What apps do you use every day?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 03:54 PM PDT

Just wondering if there are any cool apps for every day use that I don't know about.

Edit: didn't expect so many responses. Thank you everyone :)

Any updates as to what's happening with Apple's self repair programme? We've had no mention of it since its first press release over 4 months ago.

Just here to say that my dad is loving his new iPhone SE3

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 08:04 AM PDT

Coming from a man who recently upgraded from the OG SE to the new one, he loves the faster phone with longer battery life and that's it. That's all he really cares about and he is very happy with it. He doesn't do any social media or web browsing, mostly just phone calls with his siblings and parents, some group chats with them and his family, checking the weather and takes very little photos and videos. This phone is perfect for him as it can easily last him 2 days on a full charge since he is such a light user. He's one of the few that prefers to have a home button and doesn't care about any of the flagship features that come in the higher end models. For $429 the iPhone SE3 is a great budget phone that can easily last 5+ years and for someone like my father who's a light user I highly recommend it.

    Move To iOS Expectations

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 09:00 PM PDT

For background I have convinced my spouse of three months to move from Android (Samsung S10) to the iPhone (13 Pro Max), so if a hint of desperation comes through that's where it come from.

We're trying the Move to iOS route and seeing some crazy time estimates. Settled into about 11 hrs when we had all options selected. That includes 3gb of messages and 54gb on the camera roll.

After a restart (both the phones and the migration process) due to a phone call and looking at the alternatives for the camera roll, we unchecked Camera Roll and once the time remaining stabilized it was 18 hrs.

One additional restart, this time following the extra steps of removing all network configurations and it's settled back to just over 12 hrs to complete.

Does anyone have any experience with Move To iOS as to the throughput to expect? Bonus points for any insights into how the process can be sped up, other than completing the initial setup and then manually moving content.

iPhone se 2022 vs iPhone se 2020

    Posted: 21 Mar 2022 05:06 AM PDT

So iPhone SE 2022... Is same in every aspect... Except from A15 chip... And maybe the different glass.

iPhone 11 supports deep fusion with A13 iPhone SE 2022 has same camera hardware as 2020 (same as ip8)... 2022 supports deep fusion But 2020 model does not? It has the same camera... And apple A13 supports it for sure...

    What gives?

LCD 120 Hz or OLED 60Hz

    Posted: 21 Mar 2022 04:39 AM PDT

Which of those combinations would you prefer? I have iPhone XS with OLED 60 Hz screen and iPad Pro with LCD 120 Hz screen, so I was thinking which combination do others prefer. For me it's the iPhones OLED screen. It is still very smooth and the added contrast is great.

Is it weird that I change my case depending on my location/situation?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 04:30 PM PDT

I have the leather and silicone iPhone 13 Pro Max cases. When I am at home or at the gym, I change it the silicon case, since I don't have to "baby" it as much. However, I switch the leather case when I'm headed to work or making runs. I tend to do this with my watch bands as well, switching between the sport bands and leather bands per situation.

I basically started this after realizing the leather cases don't hold up so well with everyday life situations, such as kids, and the gym. To me the silicon is a bit more durable and I don't feel like spending $60 on a new leather cases once it gets dinged up (which it will)

Pitaka case review 2022 (iPhone 13 pro & iPhone 12)

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 01:17 PM PDT

    Images of both cases: https://imgur.com/a/LrPuSVe

    Cases:

    MagEZ Case(Black/Blue Twill) - IPhone 12 Blue

Fusion weaving MagEZ Case 2 (Concerto) - IPhone 13 Pro Pacific Blue

    Review:

    • Pretty grippy, similar feel as the apple silicone case (silicone is little bit more grippy)
    • Woven fiber texture feels really nice and of good quality
    • Front case lip provides protection when phone is laying down. Note: You can easily move the lip with your hand meaning a fall on one of those lips would push it back to the point where the screen would get hit and break, so not much protection there.
    • Case is really thin, almost feels like a skin on the iPhone
    • Blue twill is more like a turquoise/cyan.
    • Concerto for IPhone 13 Pro has a black/grey primary with a strip of all Pitaka color ways (blue, green-yellow, brown, red, dark red)
    • Finger print resistance matte finish (moisturizer will make this look a little dirty)
    • Camera lip to protect the lenses (Broke off on iPhone 12 Mag EZ case, see images. However, it does look like the MagEZ case 2 is less prone to this)
    • Top and bottom do not fully encase and surround the phone. You do get openings (I preferred this so I could show off the color of my phone)
    • MagEZ (iPhone12) survived multiple drops with very little damage to the case and phone. MagEZ 2 (iPhone 13 Pro) had more dents in the case after a couple of drops and shattered my screen once (phone fell flat on its face and lip pushed back, exposing the screen to textured concrete)

    Overall:

8/10. I knew the risk of buying a minimalistic case and have Apple care (have used it once on iPhone 13 Pro) to mitigate this. One thing Pitaka should do is try wrapping the front lip a little more so it doesn't get pushed back as easily. The grip is amazing for me and the stealthy look of carbon fiber adds to the premium matte finish. I've received many compliments on my case, which I haven't with others, so that shows you that people appreciate and notice the quality. This case does not look cheap and that's reassuring since the price is pretty steep at $70. Note that you can frequently find $5 off coupons which help decrease that a tiny bit.

Last note: MagEZ 2 feels much sturdier than the first MagEZ case and it seems like they've reinforced the camera bump.

