Uber's latest update notes try to take credit for iOS 11 allowing users more control of their location privacy

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 11:20 AM PDT

Here are their latest update notes.

The implication seems to be that they are adding the option for users to only share their location when the app is open, but that is a well known iOS 11 feature required for all apps.

In fact, it's likely that this feature was added to iOS because of the abuse of location data by companies like Uber itself.

Five years of iPad iOS updates and still no built-in calculator app

Congratulations to Apple. They worked pretty hard for this achievement.

    Edit: 8 years. Sorry!

I don't know who to tell this to, or how but I have to share something.

I am from Portland, Or, and was visiting my family in Indiana for my first vacation in a while. Most of my family would be meeting my wife and 1 year old for the first time, including my aging grandparents. They met my daughter Eleanor for the first time and due to their age and health condition, likely their last. These grandparents played my parents from ages 4 months to 4 years while my mother was in the army, and my dad not so much in the picture. These grandparents are my dads parents btw, funnily enough. Anyhow, I only had 4 days pto for this 'vacation' (it was short and I would call it relaxing) so fitting in all the visitation I can was hard. I had one day to see them. It was a great visit, my grandpa was full of joy despite not being able to hear much or remember a lot. I took many pictures of them holding their great grand daughter and will cherish that they have not passed away before now.

The next day, at the airport departures drop off lane at the IND airport, my iPhone fell from my pocket and I didn't notice. I couldn't find it in my pocket and assumed I left it at my moms, until about 10 minutes later wife got a call from my phone and it was someone who found my phone. It had been crushed. By a car. I mean it was bad. Functioned enough for another person to tell Siri to call my emergency contact. The phone was getting really hot though and I turned it off. It would be the last power down it had in it.

I take for granted the fact that my phone backs up over wifi. I never check to be sure it's turned on.

My replacement phone arrived and it restored from I-cloud. All my pictures of what could very likely be the last time I see my grandparents again we're waiting for me. This all may seem so dumb to some of you but I cried. A 32 year old man who doesn't even care about pictures generally was crying at the loss of some pictures on a phone. Then I cried because I didn't lose them.

If you don't have that turned on, turn it on at LEAST on vacation.

Also I needed to say that this is why I have an iPhone. The fuckers guts were hanging out, and it managed to stay alive long enough to allow a stranger to use it to tell my emergency contact the phone had been found. I will only ever own an iPhone.worth all he gold in the world.

After I fired up MeasureKit AR program, I noticed the phone getting real warm, which exactly what I want on a cold day. Portable hand warmer.

    iOS 11 gave me back 8GB on a 16GB iPhone 6s

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 09:54 AM PDT

Anyone else noticed getting a lot of memory freed up after the update? I had to delete a number of apps to get to the ~2GB free required to do the update. After the update, my 6S showed over 10GB available.

My bro-in-law (hey Peter!) got back around 5GB after the update on his iPhone 7.

    Apparently YMMV.

10 years, 11 revisions later and is still happening

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 03:09 AM PDT

    volume in my way!

It does feel like it vanishes quicker but I still can't believe it hasn't shrunk.

We gotta assume it's came up in meetings/reviews by now so they must have a reason for wanting to keep it ... you'd think?

A quick warning: in iOS11 disabling Bluetooth via the control center toggle doesn’t actually turn it off

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 05:28 AM PDT

In this new update tapping the Bluetooth toggle in control center doesn't fully disable it, it only stops the phone from connecting to other devices.

In fact, if you go to the Bluetooth settings, you will see that it is still enabled even after "disabling" it from the cc.

Wallet is really ugly in iOS11.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 01:26 PM PDT

Here's what it looks like: https://i.imgur.com/6S9CKAs.jpg

It looks like something I'd see on a Samsung phone. Just because Apple is trying to shift their design language to be whiter, bolder, and flatter doesn't mean they should needlessly change color schemes in every app regardless of how it ends up looking.

I think this new wallet is just plain ugly, which is a shame- I really loved how the old app looked, and enjoyed keeping all my digital tickets organized in a visually pleasing visual space. This simple color change cheapens everything.

What’s with all the big BOLD titles?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 02:05 PM PDT

I don't need telling I'm in settings or I'm in all inboxes in huge letters, I know where I am FFS.

    It's a hideous design.

TIL you can now swipe down in the App Store in iOS 11 to refresh the page. Tapping the icons 10 times no longer works.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 01:15 PM PDT

Wasn't receiving app updates on my iPhone until I happened to swipe and pull down the screen. It refreshed and boom, lots of updates.

I have had more apps glitch/freeze in the past 2 days on iOS 11 than in the past 2 years on iOS 9/10

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 07:20 PM PDT

Glitches with the keyboard being stuck overlayed over the app...

Apps freezing when selecting from the exposé after some time of inactivity...

Apps opening to a black screen and freezing from the unlock screen...

Having to ask Snapchat friends to resend their pictures/conversations because of aforementioned glitches...

Like, still not nearly bad enough for me to consider an Android but damn Apple what's happened??

I just got a new iPhone 7 and..

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 11:40 PM PDT

I'm honestly in love with it. It fits my hand perfectly, the matte black looks amazing and the screen feels much larger than my old 5s. I'm trying to read stuff on Reddit but I keep having to stop to look at the phone itself lmao. This is probably a dumb post but I figured I'd find at least a few people who love it too!

[Update] Hi, I made an app which lets you pick colors (and shows closest Pantone colors) through your iPhone's camera in real time.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2017 10:22 AM PDT

    Previous post

A couple of months back, I posted about my app Cone here and received an overwhelming response. I've come a long way since then, thanks to your support and warm emails. Here's the progress I made since I first released the app.

I would like to share 35 promo codes to thank you for all your support and feedback. If you think the app is going to help you in any way, then please spread the word!

    Thank you!
