[Discussion] iOS 12 Beta FAQs / Best Practices / General Beta Season advice Posted: 30 May 2018 01:31 AM PDT Hello! We are only 5 days away from the WWDC keynote. This sub has grown a lot, this is awesome! This also means a lot of new users might be excited about a new beta and may have a few misconceptions or questions. I decided to compile a list of best practices and FAQs that apply to all betas. 1-) When can I install the beta? Based on previous releases, the first developer beta should be released about an hour (But possibly longer) after the end of the keynote on Monday. The first public beta comes ~3 weeks after that, when the 2nd or 3rd developer beta gets released. 2-) Do I have to pay to install a beta? No. Do not buy UDID registrations from third parties, do not share your Apple ID details or device's unique IDs. The developer beta requires an Apple Developer ID to be installed, however, the beta profile is often shared between users - With the profile you won't need a developer account, but always make sure that the certificate appears as signed by Apple Inc, not an unknown email or username when installing it on your device. The public beta is available for all Apple IDs, just register interest here after the Public Beta gets announced for iOS 12. You can alternatively download the iOS beta IPSW file and install using iTunes. 3-) Is it possible to damage my device by running beta software? No. At least, it's extremely unlikely to be considered a possibility. Betas carry a lot of instability, inefficiency, battery issues and a plethora of bugs (And you should consider not installing the beta on a device you rely on during your day), I've personally got in trouble for oversleeping after a beta killed my alarm, but none of that should be able to damage the hardware, even beta builds are first tested by Apple before being deployed. If everything is broken software side you can always use DFU mode, DFU mode is guaranteed by the hardware and allows you to restore the system via iTunes on macOS/Windows or libidevice on Linux. 4-) Do an iTunes backup before installing the beta Most of us have migrated to iCloud backups: They are great, automatic, and very reliable. Although iCloud backups are perfectly acceptable for daily use... They are not for betas. Why? Because when running the beta software your iCloud backups will then replace old ones, and expect the beta software, so if you need to kick back to the older version iCloud won't let you restore your backup. An iTunes backup made before installing the beta will always be available and restorable. 5-) Can I use my Apple Watch if my iPhone is running beta software? Yes, but keep in mind that if you also update your Watch to the watchOS beta you won't be able to use it with an iPhone that's not running the new beta, as you can't easily downgrade the Apple Watch. 6-) I found an app that doesn't work on the new beta, what should I do? You could report it to the developer, although they probably already know about it. The thing is, updates using the new APIs can only be issued to the App Store after the release of the final GM, therefore, if the bug is caused by an API change the app might not work until September/final version. Alternatively, if the app crashes but the fix won't depend on a new feature it can probably be updated, give the developers some time to adapt to the new OS. You can also enable sharing of diagnostics data with third party developers from the Privacy tab in the Settings app. 7-) How can I send feedback to Apple? Upon installing the beta a new app called "Feedback" should appear in your home screen, this app allows you to send feedback with extra details, screenshots and crash data. You can send suggestions or bug reports. 8-) I want to downgrade, how can I do it? You can only downgrade to the current public release of iOS, that means for example that you'll never be able to downgrade to iOS 9. If you wish to leave the beta, search for the IPSW file of the latest iOS version (Currently, iOS 11.4) and download it. Then, using iTunes, hold Option on a Mac or Shift on Windows and select "Restore", select your IPSW file, and iTunes will begin the downgrade. Do not attempt to use the Update button instead, as many tutorials try to teach you, this can cause permanent data loss and will create many bugs and glitches, you want a clean install of the OS whenever you downgrade. 9-) You must accept Craig Federighi as your lord and savior and you must preach His word Have a great beta season! I hope we can all enjoy some nice new features to impress the ladies with and collect crash logs before crying ourselves to sleep at night. [link] [comments]

[Discussion] iOS 11.4 throughout beta performance Posted: 30 May 2018 11:56 AM PDT Thought I'd share this with the enthusiasts, it includes 11.4 betas up to beta 5. I wanted to stop there as my phone was running great but I decided to upgrade to 11.4GM. I can say I'm super happy, I did lose about an hour or so of battery life upgrading to GM but it's silky smooth now. I believe there are a few early benchmarks included so extra bonus lol. iPhone 6S Plus: https://i.imgur.com/03Hd43c.jpg Also a picture of London police on horse I took today for comparison: [link] [comments]
