Best options for Disk Recovery [macOS] and failure prevention Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:39 PM PST I have just had my 4th HDD fail within a year. I'm so angry (P.S., they've all been WD external drives). I'm midway through trying to install El Capitan on an older MacBook Pro. The machine won't power on, so I pulled the HDD out and plugged it into a Mac mini so that I can wipe the drive and reinstall macOS to sell the machine 'as-is'.
Disk Utility won't repair it, so I tried DiskWarrior which "successfully" recovered the drive and tells me there's 80 files, 21 folders, but when I open the recovered partition there's nothing there and apparently is 464.59/465GB available. What's causing all of my disk problems? Does anyone know how to use DiskWarrior? Do drives just go bad from lying around? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 05:24 PM PST What is the best way (extention and size) to put the most on my ipod nano 7Gen and listen to normal/decent sound without it takes to much storage. How can i convert 128 to 320kbps? Thanx a lot for helping me out [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:00 PM PST I bought my girlfriend an 8GB stick of RAM and a 240GB SSD to replace her HDD in her mid-2012 Macbook Pro. After trying to format the SSD in disk utility on bootup I kept getting problems so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. I cloned the HDD onto the SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner and included the recovery partition. Everything copied to the SSD without a hitch. But when I try to boot up with it internally, holding option to select a disk doesn't show the SSD. When I go into disk utility it shows the SSD, but the partition is named different from what I formatted it as. I know the SATA cable is ok because the original HDD boots fine from it. Right now, I can boot from the original HDD internally, or with the external enclosure. I can boot from the SSD externally, but not internally. Under disk utility when I have the SSD connected internally, when I click on info for the SSD the "Bootable?" info says "No", but when it's connected externally and I click on info "Bootable?" is "Yes". So it seems like the SATA cable is fine, since it does detect the SSD, and it will run just fine on the HDD. The SSD is fine, since I can boot from it externally and everything works normally. And those seems to be the common problems I see on forums; either the SATA cable is bad, or the SSD is bad, but both seem fine from what I can tell. [link] [comments] |

Crash on wake error, Macbook AIR Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:02 PM PST Macbook Air 6,2 OS 10.13.2 , 250GB FLASH HD Have had reoccuring problems with the computer crashing on wake, sometimes with the flashing folder+question mark, sometimes without, usually after longer sleeps. reached a happy medium where I was able to modify pmset to mitigate the frequency of the issues, but just got another crash: UUID: Unknown UUID 2017-12-31 22:42:50 -0500 Sleep Entering Sleep state due to '': Using AC (Charge:0%) is this a hardware error or is there a software fix? My previous sleep failures have put out error codes, in pmset, as UUID: Unknown UUID 2017-12-30 00:03:05 -0500 Failure Sleep Failure [code:0x11105000400001F]: Any clues? please let me know what other information ya might need and thanks in advance. Forgot my password to unlock my iPad Pro Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:52 PM PST So I forgot what password I put on my iPad pro since I have been using the touch id and did not know that restarting the iPad would require me to use my password. Is there any way for me to bypass it? I am already up to 15 minutes disabled on it. Am I screwed? Am I going to have to return it to the store? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:39 PM PST However when I connect the same charger to a different laptop, the charger light comes on, so I then disconnect it from the other laptop to the no power laptop. Boom the light on the Magsafe stays on a solid green despite the battery being disconnected. I tried jumping it with the power pads and that did not power the laptop on. I connected the battery, did the same aforementioned procedure in order to get a light on the Magsafe and still no power to the MacBook. What is the problem here? In no instance does jumping the power pads works. [link] [comments] |
