The MacBook Pro, the Core i9 and a journey into Intel's Ark

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 05:54 PM PDT

The new MacBook Pros, for the first time ever, allow the user to choose a Core i9 CPU. EHMAGERD. But what exactly is a Core i9? How is it different from a Core i7? To answer this, we must take a look at the lineup of Intel CPUs, both present and past.

Let's take a look at Intel's 7th generation i7 CPU lineup for laptops. Specifically, I will only include the 45-watt chips, as seen in the MacBook Pro. (From ark.intel.com)

    SKU Base Clock Turbo Clock
    i7-7920HQ 3.1 GHz 4.1 GHz
    i7-7820HQ/i7-7820HK 2.9 GHz 3.9 GHz
    i7-7700HQ 2.8 GHz 3.8 GHz

Now, let's take a look at the 8th Generation i7 CPU lineup. (Not including the models with RX Vega M graphics or the B series with a 65-watt TDP, only the regular 45-watt laptop CPUs)

    SKU Base Clock Turbo Clock
    ??? ??? ???
    i7-8850H 2.6 GHz 4.3 GHz
    i7-8750H 2.2 GHz 4.1 GHz

There seems to be a missing piece. Historically, Intel has had 3 tiers in their 45W i7 CPU lineup. The 6th generation, for example, has 7 SKUs, but those can be broken into 3 tiers, each with 2 or 3 similar chips, differing in the inclusion (or lack thereof) of the Iris Pro integrated GPUs, or Intel vPro. The 7th gen lineup has 4 unique SKUs, but the 7820HQ and the 7820 HK are the same chip, except the HK doesn't include vPro. But the 8th generation is the first to not include a top-tier SKU.

Correction - the 8th generation is the first to not include a top tier Core i7 CPU.

    SKU Base Clock Turbo Clock
    i9-8950HK 2.9 GHz 4.8 GHz
    i7-8850H 2.6 GHz 4.3 GHz
    i7-8750H 2.2 GHz 4.1 GHz

The i9 is a perfect fit - from the SKU number (x9xx), to the proportional jump in performance, to the matching core count and TDP... The i9, then, is what, a year ago, would be called an i7.

    What does this mean?

    1. The MacBook Pro with a Core i9 is seen as a completely new thing, where in reality it is just a rebadged i7. It's like if Apple were to release the 256 GB iPhone 8 as the iPhone X. (Not blaming Apple here, they don't control Intel's horrible product naming conventions)

    2. Because of the "Core i9" moniker, people expect a large performance delta between the i9 and the i7, when in reality, the i9 is the equivalent of the top-tier i7 Apple has offered since the Sandy Bridge days (Source: everymac.com) Apple has offered 3 different SKUs of i7 CPUs in the 15-inch MacBook Pro since early 2011, and this is the first time since that they haven't.

    3. Maybe, because of these high expectations, the whole "i9 is slower!!1!!" deal is being blown out of proportion. Or maybe, if the i9 is really just an i7 like the old days, it's even worse than people are making it out to be.

    Thoughts?

EDIT: It just occurred to me that what would have been a real game changer (like people are making the i9 out to be) would be Xeon chips. Before you say "that's not possible" - Dell offers Xeons as an option for the Precision 15 5000 laptops (essentially an XPS 15 chassis with workstation class components). And why not a Quadro (fine, a FirePro) GPU and ECC memory while we're at it for a MacBook Pro...Pro?

Volta has been updated to allow greater than 45 Watts draw

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 05:15 PM PDT

Just an FYI for those that use it.

A quick cinebench test has allowed me to hit 1100cb by limiting my 2018 15" 2.6ghz i7 to 55 watts, running at a solid 3.4Ghz under full load.

45 watts has me at about 1020 and down at 3.1Ghz.

I recently went from 0 Apple products to four in one day and am feeling a little overwhelmed...

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 09:02 PM PDT

    Hello!

After getting some gifts from a client, I now have AirPods watch 3 iPad 9.7 regular 128GB and iPhone X 256. My former set up was a Microsoft surface, windows phone and Microsoft band three. I wouldn't call myself a fan boy, but I just like a closed ecosystem. I have three major concerns/questions that Apple support haven't been able to help me with and was wondering for some feedback here... I am not sure if this is the correct sub, but I figured it was a good place to start :)

New MacBook Pro - I am currently buying a 13 inch i7 with the touch bar. I can't find information online, but it seems it is only the i9 with the over heating? I have seen comments that contradict this and am a little concerned with dropping that much money on something that has to sit on a cooled pad!

