Best way to clean MacBook Pro 2017 keyboard?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 03:17 PM PST

EDIT: This is just for dust/dirt under the keys. I didn't spill or anything.

I've seen the apple official guide for the 12 inch MacBook with butterfly keys, where they hold it up with one hand (not really gonna work with my 15 inch) and spray it with the canned air. Is this the preferred way of cleaning these bigger machines too? I did have a couple questions anyway.

Do you use the straw from the canned air, or just the bare nozzle? How far away do you hold the air? Is it safe to use the air to clean out the hinge as well?

Macbook 4,1 not showing bootable partitions on external hard drives in startup manager

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 06:35 PM PST

I've been trying to get this working for a week or so.

Bought two external hard drives - Seagate Expansion 3TB, WD Essentials 3TB - trying to have separate install partitions on one of them for Mac OS X Lion and Windows 10. Tried a bunch different times with different size partitions from 4GB to 16GB on both hard drives, reset PRAM and SMC countless times, still neither of them will display in the Startup Manager, but they mount and work perfectly once the OS is booted.

I've wiped them both a couple times and backed up files back and forth taking days collectively, they're both GUID partition mapped with HFS+ journaled partitions, except the Windows partition I've tried both FAT32 and NTFS.

I've tried dd using the Terminal in OS X for the Windows ISO, and it completes successfully, but doesn't show in Startup Manager and Disk Utility won't even mount the partition.

I can get the Mac OS X installer to work on a 16GB flash drive, but I want it on one of the externals, preferably the Seagate because it's powered while the WD is portable.

I've also tried making an install USB in Windows but it won't take the external despite the compatible format, only the flash drive.

Anyone know what's going on here? I'm going in circles trying to find a solution in forums with Google searches.

Best way to maintain battery health?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 02:35 PM PST

Many years ago I fried the battery of my old laptop (HP) in just over a year. I recently purchased a 2017 MBP and I'm looking to not repeat that experience. What's the best way to keep my battery in good working order for the longest period of time? Is using the laptop plugged into the wall bad? Should I be charging the laptop when I'm not using it and only using the battery?

My early 2008 white unibody MacBook won’t recognize its replacement battery. I have tried almost all of what has popped up on google, anybody know what’s up?

Macbook 2015 - dual external displays

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 01:15 PM PST

I have a 2015 12" macbook and I am trying to setup two external displays. One of which is an apple cinema display and the other a new hp. I am using an ultimate hyperdrive usbc hub. The cinema display is connected to the hub via thunderbolt 2 and the hp monitor via hdmi. When both monitors are on, I get the following message on the HP – "input signal out of range! Current Mode: H = 74.1khz, V=60Hz Change Mode to: 1920 x 1080 60Hz Display going to sleep in 30 seconds"

the HP display then goes to sleep.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

MacBook Pro shuts down in sleep mode

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 12:27 PM PST

I was in class today I open my MBP from sleep and it boots up the apple logo and then an error message. I didn't think much of it but then it happened multiple times throughout the day. I am running the latest OS, High Sierra 10.13.3 and have a 2017 Macbook Pro. I could post the crash report in the comments if that helps.

Spilt white wine on MacBook Air

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 10:12 AM PST

Over the weekend a friend of mine accidentally spilt wine on my keyboard.. It didn't immediately shut down, but I turned it off as soon as possible. I've had it tired off since the incident (saturday night) & want to know what I should do. I called a local repair shop ave they said it'd be $900, so that doesn't seem like an option.

Should I just try to turn it on and see what happens, or do I need to get it cleaned or repaired?

If I do choose to turn it on, is there any chance of it working?

Black fumes on Macbook Display [Help Needed]

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 09:34 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/2miwK

It's a 2016 Macbook Pro with Touchbar. I was trying to close the display when the display's bottom goes all rainbow-ish and these black fumes appear. I tried restarting, changing display res, resetting PRAM nothing worked.

Is this a problem with the display hardware? Help.