2010 iMac - worth upgrading RAM? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:25 AM PST I've got a 21.5" mid 2010 iMac currently fitted with 4x 2GB RAM. Will I see much benefit upping it to, say, 16GB? Only really use it for web browsing, Office, etc. Have already replaced the original hard drive for an SSD without any real noticeable improvement in performance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:36 PM PST iPhone 7+ iOS 11.2.1, Macbook on High Sierra 10.13.2, iTunes 12.7.2.58, active Apple Music subscription I have a lot of custom tracks on my phone, some music some not, none of which are on iTunes or Apple Music. Since you're unable to manage tracks with iCloud Music Library enabled for whatever reason, I turned off the feature and deleted everything as a test. I added just the tracks I'm positive aren't on iTunes, enabled the library, select Keep Music, bam they get deleted. There's no pattern to it that I can tell. It deletes some albums from an artist but not all, and I can't put them back unless I disable the library feature which is a pain in and of itself. How can I fix this? This whole experience has been very frustrating and unintuitive. EDIT: wrong version # on iTunes [link] [comments] |

I think I broke a drive, cant find out how to repair it. Posted: 31 Dec 2017 05:50 PM PST It was formatted in FAT32, but when using Disk Utility erase option I clicked NTFS(Tuxera), thinking it was the format its going to format into. It kinda works, but it gives me 'cant mount disk' without a visible error. When I try to erase it in another format it gives me Repairing file system. Volume is already unmounted. How to Block Porn on Admin Account on High Sierra Posted: 31 Dec 2017 05:20 PM PST Hi there! So I've got porn completely blocked within Safari (thanks to awesome extensions) but I still have stupid Safari... which because Apple locks down the OS so dang much I can't alter it. In the past, I just renamed a file within the Package Contents and it worked... Here's what I've tried, with no success: 1. Rename Safari (even through terminal) 2. Find a good extension like the one I use for Chrome... 3. Change permissions for Safari 4. Terminal commands of renaming, etc. 5. I DON'T want to have to use another Parental Controlled Account. Can anyone please help?? Thank you!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 04:43 PM PST Hi, I'll try to briefly explain my problem: my laptop broke and I didn't have a backup file, so I lost all of my music, which is also on my iPhone. How can I transfer all my music from iPhone to iTunes on the new laptop? It's over 5500 songs, so downloading it again from the start isn't an option. I tried various programs which allow me to transfer a limited amount of songs for free. Any help is well accepted! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Mac Pro Black Screen and Cursor After Login Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:47 PM PST This is a 2008 Mac Pro that's refusing to boot and frustrating me lol! As the description says, I'm running into a black screen after inputting my password. The issue persists in safe mode and even after booting into the recovery partition and verifying the disc. The volume appears to be ok yet will not boot. I'm really kicking myself right now because this is such a fresh install and the build left me with little space so I was stingy and guess what I didn't do! You prolly guessed it, I didn't make a backup! I have 2 other drives, 1 external and 1 internal. These arguably have more important data on them than the boot drive so I can't just erase them for making an image. I'm out of ideas at this point. I think I will buy another external terabyte drive and backup to that. Still not totally clear on the steps needed to do that inside disk utility. So if you guys have any other tricks I can try let me know! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:42 PM PST Okay, this has been months going on. I have a late 2011 MBP that got water damaged. Replaced the battery, MagSafe plug, and logic board. I've been having logic board issues where it'll randomly artifact and freeze and shut down and then do the three beeps. I tried to get a refund on the logic board, but to no avail. So I bought a cheap Windows computer so I could have something to use. Windows 10 is garbage and it takes over 10 minutes to open Chrome because of all the background processes that it runs for Jobs knows what reason. So I need to get my MBP working again. I read somewhere that I tried reloading the OS, and I've been trying. But the same artifact freeze shut down beeps thing would happen before I could even get my Apple ID signed in. I'm quite frustrated. Does anyone have any ideas? Am I going to need to get another logic board? [link] [comments] |
Is there any way to do a forward delete on an ipad with an external keyboard? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:41 AM PST On mac, fn + backspace is forward delete. That deletes letters in front of the cursor. I have a bluetooth keyboard for my ipad pro which has an fn key. So, it would be really nice to be able to do the same thing. But, the ipad doesn't seem to support it. Is there any workaround? It's a big part of how I write. [link] [comments] |
