My iPhone 6s experienced a whopping 75% performance boost after replacing the battery Posted: 18 Jan 2018 12:23 PM PST My iPhone 6s was suffering from ridiculously sluggish performance. I thought iOS 11 was too much for the hardware to handle, so I considered upgrading to an iPhone X. Then I read about the whole throttling controversy and decided to try a battery replacement. I ran a benchmark on my iPhone 6s (which had a 9 month old battery) using Geekbench before and after the replacement. Before the replacement, single core performance was 1451. After the battery replacement, single core performance went up to 2536. That's a whopping 75% increase in performance. My phone feels several generations newer! I wonder how many people could've just replaced their battery instead of going out and buying a new device. Apple is truly a scumbag company for exploiting their customers like this (they knew exactly what they were doing). [link] [comments] |
Apple really needs to refresh the entry level iMac and Mac Mini. Posted: 18 Jan 2018 04:11 PM PST Sorry if this isn't the right place for this but I feel Apple really needs a refresh for the low end iMac and Mac Mini. I am the Mac administrator at work, most of the time users order MBPs or upgrade iMacs with a SSD or at the very least a fusion drive. We just had a few iMacs and Mac Minis ordered for a lab, they just wanted to go with the cheapest Mac they could for whatever they are doing. I took them out of the box, turned them on and prepared to go through the Apple setup. The amount of time it took from turning it on to get to the language selection screen was crazy. Going through the whole setup was so slow. I thought maybe I got a lemon but when I started setting the others up I realized that's just the way they are. Our Macs are managed but the slowness was very real even before the DEP portion of the setup. When I setup a MBP, it seems lightning fast when setting it up and even after DEP enrollment has occurred and config profiles and policies have been applied. I'm not sure exactly what it is that causes this, maybe it's the mechanical hard drive, maybe it's the processor although an i5 should be a bit more snappy than this. Sorry if this post is uninteresting, I just needed to vent somewhere about the quality of the lower ends Macs. I am sure this may be well know, I just really haven't experienced it until now. If you ever considered using vinyl skin with your IPhone X Posted: 18 Jan 2018 11:50 AM PST I just received iPhone anniversary skin and it looks awesome, really nice to touch but kinda hard to apply. Still looks like it was worth it. [link] [comments] |
My 1080p 30fps videos are twice as big as 60fps videos of the same length and resolution Posted: 18 Jan 2018 01:35 PM PST It really doesn't make sense. iPhone 6Plus: 30s 1080p 60fps: 34MB (8844kbps) 30s 1080p 30fps (29.97): 58,6MB (15,3Mbps) So when I film in 30fps I have twice the bitrate for half of the framerate (I filmed the same spot, with the same lighting). I see in the metadata that the 60fps video uses AVC High@L4.2 and the 30fps video uses AVC High@L4. Does someone know a good explanation? I thought 30fps would be better quality since it's half the frames per second, but here I have four times as much data per frame. To clarify: I don't care about the data, I just want to find the best setting for the highest quality [link] [comments] |
Apple has amazing customer service Posted: 18 Jan 2018 05:02 PM PST I went into the apple store with my old macbook to get a quote to fix my computer without apple care and Not only did the specialist stay over time to help me. Apple automatically pays for their over time and they was able to fix my computer and push the os back to el captain for FREE. This has made my night and I think this is a lesson for everyone always go to the apple store with ANY PROBLEMS you have because you might walk out not paying anything [link] [comments] |
Wait for the new MacBook Pro or get one with free headphones? Posted: 18 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST Since I'm in the Southern Hemisphere, Apple is offering a "Back to School" deal where I get a free pair of Beats Solo 3 headphones with a MacBook Pro purchase. This is great because I listen to music very often. Now, I've been hearing that that the new MacBook Pro's this year will have quad-cores (for the 13" which I intend to buy). I need to buy a MacBook Pro before starting my Ph.D. in the fall of 2018 (northern hemisphere fall). This is a significant boost and I'm wondering whether I should wait for the quad cores to maybe come out before the fall semester or I should get them with the headphones right now. I'd love to hear your opinions. [link] [comments] |
iOS 11, is it time to upgrade? Posted: 18 Jan 2018 11:14 PM PST I've been holding out on upgrading my iPhone 7 to iOS 11 due to all the bugs. Is it time to take the plunge? How is it now? [link] [comments] |
Exercise app on apple watch keeps freezing and doesn't load Posted: 18 Jan 2018 12:33 PM PST Ever since the last update I have been unable to use the exercise app on my apple watch. Not a huge deal but very discouraging. I like to keep track of how far I run/ heart rat/ etc. Whenever I go to use the app its frozen and won't respond when i touch it. If I restart my watch it'll sometimes work but that's a horrible work around. Anybody else experience this and know how to fix it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Do you use stock apps on your Mac/iPhone or replace them with 3rd party alternatives? Posted: 18 Jan 2018 01:07 PM PST What stock apps do you use and what you replacing? Talking about Mail/Calendar/Notes etc. Just curious! I have replaced:
Everything else is stock when it comes to basics. [link] [comments] |
