First Time Machine backup EXTREMELY slow. Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:07 PM PDT Hey guys, just want a some opinions on something. For the last couple of years, I've been manually backing up my files, but I recently decided to do a time machine backup that I'll probably start doing semi-annually or so, so i purchased a 2 TB external seagate hard drive. Last night I set everything up, I had to backup about 450GB of data which took a couple of hours, which is fine. But right now the Time Machine backup has been encrypting, and it's been about 27 hours, and I'm only on 15 percent... I could wait the whole time, but that's going to be 5-6 days, maybe more. Should I restart this backup? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? I read somewhere that if I restart it and format the drive as (Journaled, Encrypted), it should be a bit faster. I don't know if this is true or worth it. I also heard that there's a terminal command that will speed it up, but I feel like that's dangerous for such a large amount of data. Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you. [link] [comments] |
Proximity Sensor Active all the Time Posted: 20 Jun 2018 07:30 PM PDT My iPhone (6) proximity sensor is active all the time, and the screen turns off if my hand gets too close to the light sensor. How do I fix it so it is only active during a call or turn it off altogether? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Jun 2018 05:11 PM PDT Hello, I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro (2015) IOS High Sierra that I purchased brand new in 2017. For some reason, it keeps saying that my storage space is almost full. Just before I purchased this mac, I was using a Macbook Pro that I got in 2009 and I never had an issue with a full disk/storage space, so I'm a little confused. I even moved the majority of my files (if not all) to iCloud, which I don't like doing. When I go to "About this Mac" and "Storage," it shows that the majority of my space is taken up by "system." Anyone have any idea why I may be experiencing this issue? I don't have a screenshot at the moment because it comes up periodically, but I just tried to upgrade my OS and it said I don't have enough space, and that reminded me to ask the reddit world. How do I get rid of that damn U2 album on my iPhone? Posted: 20 Jun 2018 10:24 PM PDT I know this is really old news and sorry if it's been covered before. I wasn't bothered by the U2 album before, I only use Spotify for music on my phone so I never really noticed the existence of that album. I got a new car late last year though and whenever I hook up my phone it automatically starts playing the first track off that album and it's a race to get spotify started before I lose my mind (the first song has a super annoying intro btw). I thought I'd deleted the album already, it hasn't been playing for the past two months or so but now all of a sudden it's back?! Is there a way to get rid of it permanently or do I just need to keep going back to delete it time after time? [link] [comments] |
Storage issue- iMac 27inch macos High Sierra Posted: 20 Jun 2018 02:49 PM PDT I don't know if here is the right place to ask this, but I can't seem to find an answer on the internet anywhere, I need help from a mac expert and this seems like the right spot. So I just got a new iMac with a 256GB SSD. I configured Time Machine on an external hard drive and downloaded Elder scrolls Online game on Steam to the default location(The SSD). After seeing this took 100GB I quickly realised this was not a good idea and uninstalled it from steam. I wanted to install it again and select a different place but steam says I have not enough storage space on my SSD despite uninstalling... I tried rebooting my mac, force-restarting finder, restarting time machine, restarting spotlight, deleting steam game download cache but nothing helped. Last resort is restoring to factory settings but I really don't want to do that... Thanks in advance for the help. It's my first time here and I have no idea if this is appropriate for this subreddit or not, I just don't know what to do and where to ask this. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 10:14 PM PDT So I'm going on a road trip tomorrow, and I'm taking my mom's car which is an Audi and it has a space for an iPod to connect to the sound system. For some reason the car will only play music from iPods and not iPhones and this is in the owners manual. Is there a way I can trick the car into thinking my iPhone is an iPod? [link] [comments] |
Can I connect a Thunderbolt 2 external harddrive, to a USB 3.0 type A port? Posted: 20 Jun 2018 10:00 PM PDT I was gifted a Mybook Pro Duo Thunderbolt 2 https://www.amazon.com/Thunderbolt-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBUTV0080JSL-NESN/dp/B00F0JXDB4 but I have a PC. Is there an adapter that will let me use this with one of my USB 3.0 type A ports? Like this harddrive, except clearly it isn't built into the harddrive https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HHX72ZM/B/lacie-4tb-rugged-raid-thunderbolt-usb-30-mobile-hard-drive?fnode=5f&fs=fh%3D3783%252B401f%252B30a8%252B45ea%252B4623 I don't need the Thunderbolt speeds, just the ability to copy files with a program like HFS+? Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:10 PM PDT I recently purchased a Crucial 120 GB SSD to install in my mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro. However, I couldn't figure out how to copy over the data from the old hard drive to the new hard drive. Somehow I ended up with a time machine backup on the new SSD. This won't let me properly restore the SSD or use it in the computer. I can still plug in the HDD and use that, but the SSD isn't working. I disabled time machine. What should I do to properly copy the data to the SSD? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Jun 2018 02:04 PM PDT I was given 2 MacBook Airs and 1 MacBook Pro to sell for a friend. I was able to pull up the Model, EMC, serial #, processor, SSD but not an accurate year. The one says it's a 2017 model, but I think that's the OS version. But after searching the web, I got inconclusive results. How do you identify the correct year that model was released ? Thanks in advance, [link] [comments] |
