Trump says will meet Apple CEO Tim Cook for dinner Posted: 11 Aug 2018 03:10 PM PDT |
Posted: 11 Aug 2018 11:02 AM PDT Sub rules say self-promotion is allowed on Saturday so I thought you guys might find this useful. I built this app from feedback from the /r/AmoledBackgrounds sub. OLEDify converts regular dark wallpapers into Pure Black wallpapers (#000000 - pixel is off). Since the pure black pixels are off, it helps reduce battery use on the newer phones with OLED and AMOLED screens. For iOS, iPhone X is the first phone with OLED screen. Even if your iPhone doesn't have an OLED screen, I find pure black wallpapers looks super crisp and nice! Here's the link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/oledify-pure-black-wallpapers/id1416984528?ls=1&mt=8 Here's an example before and after: Before (Artist credit: Nychos the Weird): Notice the dark grey background in the image which still keeps the pixels on and uses battery. https://i.redd.it/w098c8sefpa11.jpg After (Background is pure black and also resized for the phone screen): Also notice the image name in the link ends with the % of true black (75point1) and the resolution (750x1334). Demo video and screenshots: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/br5kdflkniwt9u0/AADkRawLrLR3isiEs5AMwjMua?dl=0
I would also like to thank all the beta testers from the /r/AmoledBackgrounds community who helped bring this app to where it is now. I really appreciate the feedback! Overall, the testers think the app is quite useful but I am open to any additional feedback and criticism to make it even better! Also if anyone has any questions regarding the app or the development process, feel free to ask! EDIT: Regarding the savings in battery life: I often use my phone mostly for looking at the bus time widget. So the wallpaper and the wallpaper background on the widget screen does make a difference. Also a lot of people frequently hit the power button just to see the notification they just received. So that also saves a bit of battery if the pixels are off (admittedly small but still). Note that the app can be used not just for oledifying wallpapers - you can edit wallpapers on it too and crop/resize them for your different screen sizes etc. The main reason I built this was for the crisp true blacks and then from the research, I found it might make a small difference in battery life too so that was a cherry on top. Is the taptic engine under utilized? It's such a great piece of tech gone to waste. Posted: 11 Aug 2018 08:36 AM PDT Apple could do so much with it. I saw some good suggestions involving notifications, but what do you think? [link] [comments] |
What does everyone use for browser on macOS and iOS? Posted: 11 Aug 2018 03:38 PM PDT Okay, so the problem I have with switching to iPhone full time is that I really want to use iCloud Keychain for all my passwords, just like I use Google Smart Lock on Android. But from what I can tell, you can only sync passwords from Safari in the Keychain. If I use Safari, I can't use Reddit Enhancement Suite. So I'm kind of at a crossroads. If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them. [link] [comments] |
What’s your most controversial Apple opinion? Posted: 11 Aug 2018 10:46 AM PDT For me it has to be: I love the Magic Mouse and I HATE the Magic Trackpad, it feels very weird to work on it for an extended period of time, and I feel I work slower using the trackpad vs using the mouse. Friendly reminder for those with several year old MBPs to take off the base and clean the fans Posted: 11 Aug 2018 01:02 PM PDT Super simple on the 2012-2015 laptops, and has reduced the noise and heat on my 2014 15" MBP considerably. I'm not sure about the newer Macs but they will likely be relatively dust free for another year or two. Note of caution: Make sure you have the exact screwdriver sizes or you risk stripping the screws. [link] [comments] |
Wireless charging case for AirPods available on amazon Posted: 11 Aug 2018 11:35 AM PDT |
Posted: 11 Aug 2018 11:04 AM PDT I've used the Mail app that comes with Win10. I've used Thunderbird, Outlook, Mailbird, Opera Mail... they all feel so unfinished and half-ass'd. [link] [comments] |
Can't handle the battery drain on 11.4.1 Posted: 12 Aug 2018 12:58 AM PDT I have an iPhone 7 with 90% battery health and am experiencing some horrible battery drain recently, especially since the 11.4.1 update. It has just hit noon here and I'm already at 55% having not used it much. Anyone else experiencing this? It's honestly making my phone more of a liability than anything. Was wondering if the public betas would be a viable option to remedy this or if they are too buggy to run on a main device right now. Does anyone have any insight on whether or not it would be viable? Thanks in advance for feedback! [link] [comments] |
So my iPhone 7 randomly vibrates without any notifications being recieved Posted: 11 Aug 2018 03:51 PM PDT Its been almost 6 months i think my iPhone randomly vibrates and when i look at it there's nothing. And its not something of my imagination cause the reason i decided to write this was because it vibrated while i was using it, and got legit no notifications at all. Anyone knows why? Anyone has the same issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Aug 2018 10:06 PM PDT What do you guys prefer Apple Music or Spotify? Is Apple Music any better in iOS 12? [link] [comments] |
Not an Apple user. Would be easier to take note with iPad? I'm a student. Posted: 12 Aug 2018 12:43 AM PDT Hi everybody! Last year I've bought a dell, just because I felt the need of a full pc (being able to use full photoshop and premiere is convenient), but taking note with a pc is... Distracting? I feel like I don't really follow the lessons. I'm talking to you, students with iPad! (lol) Are you really satisfied by taking notes with iPad and apple pencil? Do you emulate the mental process involved in paper(if you get what I mean..)? Thanks everybody for the kind attention. [link] [comments] |
