Macbook 12 inch worth getting even with sticky key issues?

I'd love to get one of the these but ever since I've been hearing about the keys sticking, it's really spurned me on even risking the amount of money apple is asking for them. I bought an Air about 5 years ago but I'd like to upgrade. However, this whole new generation has me entirely concerned about reliability (which shouldn't be the case with an apple product unfortunately).

Am I just paranoid or are they easily fixable that it's still worth it?

The last time I bought a MacBook was late 2008. I'm ready to upgrade. School me.

(warning: story of my life ahead)

In the fall of 2008 I had recently finished undergrad on a huge 15-inch Toshiba laptop. I got a job, and I was super stoked to finally buy myself a new computer. At the school newspaper, we had used Macs with Indesign and Photoshop, and I knew I wanted a Mac laptop.

Well, I remember waiting for the new Macbook to come out - and it was spectacular! They were cut from one piece of aluminum for God's sake! Johnny Ive's explanations and the product videos were epic. I was so happy. I had waited patiently, and Apple delivered the goods.

I think I spent 1300 or so on a basic Macbook. It served me well for years. Eventually, it started to age. I added RAM (now running 8 gigs!). I put in an SSD. I replaced battery. I've also wiped it once or twice, to get a fresh start.

Amazingly, my late-2008 Macbook is still chugging away. Ten years later, my little Macbook still does the basics well. Hell, I even use it to edit video in Abode Premiere! Sure, the fans sounds like a jet engine, and it gets hot, and it jams up once in a while, but what do you expect when it's running at its limits?

Well, now it's 2018. It's not that I want to get a new laptop, but it seems like I should. I'm starting a career in journalism, and my laptop is my main tool. Photos, audio, video. Word processing. Web. Spreadsheets. My Macbook can do all this, but … perhaps not as well as a new computer would. Those couple second delays add up over time.

Suffice it to say, I depend on my computer.

So... in my own patient way, I've been shopping. But I realize that my computer knowledge is inadequate. Here's what I know for sure.

    • RAM is good, so I want 16 gigs
    • HD space is good, so I want 512 gigs at least

But what about the processor? What about the video card? These are beyond my knowledge.

What I'm looking at now is the 2015 refurb Macbook Pros. Something like this: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/G0RF3LL/A/refurbished-154-inch-macbook-pro-28ghz-quad-core-intel-i7-with-retina-display

Here are the reasons I'm considering a 3-year-old computer:

    • USB ports - I use external hard-drives. I upload photos. I may plug in a mouse. I like old-fashioned USB ports.

    • I'm skeptical of the touchbar - I like physical buttons for volume - and the escape key. I hate gimmicks and the touchbar feels like one.

    • The new keyboard ?!

I'm hoping I'm not the only one a bit confused by the current array of Mac laptops. I'd appreciate any advice this subreddit can give. Perhaps this thread could be useful for others who are looking to upgrade. Links to learn more about things like video cards and processors and performance are appreciated.

Basically I want a beast of a computer that will serve me reliably for the next 10 years. halp !

[Help] Windows 7 on Macbook Air 2017

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 09:47 AM PST

Recently i decided i want to install Windows 7 on my MBA. Yeah, i know. You could say "why w7, w10 is better". I wanted to install it via bootcamp but since bootcamp is supporting W7 no more, i tried to edit Info.plist and i've manage to "unlock" installing Windows 7 option. Even thought i got "install windows 7 option", i still see error "choose windows 8 64-bit or later blablabla". I've tried every combination to install w7 with bootcamp with no success. It doesnt even creating bootable usb. So i give up messing with bootcamp. I've found a tutorial to install windows 7 using winclone app. I got windows 7 ultimate x64 winclone image. I created partition for windows. I installed it successfully. The problem is when i try to boot into the windows ( no matter if i choose it with boot manager, startup disk, external bootloader or recovery) all i see is black screen. Only thing i can do is to force shutdown my laptop. When i copied bootcamp partition into VMware Fusion it boots up normally. During the first boot in Fusion i got chkdsk and first setup just like standard installation. It just wont boot up normally like windows 10 before on bootcamp.

My question is: Is there any way to boot w7? Is it a hardware "thing" that doesnt allow me to boot w7?

Edit: i tried to repeat process on Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra. Same result - fail. Edit 2: dont ask stupid question like "why dont you set up windows 7 on virtual box or parallels".

MBP with Touch Bar doesn’t start

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:37 AM PST

My MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar didn't start this morning. It worked perfectly yesterday and I haven't done all that much on i lately besides browsing the web and watching YouTube. Does anyone else have the same problem and does someone know what to do? I have tried the 5 steps Apple suggests on their website but nothing happend. Am I screwed?

    Recovering deleted Word 2011 file?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:30 AM PST

Hello. A friend of mine accidentally deleted a Word document off her desktop on a Macbook running El Capitan. I've checked the Autosaving feature in word it is set to save every 10 min. This function is supposed to save files to "/Users/"your user name"/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/Office 2011 AutoRecovery" - But the AutoRecovery-folder is not there, even though I have shown hidden folders. However I am able to open Word, choose "open", search for "AutoRecovery" the folder shows but seems to be no content. Are these just tmp files being deleted? I have to be honest and say, that I am not a Mac user or expert in any way - So maybe I just don't know what I'm doing.

If anybody has any suggestions I am willing to try it. If you need anymore info I am happy to give it.

    Thanks.