Calendar - I've deleted the calendar (prefer to use outlook) but it still shows up in my settings menu, and I get notifications from it on my phone and watch... I've tried installing it and using it, deleting again etc, but basically I want it off my phone and watch and it's stuck there.

Watch - what I like, and have been doing for many years, is to have all notifications on my phone off, and to have my watch handle everything. I generally like a vibrate and the screen to wake up. I have tried everything but can't figure it out. Also coupled with the fact that you have silent, do not disturb and theatre mode, I can't quite tell the difference between them. Also, I seem to have my screen sometimes light up, sometimes not. The vibrate recently changed from one strong one to one weak one. Now, I'm mainly using this for fitness and sleep tracking (genuinely baffling how they don't do this natively) so I'm not too concerned, but I would like it to just work. Also, the watch is the most complicated consumer product I've ever owned... sorry!

I feel that all this has been designed for people who have been with them for a few generations. Absolutely unintuitive if this is your first time with an Apple product(s)!

Not looking to upset here people here with my light criticism, generally I'm absolutely loving all of this new tech. Genuinely life changing by having good mobile zoom, Skype and basecamp clients,!!!

iOS App for researching self behavior?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 09:05 PM PDT

Does anyone know a good app that can help me analyze my sleep hours, nutrition, exercise, and mood? So far I've been using Fitnesspal, Bedtime, and a simple mood survey app, but I want to be able to add all the data up and compare it so I could identify what factors affect how I feel.

Apologies if this is the wrong sub, I'm know the request is a shot in the dark so even just a redirection or recommendation on what or where to search would mean the world to me. I appreciate it, thanks.

Stores in my country stopped advertising the 2018 macbook pro

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 05:37 AM PDT

I live in israel, and stores, official retailers who had 2018 MBP ads all over them, now just keep it quiet and dont even offer the i7 i9 models anymore on their website, where before it was clearly there. do you think it has something to do with the throttling issue?

iOS has the equivalent of macOS “right click > Open With”

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 07:40 PM PDT

I was so confused why all my reddit links only opened in safari, after trying a quick internet search which ended in no answer. I decided to start trying different solutions in device settings, Reddit app settings, etc. I couldn't find any, but then I tried 3D Touch! Saw the options and then tried multiple select and watch outcome then select the other and watch outcome, and figured it out. At some point I must have done "open in safari", now all links open correctly in app.

TLDR; When you 3D Touch a link for example in a messages and swipe up. The last option you selected becomes the default.

    Edit: fixed link and spelling

    Replacement for Moves app?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 04:42 PM PDT

Moves, the app that maps your movements throughout the day, is shutting down at the end of July. Whether or not you can continue to use it offline without syncing to their servers remains to be seen but until that's confirmed I've been looking for a replacement.

I use the app to passively track my movement throughout the day, particularly short cycling trips that don't warrant anything like Strava, so I've been looking for similar to both map my day and log my kilometres cycled.

I've been using Gyroscope recently which seems good for it too but a lot of the mapping is stuck behind a paywall and I'm not sure how accurate it's going to be once it stops being able to import data from Moves. Any suggestions for different apps for those who use Moves?

Is the Apple Maps Update an improvement?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 08:59 AM PDT

Is the new Maps update in CA actually an improvement? I have seen some screenshots, and I did some comparisons myself, and I really didn't notice any big changes, but I'm not familiar with CA, so I can't really tell. The problem I always had with Apple Maps was that searching for POI's wouldn't turn up the results that it should. It looks like they are still using Yelp, so if it's not on Yelp, it's not on the map. So what is it that their new base map actually improves. Is it just more detailed building shapes and shadings for landscaping features? That's not really useful if I'm trying to get directions to a point of interest that's not on the map.

Also, I have submitted several updates to the map, like removing a few closed down restaurants, or moving a building's map marker, and they always say that my update has been published, but I still can find it in the search, in the wrong location. Anyone else notice the same?

    Auto-share family photos on iCloud

    Posted: 23 Jul 2018 03:05 PM PDT

My wife and I currently share a single iCloud account for iCloud photos. We like to see photos of our kids and family instantaneously without uploading any photos. She does have her own iCloud for iPhone backups.

If she uses her own iCloud and we share with family, is there anyway to automatically upload all our photos to one album without her clicking the photo and sharing to the correct album?