I pay for Apple Music, yet can only listen to select items? Posted: 11 Aug 2018 12:49 PM PDT I can download a whole album and one song out of the whole thing will be greyed out and it can't be played or found on Apple Music other than that track. I can't even buy it!? This song has been unavailable on Apple Music since the release in 2015 so is that an agreement with the artists or [link] [comments] |
2018 MacBook Pro audio cutting out when streaming videos in browsers Posted: 12 Aug 2018 12:05 AM PDT This has been happening since getting the 2018 MBP. Using any browser, at random intervals the sound in a video would cut out, often the video will stop playing after a few seconds (for YouTube, the spinner will show up) and the browser tab rendered unusable for watching videos. For Chrome, I would need to restart the browser. For Firefox a tab reload will restore audio. Haven't tested Safari enough to reproduce this reliably. Came across this thread with others reporting this problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8466406 One of the suggestions is to turn off Hey Siri. Trying this now, hoping this workaround will do until Apple patches this issue. Posting this thread in case others run into the same issue on their new MBPs. [link] [comments] |
13” 2018 base Macbook Pro performance Posted: 11 Aug 2018 11:09 PM PDT A few months ago I had a 15" 2017 macbook pro, it was fast and suited my needs (logo and tshirt design work). But I sold it because it was too big and heavy and I went back to my 12" 2017 macbook. From what I saw at the geekbench result, the new 13" 2018 Mbp (i5) is pretty much the same as my old 15" 2017 performance wise. Is this accurate? If I buy the 13" 2018 (i5), will I get the same speed as my old mbp in real world usage? Any information about this would be great, thanks in advance! Edit: I don't game, couldn't careless about dgpu since my 12" doesn't have that too and I could live with it. [link] [comments] |
External drive losing permissions after reboot on Mac mini Posted: 11 Aug 2018 10:41 PM PDT I have a Mac mini and a 2TB external drive that I use as my Plex content. It is formatted as Mac OS journaled. It was working fine until I rebooted the Mac. The content is still there but it won't let me write to it. Permissions are all set to read and write under get info. Tried Chmod as well the first time it happened earlier today, I had to reformat the drive again for it to work. I tested for a few hours and tried another reboot. Same thing happened. Unfortunately I don't have another Mac to test it out. Would anyone have any advice Thanks [link] [comments] |
iPhone 6s Smart battery case not charging phone Posted: 12 Aug 2018 02:00 AM PDT So I got a smart battery case for my iPhone 6s, but tonight when I left it to charge it showed up as having charged up to 3%, but when I unplugged it, it came back up to 100%. I found this extremely odd since the case is practically new and maybe this is a software bug, but afterwards it stopped charging at all. I didn't buy it from Apple but is there a chance I can get a new one from them? Is this just a bug? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Aug 2018 01:17 AM PDT When I bought the 2017 iMac I was blown away by the screen quality. iMac color profile match P3, and it looked amazing. But after a year with the iPhone X, I have to say there is a lot to be desired on the iMac. Photos and videos looks brilliant on the iPhone, and I now feel disappointed when viewing them on the iMac. Also, there seem to be an explosion of advances in the OLED/LED world of TVs, particularly with regards to higher nits/brightness, support of various HDR modes that greatly expand color latitude and all around just really crisp and beautiful screens coming out at a discount. In other words, in just over a year the technology advances on screen have been amazing and I´m left feeling Apple could really push the iMac screen now. Can we expect 1000 nits and 2020HT color gamut in the coming iMac? Rumors from Ming Chi Kuo seem to indicate a big jump in screen performance. Totally unlikely, but dream display would be bezel-free 27" OLED with ProMotion 120hz, 2020HT gamut running in 8K resolution. Completely unlikely I know.. But what can we realistically expect? How's the battery life on 13" MBP 2018 Posted: 12 Aug 2018 12:55 AM PDT How's the battery life on the 13" model compared to the 13' 2017 model? Is it better or worse? And how much more battery you get in the 15" model? I know there are tests out there on the internet but would like to know the real life results in day to day tasks such as programming, browsing, streaming etc. [link] [comments] |
Truetone is the feature I miss the most from my IPP Posted: 11 Aug 2018 10:01 AM PDT Earlier this summer I ran into some financial issues and decided to sell my 10.5" IPP w/LTE. I had an iPad mini 4 as a backup and I figured I could do 'most' of the things I was doing with the pro, but also realizing that I would have to use my MacBook more for long typing etc. What I'm surprised about is that the speed, size, and connectivity are not the things about downgrading iPads that has struck me the most, it's how white and bright the screen is. It's so glaring and the screen smaller so I have to hold it a little closer and I find most times I just use my iPhone 8 plus now. Going to go back to the iPad Pro as soon as I can. Coincedently the recent articles about blue light blinding us have come out. Have you had to go back to a regular screen for long periods of time? Was it as distracting for you as it was for me?
