    iMessage "caller id"

    Posted: 19 Jan 2018 09:13 AM PST

I don't really know what else to call it in the post title but let me explain. I recently switched to an Android phone but I use a MacBook Pro at work and I love that I can still use it for iMessage with my wife, father in law, friends, family, etc... Basically almost everyone I know has an iPhone. Now that I made the switch though, when I message then from my Mac, the message shows my icloud.com email address which no one has in their contacts for me so they ask who I am. Is it possible to somehow have it send my name instead of the email address?

Mac stuck on bootup screen after failing to install mac os high sierra PLEASE HELP

    Posted: 19 Jan 2018 11:04 AM PST

I tried updating to macOS high sierra but it failed because something was missing. After that, i had to hard restart my mac and it would load all the way on the apple logo start up screen but it would stay there. I did internet recovery but all i got when trying to reinstall el capitan was "you cant upgrade this version of osx because a newer version is installed" and i cant boot up in safe mood either for some reason. Please help. I dont know what to do and it is very frustrating.

    How to encrypt flash drive?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2018 10:07 AM PST

    Hello

I have a Macbook Air running High Sierra. I also have a SanDisk 120 GB flash drive that is encrypted. I would like to do encrypt another flash drive but I forget how to do it and google is giving me lots of conflicting/outdated/confusing information. My main question is how do I do this step by step? I have a few other side questions.

    1. I remember I used Disk Utility and went to File > New Disk from Image (in this case the flash drive). From there everything else was done by the computer. I assume this process is still done this way?

    1. Do I need to 'erase' the drive first? I hear the drive format is different than what macOS usually uses for removable drives. Do I still need to do this before anything else? This is a brand new flash drive fresh out the box.

    1. I would like the drive to be able to take on more files in the future (aka read/write). However my experience with this option is mixed. I remember having a read/write encryption and it didnt work. Maybe Im remembering wrong and Im an idiot. Maybe the read/write option doesnt do a good job. Does the read/write option for disk utility in High Sierra work?

    1. In Disk Utility, when I am choosing the type of encryption, the name of the file, etc. it asks me 'Where'. As in where does the computer save the file that will be encrypted. I assume I choose the flash drive for this option yes?

Thanks so much. So sorry if these are really obvious. Thanks for all your help!

Performance of High Sierra on a 2011 MBP?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2018 11:54 AM PST

I have a Late 2011 13" MBP with a SSD which I've upgraded to 8GB of RAM. It came with Lion, and thus far I have upgraded it through to Sierra (well I skipped Mavericks and Yosemite). It performs just as well today as it did when it was new, despite the newer software. I'm talking 15 seconds between powering on and it being fully usable, apps opening nearly instantly, shutdowns in under 10 seconds, no strain with many apps open. (The only issue is it gets hot when doing something processor heavy.) When it comes to High Sierra, is there any performance slowdown (boot times, general use) compared to Sierra?

I thought with Sierra I'd quit while I was ahead, afraid about a performance hit or some new bug (my current OS is almost bug-free) or some problems from the new file system. Mut then with Meltdown and Spectre I thought maybe I should upgrade.

So, anyone know about performance on a computer as old as mine?
