Catalina upgrade on 2010 Mac Pro yields only one working monitor Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:13 AM PST I have a 2010 Mac Pro (5,1) that I just upgraded to Catalina using Dosdude's patch. The upgrade seemed to go fine, except that now only one of my two monitors is working. I have tried unplugging each in turn, and the other works, so I know it's not a hardware problem (plus they worked fine prior to the upgrade). The video card is a Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of VRAM, and both 30" monitors are connected to the card via active Apple mini-Displayport to DVI adapters. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
freeNAS, Carbon Copy Cloner, and macOS Catalina Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:51 PM PST Hi! CCC begins the comparing process, and before it can get to the the process of transferring/deleting files on the RAID, the server disconnects and I cannot re-connect until I reboot the machine. The machine will only reboot by holding down the power button, too. Trying to shutdown using the Apple logo on the top left causes the machine to freeze. This is only happening on macOS Catalina. Works fine on Mojave machines. I've already tried enabling netBIOS, but my issue was never connecting to the server, it's backing it up. Anyone have ideas I could try? If you need any more info, let me know. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:57 PM PST I have a 1 TB SSD external drive. I erased it and formatted it to GUID and APFS. So now it is a 1 TB SSD GUID, with one APFS container named Container disk3, and one APFS volume named Private. I added two more APFS volumes to Container disk3: Time Machine, and Archive. Then I added two exFAT partitions to the SSD: Guest 1 (64 GB) and Guest 2 (128 GB). So now I have a 1 TB SSD disk, with one 64 GB partition, one 128 GB partition, and the remaining storage as one APFS container (within which is three volumes). The APFS container should be about 800 GB (1 TB - 128 GB - 64 GB). But it is only about 615 GB. The difference is going to 128 GB of APFS storage that Apple is calling a "physical store." I don't know what this is, how or why it was created, how to manage it. Can someone explain? Screenshot of my SSD: https://imgur.com/a/r9UbbmW Update: moving Time Machine to a non-APFS partition; Terminal does not show the "physical store," but I am still curious why it is shown in Disk Utility and why it is 128 GB [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:57 PM PST So I was attempting to delete the X11 file that tends to stay when upgrading to Catalina. I used the commands: launchctl unload /Library/LaunchAgents/org.macosforge.xquartz.startx.plist && \sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macosforge.xquartz.privileged_startx.plist && \sudo rm -rf /opt/X11* /Library/Launch*/org.macosforge.xquartz.* /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app /etc/*paths.d/*XQuartz && \sudo pkgutil --forget org.macosforge.xquartz.pkg && \rm -rf ~/.serverauth* && rm -rf ~/.Xauthorit* && rm -rf ~/.cache && rm -rf ~/.rnd && \rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/org.macosforge.xquartz.X11 && rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/X11 Which didnt seem to work, and so I used: cd X11 sudo rm -rf ./* cd .. ; sudo rm X11 I restarted my macbook air after this. EDIT: I also don't have any backups. I have all my applications still, but all the files in my downloads, documents, and desktop folders are gone. The applications have also reset themselves. If anyone one knows what to do now I would appreicate it, and any methods of backing up data they'd like to share. And how the hell did this command delete all my files. Oh and, HAPPY NEW YEAR. Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:17 PM PST I have an old iMac that was given to me by my cousin. She can't remember the email and password. While trying to reinstall OS Capitan it's prompting me to put an email and password. I tried using mine but the installation won't go through. I think I have to use the OG email and password for the installation to start. Anyone knows how to remove the OG email and password? [link] [comments]

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:01 PM PST I found this bug after upgrading my MacBook to Catalina. I have 3 input languages: English, Chinese and Russian - ordered like that in System settings, same on the top menu bar icon. After switching input source about 20-30 times the order will change to: Chinese, English, Russian. 1. Did somebody has the same problem? 2. Any ideas how to fix it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:14 PM PST I'm trying to download Mojave to install on an older iMac that has it's HD wiped. I'm trying to download a bootable copy from my laptop that's running Catalina. When I try to download form the app store, it says I'm already running an updated version and won't let me download Mojave. Is there any way around this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:09 AM PST Hi, I have an iMac 5K 2017 with the maxed out CPU (quad core i7 4.2GHz) and GPU (AMD Radeon Pro 580 8GB), 16GB RAM (8+8GB) and 512GB PCIe SSD running macOS Catalina 10.15.2 and I have recently formatted it and set it up as new from scratch. My problem is, that always macOS boots a little bit slow, and for sure much slower compared to Windows. For example, I have an old Toshiba laptop from 2013 that costed 700€ back then, with a mediocre i5 CPU & Nvidia GPU, 6GB RAM and a samsung 860evo SSD running Windows 10 and that system goes from completely shut down to opening Chrome for example, in just 10 seconds! My iMac on the other hand needs 30-40 seconds to boot up. I have encrypted the startup SSD with filevaoult and I know that may slow down the boot time a bit, but even some months ago that I didn't had filevault on, the iMac needed a lot of time to boot up compared to other way cheaper and overall slower windows machines! Anyone knows why Macs are so slow to boot even when they have so good specs like my iMac? Edit: Of course I don't have bloatware or other useless software installed on my iMac and the only apps I have set to start with the system are some Adobe auto update software and iStat Menus! And the iMac was exactly the same slow even when I just have installed the macOS without any other software. Also I have done SMC and NVRAM resets and I have verify the SSD from disk utility (no errors of course). [link] [comments]
Best OS upgrade choice for MBP Late 13 Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:21 AM PST I've got the base model MBP Late 13 (13 inch) running MacOS high Sierra and I am thinking about upgrading OS, any one with the same model laptop can advice if I should go to Mojave or Catalina and how it runs on the device or should I just stay put? Not a must for me to upgrade but I'm just considering the software upgrade to catch-up on features I'm missing out but it's not too big a deal if it means I get the best and a smoothest experience on high Sierra. Battery life is currently crap, lasts about 3-4 hours maybe but I use it plugged in mostly anyways. Considering replacing the battery but idk if it's worth it as I'll probably be upgrading next summer during the back to school promo. Appreciate any advice on this matter, thank you. Mac calendar apps - list view of events for the entire week Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:57 AM PST I used to use geektool for this list of events but icalbuddy doesn't work with Catalina. I'm looking for a way to see a list of events for the entire week like I could with geektool. I know Fantastical2 offers this but I don't love the $50 price. [link] [comments]

Issues with sleep/clamshell in Catalina (hard rebooting itself) Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST I have recently upgraded to the 16" MBP from 2017 13" MBP. I am in the habit of signing out and closing clamshell when i leave the office for the day. Upon my return each morning, or the next time I open the clamshell, i receive a CPU architecture error signifying that my machine has rebooted. This has happened every morning since i've had the new device. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I have noticed some similar issues, but nothing exact. Also, most users with similar issues are using the 13" model. TL;DR 2019 16" MBP is rebooting whenever it's in clamshell mode for transit. [link] [comments] |
