Why does it take so long to create a macOS USB installer?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 02:58 PM PDT

I have been a Mac user for nearly 20 years, and I have never been able to understand why the write speed to the flash drive device is so slow during the creation of a macOS installer.

Even over USB 3, I never saw a write speed over 7MB/sec.

Is this a specific function of createinstallmedia?

I want to switch over to Mac OS from Windows. Anybody here have experience/advice?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2022 10:55 PM PDT

I have been windows based since 1999. I want to try switching to MAC and using it as my main OS for a while on a new MBP 2021. Does anybody have any advice or pitfalls or big differences I should be noting on how the systems work? Has anybody here switched from windows going into mac and learning it all over?

I mainly want to use it as a creative machine.
I'll use Cubase Pro (Music Production) and try out Logic Pro X.
Adobe Premiere (Video Editing) and try out Final Cut Pro X.
After Effects (motion GFX) and try out Apple Motion.
    Photoshop.

I'm looking forward to trying FCPX and Logic Pro. But it's nice to know the programs I'm use to are on MAC also.

The biggest difference I feel is finding my way around the system, and shortcut keys, and such. I have no idea what I'm in for yet...

Mac program that does timed recordings?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 03:50 PM PDT

Can you recommend a Mac program that does timed recordings? I'd like to plug a radio into the computer's input jack and then set the software to start recording and stop recording at a certain time, like a VCR for radio.

I have an old iMac and I'd like to be able to record my daily radio show off the air. Thank you!

Looking for circular scroll feature on Macbook

Looking for circular scroll feature on Macbook

What I really miss is the circular scroll (or chiral scroll) feature, which used to be available on old Windows laptops.

In short, it allows the user to start a gesture from any edge of the trackpad, and then move finger in a circular way across all the trackpad to scroll the page – as shown on this gif:

    https://i.redd.it/vefxr00piwt81.gif

And also a few YouTube videos:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbmOnmm0AMc
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Hv1cC7pPE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUFxeZz7qvw

This method has one huge advantage over standard two-finger scrolling: you're not limited by physical size of the trackpad, and you can scroll continuously using only one finger – which is especially useful for long pages and documents.

As for now, I only found MiMoSim utility for MacOS which seems to implement something similar, but it's not working on my machine (MacOS 12.3.1, M1 chip), and the project seems to be abandoned.

Rogue Amoeba's ACE and Kexts vs Dexts

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 02:42 PM PDT

    Hello,

So when you install some apps from Rogue Amoeba, their audio engine (ACE) requires you to open the SIP gates in order to install their kext, which is used by many other apps like Discord (e.g to enable audio share on M1 you need to do let the ACE kext through).

My question would be, do you guys know if there is a compelling (technical) reason why they haven't migrated to dext (the simplest one could be their engineering team is like 4 people, but that's not a technical reason)?
I'm worried if in 2 or 3 iterations of MacOS, kexts are deprecated forever then great apps like Audio Hijack would stop working. Not to mention many users simply don't want to enable third party kexts via recovery mode.

    Thanks for your time.

Deleting iMessages/texts in Messages sucks. Why?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 04:05 PM PDT

Maybe I've been under a rock, but I can't find anything useful on how to more efficiently delete messages. "Select; right-click; confirm" is crap. Why no Cmd+Delete?

Any way to have different scrolling for mouse AND trackpad?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 06:57 AM PDT

Just got a new mouse for my macbook air and it seems like the trackpad and mouse scrolling directions are shared. I untick the box in the mouse settings for natural scrolling it unticks it in the trackpad settings as well. Is there any way to change them to be independent or am I stuck going into the menus every time I switch back and forth between mouse and no mouse?

Menu Bar monitoring app: iStat Menus vs Stats?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 01:52 PM PDT

I have been using iStat Menus for many years, today I discovered Stats , it looks great, any feedback on pros/cons among them?

I might switch to Stats, specially because it is open source and it seems an active community backing the development.

    MacBook Pro screen partially black

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 09:35 AM PDT

    MacBook Pro screen partially black

My new MacBook Pro's (bought just Dec 2020) screen started flickering and within minutes the right side and top of the screen got some lines then they started go black.

At this time, the part of the screen that hasn't gone dark is flickering including the icons at the bottom of the screen.

Can this be fixed? If so, what would you suggest?

Do I need to back up what's on the laptop and not saved to the cloud? How?

