Apple should reward people who contribute to Apple maps

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 07:21 AM PDT

I know it's not very Apple ways to do something like crowded sourcing, but I think that'd be the only way maps can improve. Because no matter how many people they hired to add information to maps, they can't cover everything.

Google has the same thing called "Local guide". it's program that gives point to people who contribute to Google maps and at a certain point you can have 1TB of free storage

I think Apple should do this too so their service will improve at a faster rate. They could do something like give 1TB of iCloud storage for free to people who contribute to a certain point too.

What do you guys think ?

Should Apple enforce a designated format for pop-ups?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 09:30 AM PDT

I am so sick of iOS apps with pop-up ads designed to make it difficult to not accidentally click the ad when pressing the X button to close. This is due to it being extremely tiny with a small touch area and it being in a difficult to reach area.

Should Apple create a designated format for these ads to reduce frustration, but not have them go away entirely?

What are some must have iPad Pro apps that kill time?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 09:44 AM PDT

I'm on bed rest with a stress fracture in my hip... from the looks of things, I have several more weeks to get though and possibly a surgery.

Netflix only entertains me for so long... what are some good iPad Pro apps that are good time killers? I'd like to stick with the free ones!

LPT: Use Spotlight to Quickly Convert Currencies

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 06:16 AM PDT

This works on both iOS and macOS. Type any foreign currency (e.g. €20) and Spotlight will convert it into the currency of whatever region you've set your device to.

    Got an iPad Pro 12.9

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 10:23 PM PDT

And Christ almighty it's one of the best things I've ever had. I've had it for a few days now, been working on it with creating my exam reviews for my final year of high school and it's just been marvellous. I've been on word, using OneDrive to make both my notes, used docs for last group assignments for law, played music on it before, tried writing notes and its response is insane along with the keyboard being a beauty. The speed is insane and I love it compared to my old 2014 HP laptop.

The Geekbench scores that I ran on it was amazing as well along with its multitasking. One feature I love so much is how it forces me to be productive. I'm not easily distracted as I was on my old laptop and the three windows just helps working, messaging and writing emails. Especially with planning my timetable for exams, it's been a miracle and stuff and Apple has sold me on this. 256GBs, three-four cores. I can't wait to fully use this at university.

I will admit, it can potentially replace a laptop but the docks are its biggest flaw in my opinion but overall it really is a productivity machine. Battery life is amazing as well. I definitely say that battery life is definitely 10 hours and maybe even more if I stay on multitask work as well.

    TL;DR

The iPad pro is definitely a productivity machine and amazing for work and being a productive individual. Gets rid of distractions, amazing processing power with its octa-cores and speed. Christ all mighty. For sure I live for this damn thing. I'm ready for university with this and summer school. But remember that it doesn't fully replace a laptop. I love it.

iPad as a computer replacement: end of year 1, post 2: RAW photo management

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 10:48 AM PDT

After iOS 11 released in beta form last year i added it to my ipad pro immediately. I fell in love with Apple's direct attention to iPad in iOS 11. From drag and drop to pushing for better Pro apps, i decided to commit to iPad as my primary, then eventually only, computer.

I wanted to cover how i accomplished this and why by December I was all in on iPad and sold my MacBook Pro 15" w/Touch Bar. I already wrote Part 1 here about the files app.

SKIP THIS paragraph if you don't care for anecdotes. The primary reason for owning my MacBook in the first place was because of photography. I am a sailor in the Navy, and in 2013 I was all in on android and windows. I bought a big fancy camera (sony A7) and quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing. I spent a lot of deployment practicing and learning how to shoot. The software i was using to edit on my Sony convertible windows 8 tablet was decent, but inconsistent. I had heard that editing photos on MacBook was a thing and i decided while in port in Dubai that i wanted a change. So I went and spent a bunch of foreign currency on a MacBook Pro 2014. Anyway, I instantly fell in love with this computer and the software I quickly got while on WiFi. I honestly dont remember the software name but it was bare bones. This is also when i started using apple products, sold my windows convertible and sony Xperia z ultra and ended up with an iphone and a MacBook. some sample photos of that deployment, and yes very crude and over-edited..

