Weird blue screen on 2012 iMac Posted: 19 Jun 2018 04:18 PM PDT My 2012 iMac started showing signs of its age today, with a blue screen overlay appearing. I've restarted in safe mode and the blue overlay still appeared, I am currently running a Apple Hardware test to see if there's anything wrong. I updated to the latest High Sierra release last night but everything worked fine after the update, used it all morning and about an hour ago this happened. Here's the weird screen for reference. Anyone have any ideas? Edit: computer is still usable, just this appears over everything EDIT 2: FIXED, hard booted (holding power button) during the Apple Hardware Test, it's back to normal now. MB Pro Randomly Freezing and Crashing Posted: 19 Jun 2018 07:37 PM PDT I'm working with a Late 2015, 15-inch model and running High Sierra (.13.5) and this problem only started up after I made the mistake of upgrading. It happens at least once a day. I can't even downgrade because I'm scared that my computer will freeze up and crash when I try to do so. Steps I've taken:
My other big problem is that I can't submit a crash report to Apple even though I'm sharing Diagnostics because these events don't seem to register as crashes! I've looked through the crash logs and there's no record of the anomalies. A breakdown of the event: I'll be doing something on my computer (watching videos seems to trigger it more often than not but it is in no way restricted to that) when the screen will suddenly turn black while the backlight is still on. All sound will stop and the only key that'll respond is the power button. If I don't forcefully shut my computer down (which I stopped doing because I wanted to see if in that case a crash would be logged) then the fans will increase in speed slightly (nowhere near jet-taking-off levels though) and then it'll power down. Has anyone else been having this problem since upgrading from 13.4? [link] [comments] |
Apple Diagnostics Reference Code PPF003, fan issues Posted: 19 Jun 2018 07:20 PM PDT I saw today on my Profile Manager server in iStat Menus the temperatures and CPU usage were insanely high, and when I started troubleshooting the processes consuming all that CPU time just soft of vanished--all system stuff, BTW. This is a Mac that's only there for Profile Manager and occasionally as a NetInstall server and it's on a freaking freezing dressing room converted to network/server room, so seeing 99ºC readings got me off my butt very quick and down there. A little more inspection, software first, I saw there were no readings anymore for the fan speed on iStat Menus, nor it seemed to be able to control it anymore, in fact, the fan didn't felt like it were working at old--though at the touch the system didn't feel very hot either, but it's aluminum and the room is really cold, that's hardly a scientific test--that's hardly a test at all for that matter. 😅 I reset the system's controller and the parameter RAM and still no luck, the air blowing out of the back, which is actually oriented to the front, in the server rack shelf where the Mac minis live in. I know it should be blasting hot air over there because over the last few months Apple's software has been so buggy that has kept the system at full processing power over some silly infinite-loop or something not even worth CPU time; I've been watching the system very close for unwanted LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents that slip through, like Microsoft's; but in the end it was Apple's own mess (mostly) that got the system running hot for long periods of time until I interceded. I found error codes PPF001, PPF003 and PPF004 are all related to fan issues, I don't want to take it to the local service shop because it isn't even official, it's Apple-authorized but not Apple's and they waaay overcharge for everything. Once I wanted to replace an iMac's HDD and the dude started listing charges instead of giving me a number, you know you're to a bad start when they do this, it's a clear sign of their intentions--he started with the evaluation fist, a 100USD (currency conversion at the time) check that would only serve to cover their asses if they did something wrong then he was about to list the next item but I stopped him right there, thanked him anyway and walked out. Since then, I've done all of the upgrades myself. From what I can gather this could be a temperature sensor issue, unlikely since they all seem to be working or a cable that somehow got disconnected, also weird on a tightly packed system (already changed the HDD for an SSD), so that leaves me with actual fan failure, before opening the system I'd like to find out what these service codes mean, I don't want to open it twice doubling my chances to misplaces those tiny screws. I'm such a scatterbrain it comes second nature to me or like breathing. Do I need to wait until the eBay-purchased month-long-delivery replacement fan get here to open it or do I reseat the cables and cold-blast it with compressed air right now? If you any of you have experience as Apple Service Technicians, the official ones, I really value your input, thanks! [link] [comments] |