    Thank you

When I open FaceTime on my MacBook Air , I don’t see any contacts. Just a bunch of phone numbers with no names. When I click on “new FaceTime” button and try to type of my friends’ names , nothing comes up. When my friends FaceTime me, I receive it in my iPhone , but no notification in my MacBook.

    iMac 24” M1 - Dual External Monitors

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 12:37 PM PDT

It's my understanding that my current model of iMac M1 only supports one external monitor. I've seen mixed information that a DisplayPort Dock Station with dual display capabilities may be able to allow my Mac to run dual external monitors. Anyone have any experience with this working or not?

Advice for Upgrading a 2017 MacBook Pro in 2022

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 07:57 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I own a mid 2017 MacBook Pro running High Sierra which I hate to admit hasn't been updated beyond the High Sierra security updates that ended in 2020. I bought this computer when I was in high school so I didn't think much about upgrading as I really only use it for some schoolwork, and it has always performed as needed. In fact, it's still performing well to this day but I'm wondering if I should still look into upgrading as my summer break starts soon and I will have a few months of not needing to use it on a daily basis. I realize that this laptop is getting old, but I have a year left of college so I want to maximize its performance until at least this time next year. I have very limited knowledge on computers which is why I'm looking for advice on whether or not to upgrade to Monterey, or possibly an earlier OS. Any advice on this is much appreciated!

Update to Monterrey create additional volume HD data - data.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 11:23 AM PDT

Update to Monterrey create additional volume HD data - data.

So to clarify I understand that when you you upgrade to Monterrey the OS creates a volume for both the snapshot startup and then one for the data volume. However when I did mine about a month ago it also created a third volume called Macintosh HD data - data which seems to have been my pre update files. They both reside on Container disk1.

The old volume is named disk1s1 while the new volumes are disk1s5s1(startup snapshot) and disk1s6(data volume)

For a while I did not mind and mainly just went about my business since I still had a fair bit of available storage. However I have got to the point where I need more storage.

I renamed them for the time being just for reference

My question is the old data volume still has a system, library, user folder. I have essentially removed everything from the user folder just was wondering if it is safe to just delete the system and library folders on that side since those are from the Big Sur days or to just erase that volume completely?

I just still have a lot to learn when it comes to disk utility clearly so did not want to do something silly like I am prone to doing.

What would yall do or recommend?

    Cheers

TextMate - a graphical text editor for macOS 10.12 or later

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 10:31 AM PDT

Just moved from 10.9 Maverick to 10.11 El Capitan...its ok but I have some issues I hope you can resolve

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 01:17 PM PDT

So aside from having to trick the apple server by changing the terminal date to a time it was still available (I'm sure they'll fix that loophole soon) and then use terminal to remove csstore files in order to login, its pretty smooth. I thought it'd be slower because its a higher OS and would take more power on my late 2013 27inch imac, but some things actually seem faster. And then I looked for updates in the app store, installed the latest security update (for el capitan at least...) and it broke half of my music-making plugins, but that's been solved.

Anyway the 2 biggest issues I've noticed so far are

    • Everything looks smaller, it hurts a little to read them clearly, I think the font changed and its as if the screen changed resolution slightly but I can't get it back to the size it was, the only built-in option for resolution I see makes it too big. And...kinda blurry? Like it moves a little like you're buzzed. Maybe the refresh rate changed. I believe this is to sell you a retina display, prove me wrong.

    • Completely ruined my Reminders, now when they pop up they only have the option "complete" and "later". Maverick had "close" and "snooze" I procrastinate a lot, and now to get the alerts off the screen I have to click later > ignore (2 clicks to do what snooze did, that adds up), because 'complete' makes them disappear from the reminder list to the completed section, thats not what I want I just want to put them off but have it pop up later. I could go through and make them all repeat every day but I don't see a way to mass-do that.... Among other options I have snooze for 5 mins, an hour, and tomorrow....in the other one I could hold down snooze and get 5 mins, 15 mins, 30, 45, tomorrow, a week, etc. Was good for laundry and cooking. Is there a way to bring those back? A switch in terminal to activate to get to 'advanced' mode or something?

Or is there a better (free) reminders app I should be using?

Yay now I can use the internet again! I would've stayed on mavericks forever if forced obsolescence wasn't a thing.

    Airport utility crashes On Monterey

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 04:24 AM PDT

I just made a clean install of macOS Monterey. However since this new installation the Airport utility application doesn't work. I can open it but when I click on edit on my Airport Extreme the application crashes and closes itself.

I look on the web for the lastest version compatible with Monterey but the one that comes with Monterey isn't available for download.

Today the only way I can access my Airport Extreme is through Airport utility on my iPad. However the options are limited and I need to access other menus than the ones we can find on iOS Airport utility version.

Any suggestion to help me to solve this issue? Thanks.