Need Help Booting My MacBook Pro 2015 Posted: 20 Jun 2018 06:54 PM PDT I want to sell my Mac so I restored it to factory settings when I went to boot it I have no driver. I have no idea what to do.here's some pics of what I see when I boot up [link] [comments] |
Boxes on Desktop won't go away Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:19 AM PDT Very strange thing I am running into here. As you can see from this image, I have boxes that are 'stuck' to my desktop. Doesn't matter which wallpaper I choose, the boxes are essentially a second layer on top of my desktop. Anyone have any insight as to why or how to fix this? Thank you Edit: I have tried restarting the machine [link] [comments] |
Is the issue my keyboard or something else? Please help me out. Posted: 20 Jun 2018 06:17 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro mid-2012, model A1278. I spilled coffee on my keyboard. I quickly wiped it off the keyboard and I still don't know what possessed me to not immediately turn off my computer and flip it over. I kept on using it for about 10 minutes before the volume started increasing/decreasing on it's own and new tabs were opening by themselves. THAT'S when I realized I f***** up. Please don't insult me. I know I was stupid. Anyways, my computer turns on and it says SAFE BOOT at the top. It seems to work fine but a few keys don't work, including some that weren't directly exposed to the spill. Since I can't log in I click TURN OFF and it works. I tried testing the volume buttons and a circle-backslash symbol shows up instead of the volume bar. It's been like this for a week now. I've looked this up online but for most people their computer doesn't even turn on. So I can't tell if my keyboard is the issue or if it's something deeper. When I flip it open I can still smell the coffee so there's definitely some residue in there. I'm taking it in to Apple this weekend but I'd like some input beforehand. Thanks for any feedback, I really appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
Transfer deleted Apple ID to another account? Posted: 20 Jun 2018 05:53 PM PDT A friend had 2 iCloud accounts. He deleted one of the accounts a few weeks ago because he made it by mistake a long time ago and never used it. He wants to take the deleted account's ID (his sign-in email address) and use that with his active account. It won't let him right now. Is there a time he has to wait before he can use it? Is that email address forever blacklisted from using as an Apple ID? Does he have to request Apple to let him use it? [link] [comments] |
Selecting carrier when roaming? iPhone X/iOS 11.4 Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:08 AM PDT I'm in Toronto for the week from Atlanta and my carrier is ATT. I have a plan that allows me to roam with no extra penalty/fees but my phone keeps switching carriers between Rogers, Bell, and Freedom. I can't do anything except for make and receive calls when my phone isn't on Rogers, but I have no control over when it switches. I tried digging in my settings but couldn't find anything, and need data so I can access maps & whatsapp. Is there anything I can do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:43 AM PDT So my friend blocked me for shits and giggles, if I send him money through Apple pay will he receive it? Or will it be treated like a normal blocked text. [link] [comments] |
Garageband keeps crashing everytime I use the "share" function Posted: 20 Jun 2018 01:35 PM PDT Hi! As the title explains, Garageband crashes everytime I even hover over the share function. I looked online, and most people said that I was running an old version of the program, but it's version 10.2, which is the newest. Do any of you have any fixes? If it matters I'm running it on a 2012 MacBook Pro, and all I really want is to get an mp3 of the track I made so if there's any way to do that without using the share function I'd happily do that. Posted: 20 Jun 2018 01:31 PM PDT I've heared many people with older gen iphones tend to have low battery issues, which is why i went to my local apple store and replaced my battery with a brand new one for $30. But my battery still continues to drain shockingly fast while IDLE. What is strange about my phones battery is that when idle, (literally no apps or anthing in the background running), the battery drains insanely fast. I'm talking 20-30% in under and hour from nothing, BUT, when i have my music app running in the background, it doesnt drain at all. I tested this by going to the movies a couple times, the first time, i had it idle throughout the whole movie. The battery went from 96% to 51% by the end of the movie. Then the next time i went, i connected my earbuds and let the song play in the background while i was watching the movie. By the end of the movie, it went from 100% to 95%. Why is it acting up so strangely? Can someone provide me a reason/solution to this problem? Thanks Specs: Iphone 6, IOS 11 [link] [comments] |

Is my boyfriend's mother's iPhone erased? Posted: 20 Jun 2018 04:43 PM PDT My boyfriend's mother passed away about a month ago and she had a passcode on her iPhone (8 I think?). She told my boyfriend the passcode a long time ago but he has long since forgotten what it was. They have tried everything to get into the phone, so much that for a day or two the iPhone said it was locked/disabled. They want to get into the iPhone to take the pictures and videos off of it. They even went to somebody and the person told them that Apple would contact them in 3 days about a code they're supposed to enter on the phone so they can get into it. Last night, I was at my boyfriend's house and we turned on his mother's phone to charge it and it was at the white Hello screen. We slid the screen to unlock the phone and it asked us to pick a language. This was very weird because used to, her lockscreen and passcode would come up. During this, my iPhone 6s was trying to pair up my email with her phone, claiming it was a "new iPhone." This raised some red flags with me because my iPad did the same thing as soon as I bought it and started it up. After entering our language, the phone told us to bring any Apple device that had iOS 11 on it to set it up. This also raised some red flags and raised the question to if it was wiped/erased or not. My boyfriend's dad said the person they went to for help got it to the white Hello screen and said to not mess with it until Apple contacted them with the code to get into the phone. We stopped using it and just charged it. Like I said, my concern is that there's no need to even wait for Apple to call because I feel that it was somehow erased when the person that helped them tried to get into the phone. I don't know much about what the person did, but I do know they went into Find My iPhone. Is my boyfriend's mother's iPhone erased? If it is, how can they get the pictures off of her phone? She does have an iCloud but they don't know if her phone was backed up or not, and even if it was, they don't know her iCloud password. Please help and TIA! [link] [comments] |
