[The /r/Apple Show Podcast] 018 Not A Casual Grip

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 01:33 AM PDT

Thank you Apple for inventing Live Photo. Now I have some animated memories of my dog.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 11:32 PM PDT

Was going through my photos of my dog who passed away recently, and came across a ton from a few years ago when I had a Iphone 7+. Saw the little Live Photo icon, and was moved to tears realizing that I had over 100 short clips of him. Most of them were crap photos, but upon clicking on them they really offer a glimpse back into a happier time.

It was something I never thought I would used, but they are now my most cherished photos in my library.

I am seriously thinking about switching back to Iphone for this one stupid feature.

I really really appreciate that they added it.

    Thanks Apple sincerely.

If you have an older phone, take advantage of Apple’s battery replacement program! I just took my 6s in yesterday, the whole process took about two hours, and it feels brand new—snappy, responsive, something I can actually use again.

Sister broke iPhone 7 and redeemed AppleCare, came back with iPhone 7 with a Glass Back?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:46 PM PDT

My sister had her iPhone 7 Plus replaced due to the camera being fucked up and went to get a replacement. Her new iPhone is a 7 Plus, the model number confirms it, but it now has a glass back on it. Is this a modified 8 or something? Wireless charging doesn't work on it so I don't know anymore.

The jet black iPhone 7 was a thing. I'm stupid as fuck. Have a good night.

Lack of handoff between different devices for Apple Music is truly perplexing

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 08:36 AM PDT

I'm talking about the ability to listen to a specific song (or podcast, audiobook, etc. for that matter) and immediately pick up from where I left off on another Apple device.

Spotify has offered this feature for years now. So why doesn't Apple?

Continuity between devices should be a priority for Apple. The way Apple devices work together is one of the main reasons I use their products in the first place.

Surely this feature has been requested by many people. It's just perplexing to me that Apple wouldn't realize what a big deal this is in 2018.

Edit: If you agree, consider leaving Apple your feedback about this here:

Why hasn’t apple added more dynamic backgrounds??

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 11:08 AM PDT

It's been years since the original floating circles came out in the default backgrounds and i thought that was the beginning of even more dynamic backgrounds.. apparently i was wrong

    The new notes is amazing

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:21 PM PDT

I use notes everyday for class and through out the year when the lecturer posts a slide up it's a mission to get a photo of it and get it onto my notes.

But this new update is brilliant, just what I wanted. It allows me to pretty much access my phone camera from my computer without unlocking my phone and take the photo which goes straight into my notes without delay.

    Thank you Apple 🍎

p.s night mode also looks sexy af on notes.

PSA: A Warning About the AirPod Battery and Warranty

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:23 PM PDT

I've seen a lot of people quoting 49 dollar battery replacements for AirPods (each part), from what I was told today, it's only true for in warranty items. For out of warranty it's still $69 dollars (same as a lost/replacement AirPod; each part). Some of you may have known this already, I certainly didn't.

So I just spent the better of the last two days trying to get the batteries replaced on my AirPods. They are about 20 months old now, nearing the 2 year mark and don't last more than 30-40 minutes (call or music) before needing to go back into the case. I can probably stretch them to 40-60 minutes if I let them die.

So Apple's website shows a nice table:

Model Battery Service Out of Warranty Fee Lost
    AirPods $49 $69 $69
    Case $49 $69 $69

Seems straight forward so far right? I need a battery service, it should cost 50 bucks? Or 100 for the pair? Nope! It will be 140 for the pair. The $49 battery service only applies to in warranty items. Specifically, the Genius at the Apple Store quoted the following on the same page:

The Apple Limited Warranty covers a defective battery, but it doesn't cover wear from normal use. If your battery has a manufacturing defect and it's covered by our warranty or consumer law, we'll service it at no additional cost. If your battery service isn't covered, we can replace your battery for a fee.

He stated that under warranty, the battery service costs $49 dollars per item (assuming battery not defective and has gone through many charge cycles; in other words, use of AirPods caused battery problems). If you're in warranty, tough luck. If you're out of warranty, tougher luck as you pay the $69 for the same exact service. He additionally added that the software on his iPad won't let him place a battery service on an out of warranty item for $49 dollars. In order to do so, hoops have to be jumped through and special exceptions need to be made.

That said, for anyone here with out of warranty battery issues. I suggest you snatch your mom's Costco card and go get a new pair for 140. If you're in warranty and seeing battery drain, I'd request a battery service right before the warranty expires (replace each AirPod and not the case; 8 charge cycles on AirPods = 1 charge cycle on case).

I did get some additional information from a different Genius (between the 2 days, I've talked to 3 Geniuses and an Apple Support to try to figure out when the $49 battery service fee is valid). They recommended charging the AirPod case every night with the AirPods out of the case. Then putting the AirPods back into the case in the morning to finish charging up. There was no real reasoning for this other than that there is no longer a reason to discharge the battery heavily before charging back up.

TL;DR: In warranty battery service is $49 (per item) while out of warrant anything (battery service, damage, etc.) is $69 (per item). If you're noticing battery issues and still under warranty, I'd go in for a battery service right before your warranty expires and replace the AirPods only (case should last a few more years). If you're out of warranty, go to Costco and get a new pair for 140.

Iphone XS Max - Camera Raw DNG Stress Test

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 10:30 PM PDT

I wanted to see how the DNG Raw files held up to some post processing. Here's an example of how the photo was originally composed compared to detail you can get back out of it in photoshop's camera raw utility. You can definitely pull more detail out of the shadows than I figured. The noise is pretty heavy though.

I just got my iPhone 7 back from Apple after a battery replacement, and they replaced the entire screen assembly along with it, at no additional charge. Is this normal?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 08:38 AM PDT

The screen wasn't damaged at all beforehand, and the whole thing only cost me $29 plus taxes and shipping. Needless to say, I'm quite happy with it, but still surprised.

Perhaps the old screen was damaged during the repair and needed to be replaced. Anyone have a similar experience?

Why are iPhones so much more expensive in Europe?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 05:15 AM PDT

For example the iPhone Xs is $999 in the US (without taxes). This would be around €850. That plus 19% taxes (in Germany) would be €1,011.50. But the price in Germany is €1,149.99. So what exactly makes it €140 more expensive? €1,149.99 equals $1,350 so we "technically" spend $351 dollars more than you (Of course excluding your taxes).

Am I at least a little bit right in this assumption? :D

Can you tell me what you payed for your phone tax included and in what state you live? I'm curious how much you actually pay.

Accessing control center on an iPhone XS Max is pushing the limits on the screen size. They may need to move the control center pull down to a different spot or gesture.

Pro tip: If you’re still waiting for your Apple Watch delivery, try walking in an Apple Store and asking if they have the one you want

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 10:29 AM PDT

Apparently they have quite a few in stock for walk-in customers. You may have to make a reservation and come back in a couple hours later like I did, but it worked out for me. Got mine on launch night, long after people were told they had to wait until October to get their online order. They weren't even close to running out of some models either. I got the 44mm Space Grey GPS model, arguably the most popular one.

Worst case, you'll waste your time. Best case, you'll get one today and can cancel your online order

How do you get the UDID on the Xs Max and other new phones?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 01:02 AM PDT

As per title, it seems to have been removed but we still need it in order to create provisioning profiles that include our phones.

I did find a terminal command that outputs all of the current real and virtual devices connected and their UDID, but the UDID for the Max wasn't like the others and didn't resemble a hash. When I used it on developer.apple.com it said it was an iphone, but the cert still fails due to the phone not being provisioned.

    Anyone?