I have hundreds of crash reports in my analytics data. Is this normal? Posted: 19 Jun 2018 04:16 PM PDT iPhone 8+. Latest non-beta iOS version. Every one I checked came from the last couple of weeks. Some apps are generating dozens, others less so. Is this normal? I'm not very tech-savvy and I've never really looked at this list before. [link] [comments] |
Touch ID inconsistent on iPhone 7 Plus Posted: 19 Jun 2018 09:49 PM PDT So I bought my iPhone around 8 months ago. Apple replaced the phone with a new one around 2 months ago because I broke the screen. The touch ID was extremely consistent on my old iPhone, but not on the new one. I tried all the tips that I could find on the internet but I couldn't find the solution. Normally, I would have to enter the password 2-3 times out of 5 times when I unlock my iPhone. Can anyone help? Is this a hardware issue or am I doing something wrong that causes this problem? Thanks! I do have apple care. [link] [comments] |
Need help with iPad hogging bandwidth Posted: 19 Jun 2018 09:43 PM PDT A family iPad in our house is using a lot of bandwidth. We have a crappy DSL connection, but all we do on it is watch occasional youtube videos, look at news articles, or look at facebook. Nothing crazy, but it still uses a ton of resources (for our crappy speeds). I need to be able to set a limit on the bandwidth of it, nothing crazy, just something so that it doesn't kill our network when a youtube video is loading on it. Is there ANY way I can do that without needing a mac? The iPad is the only apple device we have. I have heard of using xCode and enabling developer options, so if I can do that without using a mac, i would gladly do it. But I don't think I can. If you have any apps I can use to manage the bandwidth (i.e. some similar to NetLimiter on Windows) PLEASE tell me! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:37 PM PDT I installed something that it turns out was not as safe as I thought and now I think I have a virus. When on google chrome no matter what website I'm on a tab pops up trying to get me to install adobe flash player. I copied the URL of one of the pop ups. http://dcmgd.englishpowder.win/lp/d73a5cac/?n=1170048911 When I try to google for help a new tab keeps popping up with some apple support that looks fake, like this one. https://security-assists.com/support-for-apple.html I'm not a tech savvy person so I do not know what to do about this and would really appreciate some help. Posted: 19 Jun 2018 08:58 PM PDT I purchased a movie from the iTunes store as usual (I have bought dozens of movies, app and songs from iTunes before). From my iPhones and iPad (devices), I can stream the movie. However, when I tried to download it, I kept getting error that the TV app is "Unable to Download Movie" (Screenshot: https://imgur.com/MAWYjii) I tried everything: - Rebooted both devices - Kill the TV app - Sign-in and out from iCloud Nothing works. This one movie simply cannot be downloaded on any of my iOS devices. Any advice? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Jun 2018 03:25 PM PDT I bought a MacBook Pro in the fall of 2015 and haven't had any problems with it until about 3 days ago when it wouldn't charge at all. Called Apple Support and we went through some things and found out my battery capacity is 0. The other weird thing is that my time and date went to January 1, 2017 and midnight. When we went to get the shipping to send it in, the guy said it'd cost over $600 for a new battery and service to change it out. Doesn't this seem way too expensive for a replacement battery? Has anyone else had an experience like this? [link] [comments] |
iPod Touch notes app not working Posted: 19 Jun 2018 07:06 PM PDT I have an iPod Touch 5th generation with IOS 9.3.5 and the notes app doesn't seem to work. The app opens fine but I'm just taken to an empty folders screen with no buttons on the bottom to make a new folder. When I hit share and then hit notes it says I need to go to notes and upgrade it even though it's never told me to do this before. When I go to notes to try to update it I'm left with the same blank screen. I've tried resetting settings and after restarting and going to notes it does say I can update but when I do nothing happens. I think this is a glitch because I've owned this iPod for around 3 years and it has never asked for an update and notes has worked fine. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know it would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Tech help needed getting an iCloud Calendar on an Android phone. Posted: 19 Jun 2018 06:52 PM PDT How to get iCloud Calendar on an Android phone? I just started a new job and they run a schedule for work projects through a calendar on iCloud. I haven't used anything with even an Apple logo on it since the mid 90's and I'm not that good with smart phones in general. My issue is I found an app that claims to sync the calendars with iCloud named "iSync Calendar Cloud" and I go in and it tells me I needed two-factor authentication. Since I have no Apple products after I was able to set up an account, I can only do the older two-step verification. Either way the app and the Apple web site says I needed to set up an app-specific password and I did. Now for the problem. The password doesn't work, my password doesn't work in the app because it needs that app-specific one which doesn't work. And I have tried making a new one and it didn't work either. Any suggestions because between two hours at home and an hour and a half in the Verizon store and best I have been able to do is just get an account set up. Btw the only way to do that from my phone was to follow a link through the gmail app from the mail I got from being invited to the iCloud Calendar. If I tried to go to it from my browser all I got was unsupported platform messages. [link] [comments] |
