Just got my MacBook Pro 2016 back after keyboard refresh and not only top case was replaced

So it took them 5 days to Fix random B key issue, I got 2017 top case and as a bonus I got NEW logic board as well.

It's essentially new laptop, except screen of course.

Supper happy, as I also had small dent on top case.

    How is your repair going?

Purchasing my first MacBook tomorrow! Any should know tips about macOS or in general regarding macbooks?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:11 PM PDT

I'm getting the MacBook Pro 13' inch non-touch bar as a daily driver for studying and research. I'm aware there's probably another one coming out later this year but I doubt it would offer any real benefit towards a student user that'd be worth delaying laptop access for. I'm aware of Pages but I'm scared of possible complications since the standard accepted format for uni is word. If there are any tips, especially targeted towards students, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Edit New questions: 1) Any recommendations for an email client? I usually manage my emails through multiple tabs in chrome but I feel like there's a better way. 2) I've used chrome and have many bookmarks as well as a few extensions, is it worth going to safari or should I stick with chrome?

    Did I choose wisely?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:55 PM PDT

I'm starting a new job at the end of the month. A few days ago my new boss asked if I wanted a Mac or PC. Mac, thanks (I've only owned Mac Minis till now and I love them)! Then I get a text..."ordering your laptop now, 13" or 15"?" Uh.....

My new job will be traveling up to 50% so I was leaning towards the 13. However, I will be giving a lot of tech demos, possibly at places that don't have big-ass TVs on the wall, and will probably need to run a Windows VM or two. So with all that in mind, I chose the 15 (I had to respond right away so the order could go in on time).

Am I going to regret lugging it around or appreciate the extra power/screen (both?)?

    Considering MBP 2012

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:23 PM PDT

Thinking of buying a 2012 macbook pro unibody (i5) and am curious about the compatibility of additional ram and an SSD that I would add to the machine in the event that a 6 year old laptop quits shortly thereafter

In other words, could I transfer these additional macbook parts to my gaming pc in the event the macbook doesn't last?

My plan is to buy a 2012 macbook pro in good condition for as cheap as possible, then upgrade to 8-16 gb ram and a small SSD as cheaply as possible

Currently have a mechanical hard drive and 8gb of RAM. Current PC Mobo is : ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3 ATX Intel Motherboard (LGA1155)

Also, opinions on this as being practical/cost effective? I know BestBuy has had some really good deals on the i5 128gb macbook air (~700)

Dead pixels on 2017 MBP w/ Touch Bar – am I being too nitpicky? (Photos Inside)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 04:35 PM PDT

A few photos trying to show the scale: https://imgur.com/a/VKZCce1

I have two (what I assume are) dead pixels on my rMBP screen that are driving me ABSOLUTELY NUTS but wanted some honest opinions here on whether I'm being anal or not....

I assume that for a dead "pixel" to be visible on a retina screen, it needs to be technically more than one pixel grouped together and therefore a legitimate problem, correct? I've briefly skimmed some old threads and seen references to "stuck" pixels, but these have been there quite a while.

Will the genius bar laugh/shrug me out of the store? Or can I walk in there with my AppleCare+ and get some compassion (and a new screen)?

    Thanks friends!

    Dark mode obsession

    Dark mode obsession

What with the recently announced dark mode in the soon to be released macOS Mojave, it seems that everyone is jumping on the #darkmode bandwagon!

Heck even the google app snapseed has just got a #darkmode

Upgrade on Early 2015 13” MacBook Air SSD

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:45 PM PDT

So, I have an Early 2015 13" MacBook Air with a 1.6 processor, and 120GB SSD, that I got when I first started college. I was very excited to just get my first laptop so I kind of overlooked a lot of important purchasing details at the time. I really should have gone for the Pro as opposed to the Air, but that's neither here nor there at this point. So I've been looking into upgrading the RAM (which I've found out isn't a possibility with this model sadly) and upgrading my SSD something more worth while (400gb - 1TB range). I'd like to be able to put one of the Samsung 970 SSD in there, and I'm not sure if that's possible as all the posts I've found are from 2015/16. Is there anyone way I could use this SSD, or is there one that is comparable that would work? I've found other SSDs on OWC that work, but lack the reading and writing power of the Samsung.

Can I use the HomePod as a speaker with my MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:59 AM PDT

I've been looking at getting speakers for my desk, since while the MBP's speakers are decent, they're not perfect.

I was also thinking about getting a HomePod for streaming music while studying/cleaning the house/etc and thought, "couldn't the HomePod just work as a speaker?"

I've googled it, and it seems possible; but what's the latency on it? Is it purely for music or can I watch movies, play games (rocksmith really) and have it work well, or should I get speakers and a HomePod?

    Thanks!

Is new Macbook 12" more powerful than Macbook Pro 2012 Retina

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:34 AM PDT

My Macbook Pro is a 1st-gen Retina 2012. I'm thinking of finally upgrading, but I'm fine with its capabilities: mostly writing with occasional logic pro x and photoshop. I'm wondering if the Macbook 12" (non-pro) could work as a replacement, excluding differences in ports.

    Silver MacBook Pro

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:47 AM PDT

Have a space grey 2016 MacBook Pro and I plan to upgrade to a 2017 MacBook. Am I the only one that thinks the silver looks much better? The space grey looks good for like the first week, but then it looks kinda dull, whereas I think the silver one looks really sharp.

    What do you guys think?

Anyone know the cost of fixing a macbook 15" touchbar out of warranty?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:40 AM PDT

I just recently found out about this and I'm 4 months out of warranty... I never dropped the laptop or anything and it just happened. I'm devastated and from what it looks like, it's gonna cost me $600+ and that is way too much for something I took deeply care of. There's no scratches or anything, I just turned on the laptop one day and it showed up like this... Does anyone have any experience with something like this out of warranty? https://imgur.com/gallery/7u5blkq
