As a guy with little control of his left hand... Thank you Apple.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 09:25 PM PDT

THANK YOU APPLE! I am currently in tears because I have never been able to text fast due to only being able to use my right hand to type. It is such a HUGE thing to remove this barrier for me. I am so happy and it may be a small detail to most but oh my goodness I have never felt so free. Stairs may be hard to climb. I may not be able to cut with a knife. but you implementing this detail makes life a bit easier for a phone addicted teenager.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

How many east coasters are waking up at 3am tonight?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 08:32 AM PDT

I'm setting my alarm for 2:45 am to try to order iPhone X.

Who else is doing the same?

Also, I'll be trying through the Verizon store, not the Apple Store. How about you guys?

After using the new Apollo app...

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 12:05 PM PDT

I have been using the dark mode and wow is it perfect. Especially with how quickly you can switch to light mode if so desired. After getting used to the dark interface, the light one looks so much more jarring and unpleasant.

With that said, if iOS ever gets a system wide dark mode, I will probably never switch back to light.

Anyone think the rumored low available stock on the iPhone X is over exaggerated?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 07:44 PM PDT

I'm skeptical that Apple is planting stories within the media to increase chatter and demand for the iPhone X by saying that stock is extremely low and recommending that people order ASAP on Friday at 12:01am. Could this be an effort to hype demand and attempt to reach a record number of preorders? What if shipping times don't slip until an hour or two after preorders open?

I'm not suggesting this is true but I thought it was an interesting thought.

Can anyone who did the iPhone 8 iUP pre-approval process let us iPhone X people know what to expect?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 06:46 PM PDT

I got the pre-approval stuff done, but I don't know what happens when the store comes back up on my phone. I push the banner at the top and then what? Does it go to my cart and I checkout like normal? Does it just skip to the end?

    What am I in for?

Edit: for anyone who happens to come to this topic later, hi! The answer is you hit two buttons, one to confirm you want to finish the approval process, the second to confirm your order. Doesn't punt you to a bag and you can select delivery or store pickup. Easiest process I've ever seen, I've got release day delivery!

    Apple Maps Illegal U-Turns

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 02:24 PM PDT

In the state of Oregon, it's illegal to u-turn at electrical signals. Apple Maps doesn't seem to know this information so I constantly get a route that leads me to wasting 10+ minutes of time where I'm currently located. There are many, many routes to work and I'm trying to use the map app to figure out which route is quickest(varies with traffic so I use GPS every time) without illegally u-turning, but I only get the one option.

Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off u-turns completely? Or have a solution for me? Google Maps also suggests illegal u-turns.

    Thanks!

I'd like to praise something about the iPhone that still fascinates me over the years about restoring from old backups

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 07:46 AM PDT

The first iPhone I had was the 3Gs in 2010 and I've had every single iPhone ever since. I started backing up my phone to iTunes in 2012 and I've been restoring every time I get a new phone from the same backup. My current 7 Plus now has SMSs from 2012 and WhatsApp texts from 2013 that my 4S had. My backup has been through 7 phones and works like magic.

I've probably restored my phone from backups over 20 times (changing phones, updating the software before OTA Updates, cracking screens and having replacements, etc.. and I honestly don't think there is any other software that can handle 5 years of restores on the same device and still run smoothly without any compatibility issues.

I don’t understand people who do not use TouchID.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 09:45 PM PDT

Why bother typing that password when you can just press/place your finger on the home button. TouchID is so fast and convenient.

Apple Adds New 12-inch MacBook Leather Sleeve to Online Accessory Store

    iOS 12 wishlist

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 06:10 AM PDT

I would really like to see dynamic app icons. For example the clock and calendar app. The home screen feels pretty dull and I think this will add functionality and give the home screen more life. If the weather app showed the current weather conditions that would be a nice addition.

What other features would you like implemented on the next big update?

    Hi,

So with the recent Snapchat update I see the time, battery and cellular signal on the top. Do you guys think this is to accommodate for the iPhone x ears?

PSA: Don't forget to order an Apple Leather or Silicone Case with your pre-order. They sell out fast.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 06:17 AM PDT

If you're looking to buy an Apple case for your phone, make sure to do it right after you pre-order your phone. The popular colors of the cases sell out quickly.

