Picked up a 2006 MacBook and having issues with constant freezing up on fresh install Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:03 PM PDT Picked up this machine and the seller had told me it just needed a battery and charger. After I obtained these items the laptop booted into the setup assistant for OS X tiger where it would hang up and I would have to reboot the machine the hard way to try to get further. Finally I got the thing to the desktop after reinstalling the os again from the original cd. It continues to hang nonstop and I can not get it to load any of the programs. It will boot up to the desktop but within a minute or two it becomes totally crippled and will just sit there with whosever I have pulled up and won't even let me close anything or shut down forcing me to do a hard shut down. I believe it might be the hard drive but I am not well rehearsed with Macs. I ran a disk diagnostic and the drive in it checks out fine. What else could this be? The ram? Or a total main board failure? I picked this thing up just to play with for 40 dollars but it might go to my scrap corner so I can try something a couple years newer with less issues. Trying to format a USB drive but it keeps failing. Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:00 PM PDT I created a bootable USB drive of Chrome OS on a 32GB SanDisk USB 3.0 flash drive. I have an A1502 13" MacBook Pro. Chrome OS doesn't really support this quite yet, you sorta need a dedicated device for it. I just wanted to try it. So I created the drive with Etcher. No problems there, the test it runs checked out okay. Ended up not really booting. So I'm just trying to format it back to normal storage, but every time I try I get the error saying, "MediaKit reports not enough space on device for requested operation." Any ideas? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 05:00 PM PDT Its as if someone is plugging in and unplugging my phone rapidly, but it has to be a software/hardware issue relating to my laptop/phone. Specs: * Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, mid-2015) macOS Sierra 10.12.6

Macbook gets hot during low activity Posted: 06 Jun 2018 07:59 PM PDT I only have a couple applications running but my computer gets hot and I can hear the fan going... This happens all the time. Sometimes when I'm playing music on Spotify the fan goes crazy and then I have to quit the application. How do I fix this? I already have looked at the Activity Monitor several times and everything is always on very low CPU percentages. I am using a Macbook Pro that I bought in Fall 2014. [link] [comments] |

How to fix apple headphones (for iPhone 6s)? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 07:27 PM PDT Man I must have gone through like 8 pairs. My newest ones don't even work; they aren't wireless. Sound doesn't come out from both the left and right pod. Man I wish I knew how to fix it. I've tried cleaning out the wax but even with it gone, it still doesn't work. Ik it's a headphone problem because it doesn't work no matter what device I plug it into. I'm getting desperate. They don't even last me an entire year. [link] [comments] |
How do you change the drive the Downloads folder stores things in? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 06:48 PM PDT I want to change where the Downloads folder in the Finder stores files–from the drive the OS is installed on, to a different hard drive with lots of space. Is there any way to do that? [link] [comments] |
How to connect MacBook to two external monitors? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 10:52 AM PDT I wish to connect my MacBook A1342 (white, 2010) to two external monitors, so that both show different views of an extended desktop. I currently have one monitor connected via a Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt Compatible) to HDMI HDTV Cable. The other monitor is exactly the same as the first, only I'm not sure how I might connect it to my laptop too. I am using the only Mini DisplayPort, leaving only two other USB ports available for use. I've been looking at different methods, but there is a lot of mixed information out there on what to do. vpn configuration built in certificates idms Posted: 06 Jun 2018 05:38 PM PDT Hi I was playing around with the add vpn configuration settings a while ago and noticed if I set vpn type as IKEv2 and set user authentication as certificate then I was able to select two certificates named "com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.0XXXXXXX(long random numbers)" this only happens when Im signed into iCloud if I sign out there certs are no longer available. What do these certs represent and is this normal? [link] [comments] |
iCloud Photo Library stuck on Updating macOS 10.13.5 Posted: 06 Jun 2018 05:36 PM PDT My photos app is stuck updating and Im not sure what to do. I've let it run for a day but nothing happened. Any suggestions on what to do would be great! