Posted: 11 Apr 2018 12:41 PM PDT I know these have been out a while but here are my thoughts for anyone that cares. I have to say, I've never been more satisfied with an Apple product since my original iPhone. If anyone's on the fence, here is a layman non-techy type review. I picked these up to replace a plantronics headset I'd had for a while that seems to have disappeared. I had been pretty happy with that unit and intended to buy another until I took another look at the AirPods. So, my review is basically weighed against that headset. Cost- at ~$160 I thought that seemed a bit high. However, for someone like me that uses a single bud at a time most of the time, I'm essentially getting 2 headsets for about $40 more than a replacement plantronics unit. That leads directly to the second advantage Battery life- I get about 5ish hours out of each earbud. That's already better than the plantronics, but then, when it dies, I drop it in the case and pop the other in. No down time. That's a huge plus for a guy like me that is operating remotely and on the phone all day. Then, since the case itself recharges the other bud in the case, I have PLENTY of power to work all day. I never could do that with the Plantronics. Sound quality- the AP's have far higher audio quality than the Plantronics. Call clarity is equivalent as well. None of my callers have complained about noise despite me talking from inside a jeep. Which is another thing- in noisy environments I can put both buds in which makes it easier to hear without having the volume at maximum. Ease of use- open the case and go. Couldn't be simpler. All in all, I'm thoroughly satisfied! [link] [comments] |

Just bought an 8 Plus after using a 5 for a while. It has really clicked why people love iPhones. Posted: 11 Apr 2018 10:56 AM PDT Like the title says I just got an iPhone 8 Plus. Wow is this thing amazing. It makes me want to use my phone now, instead of using it when I need to use a specific function. It's (obviously) so much faster/smoother, things look nicer, apps work better, and I have storage. Notifications are easier to deal with now, and I can finally unlock with a fingerprint again instead having to type in a damn passcode (used to have a 6P so the iPhone 5 took some getting used to in this regard). Some of you guys may think it weird that I bought a new phone now, with the bezelled design. I think it looks great though. And I am okay with the LCD display as I plan on using this phone for like 5 years if I can. Maybe by then Apple will have switched to microLED (one can hope!). SO yeah, the 8 Plus is awesome. I love Apple. Time to start saving for a watch, airpods, homepod, and macbook pro! I've been totally sucked in... [link] [comments] |

Has anyone else had repeated issues with their 'new' Macbook keyboard? Posted: 11 Apr 2018 05:50 PM PDT I got my Macbook closer to when it came out about 1.5 years ago and its been a miserable experience. The space bar keeps getting all loose and sticky, and it makes it impossible to type at a decent rate. I've had it fixed at the Apple Store twice now. The Genius will say "oh yeah that's a common problem, there's usually something just got stuck under the key," and then come back saying it needs to be sent in to replace the entire keyboard. This was annoying but not a huge deal under warranty, now I'm on my third issue with this its out of warranty and they want almost 600 bucks, even though their fix only lasted 6 months. WTF. I'm not guilty of any abuse besides using it a lot, I guess. No drops, spills, eating over it, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? I really wish I bought an Air. [link] [comments] |
Siri on HomePod censors explicit song names Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:07 PM PDT As the title says, I find it funny that Siri would censor a song name when reading it out loud. And that's even with the explicit content setting switched on. "Hey Siri, play Batshit by Sofi Tukker!" "Now playing beeeeep by Sofi Tukker" [link] [comments] |

Posted: 11 Apr 2018 06:31 PM PDT TL;DR: Apple replaced my 2.5 year old MacBook with a brand new 2017 model after repeated keyboard issues. In December of 2015 I bought a first generation MacBook - specifically the 512GB version with a 1.2 GHz processor. The computer served me pretty well until about a week before my Apple Care was due to expire, when I experienced my first keyboard issue. Specifically, the spacebar would get stuck and become non-responsive. I brought it in, was told that my top case would need to be replaced, and wisely purchased Apple Care. In the 16 months since that first top case replacement, I'd had to bring it back in three more times. The second time, it required a second replacement. The third, they were able to repair it without replacement, but I had to bring it in again today. I was once again told that a replacement was necessary, which considerably concerned me, because it's the same issue another time with now only about 8 months left on my warranty. I expressed this concern when the genius rep told me they had to set up another replacement. He went into the back to get that started, leaving me with a sinking feeling in my stomach - each time they had to do this replacement, it cost something like $800, which was fortunately covered by Apple Care. To my surprise, the genius rep came back out and told me they were replacing the laptop with a new one. They then produced a 2017 model with an i5 processor - a dramatic improvement from the 2015 version. The best news - a second generation keyboard and three more years of Apple Care. They certainly didn't have to do that. They could have replaced my top case again and maybe it would have lasted, or maybe I would've been back in there some time after the warranty expired. To me, this is an amazing, surprising resolution. I basically walked in with a failing 2015 laptop, and walked out with a new laptop that would've cost me $2300 (the price in Canada). I somehow doubt that most companies would do something like this. Yet another example of how Apple is amazing. [link] [comments] |
Is True Tone good for photo-editing/ color accuracy? Posted: 11 Apr 2018 08:41 PM PDT I enjoy True Tone because it's easy on the eyes, but in terms of colors, is it accurate to how that photo was taken? Would using it during a movie or editing a photo be recommended? [link] [comments] |