Anyway, I digress. I get back from deployment, discover Macphun apps, now called Skylum, and use their suite of apps to develop and publish my photos on MacBook. I bought the 2016 MacBook Pro w/Touch Bar on release day and continued to use this until I got my iPad Pro in July of last year.

NOW BACK to the workflow. I needed to manage my photos and edit them professionally with ease. Affinity photo brought the level of editing I needed. I shoot full manual in RAW on my Sony A7ii. These photos are in Sony's .ARW format and run 50 MB per photo. I import my photos via a lightning to USB-A connected to the camera via Micro-USB. This opens photos and has been enhanced greatly with iOS 12. The photos load in a moment and transfer a 50 photo collection in a few seconds. Photos will now show which photos have already been imported.

Now the RAW photos are in photos.app I generally want to keep the RAW photos intact and backed up if the client needs a new copy or different editing style. I select the photos I've just imported and save them to my iXpand flash drive directly in the files.app interface. I can even have a local copy saved in the file browser app for easy access.

I've tried a couple of workflows from here. The least destructive to the photos is to open them with affinity photo directly. This creates a new photo in affinity as a separate editing space. RAW photos open directly in the RAW editing suite. After ensuring the histogram is where I want it and remove enough noise. I "develop" the RAW photo. It pops out into the standard editing suite where you can go as deep as you want. Generally I remove unwanted objects or blemishes with their great tool and use Apple Pencil to be precise. While I can do any additional edits in affinity, I like Polarr for its non destructive editing. So from here I export the finished jpeg from affinity and save it in photos.app.

I delete the RAW photo in photos.app and open the jpeg in Metapho to add location data and any other metadata I want.

Now for Polarr. This app is very straightforward and could be accomplished 80% in affinity, but I like Polarr better for this portion. This is where I apply my crop. Usually cropping to 4:3 to fit the iPad screen. The app has good face detection for some smoothing if needed. Also it has a built in watermark tool. I can then export from here as HEIF or jpeg.

And that's it. I took a 50MB RAW file and edited it for distribution with very little compression with a file size of around 1MB.

Honorable mentions: pixelmator is amazing for graphics and making layered images. It's object selection tool is amazing with Apple Pencil. And procreate if you want to get extra artsy with an edit.

Hope this helps! I went very top level here because this isn't a tutorial on how to edit photos, just the order I take and apps I use. I would have never sold my MacBook if this workflow was not possible. Opening photos in macphuns suite would lag and sometimes committing an edit could take several moments on an i7 with dedicated graphics. iPad Pro never even hesitates.

I casually shoot photos for fun, shoot cosplay photos and family photos as well. I do paid gigs on the side as well. Here are some samples of photos created in this workflow.

Thanks for reading. If you have any questions about this workflow or others, please ask.

Update: color management on iPad isn't a thing on the system level, however you can download custom ICC profiles for use in app. I personally never fiddled with profiles since displaymate seems to think "iPad Pro is indistinguishable from perfect" in terms of color accuracy. Glad the ability exists for those power users out there.

    Iphoto camera power functions wishlist

    Posted: 18 Jun 2018 01:24 AM PDT

I use my mobile camera a lot for documenting job sites and building materials. It would be super useful to be able to immediately add photo notes or comments as a form of record keeping. The photo notes are automatically included when sent or uploaded to an iphoto shared folder for other team members to see. This way, information such as pricing, specs, comments can be included.

Notes would allow for keyword search - quick, useful way to find photos. Searching for old photos by endless screen flipping = torture

Also useful (from wechat): when sharing, have a hold press option to view entire photo to make sure that the right one is selected, rather than just seeing cropped thumbnail. During upload process, being able to change order - follow photo selection order, instead of just by capture time.