How to recover from botched High Sierra install on 2013 Mac Mini? Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:39 AM PDT So I decided to upgrade my home media center Mac Mini from 10.12.6 to High Sierra. All I can say is... OUCH. I have a lot of Mac experience. I'm a mac guy, I used to do IT for Macs, I know enough Unix to be dangerous, I'm not afraid of the command line and I'm stuck pre/mid-install and having a lot of trouble backing out of it. My 2013 Mac Mini has the OEM 500GB hard drive (not an SSD). It started out with the apparently well known
error (although I wasn't aware of this issue before). I then took my High Sierra macbook pro, downloaded the full installer from the App Store and created a USB stick with the High Sierra installer on it. When I boot from the USB installer, I can't install because the hard drive is "locked". If I open the installer logs I see several warnings about the hard drive format not being HFS 'journaled' and not being able to convert to APFS, although I know for sure that it was Journaled. Also it's not an SSD so I wasn't expecting it to force the conversion to APFS. I tried to follow instructions about disabling SIP and deleting the install folders to get out of the installation mode, but that's not working for me. When I try to use "sudo" in terminal for the command
it tells me that it doesn't know where "sudo" is. If I run the command without sudo, I get a ton of errors that the folder/files are locked. So pretty much nothing is working. I do have backups, but I really do NOT want to wipe and reinstall the OS from scratch, then restore from backups. I want to fix it, because there was nothing wrong with it before the upgrade (which hasn't started yet), and I'm stubborn. But I'm running out of ideas. I could probably make a trip to the genius bar, but I have a feeling their approach will also be 'erase and reinstall'. I don't need them for that, I can do that myself. I know this should be fix-able but I'm stumped and annoyed. I'm open to any ideas. I'd like to either a) "unlock" my hard drive and continue with the high sierra install or b) get out of the install mode. Any time I try to boot from the OE drive, I just get stuck at the 'OSInstall appears to be missing or damaged' message. Anything I do in Disk Utility doesn't unlock the drive. I haven't seen any menu option for "unlock drive" although I've seen some people reference that it should be an option somewhere. Some references I've been using: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/301236/how-can-i-abort-a-high-sierra-installation Other notes about the machine: It has Virtualbox, EyeTV and Plex Server installed. Otherwise the OS is pretty much stock - I wanted to keep it family friendly. Any assistance is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Replacing a dead Thunderbolt display - need input Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:29 AM PDT /r/applehelp, I'm spoiled. For years I used two Apple Thunderbolt displays positioned side-by-side, but one of them recently died. I didn't realize how much I actually use a second monitor until I don't have one. I'm looking for a replacement. Ideally, the new monitor will be about 27", but also support rotation to portrait mode. Recommendations welcome. I'm also kind of concerned because practically no contemporary monitors support Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt port on my remaining monitor is already connected to a projector that I use occasionally, so I think that I need an HDMI switch - or better still, something that can connect two HDMI monitors to a single Thunderbolt / DisplayPort port. I presume that others are in the same boat; how is your experience? [link] [comments] |
Wifi is connected but stops working frequently (Retina MBP mid 2015) Posted: 20 Jun 2018 10:57 AM PDT My wifi never loses connectivity, and my other devices all work without issue, but I have to toggle my wifi on and off on my laptop every 3-5 minutes to keep it working. It always reports full connectivity in the menu bar but upload and download crash to 0 every few minutes until I toggle the wifi on and off on my laptop. It's basically unusable. [link] [comments] |

Gmail app on iPhone: confusing email addresses Posted: 20 Jun 2018 10:30 AM PDT I have two Gmail addresses that I use for different purposes (call them Business and Personal). In general, I am using a laptop/desktop computer, so I mostly use them in separate Chrome windows. Everything works fine there. On my phone I use the Gmail app, and have the two accounts set up within the app. I switch between the accounts to read/write emails. I was talking with a company via the Business account, and replied to one of their messages on my phone. The Reply-To address on that email was switched to my Personal account, even though the contact sent the email to my Business account, and I was logged in to my Business account in the Gmail iPhone app. I checked the Gmail app settings, and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to define the "Reply To" address. The Personal address is my primary Gmail account, that I have used for years. The Business one I just set up a few weeks ago for a specific job search. And I really don't want to cross the streams here. Question: Any idea why Gmail chose to use my Personal email address to respond to an email in my Business email account? [link] [comments] |