What do you think of the Apple section in Mark Zuckerberg's notes for testifying before Congress? Posted: 11 Apr 2018 02:07 AM PDT https://i.redd.it/egi0jlf096r01.jpg One question that comes to mind: is it a fair point that he thinks the Facebook platform was singled out for app data misuse, or is he drawing a false equivalence with Apple platforms? Difference in weight of two identical iPhone X Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:25 PM PDT My dad and I have the same iPhone X model (256GB, black, both with SIM). Out of curiosity I weighed them both and his was about 2g heavier then mine: a = 172.85±0.05 g b = 174.90±0.05 g (measured 10 times, 100% reproducable) I'm curious, is such a (relativly) big difference in weight normal and happens due to manifacturing "errors" (maybe flactuating quality of battery/alloy/glas)? Am I missing some screws? Or could it be simply some extra dirt and moisture on the surfaces and/or inside the speakers? Although 2g seems to be too much for that and both of them were completely dry for the last 50+ hours and look relativly clean to the naked eye. Has anyone access to two or more iPhone X of equal configuration and can provide some more data? I don't think my scale is particularly well calibrated, so only relative measurements would be needed. How much would the X plus cost roughly? Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:17 PM PDT I know it hasn't been announced yet and whatnot but it seems every year the prices are around the same or could be easily guessed? I never used a iPhone before but I am planning to wait for the iPhone X plus for the big screen 😀 Does anyone know a estimate price in UK sterlings? Appreciate the help :) [link] [comments] |
I had awesome service at Apple over the weekend. Posted: 11 Apr 2018 08:08 PM PDT I'm currently visiting my parents in New Jersey from the UK. I've been having trouble for a while with my Smart Keyboard for my iPad Pro - glitching, screen flickering, not working half the time, and it's way past its warranty. There aren't any Apple shops close by, they all require a bit of mission to get to and are always busy. Anyway, I walk into The Garden State Parkway mall Apple with my mom and speak to a lovely woman who helped my change my mom screen protector and her phone cover. I then enquired about replacing my cover and if they had any in stock and what they would cost. I explain the problem and she goes off to talk to her manger and comes back with a grin on her face and her manger had just told her to swap it out. I was not expecting that. So Alex, thank you for making my day😊 [link] [comments] |

A theory on ‘touchless control’ Posted: 11 Apr 2018 11:21 AM PDT Ever since touchscreens have been mainstream, I've always thought they would naturally one day be able to sense not only your touch, but when your finger is close to the display. This way you could recreate the experience of hovering your cursor on a PC. 'Touchless control' has recently been rumoured to be added to iPhone, and, if true, I think that is how that feature may manifest itself. I don't think people are realising how worthwhile an addition it could actually be. Possible Uses • Interface vitality – I honestly think the most impressive feature of hover capability could be its affect on the visuals of the interface. Move your finger towards icons, buttons or 'cards' and they would subtly pop out to greet you, then wiggle as you move your finger around, just like on Apple TV. Buttons would highlight and invite your tap. The interface would feel incredibly alive, responsive and delightful to use. Every other touchscreen would instantly feel lifeless and unresponsive. • Increased density of interface elements – UI elements can get larger as you approach them, so you can put more of them on the screen at once. Think of the dock magnification in macOS. • Hidden elements – No need to tap to hide and show controls in the video player; they'll just appear and disappear as you move your finger towards and away from the display. • Menus – icons and buttons that produce menus could be hovered over to show their contents, making it quicker and more fluid to open and navigate menus. This could be limited to buttons at the top of the display to avoid accidental activation. • Tooltips – if you don't know what a button or icon does, just hover close to it briefly to show a small description, just as we've had on PCs for years. This would be a big win for ease of use. • Repositioning the cursor – hover over text to see a cursor that allows you to precisely choose the insertion point, instead of having to tap and hold. Your finger would also not obscure the text as much, so they'd be no need to display a loupe. I understand 3D Touch on the keyboard already works very well, but many people don't know about that feature, and this would replace the more fiddly tap and hold process that still remains. • 'Touch free' gestures – if you're in a situation where you don't want to touch the screen, such as while baking, you could wave your hand in front of the screen to prevent auto-locking, and perhaps use a two finger swipe close to the display to scroll. • Creative uses – I'm sure developers will find myriad other ways to use this technology, such as proximity-based pitch modulation with digital instruments, alteration of stroke properties in digital painting apps and 3D modelling. Especially since Apple has added 3D Touch, this seems like a natural next step, and would make the name even more fitting (ironically, I had previously imagined naming a combination of pressure sensitivity and hover '3D Touch'). Just as Apple hailed pressure sensitivity as the next generation of multi-touch, hovering capability would be the next generation of 3D Touch. I think it has the potential to enable an even richer experience than that pressure sensitivity enabled. [link] [comments] |