View photos as more than just a social tool, enhance it's working capabilities also.

    Safari vs Chrome

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 11:12 AM PDT

For some reason Chrome is a lot faster and more stable on my MacBook than Safari. But this goes against what everyone else is saying about Safari being faster and more stable.

I use Squarespace a lot to edit websites. But Chrome seems to handle that so much better. Also some websites in general just don't seem to load properly on Safari.

Are there any settings I can check as I would rather use Safari.

An additional note, I have Ad Block set up on Safari, you think that is interfering with anything?

Is there an app for that? Writing in two languages at the same time.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 12:47 PM PDT

    Hi ladies and gents!

I'not sure whether this is the right place to ask. If it's not I'd love you for directing me towards such a place.

What I'm looking for is a writing app that allows me to write the same text in two different languages and display both texts next to each other. Since the languages in question for me are mostly German and English the lengths of the text will be vastly different. That's why I'd like it to display paragraph next to paragraph regardless of respective length, like in this example. The first one is the ordinary but wrong behaviour, the second my desired behaviour:

    Heart Study

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 03:40 AM PDT

Has anyone gotten any info out of the heart study? How many days have you been contributing and how many contributions have you made? I've been in it for 42 days and contributed 139 times. I thought when I signed up I'd be able to see something online about it at some point or get some feedback on it eventually. Just curious to see other peoples experiences with it.

    Mac, PC and ePGU

    Posted: 17 Jun 2018 04:37 AM PDT

Currently thinking about buying a gaming set up that will allow me to play modern titles at a decent fps (60fps+). I am curious as to what others think about my current situation. I don't think my position is unique but I don't really have anyone to talk to about this – so I thought I'll ask you clever people.

I am mainly a MAC user. I am a hobbyist photographer (raw shooter, lightroom and photoshop with plugins), I occasionally edit 1080p GoPro videos. I work in the medical field so I do a lot of writing, presentations, project management and research (Scrivener, Bear, Microsoft Office Suite, Papers, Stata). I also maintain a large library of ebooks, music, films and tv shows on my external LaCie RAID. I currently own a 2015 MBP i7 with discrete graphic card. On the side, I have an iPhone X and iPad Pro, which I am heavily invested in in terms of apps and services…etc – I use them for work and play.

I have Bootcamp running on my MAC. Windows 10 is quite important for work simply because better compatibility with files and software all round. Although I am not as familiar with Windows 10 as with MacOS, but Windows 10 is growing on me because it seems to have improved a lot since the XP days. I use my Bootcamp for casual gaming, and as you can imagine the performance isn't great. I am currently playing Skyrim Special Edition averaging around 30fps, and I am pretty happy with it…

So I have been thinking about getting a gaming laptop with a descent graphics card (1070 or better). There are many thin and light laptop out there which I think performs better than current gen MBPs (the whole keyboard thing is a total joke, I would personally never buy a current gen MBP because of what appears to be a faulty keyboard design). The new Razor Blade 15 (2018) seems pretty good, for example, but it is not a cheap laptop just for gaming (£2000+). I can afford it but I feel I may not be getting the most value out of it.

Then I thought about getting an eGPU. The new Razor X enclosure + a nvidia 1080 card will probably set me back just over £1000, which is still less than a 2018 Razor Blade 15 and future proofs me when I upgrade my laptop to something with a TB3 port. So I thought this might be a good option to go down. But then I thought, if it is just for gaming at home, should I be looking at a small PC desktop build? Will that be more cost effective? I have never built a PC myself. So that would require me to do more research into. I also don't have a decent external display at the moment (I know eGPU performs better connected to an external display, but for my level of gaming, anything 60fps is good enough for now on the internal laptop display).

TLDR: What do you guys think about the three options? Getting a decent gaming laptop, eGPU or build a budget gaming PC for someone in my situation?

    Thanks for reading!
