Selling a water damaged Macbook Pro

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 08:36 PM PST

    Hi there,

Recently I kicked a glass of water onto my Macbook Pro and it is fried. When I turn it on I hear short bursts of a whirring sound but nothing else, and no display. It still charges fine.

I just sold it online, however I am nervous now because I never got to reset it and it has all my personal information on it, accounts logged in etc.

My question is, if the buyer repairs it, will they be able to access this content? Is there anyway I can perform a reset without being able to turn it on? Is there a piece of hardware (like a memory card or something) I can remove?? (Sorry I'm not very tech savvy)

    Thanks in advance

Macbook users who are running out of storage, what the heck do you put on your SSD's?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 07:29 PM PST

I am getting a new Macbook Pro, and am wondering how much of a SSD will be enough for the next 5-8 years I plan to keep it. I am transitioning from Windows, so I am not too familiar with how OSX handles storage. I heard that iPhone backups take up a lot of space, but other than that is there anything that a former Windows user should watch out for?

Is screen not waking after lifting lid normal after 6 hours of sleep?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 06:09 PM PST

If I close my MacBook and reopen the lid, the screen wakes up just fine, it just doesn't work when I leave my MacBook on my desk overnight. I have to click the trackpad once after lifting the lid up to wake the screen, is this normal behaviour?

I have the MacBook Pro 13inch 2017 with 16gbs of RAM

2017 Mbp 13 faster than PC?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 05:34 PM PST

I am hesitant to switch to Mac for my new laptop. Money does not matter in this purchase for me. Would a 2017/2018 MacBook Pro 13 outperform an equal spec windows laptop? For me, responsiveness and snappiness are very important, and I want something very quick and nimble in easy/moderate tasks. Would a 2017/2018 MacBook Pro suffice?

    Microsoft Excel performance on Bootcamp?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 04:49 PM PST

    (Early 2016, 1.1Ghz m3)

Hi all, I bought the Macbook for my wife to use with Microsoft Office (I know... bad choice I realized after the fact). The performance is rather laggy on OS X particularly when performing filtering on large spreadsheets. I was wondering how much of a performance gain I will get from installing Windows 10 on Bootcamp then Office on top of that? Has any one tried this? She does like the form factor and the travebility so we'd like to salvage it if at all possible.

Anyone elses Macbook not responsive for a minute or two when they turn it on?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 01:00 PM PST

I have a 2015 macbook pro that I've had with no issues since it came out. Recently however, I notice that about half of the time I open it to use it when its sleeping the screen comes on briefly then dims out again almost instantly. None of the keys or the mouse pad produce any response, the only thing I can do is close it and open it again and then it seems fine and everything is normal. Anyone else experience this? I'm on the latest update, wondering if it's something I could be doing wrong.

MacBook Pro model A1278 not charging

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 02:20 PM PST

So this has been going on for a few weeks now but up until today I've been able to get it working again. My computer is currently dead, but it won't charge when I plug it in. I've tried basically everything suggested on google switching outlets to cleaning the port, and before it died I did a smc reset but I have no clue where I should go from here. Has anyone else had this problem, and do you think it's a problem with my cord or my battery?

    Should I get a Macbook?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 08:01 AM PST

Hi, I'm thinking of picking up either a Macbook or a Macbook Pro. On Apple UK they have refurbished 2016 Macbooks for about £909 just now, which seems the most budget friendly way to buy a Mac (I've never own an apple computer before, but love the iphone).

My question(s) just how powerful is the Macbook?

Our probable use: Browsing internet, Some editing for large image files (nothing to intensive and nothing professional), Watching movies etc on 4k tv from laptop (movies do not have to be 4k, but certainly full HD), Remoting onto Raspberry Pi to manage remote hard drive(s) Some light coding etc (no serious dev work though), Some gaming (honestly, if it can run Crusader Kings 2 thats all I need)

How responsive/fast would a Macbook seem to someone coming to it from an i3, 8gb ram windows device?

How future proof is the Macbook - I'd prefer this to be my main laptop for 4-5 years.

Is there much bloat with Apple OS over time? (Via updates etc)

Or is the Pro, extra cost and all, the better option?

Spilled beer on my macbook, will it be fine?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 01:17 PM PST

I just spilled some beer on my brand new Macbook Pro, I immediately wiped all the beer off and wiped the entire keyboard and bottom-side of the laptop with wet wipes. It's still working perfectly, but is my laptop inevitably fucked? Should I take it to the apple store?

2017 13" MBP Base Model Users: How is it treating you so far?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 12:09 AM PST

How are the 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM treating you? Do you wish you had gotten more storage and more RAM?

I have a custom build PC at home and I need a reliable, durable, and sufficiently-powerful laptop for writing, photography (Lightroom & Photoshop), InDesign and hobbyist level video-making (Adobe Premiere & After Effects).

I have just been wondering if the 2017 13" MBP base model will be sufficient for doing occasional "bigger" tasks (such as video editing) on the go.

    Macbook 2016 screen cracked

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 04:45 AM PST

Hi reddit. I had my smartphone lying on top of my macbook keyboard when it was on my lap. I then moved a little and the phone accidentally slid down and "nudged" the bottom section of the display. This resulted in the screen getting cracked and I did also get artifacts on the screen.

    please see photo: https://imgur.com/a/MsbrK

When I say nudged, I mean that it barely touched it, but it seems like it was enough to have an impact on the display.

Is the display this weak in general or did I get a bad sample with lots of "stress" in the glass? I have hit all my other laptop displays with much more force without any negative effects, so would be nice to know if the macbook screen really is this weak.

Seems like it's quite expensive to repair, but still worth it I guess.. Just sucks that I wasn't more careful..

    Noisy MacBook

Anything I can do much to stop overheating/extreme heat? (Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 03:06 AM PST

I've been using this Macbook lightly as a "the laptop that lives in this room" type of laptop. Though however, it suffers from high temperatures of around 50 degrees celsius just running idle with no applications open, 70 degrees lightly browsing the web, and 80-90+ with any intensive programs (Photoshop mainly.)

It's basically the only reason why I've set SMC Fan Control to have it at default 4000rpm to make sure it doesn't burn my hands whenever I rest it upon the keyboard.

I've read some threads around in r/apple that says redoing the thermal paste might work, but I'm looking for some other solutions that's not so 'break down entire macbook' like. Thanks.