Also, don't order the case with your phone pre-order as this will take extra time. Order the phone, and then order your case right after in a separate order. Good luck everyone!

In regards to iOS Permissions (Camera and others), and privacy in general from an iOS Dev

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 09:13 PM PDT

Hey guys, I am an iOS dev for a pretty large (post IPO) company. I've been developing for less than 2 years so I'm pretty much a Noob but there are a lot of things about permissions that the Camera thing brought forward. Also, if there are any more experienced developers, or anyone who knows about this subject, please feel free to chime in, by no means am I an expert on any of this.

Also, I'm on a plane, and haven't really slept much so if this post sucks, I won't be surprised.

    1. If you grant permissions for Camera, then yes, an app can take pictures using either camera without you knowing. Odds are, most big companies won't be sneakily taking pictures of you (twitter, fb, instagram, Microsoft/Google apps etc). I don't THINK apps can take pictures in the background, but I'm not completely sure about this.
    2. Any time you grant an app a permission, they can abuse it. You give an app access to contacts, odds are the app is uploading your contacts and all the info to their own servers
    3. Apps that ask for Photos permission, can ask for read and write, and if they can read your photos, the apps can also upload them to their own servers without you knowing.
    4. Apps that ask for location/microphone can run in the background, although iOS is pretty aggressive about letting you know. Keep in mind, even if it's letting you know the app is using your location, the app can still send the data back to their own servers.
    5. A big one: Users often name their iPhones as 'Robs iPhone', or 'First name's iPhone'...well all of this information, a developer can take, AND MORE without asking for permission. You guys have no idea how common this is, and not only is it just the iPhone name, but a lot of other information, such as device orientation, iOS version, model, battery information...etc (see here for more: UIDevice Docs)
    6. Apps can and do things like, how long are you looking at a screen. So for instance, say you're using the reddit app, odds are they know exactly how long each item is on screen for, and the position (whether its front and center, or towards the edges...etc) . How many times you open an app, what times, literally anything you can think of in this area.

Hopefully this gives you a small idea on how companies can take a lot of data from your devices. The reason I mentioned that the company I work for is post IPO is because we do a lot of these kind of things, and its generally the bigger companies than focus on collecting data, whereas start ups need to focus on getting bigger by making a better product. Data isn't useful for a company if they don't have hundreds of thousands of users. Selling data for even 10s of thousands of users isn't really worth it (not a lot of money in this) and so smaller apps usually focus on features first, and then data.

This is just something I've seen in TWO years of experience in the industry. TWO years is nothing, so take this with a grain of salt.

*Disclaimer: When I say odds are, I'm really just guessing, I don't know the actual odds

** Also, again, just wanted to say I'm pretty noobish as a dev, so if something doesn't seem right, it never hurts to get a second opinion. I am more than capable of being wrong.

*** Also, I didn't Google right before this post, this is really just me thinking about the permissions asked for, and what I COULD do with the permissions granted. If you have questions about other permissions, or anything else I'll do my best to answer.

Lastly, keep in mind, these things individually might not be much, but if an app tracks locations, has all your device info + device name, your contacts, access to pictures....etc. Any combination of these can be used to identify users, and link them to their device so next time you hit a webpage, they know who you are.

Title explains what happened. All the buttons are sticky as shit and the top speakers are nearly muffled. Not sure what to do besides shrug and "lessons learned". That said, I'm currently drinking and bought the same ice cream cone as last night because I was disappointed I didn't get to eat it. Don't be me

    Toxicity in this sub

    Posted: 26 Oct 2017 11:08 AM PDT

What's up with this as of late? I get disagreement over the notch or Face ID or whatever... but these people calling other people who like the Face ID Fanboys for simply liking it or thinking its going to be awesome is getting really annoying.

Same of the other side, but i've see way more name calling and ending arguments by calling people "fanboys" just for liking something or giving a counter point.

This sub has been really toxic lately and I hope it stops soon. Calling people "retarded" or "pathetic fanboys" really needs to stop.

    Any one notice this too?
