How prevalent is the keyboard issue?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:42 AM PDT

So, I understand that it's an active issue, which Apple has acknowledged and is repairing. I thought, however, it was only a small percentage of MacBooks that were affected, so I was about to take the chance. I was REALLY surprised to encounter a display model at the store with multiple keys that wouldn't register keystrokes.

Windows + Android user considering a Macbook Pro for school, have lingering questions and concerns

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:59 AM PDT

Hello, this is going to be a long post. But I would appreciate the ones who read through the entire thing and give feedback.

I will be going back to school this fall and I am looking to buy a laptop for school. Since I will be doing digital media work (graphic/web design, video editing, 3D modelling, etc.), Macbook Pro is recommended (but not enforced) by the college. However, I have always been a Windows guy and after trying out the Macbook Pro at my local Apple store, I became interested in it. I have to say that it has a beautiful screen and the OS is completely smooth and easy to use. I had only been there for 45 minutes and I already somewhat knew my way around it. Build quality is definitely top-notch like I've never seen before and it is so fucking light and sexy. It also seems like the perfect machine to have for what I will be doing in school and beyond in my career.

However, my impressions of the machine do not change the fact that I am a Windows and Android user. So before I decide to make the switch or not within this month or the following, I'd like to have a few of my questions answered and my concerns addressed. Questions first:

    1. Would you say having an iPhone is a huge advantage/a necessity if I want to make the most out of my Macbook Pro? I own a Google Pixel 2 XL and will not be switching for about two years. I know you can sync essentially everything to your Macbook Pro with an iPhone. So about what percentage of features am I missing out on as an Android user? What features or apps can I make use of as an Android user?
    2. What year of Macbook do you recommend? I hear that 2015 is the best model so far. I was trying out both the 2015 and 2017 model and while I like the trackpad and the touchbar on the 2017, I liked the keyboard and the availability of various ports of the 2015. Is 2015 good enough for the Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud stuff for the next 2 to 5 years? Or should I go for the 2017 and live the dongle life? Will there be a 2018 Macbook Pro by late August?
    3. If I buy a refurbished/used Macbook Pro from a third-party, would I be able to buy Apple Care for it? I found a few cheap options from Best Buy (2015, i7, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM for $2699 CAD) and Kijiji (2015, i7, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM for $2000 CAD).
    4. If I buy a refurbished or new Macbook Pro from Apple officially, are there any student discounts or financing I can take advantage of?
    5. Wireless mouse, is it just Bluetooth or is there a 2.4GHz option? I would like to connect my Bose QC35 II while I'm working on stuff (while using a mouse). Also, I have a Huion H610 PRO tablet that I will be using for school and I am concerned about the compatibility. It has a USB-Type A but not sure if Sierra/High Sierra would support it.
    6. What advantages does Macbook Pro offer vs. Windows machines such as Aero 15X v8 or the MSI GS65 which offer more powerful components and are (possibly) cheaper? Other than the beautiful screen, of course. Why do you think I should take a Macbook Pro over these machines?
    7. Questions to Windows users: what features from Windows do you miss? What should I expect to no longer have access to?

    Now, as for my concerns:

    1. Compatibility. If I move over to Macbook Pros, I am possibly yielding my ability to use some of my peripherals such as my mouse and my drawing tablet.
    2. Gaming. I am a bit of a gamer who plays games to unwind. However, while I am in school, I will not be playing as much as I do. If I wanted to game, it's only PC or die. The only console I plan on considering is the Switch. So do you think Macbook Pro is worth giving up PC gaming for? I can always build a computer after I'm done with school when I have the money, but boy would my entertainment be limited during my free time in school.
    3. I am not looking to completely move to the Apple ecosystem. I own a Pixel 2 XL, Google Home, Google-assistant-specific Bose QC35 II and will most likely be upgrading to another Android iteration in a couple of years. I do not see myself moving back to iPhones. Am I putting myself at a big disadvantage?
    4. Dongle life. No HDMI, no ethernet port, possibly no SD card slot. Despite all of this, is it worth tolerating the dongle life for a beautiful Macbook Pro?

Now, with the above in mind, do you think it's still worth moving over to the Macbook Pro?

I'm really interested in moving over and I know that's a lot of questions, so I highly appreciate you guys' answers.

Edit: also wanted to throw in that if I were to buy a Macbook Pro, a 15-inch/500 GB SSD (or more)/16 GB RAM is what I'll be going for as required by the college and I am located in Canada (in case buying options or regional offers are kindly presented to me)

[Tech Support] Insane unusual RAM usage, crazy pixellation on screen, and disappearing service battery warning

Hey, not sure if this is the right place to put this but I was hoping to get some advice from fellow Macbook Redditors.

    I have a mid-2015 Macbook Pro, 15", with Retina. 512 SSD and 16gb RAM.

Last night, I was trying to export 310 photos from the native Photos app (so from iCloud Drive i guess?) to a local folder on my Macbook. I did, however, forget this folder was also in my iCloud Drive, but either way it was going to be easier to access them from this folder in order to edit them in Lightroom. For some reason, importing to Lightroom directly from Photos resulted in tons of duplicates and they were all terrible quality (despite being RAW files).

Anyway, as I allowed this to process, the amount of RAM Photos used skyrocketed. It was a gradual skyrocket, but it seriously went from 1-3 GB RAM in the activity monitor to, by the time I decided to just pull the plug on the import, 30 GB of RAM. CleanMyMac was yelling at me that I was almost out of RAM entirely. I don't even know. I closed everything BUT the Photos app and this was still happening.

Also, and I think this is related, but whenever the RAM was almost full, along with the lag that kept happening, a bunch of multicolored pixels kept spazzing on the screen periodically. The first time, they were static, and moving my mouse over a button in whatever app would make them disappear in that section (and switching to a different window cleared them completely), but later they just kinda flashed instead. (Sorry for the size and picture quality, smaller made it harder to see and I did the best I could lol)

Finally, last week, I clicked my Battery icon in the status bar to find the "Service Battery" warning.

It was there for a while. Yesterday, after I quit the import, and restarted (and ran Apple Diagnostics or whatever), I happened to check it again, and it's gone. What??? I haven't even taken it to an Apple store yet to be looked at. I don't even understand.

I'm a web development major. I need a laptop, so I really just want to know if there's anything I can do to make sure this Apple® brick keeps living or if it's nearing EOL.

Sorry for the looooong post, thanks for reading.

My MacBook just installed an update and after booting it promped me to change iCloud password as well as entering the password from the first owner

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:55 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

using Apple products for 7 years, but just bought my first Mac on Friday (MBP 2015 13" from some guy). As I wanted to be 100% sure about the fact that Mac is clean and ready to use, I've reinstalled it completely (first it downloaded Yosemite, then I upgraded it to High Sierra from App Store). Today I received an update which was installing about 15 minutes and after rebooting, the Mac started some "small" setup, which prompted me to change my iCloud password (it said that I can't use same two passwords for Mac and iCloud) and also asked for the old password from previous installation of Mac, because Apple can't decrypt it (of course, I had the password so it was no problem). It also configured Siri and I successfully booted up to Finder.

How come that this happened? What's the reason? Is it normal? Thanks.
