, flatter finish than the current model allows when closed, and would also protect the back of the device. Any other changes to the materials and mechanics of the keyboard are anyone's guess.

There's also the question of what the thing on the right side of the leaked CAD models is, although as some have suggested, it may be a magnetic charging solution for the new Apple Pencil, which would be lovely.

Another side note: if the Smart Keyboard is designed in this way, it will allow the Apple logo on the back of the iPad to be covered with a landscape one, so it'll be the right way up when propped up for typing.

Honest Question: For the people who say that they can not see the difference in screen quality between Xr and Xs, how old are you ? And how is your vision ?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:23 AM PDT

Ok so when people first started saying they couldn't see any difference, I thought they may have just been defending their purchases or "apologizing." Then i remembered when my parents got their first HD TV. It was a 1080 Lg. 40 inches maybe. It was really nice and I loved watching tv and playing xbox on it. I could definitely tell the difference in quality. However, whenever I found my parents watching tv it was always in standard definition. I would always have to change the channel to the HD versions. Whenever I asked why the weren't watching in HD, they said they couldn't tell the difference. With that in mind now think that the people who claim they can't tell the difference actually might not be able to at all.

Edit: by no means am I trying to say that the xr has a "bad" screen. I am not arguing that people should care about the quality of their screens either. I am not insinuating that apple is ripping people off. I literally just wanted to know why some people can't see the difference in quality and others can. That is all. I have an Xs and when I compared in store to the Xr, I could tell. Some people were saying that side by side they could not see a difference. I was just trying to understand how/why they could not.

Went to Apple to check out the Xr in person, here’s my experience with lack of 3D Touch and flicker rate differences compared to Xs iPhones...

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:17 PM PDT

A bit of pretext: I'm an avid 3D Touch fan. I use it almost constantly on every app that has the functionality built into it. I find the options to be quick and easy to navigate, though training myself to use it consistently was a bit of a pain initially. So I went to my local Apple store to check them out.

The lack of 3D Touch on the Xr does indeed make a huge difference, at least for someone like me. If you use 3D Touch constantly as I do, you will probably find the experience of going back to multiple-tapping to navigate a bit jarring, but is something one could adapt to over time IF they don't mind doing so.

Additionally, In a side by side comparison, I found the OLED screens to have a slightly irritating flicker rate compared to the LCD of the Xr. Anyone else notice this?

If I had to choose immediately, I'd go for an Xr based on size and display differences, and learn to adapt to lack of 3D Touch, but I'm not sure that's a compromise I am willing to consider just yet.

Is now a good time to invest in Apple stock?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:15 PM PDT

I was thinking of doing so for a couple of reasons

    1. Apple event in 2 days where all the cool stuff gets announced

    2. Apple quarterly earnings will be announced soon

    3. The XR and S4 will sell like fire during the holiday season supposedly so the next quarterly earnings should also be high

I'm new to the stock market and don't want to make some stupid decision the first time around so how about helping me out?
