Posted: 25 Jul 2018 05:01 PM PDT I'll start with the specs: "Late 2009" 27" iMac 2.8ghz quad core i7 12gb RAM History: It came running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard and as of earlier this year, is now running one of the latest OS versions (I forget which one it is since I'm not near my computer now). It had a hard drive recall that Apple replaced a few years ago, also a GPU failure maybe a year before that where Apple also damaged the motherboard during the swap and ended up replacing it. So the motherboard and disk are only 4-5 years old. Symptoms: It used to run a 200+ track Logic project with ease and now it overloads repeatedly during songs with just 6-12 tracks, sometimes even projects with just 1-2 tracks (both disk speed and CPU). I've had to shut down recording sessions for weeks because Logic would overload in the middle of recording takes every single time, even on lightweight projects. Not only that, it occasionally struggles at comprehending basic typing (type a sentence and all the words show up at once several seconds later). I don't understand why a computer that used to be a work-horse can be so slow now. I have external drives, but my Logic projects are on the iMac drive. I've done disk repairs. My drive also is not nearing it's capacity which has caused sluggishness in the past. It will also show full WiFi and connects just fine, then when I wake the computer next day it will still show full WiFi yet won't actually load a webpage unless I restart the computer. Another iMac in the household, my iPhone, and my iPad Pro don't have this connectivity issue so it's not the WiFi. Is there something I can possibly do such as restore it and reinstall the OS or run a screen for malware, or has is it simply time for an upgrade? [link] [comments] |
iPhone 7 Can't Transmit/Recieve audio in a call Posted: 25 Jul 2018 06:52 PM PDT Hello! My friend's iPhone 7 stopped being able to transmit/receive audio in calls out of the blue. She's tried Facetime, Discord, phone calling, and even Messenger. Nobody can hear her, and she can't hear anyone she's talking to. She can still hear audio as long as it's not in a call. She also doesn't have the option to use speakerphone. Anyone have this issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 07:40 PM PDT I have an older 2007 iMac that got the flashing question mark folder. I figured the hard drive died. I ended up getting it to run of an external hard drive. Is it worth replacing the hard drive in it or should I junk it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 07:44 PM PDT I bought this for my cousin, https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-2280SS-Internal/dp/B077SQ8J1V before doing any research and it doesn't fit. I don't want to return it and get one that's compatible because that's $200 extra. Will this adapter fit? https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Adapter-Macbook-Converter-Support/dp/B076P87ZYP/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1532305376&sr=8-3&keywords=macbook+pro+2015+m.2 [link] [comments] |
I'm looking for a replacement battery for an early 2011 15 inch macbook pro, any suggestions? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 05:30 PM PDT After contacting Apple, it seems my only option of getting a battery directly from them is driving 200 miles total or mailing it into an authorized repair center (because Apple does not repair vintage macbooks, or at least that's what I've been told). I don't really have the margin to do either of those things right now because I need my computer for work and don't have the time to take a long trip. Are there any other batteries I could purchase that would be recommended by you all? Thanks! I've seen good reviews on these from OWC, if that's a good option I might just get that but I wanted to check with people who know a lot more about this than I do first! [link] [comments] |
Where do I register for Apple Airpods warranty? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:33 AM PDT I tried finding on Apple website but can't see anywhere to fill in the warranty form. [link] [comments] |
Facetime call failed on 2018 MBP Posted: 25 Jul 2018 06:27 PM PDT I recently picked up an i7 2018 MBP, and when I try to Facetime with either of two devices, I always get call failed after about a minute. Both of the other two devices are on the same wifi network as each other at location A, which is a different network than the MBP at location B. Their wifi and internet connection isn't the best, so it could be their connection, but I can Facetime either device from my phone without the call failing. It will occasionally give me the poor connection screen on the phone, but the MBP just drops immediately. I can Facetime my phone (on wifi or LTE, but they are both the same AppleID) from the MBP without issues. Has anyone else seen anything like this? [link] [comments] |
How do I get out of the "imports" section of the photos app on OSX? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 03:31 PM PDT Hi everyone I imported some pictures a while ago, and now I cannot get out of the imports section of the photos app. I can only see the pictures I've imported, not all the ones on my iphone and ipad.... How do I go back? Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/XThilUW.jpg Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 03:38 PM PDT Sometimes my MBP (13-inch, 2016 with Touch Bar) becomes unresponsive when an external display is connected. Normally I have an external monitor, mouse and keyboard connected with the laptop lid closed. However sometimes when the laptop is idle, when I come back it seems to be stuck in sleep mode. The external display will be black as if it's not getting any signal. If I open the laptop lid, the keyboard will light up, but the screen will stay black as if it's sleeping. Nothing happens when I type. I have to perform a hard shutdown to get it working again. I've already tried NVRAM/PRAM and SMC reset and it doesn't seem to help. Any ideas how I can troubleshoot further? [link] [comments] |