    Iphone 13 mini to keep

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 05:04 AM PDT

Alright so since we are still far away from iphone 14 releasing,I been wondering since the rumours about base iphone 14 keeping the same a15 bionic, wouldn't that mean they would stop selling the base iphone 13 since that would interfere with their sale?

And if the rumours about no 14 mini are true than why not just stop selling the iphone 13 but keep the 13 mini for the mini option, this way people still have a choice to go for the mini iphone

I would like to hear your thoughts about my prediction

    Teardown Mystery

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 11:44 AM PDT

    Teardown Mystery

TL;DR **What is the part boxed in red (see first screenshot "iPhone 13 Pro")? I don't see this part in any of the iPhone 13 Pro Max or iPhone 13 teardowns. See other screenshots ... why are some of the IC's missing in some of the teardowns (See red and purple boxes)?**

I just got an iPhone 13 Pro. My previous phone was an iPhone 12 Pro Max. When I get a new phone, I like to view teardowns and compare them with other generations. When I was comparing the iPhone 13 Pro with the iPhone 13 Pro max and the regular iPhone 13, there was something that stood out. See screenshot below:

    iPhone 13 Pro

Source for the iPhone 13 Pro screenshot (above): LuwHpZSaBoRGxBNY.huge (1600×1200) (ifixit.com)

What is the part that I boxed in red? I couldn't find any information on it, and no other teardowns labeled it. In addition to that, I found another interesting difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro max teardowns. See screenshots below:

    iPhone 13 Pro Max

iPhone 13 (Similar to iPhone 13 Pro max ... but missing some components)

Source for the iPhone 13 screenshot (above): Teardown of iPhone 13:Nikkei

The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro Max parts look very similar, but two chips/IC's are obviously missing in Nikkei's teardown. I spotted another missing component when comparing ifixit's teardown of the iPhone 13 Pro with a teardown from Tech Insights ( Apple iPhone 13 Pro Teardown | TechInsights ). See for yourself... Compare the screenshot below with the "iPhone 13 Pro" screenshot at the beginning of my post (see purple boxes):

Want to upgrade to a Pro Max this year but it should retain the same price as last year and include a stylus

Basically a Samsung S22 Ultra alternative. It's the only thing that makes me want to switch to android. I know a lot of you won't share the same opinion but I'd like to see who else agrees!

    Future Fitness App Review

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 02:16 PM PDT

Before signing up for Future Fitness, I was searching Reddit to see if I could find any reviews of the program and was surprised there are zero posts about the app aside from tech reviews.

Future is a iOS based remote training platform where you are matched with a trainer one on one. I signed up and having been using the app for a month and thought I'd share my two cents so far.

The app pairs you with a trainer of your choice which is narrowed down after you answer ~10 questions on training and trainer personality/gender preferences. I was matched with a trainer and then conducted a 15-minute FaceTime for an initial interview and review of goals, equipment, preferences, etc. The app allows you to program the equipment that you have access to as well as notes for your trainer like goals, injuries, etc.

Trainers load one weeks worth of workouts on Sundays. In the past, I have mostly done linear strength programs such as starting strength, nSuns, etc. The workouts I've received in the app contain more HIIT and power based workouts than I've done in the past as well as focus on big-lifts. The workouts have been less HIIT focused than CrossFit but more so than nSuns for example. The change in focus has put me slightly out of my comfort zone but it has been a good change of pace.

The app itself is super clean and intuitive. Workouts display on your apple watch (which they provide) and iPhone. Your phone can be cast via airplay to TV and the interface there is great. From your watch you can change weights, reps, and advance or pause your workout. Heart rate is displayed on every device; The app is super easy to use. At the conclusion of the workout, your trainer gets the workout results as well as heart rate and I'm sure other data. Everyday, a summary of your apple fitness movement data is sent to your trainer. Your trainer can save verbal pointers or goals with the workout in general and specific lifts. The app audio and clues are useful and not overly intrusive.

The cost is high; I signed up with the promo code from GarageGymReviews and got three months at 50% cost. Without a promo code, the cost is $150 monthly. Promo codes are available (I believe) for one month for $19 and members can provide passes for first month free.

My compliant is that I think it could be hard to accomplish some of the workouts if you are in a public gym, particularly a planet fitness style gym. I have a well stocked garage gym and at times it even rushes me when trying to switch from one equipment to the next. It would likely be a challenge, or just piss others off, when you use two sets of dumbbells and a barbell in a superset. Additionally, while there are warmups for muscle groups in every workout, there are typically not programmed warm-up sets for big compound lifts and you frequently go into working set weights.

The value I've received from the app is accountability more than anything. On more than one occasion I've done a workout at the end of the day that I would have otherwise skipped because I knew it would show up as a skipped workout to my coach. I get anywhere from 2-5 text messages in the app from my coach daily including videos, etc. The change in programming and not having to think about programming has been great.

In summary, I have liked the time I've used Future Fitness. I will likely use the app beyond my three month promo period. If you don't need the accountability for the workouts, diet, etc., then the app likely isn't worth it.

TIL the iPhone 12 mini is still in production

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 10:47 AM PDT

Very surprised to see the 12 mini is still in production. I'm guessing now when the 14 is released the 13 mini will still be produced and 12 discontinued

Just got my green 13 mini btw - love it :)

Instead of making the iPhone SE Apple should have made iPhone 13 mini LCD edition instead of iPhone SE

    Posted: 20 Mar 2022 08:40 AM PDT

I mean it would be a great way to make a modern Apple phone that's much more affordable and offers great features.

In addition to this Apple would still be making almost the same amount of money if they sold it for $550 due to cost of OLED

If Apple did this they would have next to non competition at mid range prices.