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jun 2018 05:32 PM PDT Long story short. Bought a 2016 pro and got the infamous keyboard failure this led to multiple swaps in which I would wait about 2 week per swap to get things processed and receive a new macbook. They had a different set of key(s) fail me every time. The third replacement did wel for the remainder of the year but the enter key failed me to around the 2017 pro refresh. They promised me the would swap it for a 2017 model and this took almost 3 months to get processed by apple support. I've held on to that new 2017 macbook until recently my spacebar key is slowly starting to fail to. I love the mac but absolutely hate the keyboard. It has completely ruined the experience with the mac what would have otherwise been a great device. I am at a complete loss at what to do right now. I guess I need to contact apple support again but the chance of me getting another defective model is insanely high. Anybody else here had such a horrible experience? What did you tell apple support at this point? I don't really know what I can demand/ask of them Please help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jun 2018 05:19 PM PDT I've got an iMac (14,2 late 2013 27" 3tb fusion 16gb ram) with a drive that acting very...ummm poorly. I've owned the iMac since 2014 and have had bootcamp (windows 8.2) happily installed on it since then. Recently the windows side slowed down to a crawl, then the mac os side slowed down to a crawl. I back up via time machine regularly so I clean installed mac os (high sierra) ans Windows 8 again. After a few days windows side slowed and then wouldn't open, mac os side was fine. Tried to wipe and reinstall windows a cpl times via bootcamp assistant, failed a cpl times upon install. Decided to separate my fusion drive to the 120gb SSD and the 3tb platter drive. Reinstalled mac os on the SSD, works great.! The 3tb drive does not work so great though... It mounts (yay!) but a 3gb video file took 5m to transfer to it then shuddered on playback. Something is really off with it. I'm perfectly willing to crack the iMac open and install a new platter (or ssd) drive but is that what I've come to? Am I missing some other option to try on the drive before I toss it? Thx! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:51 PM PDT So one of our kids spilt water all over the top of my closed MacBook Air (2014) model. Didn't know until I went to use but think it happened sometime in the 8 hours prior. Sat in near the heater for a week before trying to power it back on. It works apart from this rainbow coloured line in the middle of the screen. The line was much wider initially but seems to have reduced to the pictured size. Is this a cheap fix or will it end up costing more than the unit is worth. It is used mainly as a family backup laptop but would love to have it working again. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
4 kernel panics in a single day Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:08 PM PDT 2015 macbook pro with 3.1 Ghz i7 and 16 gb of ram. Starting today, i've been getting a bunch of kernel panics. The issue seems to be related to whenever I do something with a SMB share but I cannot be 100% sure. Not exactly sure how to decipher them but the weird thing is that they aren't all the same extensions causing it each time. On June 3, I installed 10.13.5. However it still ran fine for two days. I enabled time machine for the first time ever on the 4th. I was using SMB for at least two days after that, im not aware of any other changes today. I've temporarily disabled Time Machine to see if it makes a difference. Is there anything that can be inferred from the kernel panic logs? https://pastebin.com/rYuLZwvS [link] [comments] |
Do I want to upgrade my 15" MBPR? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 04:18 PM PDT I have a mid-2012 MBPR, 2.6GHz i7, 16G, 2T SSD - what, if anything, would I gain by upgrading to a mid-2015 model with all the same specs save for a 2.5GHz i7? [link] [comments] |
Apple Calendar Issues When Traveling Posted: 06 Jun 2018 03:50 PM PDT When traveling, deleted events appear, with the one-day ones stretching over a week. This is happening in macOS High Sierra, automatic timezone identification is set in Sys Pref's, and Timezone support is turned on in Calendar prefs. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Issue signing into iMessage on Macbook Pro Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:25 PM PDT I swear every single time I try to sign in with my Apple ID it gets locked and I have to reset it, even though it's the correct password. It's driving me nuts! is there a way to fix this? [link] [comments] |
XServe G5 Power Supply Voltages Posted: 06 Jun 2018 03:28 PM PDT I was given an Xserve G5 a year or so ago, but can't get it to work. After probably fifty hours of troubleshooting, and trying fix after fix after fix, I've determined that my PSU is broken. I would buy a new one, but it's around $600 for this model. It's a Delta DPS-400GB-1 A. I took it apart and tested the pins, so that I could "remake" the power supply with an old spare one and just match the voltages. However, the broken pins do not give me the proper voltage readout, and as such, I cannot find out what voltages to supply to some of the pins. And, I cannot find anyone online who has measured it as well. I have found the pins connected to the GND and +12V pins, but there are three remaining jumpers on the board (the broken ones) that I cannot measure. I have narrowed it down to either 5V or 3.3V, but I do not want to just guess as the wrong voltage could easily destroy the logic board. Does anyone either know what voltages these three pins would be, or have an Xserve G5 and a multimeter that would be willing to test said pins? Thanks for the help-I really appreciate it! I posted this an hour or so ago in r/Apple and I got a comment from someone saying something along the lines of "There's one of these on eBay for $10", which is false. They were looking at the incorrect model - the cheapest that I can find is a refurb, and is still about $200. Again - thank you for the help!! For those who are curious, here are its symptoms. It does the infamous "Super fan" thing on startup - a common issue with G5 towers (not so much with XServe though), where when turned on, the