How to add another Mac to Time Capsule when it is full? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 03:18 PM PDT I have a new MacMini and I want to add it to my existing Time Capsule but it's pretty much full (30gb remaining). Every time I try to back it up it fails. Is there a way to delete old backups apart from using terminal? I don't really need backups from 2014 anymore [link] [comments] |
Received a previously owned MacBook Pro - trying to guarantee it's secure? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:47 PM PDT Hey /r/applehelp , I recently received a fairly new MacBook Pro from my company as a work laptop. However, this device was previously held by a rather disgruntled employee. Both my manager and I have a slight concern regarding the device -- I am by no means technologically illiterate, but I have spent the entirety around windows machines (with exposure to linux distros)-- no problems there. but I have never owned an apple device. Anytime relatives ask me for help with their iphones or ipads I always get confused and forget simple things like all the settings for every app are under the 'settings' menu versus each app having its own settings menu. but I digress. essentially, I have been given the MacBook Pro back in what appears to me to be a factory reset state.. is there any chance that this could be sideloaded with some kinda of malicious installer or spyware? I know that sounds tinfoil hat, but based off this disgruntled employees past history and actions taken, is not entirely a crazy thought. I guess what I'm trying to ask is can I be assured that this 'first time setup wizard' ensures a blank machine and that there are no lingering issues? am I worrying too much over nothing? would appreciate any advice from more seasoned Apple users. Macbook Pro Power Consumption During Sleep Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:40 PM PDT I have a mid-15 MBP 13" running High Sierra 10.13.6. Is it normal to consume 30% of battery while it is sleeping for 9-10 hours? I unplug and use my compute for about 10 minutes before work to check email. I then close the lid and come back in the afternoon and my battery level is around 68-70%. Power Nap is disabled. Using 30% during sleep seems excessive to me. [link] [comments] |
Distorted sounds coming from headphone jack Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:10 PM PDT On my Macbook Air, all the sound coming through my headphones sound super distorted for some reason. This was fine the day before. I've tried switching headphones and resetting PRAM but it's still not working correctly. Any way I can fix this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 11:55 AM PDT The iMac is constantly dropping the connection to the keyboard and mouse. The OS displays a "connection lost" box. Sometimes it reconnects after a few seconds, sometimes it takes a few minutes. Toggling the power switches on the keyboard and mouse only help sometimes. Both are fully charged, as per the battery indicator on the screen. I can plug in an external Bluetooth adapter and use the mouse from my work computer with the iMac just fine (Logitech MX2), and it doesn't drop anything. The issue appears to be related to only the Magic Mouse/keyboard, but I can't tell if it's related to the iMacs internal Bluetooth chip or not. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:49 AM PDT Hello. I own a MacBook Pro, 13 inch, mid 2012. A month ago the SSD that i was using stopped working. After forcing a reboot, i got the white screen with a folder and question mark. I still had the HDD that came with the computer when i bought it, so I installed it as a temporary fix so that I could keep using the computer. Recently I bought a new 120GB SSD to replace the HDD. I installed it internally immediately but the SSD didn't show up in disk utilities. I put the HDD again inside the computer and it was booting normally. I connected the new SSD with an external enclosure to see if it was a problem with the new SSD, but it was detected through the usb. Tried to format it and it worked. Installed it again internally, but it still wasn't detected. Went back to the HDD and cloned its contents to the new SSD with SuperDuper. After that I put the new SSD inside the computer and still wasn't detected. Right now, I'm using the old HDD to post this. Am I doing something wrong? Why is the new HDD being detected and the new SSD isn't? The previous SSD that I installed (the one that stopped working), had no similar issues. Thank you for your time! [link] [comments] |
How to change the scale on the Health app for Sleep Analysis? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 04:40 PM PDT My sleep analysis scale starts with 6pm at the top and then 6pm at the bottom... It counts 6pm as a new day. I took a nap that started before 6pm and ended at 7:15pm and so it put the 6-7:15 part of the nap on tomorrow's sleep data (July 25-26 day) and even though it should still be on July 24-25 day. If you know of a better sleep track app than the Health app, you can let me know because I'm fine with switching apps lol. [link] [comments] |
