Upgrading to iOS 11 has made my phone barely usable at times Posted: 02 Oct 2017 02:05 AM PDT The versions of iOS have always been fine for me in the past, just with minor bugs. iOS 11 is by FAR the worst upgrade for me, here's my experiences:
I really hope apple will fix these bugs asap. I've experienced many others but these are just the ones most annoying. Edit: I have an iPhone 6. However, many people have also commented saying they're getting the same issues on a 6S or a 7. [link] [comments] |

Going nude while waiting for the X, it's been glorious. Posted: 02 Oct 2017 12:49 PM PDT So I decided to live my life like an Apple executive. I've been running my near-perfect 6S+ caseless, without a screen protector or any of that stuff. Two weeks have gone by and I really enjoy it. It looks good, and people actually take time to point it out to eachother, probably whispering that I'm brave or stupid. It's really made me appreciate the phone design again, and their drive for thinness. I'm looking forward to my X, and wondering if I can/should keep up the brave ideas with it. TLDR I enjoy my recently NSFL all-nude phone. [link] [comments] |

Fast Charging iPhone 8: 29W, 12W, 7.5W Wireless, 5W, USB-C to iMac and USB-A to iMac Posted: 03 Oct 2017 01:43 AM PDT Video: https://youtu.be/aawlU1IzuqI Click here for the iPhone Plus Charging Speed chart from the video. With a 15 minute charge difference between 12W and 29W chargers with the iPhone 8 Plus I'd only upgrade when I have an iPad Pro. iPad Pros benefit more from the fast charging than iPhones. What I get from this test:
I've been using 3rd party 12W car and wall chargers with my 2015 iPhone 6s and 2013 iPad Air and they are worlds apart faster than the bundled 5W charger. [link] [comments] |

My experience from Samsung to full IOS Posted: 02 Oct 2017 12:04 PM PDT A few days ago I owned a Samsung galaxy s6. Today I'm the owner of a iPhone 8 plus and Apple Watch series 3. Right off the bat, customer service. Apple store was a great experience from my usual AT&T horrid. The iPhone 8 plus is so fast and easy compared to my "flagship" Samsung. The Apple Watch has made life easier in so many ways. The biggest and most exciting thing for me is Apple care. Iv has several things go wrong with my s6. From the battery not charging, USB port breaking, and the screen becoming unresponsive. To Samsung's credit all issues were fixed but each time I had to ship my phone out and i was without it for weeks. Now, with Apple care I can walk into the Apple store and leave with a solution and working product. I'm now a believer in Apple and a customer for life. [link] [comments] |