fans gradually get faster and faster until they are at full power. The HDDs have been removed - but I am not trying to actually boot into an OS just yet - for now, I would just at least like to see the apple boot screen on a monitor - but nothing will show. (Yes, the GPU is working fine, as is the monitor.). The front light panel displays none of the blue status lights (they are all off), and the same goes for the HDD status lights, regardless of whether or not the HDDs are in the computer. There is also one yellow warning light at the back that shines yellow, and the warning light on the front does the same. Nothing changes if the server case is locked or unlocked. The power light flashes a few times every few seconds when it is powered on, but then no more. The power supply makes a hissing noise, which is obviously very bad. With a multimeter, I have confirmed that the +12V rails still work, but the 5V (or 3.3V, I don't know, and that is what I am trying to find out with this post) rails do not work. I have also replaced the lithium CMOS battery, as that was dead as well originally. The DVD drive will not even take in a disk! The RAM, CPUs, and all else work, but I have a bad feeling that the logic board may have gone down with the PSU, which is why I don't want to just buy a new PSU, in the case that it isn't the only broken thing. Cheers! [link] [comments] |
[iPhone 6]WhatsApp voice-messages don't work as soon as I use the upper speaker Posted: 06 Jun 2018 03:05 PM PDT Hey guys, So a bit of a problem here - My WhatsApp audios only work on the loud speaker. As soon as I move it to my ear, the screen goes black as usual, but there's no sound. The message keeps playing though, and a "muted sound" logo appears on the phone. I don't know how to fix this. Volume is maxed out, the button on the side isn't on quiet, and normal calls work as usual, the speaker isn't broken. Can someone help me out with this? It's kinda annoying when it's something private or just things in general that others shouldn't listen to, I really need to get this fixed. Thanks already! Edit: Guys, I'm absolutely stupid. I had to hold the phone against my ear and raise the volume. That's it. I thought there's a ringtone volume and a normal "system" volume, but not a "speaker volume". There's no option for it, it isn't visible anywhere, it's only there when you hold it against your ear and raise it. I won't delete this thread though, as I saw many other people with the same problem but no one had a solution. Holy shit I'm dumb. [link] [comments] |
Can't change folder icons to a different image? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:58 PM PDT I've had this issue for a while now and can't figure out how to fix it. I used to be able to just drag an icon in the Get info popup for a folder and drag over the image but it just changes how the folder looks to be a .png image and doesn't show the actual icon. I've tried this with multiple different icons and types and nothing works. Here is a gif that shows this in action: https://imgur.com/a/1fbk4mX I've followed Apple's instructions to a T and can't get it to work: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25383?locale=en_US [link] [comments] |
Creating bootable USB from internet recovery? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 12:55 PM PDT I have a mid-2011 iMac with a failing hard drive. By failing, I mean when I start it up it will go to my desktop, but if I click on anything it's beachball of death for hours until I do a manual shutdown. So it's basically useless, and when I tried to do a reinstall of the OS through Internet Recovery it told me the drive has SMART errors and needs to be replaced. I don't have access to another Apple machine. Is there a way for me to create a bootable USB drive from Internet Recovery? Or am I going to have to wrangle my way through trying to do it through Windows somehow? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:59 AM PDT Does anyone know how to set up a VNC connection with a custom domain name and access a mac from outside of a local network? Can I somehow set it up with a DDNS service? I use a Synology router if that matters. [link] [comments] |
Finder on iMac is no longer searching Indesign or Illustrator for search term(s) within the file. Posted: 06 Jun 2018 02:49 PM PDT iMac, Mid 2011. Running OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.5 I thought something strange was going on with my search for the last few months, but didn't give it much thought as it still worked. I use to be able to type in a term, and if the word appeared anywhere in the file it would return it in the search list. It would give me every single kind of document that had the term, whether it was in the name or within the file. However today I searched for a term that I knew was inside an Illustrator file I made, and it didn't return the result. I tested this out several times, made sure all the settings were right ("Search this mac" enabled). I think I updated a few months ago, which could possibly be related. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jun 2018 02:39 PM PDT I'm looking at picking up one of two used Macbooks: Early 2013 15" without a discrete nvidia gpu 16gb ram and 500gb sdd hdd. Less money but only has intel HD4000 video. or Mid 2014 15" with an Nvidia 750m, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd. More money but nice gpu. I'm concerned with overheating as the Macbook I'm replacing had an issue with it (2011 15" with AMD gpu). Should I go with the less powerful built in intel gpu or get the beefy Nvidia one? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