Trying to fix my MBP, any thoughts? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 12:38 PM PDT So I posted here the other day the following issue: "I have a MBP mid 2012 (with SSD which, testament to Apple build quality, is holding up pretty remarkably 6 years down the line. There is however one issue that has been pestering me for the past year. About once every 7-10 days, the laptop will suddenly die and can be rebooted pretty quickly (often automatically by either plugging-in or unplugging the magsafe). However, it will often only boot up for a few seconds before turning off again (sometimes during the loading screen). It will take around 15 such reboots before the laptop is set again for a week or so. It will often happen just spontaneously, and I don't use the mac for anything more taxing than chrome and word-processing. It does seem to happen more often if I'm using the laptop on battery-mode. I've reset the smc and pram countless times to no avail. The battery cycle count is 250 with normal condition reported (had it replaced a few years back)." I got a reply suggesting I should re-install OSX and see if that does the trick So I did.. Unfortunately now when i boot the computer, it either crashes before I get to the osx re-install screen, and in the rare instances that I do get to it, it asks me to select the disk to install OSX but no drives are available. So I've now gone from having a 95% functional to a basically unusable laptop.. Any thoughts as to how I can recover any functionality? [link] [comments] |
iTunes can't locate any of my song files after upgrading to High Sierra Posted: 25 Jul 2018 12:10 PM PDT Macbook Air 2012. I decided to update to HS, and now when I open iTunes, about 80% of the songs have the ! icon and when I click to play, it tells me that it can't locate the song. Before I upgraded, no issues. No files have been moved, nothing has been deleted. How can I get iTunes to re-locate all my songs without manually locating all 20k missing ones? This is so frustrating. Any ideas? Thank you! Late-2016 Macbook Pro keeps restarting Posted: 25 Jul 2018 12:09 PM PDT My Macbook pro has been restarting for the past few months now just in random and definitely the worst of times when I need to get work done or am trying to watch a movie. I took it to an Apple store a few months ago when it first started and the person reinstalled OSX on my machine and it is still restarting, but now it is restarting about 2 or 3 times per hour. Someone told me that I should update to High Sierra, but every time I try to update, it shuts off and restarts while trying to upgrade. Any tips would be much appreciated because my Macbook is basically unusable at the moment. [link] [comments] |
Upgrading our Server, Fusion Drive or SSD? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 08:16 AM PDT Can you back up a 1.2TB Fusion Drive to a 2TB Time Machine AND 2TB Carbon Copy Clone and still restore to the Fusion Drive if anything were to happen? We operate our business off a Mac mini Server. We are looking to upgrade to a Late 2014 Model. The server itself is not directly used, but the files are on a network for our employees. I enjoy the idea of the Fusion drive, keeping about 128gb of the most used info on a SSD thats ready to fly and having 2TB available for storage. However, my biggest concern is if you can back up the Fusion Drive (1.12TB) to a 2TB Time machine AND 2TB Carbon Copy Clone and still recover the mac from those back ups in case of a malfunction/incident. Also, would it just safer to place a 256 or 500gb SSD in and forget fusion drive altogether? I don't want to limit ourselves to 500gb of storage. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 11:56 AM PDT I got this mouse a little less than a month ago. Love all the gestures it can do on Mac. However for some reason the gestures configured in Logitech Options will stop working on the mouse. The mouse is no longer shown in Logitech Options app as well. But the mouse still works as a normal mouse. I have tried SO many trouble shooting steps with no luck (Logitech FAQ, forum solutions). The only way to fix the issue is to do a reboot of my Mac. FYI: the mouse works perfectly fine with a unifying device dongle. it might be worth noting I am also using AirPods with my mac. If anyone has any suggestions or similar issues please let me know. I have a few more days left to return the mouse to Amazon. I would really like to figure out the problem bc i love this mouse.. [link] [comments] |
iPhone 8 Completely Unrecognizable Posted: 25 Jul 2018 09:15 AM PDT Hey guys, I've got a weird problem with my iPhone 8 that I haven't been able to find a solution to anywhere. I was out yesterday using my phone as normal when it crashed and got stuck in the boot up sequence where the Apple logo would show for a while, then the display would change to a blank screen, then the apple logo would show again. This process continued for over an hour until I was able to get home, plug it into my Mac and iTunes told me I needed to update or restore the phone to get it to work again. I tried updating the phone and was told by iTunes that it couldn't be updated. Then iTunes stopped recognizing it altogether. I've tried recovery mode, DFU mode, switching out the cables and trying it on a mac and a PC. Nothing recognizes the phone. Even disk utility and system information on my mac don't display any indication that the phone is connected. When charged and turned on, the phone just displays the standard connect to iPhone screen. When the phone is powered off and I connect a lightning cable, it begins trying to boot up as normal which makes me think it's not an issue with the lightning connector either. Please help if you can, this issue is driving me nuts! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:30 PM PDT Is there such thing as an adapter where I can plug some headphones with a lightning cable into a device with a 3.5mm jack? I tried searching "female lightning to male 3.5mm" but nothing that came up was what I needed. [link] [comments] |