Two users, one photos library? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 02:42 PM PST Hi all, My parents have their own iphones and macs, but they would prefer to have all of their photos (both past and ones they continue to take) merged into one shared photos library that is also backed up to the cloud, all automatically. Is that possible? It doesn't have to be through photos or any apple service, they're more just concerned with making sure their photos are all in one place and securely backed up. Thanks! Best place/site in the UK for 4s parts? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:42 AM PST Hi After this battery debate, I'm ready to restore my 4s to its former glory. I also want to clean up it's smashed back. Where can I get a battery and rear glass panel from here in the UK? Happy New Year too, r/applehelp. You've come in handy for me this year. [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to revert back to the old 2FA system? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 02:20 PM PST I'm really not comfortable with the new 2FA system, I don't think that having any "trusted" device display your 2FA code is a good idea. I would much rather have it be the old system where it would be sent directly to your iPhone. Is there any chance that I could go back to that system? I noticed with iOS 11 that we got the option to get our backup code back, which is nice, but I'd still rather use the old system entirely. [link] [comments] |
Macbook Pro shutting off randomly and shows dead. Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:57 PM PST I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro running Sierra 10.12.6. Lately, it has been shutting off, then turning on when I hit the space bar, and then turning off and showing dead at high battery percents. Let's say it does this at 50%. Once I plug it in, it will turn back on fine and return to 50%. Option clicking the battery shows battery health as normal, and here is my coconutBattery report. I have tried resetting SMC and PRAM, with no success. This problem is driving me insane, if anyone has anything to try that would be great. Also posted here on /r/macbook. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:24 AM PST I've had my Apple Pencil for a little over a year and I love it! But lately, it seems I'm having to reconnect it a lot more. It used to stay connected until the battery died or if I hadn't used it in a couple of days. Now, my iPad loses the pencil every time the iPad sleeps. Sometimes, it even loses it while I'm using it. Is this happening to anyone else? I keep it charged and ready to use, so the pencil doesn't have a low battery. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
(Macbook Air) Safari opening apps after installing High Sierra Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:33 AM PST My friend has a Macbook Air (2014) and recently installed High Sierra. Ever since, when they type an address into Safari, it takes them to the website but also opens an app that starts with the same letter as the website. For example, if they type in Facebook, Facetime opens. Is there any way to stop this from happening? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Contacts not syncing between my iPhone and macbook air. Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:07 PM PST The issue: Phone numbers I add into my contacts on my phone don't populate onto my computer. If I try to add the number into the contacts on my computer, it adds another contact slot onto my phone (under whatever name I assigned from my computer). Deleting either duplicate contact will delete the corresponding contact on my apple device. I do not want a duplicate contact for every person I need to add into my contacts. Some context: 2015 Macbook Air 13 inch, 500 GB (35.75 GB free), OSX 10.13.1 Current phone: iPhone X, 64 GB (2GB free), IOS 11.1.2, AT&T Carrier Previous phone: iPhone 6s, 64 GB, IOS 11.1.1 (I still have this phone, but am selling it) My attempted solution: So this problem existed between my 6s and computer before I upgraded my phone, but my contact issue still persists. Before I upgraded, I brought my devices into the apple store and confronted them with this issue. The gentleman at the genius bar said that my contacts couldn't sync because there wasn't enough space on the computer (At the time I had ~90 GB available). Also, in iCloud settings, it shows contacts are supposed to sync. If you need more info, I can probably provide you with that. Unfortunately apple hasn't been a big help with this issue. Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:50 PM PST Just bought a new MacBook (Retina, mid 2015) maxed out with the 2.8GHz core i7 processor. My primary question is if anybody else with the same MBP + Proc has observed fans staying high while doing basic things (i.e. watching YouTube). I know a faster, more powerful processor can result in higher temps when under load, but it seems this proc tends to just run hot, which keeps fans running, which might be eating away at battery life. Interested to know if anybody has had a similar experience with this model/configuration. [link] [comments] |