Time Machine - "The volume is the wrong format for a backup." Posted: 19 Jun 2018 06:33 PM PDT I backed up my previous computer to an external hard drive, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I am trying to move the "Backups.backupdb" folder to either my new computer (formatted as APFS) or to my NAS (formatted BTRFS). When I try to move the folder, I receive the message "The volume is the wrong format for a backup." How can I move my Time Machine backup to a different location? [link] [comments] |
Accessing old iPod touch question Posted: 19 Jun 2018 02:46 PM PDT I have an old iPod (7 ish years) and tried to type in my Apple ID password. When I did this I got a 2 factor authentification numbers on my phone. There was no where to type it in since my iPod was only asking for the Apple ID password. Is there no way for me to get my Apple ID to connect with my iPod if it continues to ask for 2 factor authentification? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2018 10:46 AM PDT I found an iPhone in the road the other day and I would like to return it to it's owner or at least notify them so they can stop checking behind sofa cushions. The problem is that the screen is completely destroyed. The body of the phone is bent as well. I assumed it was toast but then it started ringing but no way to answer it. I don't think there is much to be saved but I could give the owner what I have. I don't think they have "find my phone" turned on because I hung out at an isolated bar near where I found it for a few hours with it plugged in, again it rang a few times. So I pulled out the sim card and its T-Mobile. I called the company and they said to go by a store. I go by a T-Mobile store and they took the sim info and then called me later saying they can't find the owner. I think they were being lazy and there has to be a way to find the owner. Would apple have a record of the owner based on IMEI? What other options do I have? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Push notifications going directly to iPad but not iPhone Posted: 19 Jun 2018 05:18 PM PDT So this may be a question for SmartThings, but I have a suspicion it's an Apple thing. I installed a Samsung SmartThings hub at home and some sensors as a mini-burglar alarm system. It's supposed to send a push notification when the sensors are tripped and at first I thought it wasn't working because nothing was coming through to my phone, but then I checked my iPad and it had all the notifications on it. Is there a setting I'm missing to prioritize one device over another for push notifications? I've checked several times and all possible notification settings are turned on for my phone. My devices are an iPad 2 and an iPhone 7+, both updated to the most recent iOS, if that makes any difference. [link] [comments] |

Installing a new graphics card on Mavericks - Mac Pro 1,1? Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:03 PM PDT First time posting here so maybe this isn't the right subreddit, but if anyone here has updated their Mac Pro 1,1 to Mavericks with Tiamo's boot.efi, what graphics card did you install? i'm considering the Geforce 8800GT 512MB but want to make certain it will solve the graphics issues that currently plague 10.9.5 (incessant flickering on many apps including Safari and Logic Pro X) [link] [comments] |
iPad disconnects of WiFi instantly Posted: 19 Jun 2018 12:57 PM PDT Hi guys, I bought a new iPad and I can't get into my wifi network. MacBook Air (Early 2014) won’t power on Posted: 19 Jun 2018 10:20 AM PDT Hi everyone, I have a Macbook Air model A1466. Yesterday I went to use it, and it would not respond at all when I tried to power it on. I plugged it in thinking maybe the battery was dead and left it to charge all night. It responded properly to the charger (first green light, then to amber to charge). It did not show that it was fully charged this morning (light still amber), and still would not power on. It responded to a SMC reset - light flashed to green then back to amber when releasing buttons, but still will not power on. There are no chimes or fans or anything starting when I try to power it on. We had 2 very humid and hot days the past 2 days, could that be the culprit? The laptop was not used during these humid days but it was still in the house. Is there anything I can do to remedy this or has anybody found a way to fix this? I have brought the laptop to work with me today to be in air conditioning in hopes that if humidity and condenstion was the issue that this will dry it out. Any help is greatly appreiciated!