High Sierra install failed miserably, finally fixed it, hopefully this tip helps someone Posted: 02 Oct 2017 10:12 PM PDT Running Sierra (public release), the High Sierra (public release) installation failed with the error: "The path /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again." WTF, Apple. Useless. Rebooted. The High Sierra installation seemed to restart, and failed some time later in the same way. Tried multiple times, same result. WTF, Apple. Useless. Rebooted into recovery mode with Command-R. Disk Utility showed a loading spinner and no information. Waited forever. No change. WTF, Apple. Useless. Picked the Sierra installation option. No disk, not even Macintosh HD, was listed as an option to install to. Just...empty space. Tried multiple times, same result. WTF, Apple. Useless. Picked the Time Machine restoration option. Selected a backup on an external drive. Clicked the Unlock/Decrypt/whatever button and entered the password to decrypt the drive, the prompt disappeared, but the wizard didn't advance or change in any way. Tried multiple times, same result. WTF, Apple. Useless. There was a whole other level of stuff going wrong, where things that went wrong one time would work another time, but then something else wouldn't work, but I can't recall all the details. In short: WTF, Apple. Useless. Found a tip about finding the missing OSInstall.mpkg file mentioned in the error in the mounted installation disk and copying it to the right place. Searched for the file and it wasn't there. WTF, Apple. Useless. Rebooted into network recovery mode with Option-Command-R. Took forever to load. Same problems as before. WTF, Apple. Useless. The ONE god damn thing that did work was Disk Utility. ALL PRAISE DISK UTILITY! It took a very long while, but eventually the loading spinner stopped and it listed the mounted installation image and the mounted external drives. Macintosh HD was listed as unmounted, with only a few tidbits of info about it. I clicked (or something, I can't remember clearly) Macintosh HD and it showed a little more info about it, but it was still unmounted. I let it sit there for a minute, and MAGICALLY it mounted right there in front of my eyes. The info literally POPPED into the UI. I guess the planets aligned. WTF, Apple. Picked the High Sierra installation option. Macintosh HD was listed. The installation completed successfully. I'm SHOCKED at how unstable the recovery tools were. In the past they've been solid. This changed the whole risk calculation for me on when to upgrade Mac OS. I think I'll wait for 10.x.1 from now on. Tip for Apple: If you're making a recovery tool, maybe you should check for "impossible" situations, like no hard disks to install to in a laptop you made, and admit to the user that something is wrong. WTF, Apple. Useless. TL;DR: If all else fails, Option-Command-R to install from the network, and view partitions that don't mount automatically in Disk Utility until they magically do. iPad Pro 10.5 owners, do you have a hard time going back to other iOS devices after using it? Posted: 02 Oct 2017 12:57 PM PDT I saw the screen firsthand and it looks so damn smooth and fluid. However I feel it'll make my other devices seem slow in comparison because that refresh rate, man. The contrast feels too real to get it now when it's the odd one out in regards to it, but I was wondering how did the owners of the 10.5 feel about it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2017 07:31 PM PDT My 6s+ is fine on iOS 11 in terms of apps working and is actually faster than ever, but my battery has been dropping after scrolling through twitter for 2 minutes from 85% to 65%, as well as reading through emails and browsing. Not to mention how much my phone has been heating up to the point where it's uncomfortable to hold at times now. Is anyone else experiencing this or is something just wrong with my phone? EDIT: I already updated to 11.0.1. It almost feels like my battery went to shit especially after this update. [link] [comments] |
Father passed away. What's the best way to back up his information, primarily contacts and pictures? Posted: 02 Oct 2017 06:22 PM PDT My father passed away back in June and my mother would like to start using his iPhone. He has some pictures and a ton of contacts that I'd like to back up for her. She's older so I'd like to be able to print the contacts and put the pictures on a thumb drive. What would be the easiest way to tackle this? Is there any other data I should look for to back up? From 100% battery to 0% battery... Posted: 02 Oct 2017 06:21 AM PDT In 7h and 30 minutes on my iPhone 6s. Sure it's 18 months old but that's just a shambles really. Light touch usage. Browsing web on WiFi. Made a couple of calls. Took a photo. It took 30 minutes to drop from 100% to 90%. watching those numbers drop is like watching a countdown clock. At 19% I watched a 30 second video. By the time the video was over I was at 13%. I'm travelling right now and it's frustrating because the places I'm going don't always have chargers. It's just sad that such a device can die on you so quickly after such light usage. Anyone else know my pain? [link] [comments] |
Is the Spark email app still using questionable privacy practices? Posted: 02 Oct 2017 06:14 PM PDT I used to use Spark and I loved it, but then I read a post on here about their questionable privacy practices and went back to the default mail app. I really loved the app, and I wanted to see if maybe they changed their privacy policies, so I can start using it again. Posted: 02 Oct 2017 10:49 AM PDT I've noticed that as Apple has released great new products like the Apple Watch and AirPods, we've started to see a lot of duplication in functionality. There are many features and functions now that can be carried out in multiple places. For example:
My point is that there are A LOT of different ways to accomplish the same task in Apple's ecosystem. You might argue that this gives the user choice, but I would argue that it's actually detrimental because it increases the cognitive load. The user wants to accomplish a certain task; she doesn't want to have to think about and decide between the many different ways to accomplish said task. She just wants it done. This is a difficult design problem to solve because you don't want to artificially limit the capabilities of each device, but at the same time, you don't want too much redundancy. The goal is to create an ecosystem in which every task can be accomplished simply and without thought. You want all the devices to be powerful and capable. but you also want to instill muscle memory into the user so that he automatically knows which device and method to use for what, without having to make a conscious choice. After all, too much choice can actually slow down your task. Choice paralysis is a real thing. So what's the solution? I believe that in order to solve this, we'll need a massive paradigm shift in computing. We'll need to see a shift away from the current app-based paradigm to a more function-based paradigm. Instead of thinking "use this app to do X" or "use this device to accomplish Y", you have to essentially reverse that and put the task ahead of the entry point. "I want to do X". I think we've seen hints of that in certain places. For example, look at the Maps app that was redesigned in iOS 10. Previously, the app was a collection of features. It had different options for different things. If you wanted driving direction, you'd tap one thing. If you wanted to search for a place, you'd tap another thing. And so on. That's all well and good, but when you're opening a Maps app, the primary thing you have in mind is "How do I get there"? iOS 10 did that. The UI change in the Maps app from iOS 7/8/9 to iOS 10 was far more than aesthetic. It redesigned the interface to put your task in the forefront. You'd get directions, and then if you wanted to change how you get there, you can play with the features. But the point is that it puts the task in front of the options instead of the options in front of the task. Another example of this is how the Maps app now integrates Uber. If I want to Uber somewhere, instead of going to the Uber app, I once again use the Maps app and think "I want to get there", at which point the Uber option is available via the newly added extension. The Uber app is no longer the focus. The "I want to get there" is, and Uber is merely one of the means through which to get there. That's the kind of paradigm shift we need to see. The Maps app redesign was great, but we need to see a whole lot more of that design philosophy elsewhere. We need to see the focus pulled away from the apps and devices and access points, and shifted towards the task at hand. This is a monumental design challenge that will require the best design minds in software and hardware to take a step back and rethink things from the ground up, but if any company can do it, it's Apple. Now that we're seeing the voice-first world start to emerge, along with the birth of identity computing (thanks to Face ID), I think and I hope we're on the precipice of this major paradigm shift.