Ipad Mini 2 display getting the black screen of death but... Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:19 AM PDT Before having to result to going to the Apple Store, I'd thought I would at least ask here and see if its possible to pinpoint what may be the cause of the issue I'm having with my ipad mini 2. For some backstory, a few months back, my ipad mini was working normally then all of a sudden, when I went to wake up the ipad, i would get these lines going down the display as shown on this site: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/439549/White+Vertical+Lines+on+the+screen Having a flip case, I tried refreshing the screen by flipping the case on and off and it would suddenly go back to normal. This continued on for a while until it got worse to the point where there would be too many lines for me to see the home screen, etc. I would have some luck if I kept refreshing the screen to the point where I would get the home screen with no obstructions. At this point, I would keep my screen on and have no inactivity turn off the screen so I could just use it without needing to constantly refresh but the problem with the lines and screen becoming blurry would come back. Eventually this evolved to the point where when waking up the ipad mini, it would show some lines and then fade to black (not all black, can still see some backlit black if that makes sense). As of today, this is the status of my ipad mini, when turning it on, it will flash some white light and then fade to black. With my time with my iPad, I haven't dropped it or anything (I did buy it used but the owner didn't have any drops with it, etc) and it was working normally. I guess this weird behavior started happening when I installed a screen protector. I don't know the physics entirely but perhaps the screen protector could be applying some weird pressure on the screen, causing some issues? Again, just a random thought. I am fully expecting that if I brought this into an Apple store that I'll probably be charged a hefty sum and it would probably be better to just get a new one, but I was planning on opening up the ipad mini and see if there is a loose connection and or a part I can replace? When I had to constantly refresh the screen to get it working, the battery levels were normal, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Would really appreciate any feedback possible; thanks for taking time to read my post Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Trouble using Apple Business Manager (This Apple ID can't be used to make purchases) Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:34 PM PDT I work at a place that gives users iPads. We have users create and Apple account using their work email account and sign into the iPads with that -- this way, if they leave the company, we can use their email to sign them out of the iPad in case they are not available. Recently, I found out that it's not possible for a user to create anymore Apple accounts using their work email, likely because that domain name has been black-listed for having so many users with @companyname.com email addresses. Then, I found out about Apple Business accounts and I signed us up and provided the necessary Company info, got approved/verified, and now I've gotten the account initially set up where I'm an administrator/manager and then I set up a second admin account for my other IT guy. So now we can get started giving users iPads again. I started out by adding a new "staff" account for a user I want to give an iPad to. I created a sign-in and added their name and email and they were able to sign into the iPad with that new Apple account but now they can't download anything from the Appstore as it says stuff like, "The app could not be installed" and "This Apple ID can't be used to make purchases". Going through the Apple Business Manager Help, I have become quite confused on how to actually use this properly. The help explains that Apple Business Manager is a web-based portal for IT admins to deploy iOS devices, which makes sense to me. However, when I read about what a Managed Apple ID is, it says its for employees who sign in and manage functions of Apple Business Manager and NOT to be used for iCloud or any other Apple ID accounts (such as App Store). So it's like it's saying that this is for deploying and managing Apple devices, but that none of the accounts can use the device for anything. I also see an option for adding MDM servers, and we do have an MDM solution but I can't add a server without first providing reseller information, but I don't even have any. At this point, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. I just wanted to allow a user to great an Apple ID with their work email. How am I supposed to do this?? [link] [comments] |
