Initial TM backup taking longer than I expected. (Monterey, APFS, HDD) Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:40 AM PDT EDIT: Answered my own question: Monterey initialized the extended disk to APFS, but NOT Case-sensitive, encrypted, so the TM backup was encrypted but not the disk. I reformatted to APFS CS-E and TM started without doing anything to the volume. It appears to be backing up much faster. Original post: I recently upgraded my TM drive to a huge, 16TB mechanical drive (Seagate Exos X). I initialized it as extended, but didn't realize Monterey no longer has encryption on extended. When I selected exception for the backup, the drive was reformatted as APFS. The initial backup (approx 6TB) looks like it will take 24h. On my previous initial run a few weeks ago, the backup seemed to take half that amount of time. I know initial backups are slow, and encryption slows that down event further, but what I'm wondering is if I made a mistake my not selecting APFS encryption on initialization. In short, have I made things slower by selecting Extended then encryption from the TM backup? I know the common wisdom is to encrypt the drive from the start rather than from the TM screen. I don't mind just starting over if it will be quicker in the long run to just start there. Is this still the best move? Initialize as APFS-encrypted, then start the TM? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Mar 2022 02:33 AM PDT Edit: SOLVED! ——— My system is mildly sluggish, but whenever I open Activity Monitor to check what process is slowing things down the system suddenly becomes fast again. As long as I leave AM open things are fine… until I close AM… Has anyone come across this before? Is this a process trying to hide its activity? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Mar 2022 02:29 AM PDT Hey, all minds. I've recently updated my 2021 Mac Air to MacOS Monterey after a lot of hesitation. All is good so far with the system and everything else. But... I use Any Do for all my lists. iPhone is still working after the latest updates, but the iMac and Air signed out, and after a little research it said sign out on all devices and try again. Did that! iPhone 13PM and IMac 2014 Catalina sign back in no probs, but Mac Air, after following the 'close your browser to continue' prompt takes me back to the sign-in page and I keep looping but to no avail. Any help with this one, please? Cheers! [link] [comments]
Unable to connect to Synology NAS with SMB Posted: 23 Mar 2022 05:47 AM PDT Hi all! I have a new Mac Mini M1 and cannot seem to connect to my NAS using SMB. I can see the NAS in finder and am using AFP as a workaround right now but would like to move to SMB since AFP is archaic technology and deprecated. I always get the following message: There was a problem connecting to the server "192.xxx.x.xxx" The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again. I have tried to connect to the hostname and IP address in finder as follows:
In my NAS, I have set SMB versioning to SMB2 and SMB3 and Bonjour services are active - I have set the same version range in macOS. In addition, I have installed Monterey 12.3 fresh (boot into recovery > Disk Utility > Wipe Disk > Install Monterey). I am not sure what additional troubleshooting I can perform. This NAS is mounted on Windows and Linux machines without issue and in the same LAN. Thank you all for taking the time to read this post and I greatly appreciate any feedback and additional tricks/tips you provide! [link] [comments]
Terminal command "pkgutil --pkgs" showing apps I know I uninstalled. Posted: 23 Mar 2022 05:19 AM PDT When I type "pkgutil --pkgs" into the terminal, it shows all the packages installed on my Mac. It shows apps I installed. But it also shows apps I know I uninstalled. They're not located in the Applications folder. I'm also finding apps I uninstalled months ago. I think the only difference is that I installed those apps using the .pkg installer thing?; rather than the .dmg file. (Sorry, I'm kind of new to Mac). What's happening? Are those apps still installed on my computer? Or are they left over files? The app I'm trying to get rid of is a "companion app" to a Firefox add-on. By all accounts it's safe, but I don't like the idea of having it on my computer, and not knowing how to remove it. Honestly thinking about reinstalling macOS if I can't solve this. Please help :( [link] [comments]
External hard drive won’t dock with NFTS for Mac Posted: 23 Mar 2022 02:35 AM PDT I have an external hard drive that I use mainly for loading with movies from my MacBook and then plugging it into my tv to watch. Normally it connects to my MacBook with no problem, but yesterday it wouldn't mount at all, and at some point I got it to mount but it was only read-only. I made sure the NTFS software was up to date, restarted multiple times, the hard drive shows up in the NFTS app, but when I click on mount it just does nothing. Can anybody help?
