Is anyone else annoyed how "funny" Siri is?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 07:16 AM PDT

I watched the new video of MKBHD about the MacBook. There he is telling Siri "open my Downloads folder" and she responds with "Heres that Folder, good stuff in there". I don't know if its just me but I find this very annoying and useless. Who wants to hear this all the time?

In my opinion there should be an option to turn off all remarks of Siri

Siri bleeps out the word 'queer'

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 12:13 PM PDT

I was pretty surprised this morning when I asked Siri to "play Queer by Brockhampton" only have to have her respond like this, bleeping out the word 'Queer' in both the text and spoken response.

I find this strange because of how LGBTQ+ inclusive the company is and how 'queer' is now used not as a pejorative but as an umbrella term. It's also not a word that would be censored on television, which to me makes it that much more strange to have it censored in this context.

I'm open to hearing your thoughts on this one

Macbook Pro Touchbar Setup the Right Way

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 07:43 AM PDT

With all the latest posts about the future of Macs and the love / hate of the Touchbar, I wanted to share how I came to really enjoy my setup using BetterTouchTool. I seen multiple presets across the forums, but I decided to take pieces from all and create the best clean design for my needs. BetterTouchTool (BTT) allows you to add custom features and shortcuts using scripts. Check out my TouchBar screenshots with the preset file. Enjoy. I uploaded the Application Support Folder & the .plist file. Copy BetterTouchTool Folder to ~/Library/Application Support/ then .plist to ~/Library/Preferences/

The absolute LAST thing I want from the 2018 Mac Mini

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 11:20 AM PDT

OK so there are rumours about a full Mac line refresh. Hopefully that includes the Mac Mini. A lot of people are saying they want an Apple TV sized (and similarly priced and spec) Mac Mini. This is the opposite of what I think the Mac Mini should be.
I personally want the old pre 2012 Mac Mini back. Imagine a space grey Mac Mini with upgradable RAM and HDD, TB3 for eGPU support and if we're really lucky an upgradable CPU (but I doubt it). It uses the Coffee-Lake CPUs so it's hexa-core across the board.
An Apple TV sized Mac Mini would be as good as useless as it obviously would be very power-limited to the point where it would only really be useful for media consumption (and at that point just get an Apple TV) and word processing/powerpoint etc. So what's the point?

Airpods 2 Wishlist & Release date?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 09:00 PM PDT

I love my airpods and use them all day (and night) for music, calls, podcasts and voice over features. Siri is below average as an assistant though. Would love to see better volume control in the Airpods 2 and software driven noise cancelling would be nice, especially to create a quieter nap space on planes. Anyone know when they are likely to be released?

    Mac intro videos.

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 07:48 PM PDT

Am I the only one that misses those Mac intro videos? I remember getting my first mac in 2009. It impressed me how much effort they had put into making the experience like nothing else. It was the little things that I loved about owning a Mac.

    Toronto Apple Store - EC

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 08:27 AM PDT

Anyone else feel like this place is a complete disaster? I went in yesterday and there were like a hundred people in there - but maybe 6 laptops on display. The new Apple speakers were just sort of on the side of a table with no signage about what they were. And there were probably 4 homeless people wandering around - one without pants. It's probably the worst retail experience in that mall, besides maybe a trip to McDonald's - why no love Apple?

In praise of the Mac Touch Bar

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 04:31 AM PDT

It's rare to hear anything but criticism here about the Touch Bar. Whilst I do agree Apple needs to do much more with it, after using Better Touch Tool I'm starting to really love it.

I've installed a default BTT setup that for minimal effort gives me pretty much everything I need.

I love the fact that it surfaces things I frequently need so easily. Other things are cool like AirPods battery.

However, BTT whilst incredible is not something that non power users would find that accessible.

Apple really needs to build a Workflow/ Shortcuts way of just dragging and dropping elements into a Touch Bar.

It kind of astounds me that this doesn't exist at this point.

TLDR; imho the Touch Bar can be incredibly useful, but is currently hobbled by Apple's inexplicable neglect, meaning that only power users can currently use it to its full potential through BTT

Are all iPhones unlocked in Cambodia?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 11:06 PM PDT

I want to buy a new iPhone 6 in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia. Some shopkeepers have said that I need to buy a Cambodian SIM to use the phone in Cambodia, but that I can use the phone overseas with a foreign SIM. Is this possible? Is this iPhone unlocked worldwide or does it only work in Cambodia with a Cambodian SIM? Thank you for any info you can provide!

Boot Camp Does Not Work Correctly on the New MacBook Pros

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 10:06 AM PDT

Apple released Boot Camp drivers a few days ago, and of course they just revealed more issues with the machine, in addition to all the throttling:

    1. Audio lags by up to 2 seconds through the headphone jack. This can be seen in everything from DirectX applications, to YouTube, to even iTunes.
    2. Audio will start to "crackle" throughout the system regardless of output source, intermittently when not under load and consistently under load.
    3. When rebooting from Windows to macOS the internal keyboard and trackpad are disabled, requiring you to kill power to the system entirely to restore control.

Note that these are all issues with Apple's drivers on an otherwise clean install. Apple Support says to call Microsoft, but Microsoft can't do anything about it as these are drivers built by Apple for hardware built by Apple, and signed and released by Apple. If you're looking to test things cross platform on the same machine or even just looking to play some games in Windows you're going to have at best a bad time.

The good news is this should all be fixable with updates to Boot Camp, but it's anyone's guess as to when that'll happen.
